BAND The Brown County Band, under the direction of Mr. Frank Neal, had a very eventful and successful year. In the summer before school started it played at the State Fair and received a 2nd rating. They also won the Governor's trophy. It entertained the fans at most of the home football and basketball games. On March 29, the Band played at the District Contest in Canton and received a superior rating. This entitled it to enter the State Contest at which an excellent rating was received. On April 11a Tri-City Concert was held in the Brown County Gymnasium which included Rush-ville, Beardstown, and Brown County. The last concert of the year was a Spring Concert on May 11. They had counted on the Junior play to bring in the necessary money, but because of the illness of Mrs. Nations, the director, the play couldn't be held. By taking advantage of the county's teachers, who happened to be in town for institute, and by scouting around for dirty cars, the Juniors had a very successful Saturday. The Hornets got started off on the right foot by defeating Winchester 20-19 in a thriller. It was an important victory for the Hornets since Winchester had been undefeated the previous season and was once again favored to capture the Illinois Valley Conference. The boys went on to win four other games. One heartbreaking loss was suffered at the hands of Havana in the Homecoming contest played before a large crowd. Havana hadn't been scored upon going in to the Brown County game and had one of their best teams in years. The Ducks won but it was a hard fought contest and Brown County played its best game of the year. CROSS-COUNTRY The Cross-Country team is one of the lesser known Hornet squads. Cross-Country is an excellent sport for those boys who aren't out for football and who wish to be on the basketball team. We should give more support to this sport, not only for the sake of cross-country, but also for basketball. 40 ROW ONE: Coach Merris, Charlie Howard, Mark Vandeventer, John Beasley, Tom Mitchell, Lincoln McGurk, Dave Moore, Coach Hafner.
