Bushing, Ph.D. Bachelor of Arts, Howard Payne College Master of Arts, East Texas State College Doctorate of Philosophy, University of Texas ...ss Dr. Rushing hails from Brown County, Texas. His last administrative position before coming to Fort Lauderdale was vice president of Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas. Dr. Rushing, his wife and their three children came to Broward County in April, 1960, when he was chosen from sixty-five applicants to be the founding president of the junior College of Broward County. The foundation of this college was completed in August of 1960 by Dr. Bushing, Dr. E. P. Lauderdale, Dean of Instruction, and Mr. Charles H. Bliley, Dean of Student Personnel and Services. In September of the same year, this college was in full operation. XYith much respect and affection, the first students of this junior college have given Dr. Rushing a special title, Great YVhite Father of jCBC, and he is admired by all students for his two-hour-long-five-minute speeches. Under the guidance of Dr. Rushing the junior College of Broward County is becoming one of the finest educational insti- tutions in Florida. The first of the permanent buildings for this college will open in September of 1963. Dr. Rushing, the administrative staff and the faculty have given greatly of their effort and time in the planning of the new campus. STAFF ASSISTANTS Hal Kushner jeff Talbert Connie' Crawford Mike Parker Bob McCulloch Q 4' 'ls- ng.: The yearbook staff, pictured on these pages, can only hope that this book will give half the pleasure to the student body that it gave the staff in compiling and editing it. As some of these pictures show, putting a yearbook together need not be entirely tedious work in a copyroom. A large part of our time was spent taking pictures that we felt would reflect the spirit of the college. XVhether or not we in any way succeeded must be left for our readers to decide, but we had a lot of fun trying. Of course, it was not all fun. There was work and plenty of it. There were deadlines and layout prob- lems and lost pictures and pictures without names and innumerable other problems, but the staff faced them all with comradrie that gave even the worst of it a kind of pleasure. Although they are not pictured, the staff would like to express its appreciation to Miss Mavme Hamlett for the two in memoriam poems which appear on page 79g and to Mr. Don Hambrick, the publishers representative, who helped on several occasions with layout problems. 4-' . - ,,, QT' -L' VN!! -.eb f . Inter-Varsity is an interdenominational student organization with national and international affiliations, which seeks to investigate the claims of jesus Christ and to consider His challenge to todays college and university students. The meetings of this chapter are open to interested students and faculty memhers. To carry out its purpose, IYCF uses stimulating films, speakers, and forums. In addition to its hi-weekly meetings and Mondays Morning Meditations there are small, informal Bible study groups, intercollegiate conferences and summer camps, socials. hull-sessions, and IYCF-sponsored activities on the beach during Easter vacation. During the year Inter-Varsity has worked with the Inter-Faith Council in planning the campus-wide Religious Emphasis Week and has donated to the lihrary several Inter-Varsity Press publications, including a subscription to 1YCF's student magazine, IIIS. luooi lfuxtcr, TI11' Hcz lcli 8' A f JG f 7? . For many students this variety only leads to hewildermentg some choose and yet are uncertain whether they made the right choiceg some seem unable or un- willing to chooseg others seem to choose again and again, never finding the right OHC. Still oth fr ques- tions arise: do I have to choose? does it matter which one I choose? can I really follow the ideal I set for myself? Many simply conclude there is nothing worth committing ones self to. In the midst of this dark- ness and uncertainty, the words of jesus Christ are as a light. He said, I am the way. the truth, the life. He does not offer men a way. nor does He ask them to join in the quest for the good life, nor in the search for truth. He claims to Be the way, the truth, the life and invites men to commit themselves to Him. and dis- cover this. In Inter-Varsity we con- sider what it means to be committed to jesus Christ on the campus. How does it affect our social life. our intellectual life. our values. our attitudes? Further we seek to find out what are the resources availahle for us if we are to live com- mitted to jesus Christ. Although he knew he was to enter eternal life with God, his only desire was to make others enjoy and appreciate life. Ile also had the will to go on learning and to inspire others to continue their studies. George did not finish his years at I.G.B.G., hut he had the true spirit of our school by participating in many activities and sports. George's high moral standards, plus his faith and interest in others, set him apart from his classmates as being one of the most respected and well liked hoys on our campus. Making people happy and ahle to enjoy life is a gift from God, and George used this gift with utmost sincerity. N 1 N441 As I take another copy sheet from the decreasing pile and notice that the numbers on the pages are approaching the end of our book. I realize that my job is almost done. It is a task I do not like to see completed because it has been a pleasurable one, as well as one of responsibility. For this is not my book: rather. it belongs to the students of this junior college. It should mirror them in their school actixities, their spirit and their ideals. It is my hope that this 1963 edition will be only one in a long line of good student publications produced on this campus. I believe that a good annual put together by a large staff representing the student body can help build a strong campus spirit and create a loyalty toward their alma mater. We are a college still in our infancy. but growing by great strides. Next year we shall take a giant step by mowing to our new facilities. As we expand in number of students and buildings, we must also ex- pand in spirit and ideals and cement ourselves to- gether into a student body that is an integral part of the college. We must want to take an active part in our college activities. our organizations and our stu- dent governrnent to make this junior college the best of all the new junior colleges in Florida. As I look around our shabby office with its institu- tional-green walls. its many windows. and its motley assortment of chairs. I remember only the fun-times with both typewriters rolling out copy and minds crackling with ideas and busy layout hands scramb- ling for pictures and ruler. It is perhaps regrettable that the working part of our staff consists of sopho- mores. because when we have gone someone else will sit in these same chairs scratching their heads over what to do when they are handed a strip of 1200 grinning faces with no names. This last paragraph will just be a simple expression of thanks, but behind it will be what is felt after a task is accomplished. My thanks to the staff for all their time and effort dining and after school and on Saturdays. Our especial thanks to Mr. Crews who has worked steadily at our side as our adxisor.
