eration, Dr. Joe Rushing of Howard Payne College, Texas, was chosen as the first president of the college. Having arrived at the college, on April 8, 1960, Dr. Rushing proceeded to form a faculty, and with the aid and assistance of Dr. E. B. Lauderdale, Dean of Instruc- tion, and Charles H. Miley, Dean of Student Personnel Services, the selection of the teaching staff was completed. On August 22, 1960, the thirty-four member faculty met for the first time and planned the curriculum. The concept of a iunior college for Broward County began as part of an over-all program instituted by the state legislature, which planned for the establishment of iunior colleges throughout Florida. It was necessary for the Broward County Board of Public Instruction to submit a request for a iunior college to the legislature. When brought before the legisla- ture in 1957, Broward lost priority to other counties which had filed earlier. In 1959, Broward resubmitted its request for the iunior college. This time, having the priority, Broward's request was voted on and passed. The local school board appointed a five-member advisory committee of leading citizens in Broward County to select a campus and appoint a president. As the former Naval Air Station was the only site available for immediate occupancy, it became the temporary campus.
