IL VER 961 Junior College of Broward County Ft. Lauderdale Florida Volume I Willard Kernpton, - Adviser Ronald Savin, - Editor Barbara Lee Tlzomas - Cu-Editor I A regiment of sunbaked wooden bar- racks faced the newly-enrolled students as they entered the campus for the first time. Their earlier dreams of ivy-covered halls were replaced by the reality of weathered buildings of the former Naval Air Station. However, at our orientation convocation program, Doctor Rushing, our founding president, bolstered our deflated aspir- ations with the thought that the spirit of college life is captured, not by stately buildings and spacious lawns, but by a program of higher learning and fellow- ship in collegiate activities. With these ideals in mind the students of the Junior College of Broward County are building an institution characterized by its friend- liness and unity. lv 'X , , .1 . NX ,f Q-. , fp UN! ERT TSTNG ,.e,,,, The concept of a iunior college for Broward County began as part of an over-all program instituted by the state legislature, which planned for the establishment of iunior colleges throughout Florida. It was necessary for the Broward County Board of Public Instruction to submit a request for a iunior college to the legislature. When brought before the legisla- ture in 1957, Broward lost priority to other counties which had filed earlier. In 1959, Broward resubmitted its request for the iunior college. This time, having the priority, Broward's request was voted on and passed. The local school board appointed a five-member advisory committee of leading citizens in Broward County to select a campus and appoint a president. As the former Naval Air Station was the only site available for immediate occupancy, it became the temporary campus. At this same time, applications for the position of iunior college president reached the advisory committee. Out of the sixty-five applicants who were under consid- eration, Dr. Joe Rushing of Howard Payne College, Texas, was chosen as the first president of the college. Having arrived at the college, on April 8, 1960, Dr. Rushing proceeded to form a faculty, and with the aid and assistance of Dr. E. B. Lauderdale, Dean of Instruc- tion, and Charles H. Miley, Dean of Student Personnel Services, the selection of the teaching staff was completed. On August 22, 1960, the thirty-four member faculty met for the first time and planned the curriculum. On August 22, 1960, the thirty-four member faculty met for the first time and registration. In those few short months between April and August, President Rushing and his administrative staff succeeded in translating the general obiectives and aspirations of earlier planners for the college into a working reality. Broward County Board of Publlc Instruction The Broward County Board of Public Instruction has over-all responsibility for the development and guidance of public instruction in the county. It was the Broward County Board which initiated the movement for this, the Jun- ior College of Broward County, and through its persistent efforts succeeded in securing necessary approvals from the State Legislature. For the forward-looking endeavors ot the Broward County Board of Public ln- struction, the student body of the college extends its deep gratitude, i , K Left to right: John Payne, Mrs. H. It is the duty of the Committee to recom- mend to the County Board a person for the office of President of the College, and afterwards to work with the appointed president in almost all aspects of campus life. Without the aid of this important group of people, it would be impossible to lay even the foundations of such a col- lege as ours.
