Those eyes have witnessed near-perfect Foot ball and basketball seasons. A spirit of Bronco Power and Pygmy Mania seemed ingrained in an excited student body. The tremendous number of success- Ful Fund-raising events suggested that an air of self-sufficiency surrounded many of the organizations. Each class added to the year: the Freshmen-a pool of future athletes and leaders, the sophomores-many successful sales, the iuniors-official broom hockey and Pygmy Power, the seniors-new innovations For the Xmas drive and our year in sports. ln order to highlight each portion of this year, the book has been divid- ed just as the year, by seasons. This enables one to look at the year as it happened. So, read on, br this is how it was! This year Brophy celebrated its Fiftieth aniver- sary with a Golden Jubilee Mass. The occasion was honored by the presence ofthe Provincial, the Very Rev. Robert St. Clair, S.J. He was the principal speaker and gave an interesting l account of the history of Brophy. A special guest at this Mass was Rev. Joseph Howard, S.J., a teacher in both the early years of Brophy and after the school reopened . He gave much to Brophy in his long years of service, and it was fitting that he should share in the celebration. He is more aware than anyone of the struggles and accomplishments of Brophy over the last Fifty years, and we were specially honored by his participation in our celebration. Father Schallert, Father Savage, and Father Harrington. From 1952 to 1956, Brophy and Xavier shared the same school building and Faculty. These pictures from the 1954 Xavier Yearbook show that Rev. Francis Harrington, S.J., the President of Brophy from 1952 to1962, was also a Xavier teacher. The Brophy classes were held down- stairs in Regis Hall, and the Xavier classes were held upstairs. This was a good arrangement For all with the possible exception of Fr. Harrington. Due to the lack of other quarters, he was forced to sleep in the Ladies Powder Room for three months. He was therefore restricted from his own room from 6:30 in the morning until late at night. Q bhp I In i957 Brophy reclaimed all of The old buildings from Xavier. Dedication plus hard work. This sums up the 1978 Brophy Bronco football team. In some cases it looked as if David and Goliath were battling since the Broncos, with Pygmy Mania support, continued to down larger and stronger opponents. In fact, the Broncos came out on top twelve out of thirteen. It was the first time in many years that the success of the gridders carried over to the student body. Both friends and foes of football cheered for a team that the critics felt was just plain lucky? Proved them wrong was what we did. How does a 10 - 0 regular season catch you, especially for a team mediocre at best? Central, St. Mary's twice, Cortez and Amphitheater were among the Goliaths which were slain. Everyone was out to get us, to put us where they thought we belonged. It took the state champions, Mountain View, to make us settle for- second best, one defeat. The Broncs came marching in this year and have every reason to be proud of themselves. Congratulations! Mike Sheedy 51 pw I hx, 'GN N? . ,, x t +,.. f,4as'1fi 'N :swf 00?'BA1L Mr . After an outstanding football season, most people expected very little from the basketball team here at Brophy. However, there were a few believers, namely Coach John Chambers and his team. As it turned out, they had the pleasure of the last laugh as the Bronco cagers rolled to an l l - l record and the Skyline A-League crown. They entered the division playoffs favored, and behind the play of all- league player Jim Dodenhoff defeated Moon Valley. However, they then fell to the Cortez Colts 68-66 in overtime and again the following night to Apollo, thus ending their hopes for a berth in the state tournament. The year was especially profitable from the standpoint of experience gained. The team was led by a fine crop of juniors, among these were Greg Taylor, Larry Seppelfrick, Rick Miller, Eric Darcy, and Bill Kennedy. But, as with most teams, the seniors were the mainstay. Key players were Kevin McCann, Paul Fanta, John Frost, John Fournier, and Chris Bayley. Next year the Broncos should be strong with five returnees, two of them starters from this yearts squad.
