Row 2 — Coach Jim Abbott, Julie Hills, Judy Wasielewski, Pat Kamp, Cathy Minor, Lisa Decker, Kathleen Van Kuren, Joanne Thorne, Bill Kolly, Manager. Broome’s Women’s Basketball team capped off its best season ever by winning a third place trophy at the N.J.C.A.A. Region HI Tournament in March. Broome, rated only fifth, knocked off both the fourth and the third rated teams, losing only to eventual tournament winner, Herkimer C.C. Broome finished the year 13-7, setting a new record for wins and new records in both field goals and foul shots attempted and made. While basketball is a team sport, one player stood out, freshman Kathleen Van Kuren. She set 10 new school records, all previously held by Kelly O'Connell. The new records were total points — 344 (old record was 238), field goals attempted and made, foul shots attempted and made for a single season and career. Thus, Kath- leen, in one year, set several two year records. Kathleen also won two individual honors for the school, as she was selected to the first team All- Tournament team and second All-Region III team. Another Freshman, Shelly Hawkins was selected to the second team All-Tournament team. Seniors, Paula Simeck and Joanne Thorne capped off fine careers at Broome by also setting new records. Paula set game season and career records for steals and Joanne set a season record for rebounds. Row 2 — Jane Benas, Jann Williams, Vicki Tomsons, Coach Ken Sanford. The women’s tennis team dominated the fall sports scene at B.C.C., finishing an undefeated season by captur- ing the regional champion- ships. After 11 dual triumphs, coach Ken Sanford’s team won the regionals as five of the six contestants won in her cate- gory of competition. It was the second regional title in succes- sion for Jules Mohney. e ‘ : ' ‘ HAY x SOON eeateteae tee 140 aa. . Row 3 — Dawn Hartman, Mary Callahan, Lisa Decker, Donna Benowski, and Coach Jerry Hlopko. Returning to the women’s sports limelight, basketball stars Kathy Van Kuren, Shelly Hawkins and Paula Simek led the fast softball start, along with volleyball player, Donna Benowski, who was the team’s pitching star. Kathy Van Kuren’s .431 bat- ting average, and 36 runs scored led the women’s soft- ball team, while Shelly Hawk- ins’ 37 runs batted in were tops. These two young ladies also led in home runs with 4 each. Paula Simek was also a strong factor on offense, bat- ting .375. Pitching star, Donna Benowski, won 12 and lost 4. She thus figured in 16 of the team’s 19 won-lost decisions. 142 “+ Ss bt oe ao 7. ae a wd 2bom ee ee eS ee Be a eee ‘ fee eS Pg ae — 2 a ore . aes” Ie Loe 143 (Bib BINGHAMTON MILY Di JOMNSON CITY : -MESTAL PARKWAY WOMEN) D VOLLEYBALL Row 1 — Dawn Hartman, Dee Catalano, Kathy Van Kuren, Cheryl LeDuc, Kathy Lasicki, Dot Transue.
