Text from Pages 1 - 224 of the 1977 volume:

After much thought I have decided to put a small introduction into this year’s yearbook. Not knowing what to say, I'll try to give you some of my thoughts on life. Many have said that life always ends in tragedy, this is true, but life is too short to worry about small or large tragedies, so remember the good times. Don’t sell life short until you've lived it a little longer (at least another day). But above all have faith in yourself, and in everything you do. This may seem like nonsense and foolishness now, but it may make some sense in later years. I hope it will, because someone has to explain it to me. I really didn’t think about what I wrote, and neither should you. So just Peace, Happiness, and Long Life ... Dr. Reddig attended many of our mixers when he could have been home with his family. He also attended the spring picnic, dinner theaters and the student gov- ernment meetings. Dr. Reddig was our acting presi- dent and the vice president for stu- dent affairs which meant he spent most of his time with the students and working with their problems ... When the students were right he stood with them, if they were wrong he unselfishly gave of his time and advice. GARY THIS IS FOR YOU FOR ALL THE WORK YOU DID FOR US ... Of B.C. ce And Men Mr Ma bt 72 73 Jesse Owens s Jeese Owens, winner of four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics, was a guest speaker at Broome Community College this year. He spoke about the ups and downs of his career, and told stories about the adversities of other famous Americans. After giving a talk, of approximately a half an hour, Mr. Owens answered questions for another half an hour. The questions ranged from aspects of the Olympics he participated in, and more recent ones, to some economic points of interest. Everyone in attendence, of Mr. Owens speaking, apparently had a good time, with many staying to shake his hand and say hello. Upon leaving the school Mr. Owens spent the afternoon in his downtown hotel room preparing for another speaking engagement that night. He spoke to a group of concerned people about criminal actions of teenagers and prison reform. He speaks on these subjects, and others, all across the country. Mr. Owens was a highlight speaker at Broome this year, and should be remembered by all, from our area, who listened and spoke to him. The yearbook’s personal would like to thank Mr. Jesse Owens for coming to Binghamton and speaking at Broome. Karl Tatham and Steve Kuratnick were second and third (4 goals — 6 assists, and 4 goals — 7 assists, respectively.) Both the offense and defense were inconsistent. The defense winning 4—- shutouts, but also giving up 9 goals one game. Offensively the team scored as many as 6 goals in a game, but they were also shutout 3 times (once 1-0). The inconsistance play of both offense and defense is the major factor in the sub .500 season. Hopefully the soccer team will be stronger next year and have a better season. MAC Graduation °77 206 faa seaett’ rigid fiat, eed lig 209 zu PRESS, Binghamton, N.Y. Wed., April 20, 1977 Friend's Reminder: Make the Time We used to meet trom time to time in a supermarket at Hinman’s Corners where our wives shopped for groceries. We'd stop and talk for a while, usually about fishin g and deer hunting, whichever was in season, Then, after we'd blocked traffic for a while, we'd go our separate ways Our last encounter was a little more than a week ago It was early in the trout season, and so we talked about fishing. He hadn’t been out yet, and I’d been out only once, not to fish, but to write about the ritual of opening day ‘I just haven't had the time.” I said. ‘Well, you've just got to make the time,”’ he replied ‘No problem,’’ I answered as we parted. “It’s a long season.” That was the last time I saw him. Last Friday night the season ended for Bob Pufky. It ended with an awful suddenness that stunned everyone who knew him. He had taken his wife to a dance and, as usual, was enjoying himself. Then, suddenly, he fell during a dance. Friends thought at first he had tripped. He hadn't. He was dead, just like that. He was 40. Too young Bob Pufky was director of admissions at Broome Community College during the last 10 years. They were tumultuous years for the college, with traumatic changes in administration, a seemingly endless string of financial crises, faculty discontent, and almost constant sniper fire from county politicians who seized on the college's internal problems as a sure-fire device for personal publicity Through all of this Bob managed to hang on to his sense of humor and his sense of purpose. Those were growth years for the college. When Bob took over the admissions office in 1966, the full-time regular day enrollment was 1,618. This year it is 2,652. Bob didn’t bring them all in, obviously. But if anyone had the impression he did, it was understandable. Like BCC public relations chief Marv Behr, his close friend, Bob was involved in a continuing love affair with the college. His work, like Marv’s, wasn’t measured in 40- hour weeks, because it never seemed to stop and start It was Just always there. Bob’s chief fault, Marv was saying the other day, was 212 that he couldn’t say no. He was always available to represent the college whenever a school wanted a speaker on college preparation. And it wasn’t just a matter of selling BCC. Bob would talk about college entrance requirements in general as often as he'd talk about getting into BCC. He was an easy mark, and if people took advantage of Robert Pufky ..Died too young him, he didn’t seem to mind, because it was always for a good cause. Despite his willingness, though, it must have quietly and insidiously taken its toll. It's as if a tiny chip came off every time he agreed to some extra duty. And there was plenty of that, because BCC gets more of Broome County's college-bound high school graduates than any other single college in the country. And they were all processed through the office that Bob Pufky headed. That is not to say he processed them all, because he didn’t. But still the task is enormous, and it isn’t built into any neat time limits the way admissions are in many larger colleges. ‘Admissions is a different ball game for a communi- ty college.”’ Marv said. “We accept kids later than most schools, because in many cases, it’s a late decision. A kid will be accepted at some other college and then late in the summer his parents will discover they can't afford to send him away after all. So at the last minute they decide to send him to BCC.” Pufky accepted that hectic uncertainty the way he accepted life. He took what it threw at him and made the best of it. He was the kind of guy who should not have been struck down in what we like to call the prime of life. The guy who is a candidate for early departure is the one who keeps his angers and frustrations bottled up inside until they explode and kill him. Bob wasn’t like that. “He was no phony,’ Marv said. You always knew exactly where you stood with him. If he didn’t like something he'd say so, and if he did like it he'd let you know.” It was hard to think of Bob being inactive, Marv said. He was always doing something. and he seemed to delight most in those things he could do with his three children. 1 guess that’s so, because in thinking back about some of the fishing experiences he talked about, as often as not they involved the kids. It was obvious he enjoyed their company as much as the activity itself. It's almost as if he knew he was going to be cheated by the clock and was determined to make the most of a short allotment Bob was right, you've got to make time ROBERT PUFKY 1937-1977 Broome Community College’s Admission Direc- tor Robert Pufky, died suddenly last April 1977. His passing came as a severe shock to all those that knew him. Bob Pufky was a man of understanding; he cared for people and was truly interested in them. He was a man who lived his faith, and many who knew him called Bob Pufky unique. He was different than most people and had a mysterious- ness and joy within himself. Bob Pufky was a man of priorities, God, family, and people. He understood the need of constantly evaluating his priorities, and to be mindful of where his joy came from. and yet willing to change them when the need arose. One of his often-said sayings was ‘We must never lose the capacity to smile.” His love of life could be seen most in his integri- ty and trustworthiness as a person. Bob Pufky would always tell everyone to smile, to laugh, and be happy. Bob Pufky will remain in the hearts of those who have known and loved him for a long time to come. For photographs; Mr. and Mrs. Tony Vlasak, Mike Hranek, Dave Beach, Helen Stecyk and the Fulcrum photo file. Acting editor-in-chief, Frederick Shumaker Editor’s Message As I sit here to put down my last feelings as editor of the 1977 Citadel, I am sloshing down another beer I don’t really need. I've been at Broome for 3 years and had good times and bad times, but I tend to forget the bad and remember the good. I’ve worked for the Yearbook, Newspaper, Social Activities, Circle K, Chemistry Club, Budget Com- mittee, Athletics, Awards Banquet, and probably a few others. For all this, and all my class time and work, all I have left is memories, and memories is all I ask! I didn’t make much of my educational opportunities at B.C.C. and I can only hope that other students do better than I did at their class work. I was known as a jokester to most, a thinker of some deep thoughts to some very close friends, and a student to very few. I've said enough of my accomplishments and myself. I must thank the following people for making my 3 years at Broome enjoyable. Mac: a father-like figure who always stuck by me — through thick and thin. Mrs. Snover: a steady flow of encouragement, thought, love, and kind- ness to me. No words can express the way I feel about her. Mary Jean Williams and Sandy (Tholen) Nugent: these two taught me 98% of what I know about yearbooks, life, and living. Roger Hammond: although many people don’t know it, Roger gave me a new insight into life, not one I agreed with, but an insight. Dave Staff and Wayne Troicke: two of the best friends I’ve ever had, except Mac and Mrs. Snover, are no longer at Broome, but all were working for the students. This year has produced a new crop of such people. In time of need I searched them out and asked their opinions. Rick Shumaker: the world’s biggest flake and the flightiest person I’ve ever known. Rick has a way of looking at everything, a way no one else would, and can give amazingly simple solutions to seemingly unsolvable situations. Mitch Tiffany: really quiet, but the hardest worker and the best drinker (next to me and Rick) I know. Some non-students also deserve my thanks. They are John Young, Tony Vlasic (and his wife), Howard Herzog and Bill Celano. John is always ready to reproduce a picture or help out in a bind. Tony and Mrs. V. run Varden Studios, the people who print all of our pictures. Bill Celano, my yearbook representative: Without Bill there would be no yearbook because he made sure we got the work done for deadlines, and saw to it that the printing went just right. Last, but not least, is my advisor, Howard Herzog. Mr. Herzog made himself avail- able for meetings with all the important people in the yearbook business. What I finally have to say is, its been a tough year, but with the help of the people I’ve mentioned I managed to make it through. This year produced what I would like to think is a good yearbook, but there will be those who don’t agree. So to those who can find fault and have 20-20 hindsight I have just this advice. Join the staff and make changes. To everyone else good luck, and long life. Thanks for all you've given me. 215 SS Rea a OW 3 eas pe (lll Bis a dat!
