BROOME ' COMMUNITY COLLIE, = BINGHAMTON N.Y. = So w A ee CITA DEL-192 Ogg — EDICATION — FATHER FRED Father Fred has been a stand-out personality on our campus for two years. Pictures of the Campus Minister appear throughout the yearbook attending various activities with students. Because of his deep involvement and personal concern for students, we of the Citadel staff wish to dedicate the 1976 yearbook to Father Fred Pompei. % 4 ia” 1H ; Nr eet © Se ee Fae Pls. Bie OT od We ‘. Obviously a very happy baby. Father Fred at the mature age of 15. One of Father Fred’s favorite passtimes is writing poetry. We of the Citadel staff obtained the following poem, written about love by Father Fred, and printed it in hopes of showing some insight into his personality. Alone, a solitary figure sat in solitude and gazed upon his crucified Lord A heart filled and whispered softly “TI love you so”’ In the quiet and stillness of that moment His God smiled at him then And inside his heart He heard him say “I know” He brought His love to a mountain, a special place and walked amid the colored leaves. The sun, its light filtering upon their path as they passed a rock where he had sat and found their love. He stopped and pointed to the ground His eyes, a memory of agony and pain She turned and looked at him then And he heard her say “I know” They walked up a hill, a cross was there He stood apart from her as she gazed beyond He wanted to take her in his arms He loved her so A gentle breeze crossed their face A voice inside him whispered then CROSS And he heard it say “I know” He left that day, a different man WILL @ TRAVEL A solitary figure and his love Now she walks beside him and softly takes his arm And smiles at him then Father Fred’s college graduation picture. Karl Tathem was this year’s leading scorer, with 7 goals and 9 assists, he was followed closely by Dennis Chavez, who had 5 goals and 7 assists. Jeff Angivine had an outstanding season as Broome’s goalie allowing only 28 goals through all season. The entire team deserves praise for a fine season and coach Davenport is to be congratulated for bringing his teams from 0- 11-2 to 7-6 in just three short seasons. We wish the Soccer team continued success in future years. ? ee omeenaeneene le seamen - Y WOMEN'S TENNIS The Women’s Tennis team hustled their way to 7-1 record this season, losing only a heart-breaker to Herkimer. Kim Hartford was the team’s outstanding player with an 8-0 personal record, as the team’s 1 player. The team’s 3 and 4 players, Peggy Smith and Loretta Glover, each posted 7-1 personal records. Broome also tied for first in the Region II] Tournament because of their 7-1 record, with Kim Hartford receiving a gold medal for herself and a plaque for the school for being the region’s overall 1 player. Congratulations girls, on your team’s accomplishments, and especially to Kim Hartford and Nancy Rossiter, the Women's Tennis coach. Larry Lane was the team’s top scorer and best all-around player. For his great play on both ends of the court, Larry was named to the Region III first team, as well as third team in the national standings. Pat Duggan, while usually outsized, was never out-manned. Pat was the sparkplug of the offense, hitting on key baskets, and single-handedly breaking the full court press on more than a score of occassions. Jim Waitcavage was the teams leading re- bounder and biggest player, and Jim had a large part to do with the team’s success. Congratulations to the 75-76 Basketball Hor- nets, and hopes for more success for Coach Baldwin in the future. Golf team finished with the highest won-lost percentage of all of Broome’s sports teams, with a 12-1 record. The lone loss was the teams first loss in the past three seasons. Broome’s great seasonal record placed them as the number one seed in the regional tourna- ment, unfortunately the team finished in third place. The brightest note, for an already bright season, was sending Chris Lane to the National Tournament in Galveston, Texas. Chris played well enough in the first and second rounds of the tourna- ment to survive the cut of the field eas- ily, and had a chance of becoming an All-American. Chris missed this honour by a few strokes, but played better than many of the other golfers at the Nation- als. Congratulations to Chris Lane and the entire B.C.C. Golf team for a fine season. Hopefully Coach Lockwood will be able to put another outstanding team on the fairways again next year. 139 V OLLEY BALE ‘eit ERLEADERS EQUESTRIAN 143 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL. The Women’s Basketball team finished with a disappointing 0-12 season’s record, but their record does not tell how good the team could have been. They were continually playing tal- ler opponents (with B.C.C.’s tallest player only 5'11”), and lost four games by 10 pts. or less. There were streaks of brillance on both offense and defense in more than one game, but Broome always seemed to let down at a crucial moment and lost games that were not as close as could have been. The team’s leading scorer for the season was Carleen Mohney with 158 of the team’s 417 pts., for a 13.2 pts. per game average. Hopefully Head Coach Abbott will have more success in his second year as coach than in his first. Because of their season’s record and Broome’s tradition of out- standing baseball teams, Broome was seeded first in the regional competition. The team did not fair as well as it was thought they would, by being shut out in the championship game Broome ended up in sec- ond place. The Baseball Hornets did have a potent hitting at- tack, lead by Dan Cozza, who hit over .400 as the designated hitter and right fielder. Cozza was named to the regional all star team for his batting feats. On defense the big name was Dave Kernis. Kernis stepped in to second base, after playing third last year. Dave was also named to the regional all star team, marking the third year in a row that Broome’s second baseman has made the team. Pitching was strong again this year with over half of the team’s pitchers having ERA’s of under 2.25. Hopefully Coach Daub will be able to put another strong team out on the baseball field again next year. RO ee Pace J ss ache ce ae — Cae ote . _ hot Otani TENNIS B.C.C. Fulcrum editor, Clayton Ellis. The FULCRUM is the campus student newspaper. It provides the campus an insight to campus problems, as well as covering sports events and all camp us oriented happenings. The FULCRUM is a vital part of our campus life and de- serves every student’s support. 76-77 Co-Editors Kim Berry and Geneva Root. FULCRUM x a student publication 180 LukeComments On USG’s 75-76 Activities Earlier in the semester I was looking through our ‘‘archives’’ (to the unaided eye a grey cabinet) and stumbled onan old issue of the FULCRUM entitled ‘‘Nickerson’s Message to BCC.’’ Al Nickerson was a previous student government president, and the newspaper had allowed him 2-3 of the front page for a farewell address. My emotions were mixed. At first I was mildly jealous that he was given this much publicity. Later a feeling of insecurity began sneaking its way into my heart. You see, by that dateI had not been approached by the newspaper and asked to compose a similar article. Did this mean that the feats of my administration had gone undetected? Or, worse yet, were they worthy of note!? I told myself that there were still several weeks left yet and that the scribes of the FULCRUM had not felt it appropriate to ask at such an early date. That notion disappeared when there was only two weeks of school left! I was sitting in the Senate office drafting a scathing editorial blasting the FULCRUM for its lack of interest in the awesome course that history had taken in the past year. As I was slinging mad and downgrading the staff, Dave Gardiner from the newspaper entered the office and asked me if I would like to write amessage similar to what I have been describing. At first I sat back as though doubtfully contemplating the concept. In reality, I would have grabbed him if he hesitated. So, I reluctantly agreed to write this and asked what the deadline would be, (implying I would do it if I had time.) It is now only a few hours since he asked and I am scrib- bling as fast as possible. To add a final measure of pseudoaloofness I probably wouldn’t submit this until a few hours before the deadline. Anyway, I seem to have gone off on a tangent. Let me call upon my near- photographic memory. (I call it near- SG. The comments on this page show what your U.S.G. has done this year. Every action this group takes is designed to help you, the student. As the head governing body for all campus activities U.S.G. takes up the plight for the student’s rights as citizens. Support your U.S.G. photographic because it only operates while near photographs.) We have made great strides, performed noteworthy achievements, and introduced innovations unequalled in this state. For example: (not necessarily in order of importance) A, student elected to a position in the student government will now be able to earn credit applicable to graduation. This has the effect of reducing the academic workload of a student by eliminating the requirement for an elective course. A substantial part of the campus believes that the function of the Student Government is to decide on the type of candy in the vending machines, or how much _ the overdue charge ona library book should be. The work is much more serious and requires a substantial amount of time. Conferring credit is one way to allow a student to participate and simultaneously maintain a respectable average. It is also done in lieu of what is called a stipend. A stipend is a salary paid to the individual to offset what could have been earned in a part-time job. The idea has merit. However, as for as elected offices are concerned, I feel that it would only tend to attract mer- cenaries and not represent the best interests of the student body. The county legislature sought to end open enrollment at this sehool to reduce their financial obligation and to ‘‘increase the quality of education.” This defeats the purpose of the community college and penalizes the educationally deprived by guaranteeing that they will remain in that state. Therefore, we support the faculty of this college when they invoked a ‘‘work to rule’”’ policy. At that time the faculty’s contract was five months overdue and is still un finished. We are now using the campus computer system for finance and maintenance of documents. The finance program in the computer system is capable of handling approximately 6000 transactions for 65 organization and computing the current balance of any of these immediately. This is another first for this campus and is done in only one other college in the state. For this I would like to thank Dave Copeland and the computer center staff. We now have a student on the college Board of Trustees and are now able to directly give ‘‘a word to the wise’. This past year Ellen Donnelly was on the board and she is being followed by Mary O’Neill. A new constitution was inaugurated last fall. As a direct result of this: 1. Next year’s budgets are now completed and the perpetual hassle of not knowing how much money you will receive when it is eliminated. (This is a big first). 2. Club representatives are not required to attend all Senate meetings as they were last year. Instead wa have a Club Council that meets periodically to handle club affairs. 3. We have a Judicial Review Board that replicates the purpose of the U.S. Supreme Court. In all, we have a system that is unexcelled by any community college in this state and is more comprehensive than most four year schools. Student elections have a history of being contested each semester. However, this Outgoing USG President Walter Luke. past election, there were no ‘grotesque miscarriages of justice’, and they are unblemished. I now thank the faculty and administrative personnel who helped at the polling area for their assistant. BCC no longer has an acting president. Instead, Dr. Blomerly has been instated as our new president and we have one less “acting’’ position. I feel that it is significant that student government members were on the search committee throughout the entire process and took part in the voting. Throughout the year, and at the time of this writing, we have battled with college trustees concerning the activity fee. For some mystical reason, they feel that a fixed amount of the Student Activity Fee should be allocated to athletics. They also have a simplistic concept concerning areas receiving Student Activity Fee money; athletics, and then everybody else. Fur- thermore, it is only incidental that the program is totally funded. Concluding, we have had excellent relations with the faculty, staff, and ad- ministration. It seems that we can ac- complish a lot when we're not occupied slandering and downgrading each other. I hope this trend continues. In any case, I would like t o thank all the Student Govern- ment members who endured through the year and wish our new members good luck. Lori To Mrs. Snover: I leave someone else flakey to come jump around in front of her to make her smile. Lori Rich. If the shoe fits wear it. Roger A. Hammond. To Dave Midleton: I leave my legs for next years Hockey season. Good Luck guys. Chris Sipel. To Dave Gardinier: How’s Trenton this time of year? It was rotten in February when we were there by mistake! John Bolles. EDITOR'S MESSAGE I will admit, that this past year has not been all bad. I met a lot of good friends and together we have had a lot of good times. You will find throughout the 75-76 yearbook, the Citadel; how friends have fun together. This yearbook has recorded the past year which has been put together by a few students. I would like to thank these few people who put in a lot of hard work in making it possible. They are: John, Denise, Karen and Lori. John Bolles, my Associate Editor, put in many long hours doing layouts, which has been desperately needed. Karen Bobik, yearbook Layout Editor, a person who did a lot of yearbook work at home, a thing even I wouldn't do. My Sports Editor, Denise Battaglia, who worked hard at the difficult task of coordinating the sports section. And last, a special thanks to Lori Rich, a staff member, a person who worked hard and long doing any work I asked her to do without a complaint. All my luck and hope goes to the 75-76 yearbook staff. May you find peace and happiness the rest of you're lives. In conclusion, I will only say I have learned a lot. I have found that life goes by too fast not to enjoy every minute of it, every second of it, a thing I have failed to do this past year. Feeling sad and lost because of past experiences and disappointments makes for a wasted life and I know this only by my own experience. In reality, experience is the best teacher that anyone could ever have. So, go on in persuit of a better society in which all can live in peace and happiness, for that is the only society worth having. I wrote this little note to fill a void left on the bottom of this page. Although I don’t know what to write, I thought I could use a lot of words and say nothing, a trend that is becoming more and more popular, and if you don’t believe me read one of Jerry Donnelly’s termpapers! I decided to tell about my school year ... Having not missed a class in over three solid weeks in the first semester, I decided to go to a conference in Syracuse. Syracuse lead to Albany, which lead to Washington, D.C. Needless to say my grades fell considerably, but I met many people and I wouldn't trade my experiences for a 4.0 academic average. To all of the graduating class and all of my friends and anyone else who deserves it, have fun and live happy. | ag B. ; | g c { ‘ 209 U.5.G. Why do men then now not reck his rod? Generations have trod, have trod, have trod: And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil; And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil Is bare now, nor can foot fell, being shod. And for all this, nature is never spent; There lives the dearest freshness deep down things; And though the last lights off the black West went Oh, morning at the brown brink eastward springs — Because the Holy Ghost over the bent World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.
