You have given a great deal of time and a part of yourselves for the students. When graduation forces us to depart, memories will part with us. Memories of your guidance, understanding, patience, and laughter. These will be some of the best memories we take with us. A diploma is only a piece of paper, but Roger and Irene, you're the friendship and leadership that will never tear or fade away with age. May those who come to Broome after us, learn to understand and appreciate you both the way we of the Citadel do. The Citadel Staff thereby dedicates a part of themselves to you through this small dedication in the 1975 Citadel. Roger, as a chaperone you're great You always bring your smiling face You better start slowing down You're wife can’t keep up with the pace The work you do for Circle K And the pleasure you give us at night At mixers and movies and semiformals Roger that make the Dedication about right. Irene you're like our mother, After the years it took to get away from the grasp of home life you put us back in the nook You're concerned about us I guess you always will be And when we graduate Perhaps then you'll set us free. see LAME DED IN Bes A Ww petasse” ta Asi t on “a neta ihm ak he ¥ ne oF wt pe Mretln Ny DAA Ae ALM s oe rage i HER 12 IENTATION ; gt Re TO aoe How do you spell gain? These have been members of the Dental Hygiene Curriculum. Some of the people approached seem to have thought of these girls, and this last year one guy, to be self serving in asking the students to have their teeth cleaned. I would like to point out that if you do have your teeth cleaned, you are in actuality saving your- self money and giving your teeth a badly needed treat. Some people seem to think of the Dental Hy- giene Clinic as a midieval torture chamber — it is not. The Dental Hygiene Clinic has done an outstanding job and has performed their services for many people, adults and children alike. The Dental Hygiene Clinic provides other services to the students. They provide full x-rays, charting and other similar serv- ices. The Dental Hygiene Clinic is there for your use — please use it. Don’t wait for them to come looking for you — go to them in the Science Building and set up an appointment. The Dental Hygiene Clinic would like to point out to you that the clinic is not run to replace your regular dental appointments, but to supplement them. sete Rael ete BREA CIRCLE K Circle K is a service organization composed of Broome Community College students interested in working with the underprivileged, needy, and the sick children (at local hospitals) in the community. The students raise money through raffles and pizza sales and use the proceeds for sponsoring parties for chil- dren. Easter time finds Circle K members volun- teering their time at local hospitals visiting the chil- drens ward dressed as Easter Rabbits. Halloween and Christmas find the Students sponsoring parties in the Union lounge for Headstart children. The leader of this generous group is Roger Marion who is one of the duo we have dedicated this book to. Roger lends a hand. Carnation sale sponsored by Circle K. Gift-wrapping for Christmas party. The team was expected the finish high in the Regionals, unfortunately they didn’t do well enough for the whole team to qualify for the nationals, but Pat Maher did go as an individual. At the nationals Pat did well enough to finish in the top half of the field. Coach Hartman is wished continued luck and success at Canisius College. Cross Country Team SOCCER “GAMBIAN CONNECTION” DISCONNECTED The Broome CC Soccer Team had a very dis- appo inting season this year, although this year’s record (4-7-2)was considerably better than last year’s (0-11-2). This year’s team was advertised to have a “world-wide” line-up, including Costa Rican import Dennis Chavez and the “Gambian Connection” duo of Momodou Sonko and Momodou Ceesay. The “Gam- bian Connection” raised Broome’s hopes of recreating the Soccer power it once had. Unfortunately, none of the predictions developed; and the Soccer Hornets fell below the .500 mark again this year. The failure of this year’s team can be contributed to the lack of team play and the uncontrolled individual play of our “power” players. The “Gambian Connection” failed to materialize and the team spirit was nowhere to be found. The Hornets victimized teams from Keystone Junior College, Hudson Valley CC, Sullivan CC, and the JV’s of Baptist Bible Seminar this year, and tied games with Monroe CCC and Orange CCC. The prob- lem of the team not functioning as an unit was due largely to injuries. When both goalies, Putrino and Angevine were injured during regular season play, Coach Davenport was forced to use highly regarded Momodou Ceesay as goalie. Dennis Chavez led the team in both goals and assists, and local talent Don Evans continued to be impressive. Next year, team play will have to develop more fully if a winning season is expected. Participating for Broome in the Regionals were Loretta Glover in singles competition and the doubles team of Mary Kelly and B. J. Reynolds. In the singles division, Lo- retta put up a valiant struggle, but was defeated in 3 of her 4 matches. Loretta will be back at Broome next year and should add power and experience to the team. The doubles tandem faired somewhat better in their division by winning all of their matches. This marks the second year that Mary and B. J. have brought the regional doubles title to Broome. The twelve wins this season set a new team record for total season wins. This year the team was well balanced in talent. Although the senior contingent of this year’s team was most solid, several fresh- man looked especially promising. Seniors Mike Burczak, Cliff Herman, and Al Schmidt were all named to the Academic All-American team. Schmidt had probably the best season of any of the wrestlers. He placed first at the Niagra Invitational Tour- nament, placed second at the Regional but lost in a disputed first round match in the Nationals. The best looking freshman wres- tler was Jim McLain. McLain placed high in the Regionals and, also lide Schmidt, was involved in a conflict at the Nationals be- fore he bowed out. Coach Beston must be saluted for his advancement of the wrestling program here at Broome. From a winless season several years back to a 12-7 record is some accom- plishment. Coach Beston cutely summed up the season by saying, “Wrestlers need sup- porters”. Wrestling Team and Managers Women’s Varsity Volleyball Team Goes To The NATIONALS The women’s varsity volleyball team posted a winning season this year. They won 13 and lost 3 to tough opponents. Four weeks before the first season game the team was chosen, and practice began. Two freshmen, Deb Bosket and Ruth Covert, were the strongest spikers on the team, with Pat Barnum as the most consistent. The team had a pre-season slump caused by individual ef- forts being used on court, not team play. Each member matured throughout the season, and team play became more evident. Broome’s record tied them for second place in the re- gion. In late November, when the team record was 10-2, Coach Rossiter sent in a bid for an invitation to the first women’s NJCAA vol- leyball tournament. Broome was given an in- vitation to participate in the tournament at Catonsville, Maryland. The final results found Broome in 7th place overall. Basketball Team had one of their most disappointing seasons ever. The Hornets finished the season with a dismal 18-15 record. But it must be remembered that Broome plays one of the toughest schedules in the region. The Hornet’s participated against five clubs that were placed in the top 20 in the nation and all the top teams from both Region III and Region IV. The Hornets played most of the season lacking the needed teamwork to succeed. At one point, Coach Baldwin threatened that Broome would not participate in the Regionals if his team didn’t materialize. Lacking togetherness, the Hornets stumbled into the Regionals to be blown off the court by a mediocre Monroe C.C. (87-76) in a first round game. Sonny Gooden had a very impressibe season for the Hornets by devastating the boards and hitting the clutch shots time after time during the season. Don Barvinchak gave the Hornets the needed punch off the bench throughout the year. Both Larry Lane and Pat Dugan will give Broome the much needed strength next year to build a championship club. What Coach Baldwin does with the club next year will be no surprise if the interest in the basketball team continues to decline. The team received out- standing support by Deb Bosket in the scoring depart- ment as well as tight defense. It was another case where a sport has all the talent needed for a winning season, but no unity as far as instituting plays on the court. The women however, all worked hard and when faced by tough opposition, the unity almost came about. There were, however, several cases of poor officiating which lowered morale. Next year, Wes Van Dunk will be unable to coach, and it will be up to the new coach to improve the two year record of 5 wins and 11 losses. Has the Hornet Tennis team lost its sting? According to Coach Winters early this season, he felt he had a strong squad and now thought that he had the maturity he was missing last year. However the Hornets were swatted with their worst record ever in their history this year. The seniors who Winters was relying on didn’t come through as expected. Doug Jones and Joe Wasielewski had very inconsistent seasons while the freshman contingent left more to be desired compared to years of the past. The team finished out of the running in the Regionals and only Doug Jones looked impressive. Coach Winters will have to work with what he has as there is no Smith or Rosics in sight. It looks like the Hornet Tennis dynasty has mellowed. GOLF sithdiv AEE ORR 2 3 The Golf team had an outstanding season, going undefeated for the second straight year. Despite the fine season, the team was dis- appointed in the Regionals by finishing second, not first. Although the team did not qualify for the nationals, Joe Zwier- zynski did. Sorrowfully Joe missed the cut-off point after two rounds of play. Experience was gained by all the members of this year’s ex- ceptional team. Broome Communi College ayy 159 WOMEN'S SOFTBALL Bottom row: Pat Barnum, Judy Lewis, B. J. Reynolds Middle row: Terri Shaner, Coach Rossiter, Robin Kunkle Top row: Chris Sipel, Deb Bosket, Ginny Evan, Nancy Colgan, Mary Williams, Debbie Reynolds The Women’s Softball team, under coach Nancy Rossiter compiled a season’s record of 5-5. This included a double- header sweep of Schenectady and Adarondack by a com- posite score of 102-11. This must be considered the highlight of a tough schedule that included six games in the last six days of the season of which four games were in double- headers. The .500 record can be attributed to errors, with two players each having twenty. The plague of errors seems to have been balanced out by an outstanding hitting attack, a team average of .424, lead by B. J. Reynolds and Nancy Colgan, who batted .551 and .541 respectively. Added to this, Val Keely belted 4 home runs. BASEBALL The B.C.C. Baseball team had another fine season. The team had an overall bat- ting average of .300 and an E.R.A. of 1.71 while compiling a 20-2 won-lost record. Leading this year’s hitting was Paul Rappa with a .434 average. Rappa banged out 33 hits in 76 at bats, he also stole 27 bases and scored 28 runs. Backing Rappa’s sensational season were Joe Hein, Dave Farrell, and Bob Cahill, batting .365 (23-63), .365 (19-52), and .350 (14-40) respectively. The home run output was low, only 2, but the team man- aged to smash 17 triples. Along with the consistent batting, quality pitching is also needed for a winning team. Bruce Stanton led this year’s pitching staff with an E.R.A. of .749, and had a record of 3-0. David Dopp (2-0) and Bob Pavese (5-0) also had outstanding years on the mound with E.R.A.’s of .88 and .99 respectively. The team was seeded second in the Regionals, but lost a 9-1 decision to Monroe C.C. in the second round of play. All team mem- bers had key roles in this year’s out- standing season. To the Board of Trustees, a little more faith and trust in the students at Broome for someday they may inherit your jobs. To U.S.G., a $120,000 income with no Sports expenditures. To Olga Finch, a Dick Baldwin dictation doll To new U.S.G. officers, a winning season. To Dr. Horvath, good luck at your new job. To Jim O’Neil, a wind-up pucker doll. To Dr. Reddig, two years supply of Excedrin for the coming year. To R. Bruce MacGregor, one stubborn ass. To Dick Baldwin, one Watusi basketball team. To Gary Finch, a bookstore with the correct amount of textbooks. To Marv Behr, a public willing to relate to him. To Larry Maier, may you receive the chairmanship of any department of your choice. To Marie Ford, a new set of cheers and a pair of stilts to see them performed. To Roger Marion, loads of love and a large turn-out for Circle K. To Rick Goldman, one monkey with eight ball. To Ed Daub, one backstop gratefully donated by the County. To Oz Winters, one Weight Training Machine for fall classes 1984. To all the students of broome one bar to drink your troubles away (the county, trustees, administration, faculty, and BCC in general). I hereby bequeath that all of the following be given out as I have stated and that I take all the guff thrown back from my “‘friends’’. To Bill Davenport, 6 Soccer balls he forgot to buy for the 1974 season. To Ron Horvath, thanks for the non-biased suspension of I.A.A.C. To Jerry Nicholas, a one-years supply of Bayer aspirin each month, and a years supply of B.C.P. To Frank Norton, a roll of used Charmin Bathroom tissue to go with his crap facility (please don’t squeeze the Charmin too hard). To Dickie Baldwin, one outstanding basketball player from inside the boundaries of Broome County (Frank Norton is not acceptable to fill this vacancy). To the Trustees, the return of the much publicized Royal Shaft that they have always given the students. To Gary Reddig, patience, understanding and enough will power to make it through one more year. To all students, enough sense to know when to get out of a bad thing. To Jerry D. one $32,000 office in the union, a new one even. EDITOR’S MESSAGE Graduates and Seniors, I am proud to present to you the 1975 Citadel created by a hand-full of your fellow students. On behalf of these people I wish you good-luck in the future and hope you enjoy your yearbook. Few realize how many hours are given by the Citadel staff to complete this comprehensive memory album. Work is started early in September and completed in June of the following year. Many of you may not find pictures of yourself in the Citadel, but you know who you are. It’s your friends you'll want to remember. Two parttime photographers were unable to take everyone's picture, but they tried. My personal thanks and appreciation go to Roger Hammond, John Bolles, Sandi Tholen, Dave Staff, Sue Goldenberg, Lori Rich, and B. J. Reynolds for the valu- able time they gave up to work on this book. Mary Kelly as part-time typist was a tremendous help. Sincere appreciation and gratitude go to the following people at Broome who by helping me when needed also contributed to the creation of this book. They are; Irene Campo (you're beautiful), Roger Marion, Mrs. Snover, and R. Bruce MacGregor. Dr. Reddig, a special thank you to you. You’ve helped me in more ways than you realize. Broome C.C. needs more men like you and Mr. Hickey working for the students through the faculty. Nancy Rossiter, good luck in the “male” oriented Coaching department, everyone is out for themselve s. The 1975-76 Seniors should be given a sign of encour- agement for the year ahead, but I can’t seem to find any left in me. Broome has broken my spirit but not my ambition. To next years staff I offer a warning of beware, there are a lot of screwdrivers at Broome just waiting to screw the students.
