After fighting through two consecutive winless seasons previous, this year’s squad scored eight team victories in twenty-two matches, Coach Bill Beston was forced to work with all the problems a wrestling coach could. Including the usual inexperience and injuries; the coach had trouble filling weights with “true wrestlers.” The three most dominating wrestlers on this years squad were Al Schmidt, Mike Clapper, and Dave Ballard. At the 126 pound class; Schmidt posted a 10-1 record in dual meet competition. He also placed first in the Keystone Invitational Meet and was third in the regionals. Dave Ballard in the 158 pound class was devastating with a 17-4 dual meet record. His eighteen pins in dual meet corm- petition in his two years at Broome is a new school record. The other member of the trio is Mike Clapper. Mike was 13-3-1 in wrestling at the 142 pound weight class. Unfortunately Mike’s rib injury kept him out of regional competition. The season was also highlighted with Schmidt and Clapper placing on the JUCO “Academic All-American” Team. The unnarned wrestlers in this article showld be given a bulk of the credit for without their efforts, the team would have failed. This year’s wrestling team was indeed a successful one. 1973-1974 WRESTLERS Rick Goldman Al Schmidt Bill Heath Larry Roma Mike Clapper Cliff Herman Dave Ballard jim Pierce Tom McLain Tom Carle Bob Shuta Mike Burezak reaN ol © GOLF BROOME CINDERELLAMEN TOUGH IN REGION Coach Richard Baldwin was blessed with a crew of true golfers this season. The Golf team, which per- haps had it’s best season ever, went undefeated in dual meet competition and placed second in the sub regional competition. The team then ventured into the regional finals only to lose after the results of a poor first round. The players fought back and finished among the top five teams. The key strength of the team’s successful record was the all around team depth. The team’s consistency and the many out- standing individual performances pushed the team into post season competition. Outstanding perform- ances were exhibited throughout the season by Bob Russell, Bob Eldred, Bob Kolst, Barney Russell, and Bob Barden. Next year squad will definitely be re- spected by all foes after this season’s showing. 1973-1974 Golf Team CROSS COUN Ti. RUNNERS HAVE PROMISING SEASON This year the completely freshmen laden team exhibited what team spirit really is. Last year the team disbanded because the team lacked determined runners. This year under new coach Keith Hartman; the team has molded into a potential power of the future. These harriers were definitely “green” this year but a blossoming future is in sight. The most impressive runner of this year was Tim Hickling. Against Monroe CC, Hickling broke the four and one half mile course in 28 minutes and 14.7 seconds establishing a new course record. Other impressive run- ners who exhibited potential were Bob Cargill, Mike McNally, and Mike Clapper. Perserverance, hardwork, pride, and every day ritual of running the slopes of the Broome Campus may provide the necessary impetus to push this group of athletes into the winning habit. 1973-1974 Cross Country Team CLUB SPORTS EQUESTRIAN BETTY DILLON THIRD IN NATIONALS The riding team closed out another fine season with three riders being invited to regional competition. The three riders, Liz Giblin, Denise Paukett, and Betty Dillon, took seventh place with 14 points in competition. The competition was won by St. Lawrence with 26 points. A strong individual performance was put in by Betty Dillon who qualified for national competition with a first place in the walk trot center competition. At the National Intercollegiate Horseshow competition at Bucks County Community College; Bet- ty turned in another fine performance by finishing third in the Same category. Overall it was a good year for one of the few college riding teams that doesn’t have it’s own stables. TRACK BAO LI AORTA GS THIRD IN REGION The Broome Track Club sent a seven man team to the regionals at Morrisville this year. The team included Ray Lia, Tim Hickling, Tom Lawson, Al James, Bill LaRose, Dave Holzhauer, and John Robolotti. The team is still in the developing stages and will continue to grow if interest continues. This season was highlighted by the achievement of a third place finish for Ray Lia in the regionals. This year’s performances displays the fact that we have quality personne! to support a team. 153 ie CONGRATULATIONS COACH BALDWIN AND ALL THE HORNET TEAMS ON VICTORY 600 LEE STRUBECK RECEIVES ALL AMERICAN HONORABLE MENTION BASKETBALL “We'll probably be a good strong club by the time the end of the season rolls around.” Indeed Coach Baldwin was right as the inexperienced Hornets won their last nine games before losing to Niagara CC in the regional finals. This season will probably be one of the most memorable for Coach Baldwin and his team. As the team lost more games during this season than any other before; this was the year of the fighting Hornet. While stinging powerful Westchester, Ulster, Brandywine, Monroe, and previously unbeaten North Country with losses. The hornets were plagued with a pair of losses against quick New York City CC and a trio of three losses to powerful Niagara CC; which included the defeat received in the Regional championship. As the frontiermen’s coach said of beating the Hornet's three times; “it’s just unbelievable.” The Hor- net’s captain and leading scorer was Lee Stru- beck. With his eighteen points per game average and his habit of listening in on the opponent's strategy meetings during a game was enough to drive any coach to respect this athlete. Strubeck represented Broome on the Regional All Star team and also received an All American Honor- able Mention. Other seniors who dominated the Hornet scoring play were Kurt Storm and Bil! Kenville. Rounding out the starting five were freshmen Ollie Savage and Sonny Gooden. Broome’s strong bench was represented by freshmen “Blue” Tomesheski, Steve Keane, Don Barvinchak and Glenn Hampton. Without the enthusiasm and color exhibited by the other players as “Streaking” Joe Dundon, “Big Bird” Steve Hemenway, “Radar” Mark Wrigley, and “Super Spy” Ken Thompson; the season would have never succeeded. first row, (left to right): Coach Richard Baidwin, Ken Thompson, Lee Strubeck, Steve Keane, “Blue’’ Tomesheski, Assistant Coach Jim Caverly. second row: Bill Kenville, Mark Wrigley, Joe Dundon, Steve Hemenway, Ollie Savage. third row: Kurt Storm, Glenn Hampton, John Bowen, Sonny Gooden, Don Barvinchak, manager Chris McMahon. The newly formed team was coached by Wes Van Dunk of the counseling center. The team captain Teri Mill- er led the girls in scoring followed by Sue Sergott, Renée Quick and Linda Stockbridge. It’s hard to consider a year with only one loss in dual meet competition, a second place team finish in the region, and one of their players reaching the nationals a disappointing season. But with the Broome’s reputation of being the top tennis school in region and the great accumulation of consecutive wins in dual meet com- petition was bound to be challenged. The problems that fell on this year’s team were of a great assortment. The first blow occurred when a conflict between, number two man, Scott Smith and Coach Winters resulted with Smith leaving the team. The loss of number one man Bob Rosics during mid-season due to injury challenged the freshmen contingent of this team. Then the squeaker against powerful Mohawk Valley plus an 8-1 pounding from the Colgate Frosh broke Broome’s winning streak. These were only a few matters that pressured this team. Overall Bob Rosics fought off his injury to win the regional single championships only to lose again as last year to the number one seed in the nationals. A very encouraging note was the play of freshmen Doug Jones during the season. The team went on to win in the sub- regionals at Erie North but was surprisingly dethroned by Mohawk Valley here in the finals. Joe Wasielewski, Nick Santacroce, Mark Humphries, and Ed Matyas must be cited for their steady play. With only two of this year’s squad graduating; the team will be definitely strong again next year. Although the tearn was composed mainiy of freshmen, there were four re- turnees. The front line was all freshmen and a freshman also took over the job of goalie. Coach Davenport feels defense is the key to a team’s success. 1 wonder where he got that idea from? Anyway, its the truth and hopefully next year the team will im- prove over this year. The leading scorers were Debbie Woodley, Mindy Gaffney and Alice Dohnalek, all of whom depart this year. Mary Williams, captain of the team had an outstanding year as goalie. Her percentage of saves were usually 75% per game. Coach Rossi- ter’s main objective was to teach the girls to work together and over-all, to have fun. This may have accounted for Broome’s only tie game ever. Perhaps the remaining soon to be seniors of the team will win one next year. Solid is the only word to describe the overall team. There were no definite weaknesses in the fielding, hit- ting, or pitching of the team. Hitting consistency, de- fense par excellence, and clutch pitching performances are only some of the basic characteristics of this year’s squad. The Hornet's exhibited a team batting average of .317, which is awesome to opposing pitchers. Leading the batting brigade was Dave Dopp with a total of 19 hits, 12 RBI's, and an average of a stinging .413. Hot on his heels were Dave Kopal with 21 hits, 12 RBI’s, and an average of .368; Mike Donnelly with 17 hits, 12 RBI’s and supporting an average of .309; and Larry Wheelock batting a healthy .376 with 18 hits and 12 RBI's. The supporting cast includes Paul Rappa with 20 hits and an average of .317; Tony Hranek with a .315 average and Pat McManus with a .341 batting average. Paul Rappa was also responsible for stealing 20 bases and leading the club in runs scored. Leading the team in home runs and RBI’s was Tom Welch. The pitching corps were also responsible for the 16-2 win and Joss mark. The pitching staff included the likes of blue chip Cardinal draftee Bill Lobdell, (5-G) (48 strikeouts), Larry Wantuck, (4-0) (45 strikeouts), and Dave Van Woert (3-1) which gave coach Daub a desirable starting staff. The bullpen was an- chored by Gary Gnall and Bruce Stanton. The Hornets swept the Regional Tournament in Jamestown and went to the District Finals only to be upset in the opening game. Mary Williams, Managing Editor 2 1) oO FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK I would like to say thanks to some very special people for helping me see this yearbook through. R. BRUCE MAC GREGOR — for all of the advice and assistance he gave me throughout the year. CAROLINE MAC GREGOR — for her help on the dedication and the cover. (Donating her skirt for the cause) MR. MRS. TONY VLASAK — for taking all of those valuable photos that our Photographers could not SEE to take. HOWARD HERZOG — for all of his enthusiasm and ideas even if we did not use all of them. MR. MRS. BILL CELANO — for being here when we needed you the most; checking correcting our layouts, and coming to our parties. PHYLLIS SNOVER — for all of the Quick-acting, Quick-typing emergencies she helped us through. TO MY STAFF — thanks people without you we would not have been able to have a yearbook — BUT I would still have my sanity. This yearbook was put together by some very hard working people. Without them I can honestly say that there would be no yearbook. Together we were able to cover most of the activities and events that took place on the campus this year. 1 feel that this is the best yearbook Broome Community College has ever had, and I hope that you feel the same way. I also want to wish Mary Jean Williams good luck as Editor-in-Chief of the 1975 CITADEL. I hope that her staff will be as great as mine. Karen L. Hansen Editor-in-Chief 1974 CITADEL Managing Editorship is a tough job on any yearbook staff. I now feel I can take this opportunity along with Karen to thank the various editors, our advisor, and our yearbook representative for a job well done. Mrs. Snover gets a big thank you for all she has had to cope with. The important thank you (outside of Senate and their funding), is to Karen Hansen for a job well done as editor-in-chief of the 1974 Yearbook. She has done an outstanding job of keeping our staff together for such a long period of time. Karen, thank you from the whole staff and me.
