Robert Herrick From The People, Yes The people will live on. The learning and blundering people will live on. They will be tricked and sold and again sold And go back to the nourishing earth for rootholds, The people so peculiar in renewal and comeback You can't laugh off their capacity to take it. The mammoth rests bety -en his cyclonic dramas. The people so often sleepy, weary, enigmatic, is a vast huddle with many units saying: T earn my living. I make enough to get by and it takes all my time. If I had more time I could do more for myself and maybe for others. I could read and study and talk things over and find out about things. It takes time. I wish I had the time. The people is a tragic and comic two-face: hero and hoodlum: phan- tom and gorilla twisting to moan with a gargoyle mouth: They buy me and sell me... it's a game .. . sometime I'll break ele gos Gell Once having marched Over the margins of animal necessity, Over the grim line of sheer subsistence Then man came To the deeper rituals of his bones, To the lights lighter than any bones, To the time for thinking things over, To the dance, the song, the story, Or the hours given over to dreaming, Once having so marched. Between the finite limitations of the five senses and the endless yearnings of man for the beyond the people hold to the humdrum bidding of work and food while reaching out when it comes their way for lights beyond the prison of the five senses, for keepsakes lasting beyond any hunger or death. This reaching is alive. The panderers and liars have violated and smutted it. Yet this reaching is alive yet for lights and keepsakes. The people know the salt of the sea and the strength of the winds lashing the corners of the earth. The people to take the earth as a tomb of rest and a cradle of hope. Who else speaks for the Family of Man? They are in tune and step with constellations of universal law. The people is a polychrome, a spectrum and a prism held in a moving monolith, a console organ of changing themes, a clavilux of color poems wherein the sea offers fog and the fog moves off in rain and the labrador sunset shortens to a nocturne of clear stars serene over the shot spray of northern lights. The steel mill sky is alive. The fire breaks white and zigzag shot on a gun-metal gloaming Man is a long time coming. Man will yet win. Brother may yet line up with brother: This old anvil laughs at many broken hammers. There are men who can't be bought. The fireborn are at home in fire. The stars make no noise. You can't hinder the wind from blowing. Time is a great teacher. Who can live without hope? In the darkness with a great bundle of grief the people march. In the night, and overhead a shovel of stars for keeps, the people march: Where to? what next? Last Friday, the lines were seen between the two Front Street entrances to the cam- pus. The next day, the stu- dents took to the front of the Broome County Courthouse. Despite heavy rains and freez- ing winds, close to one-hun- dred students took part. Of late, there has been discussion as to which would be more effective, a teacher strike or a student boycott. Conversation concerning the two items has been heard everywhere from Titchener lounge to the lines in the cafe- teria at the SUB. The SMC has stated that it feels if a settlement is not reached by October 18, a student boy- cott would be better. A spokesman for the SMC gave the committee's reasons for this position. ''The boycott has been set to begin Octo- ber 17 if a settlement has not been reached. The teachers have said that if the matter is not resolved by October 18, they will strike. This is what would happen if they do strike; Students lose class time. The teachers who do strike would be fined two days pay for each day they are not on duty. The members of the Faculty negotiating team and the officers of the Faculty As- sociation could be fined heavily and imprisoned. However, if enough students do boycott until both parties reach an agreement, the school would have to be closed and therefore, the teachers would not have to strike. So it appears that a student boycott would be the lesser of the two evils. explained the spokesman, October 17, A Day To Be Remembered MobilizationStudents Boycott ‘ee ttend ey, A 10 Show Support me (SNC) a Jason Jason Don McLean Semi-formal FALL WEEKEND es Butch Skeene and Second Edition Fri., Sat., Sun. --Fountains pavilion, J.C, Jason --B.C,C, Student Center Don Oct. 27, 28, 29 McLean--Student Center. The first is to inform the students the paper serves about what is going on around the campus in academic, adininistrative and soc ial circles. Secondly, a school newspaper is used to express the opinions of students about certain weaknesses or strengths.a- certain campus has. This has been referred to as ‘“‘bitching and griping.”’ This newspaper has done its share of bitching and griping for the first seven issues this year. The staff of the FULCRUM had high hopes of receiving many opinions from those in the academie community at BCC. However, compared to the points this paper has brought out in the open, feedback has been heartbreaking. This brings about an interesting term used by many to describe a majority of people who don’t care .. . apathy. Several years ago, most of us went through a period of our lives where apathy was dominant in daily situations. This condition persisted and stayed with us. We are an apathetic society, where most people feel someone else can do the dirty work, just as long as the world is pretty for them. This newspaper is now the product of disconcern. We are without half of the staff we started with. The last issue had no Sports column. (This column pertains to a student activity, not just Basketball.) We filled space the best we could. We turned out eight pages of everything we had. We now send out a plea to the students on campus: If you feel the need to exercise your creative talents, you belong on the FULCRUM staff. If you care about campus life, you should join the staff. We need you desperately. The paper does not take up all of your free time, just a few minutes now and then. Please stop by . . . if you don’t, the voice of the students at BCC could die. 108 Sandra Hawley, Patricia Arnoldine, Samantha West, and Bill Maxian. missing from picture 1. is Karen Hansen. Gary Backus . . . portrayed Cross Country as a sport of determination. The runners of our team run for personal accomplishment and self pride. What on earth happened to our lot of proud runners? We no longer have a cross country team. An original roster of ten has been dwindled down to three. That's what I call team spirit. Ten gutsy and determined runners running their hearts out for the team. However, seven of them turned out not to be so determined after all. What does this say for our school? Not much! Students should be concerned about their personal pride as well as the school's. I say to the three remaining remnants of our dying sport, Bravo! You've got the spirit and ambition to succeed in life. I can only feel a deep regret forthe seven who gave up. As for the coach, Richard Leo, I hope he finds more determined runners, next year... . Sincerely, Wayne Gray cross country Won O, Lost 3 cross country meets The team finally had to disband from lack of a sufficient number of runners. 161 FRONT ROW, L=R: Coach Dick Baldwin, Co-Captain, Greg Baldwin, Co-Captain, Larry Lobacz, Asst. C, Riding Team has done very well this past year considering the fact that they have only been in existence two years as a club and one year as an intercollegiate competitor. Our region consists of 14 schools (Region I) wh ile Region II has over 30 schools, Both are members of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Most of these schools are four year colleges and are from the North-Eastern United States including such schools as Bucks County, Adelphi, U. of Mass., William Paterson, U.S, Military Academy, several SUNY schools, Ithaca College, St. Lawrence Uni- versity, and Bennett College. B. C,C,'s Riding Team has compiled an impressive record while using horses from one stable in the area. These horses do not belong to team members which makes their achievements even greater. L-R: a coach from a competing school, Steve Clark, Nanci Novak, Barb Dobrinski, Nancy Montague, Denise Paukett, and Helen Tainter. 1972-73 Record of the B.C.C. Riding Team First show--St Lawrence University--Grand Champion (First Place) Second show--Bennett College--Third Place Third show--St. Lawrence U, --Third Place Fourth show--Bennett College--Reserve Champion (Second Place) Fifth Show--Lake Erie College--Grand Champion Team members are: Barb Dobrinski, Denise Paukett, and Steve Clark, all freshmen; Car- lene LeBous, James Murray, Helen Tainter, Nanci Novak, and Nancy Montague, seniors. Individual accomplishments in the region are: Steve Clark--highest total points over fences, Nancy Montague- -second highest over fences, and highest overall, Nanci Novak--second highest points on the flat, and Helen Tainter, third highest on the flat. Steve Clark This record gave our team the Reserve Team Championship of Region II and Third Place of all schools in Regions I and II, Four of these team members qualified for the Individual Championships Inter-Regional Ride-offs on May 6 at Eastern States Exposition Grounds in Springfield, Mass. Steve Clark, Helen Tainter, Nanci Novak, and Nancy Montague had to ride-off in divisions of 25-30 riders. There were only seven members of our region qualifying for the championship ride-offs. All four of our team members made the grade which gave our school the greatest representation from our region. Nanci Novak won the Grand Championship in the walk-trot division. Nancy Montague placed as Reserve Grand Champion High Point Rider of the Year. Our team proved their equestrian ability consistently and often under trying circumstances. They have indeed sur- prised many people, both in and out of the horse world. The team also has a new advisor for next year, Mr. Fran Battisi. Anyone interested should see him. Goals are to be sought after until achieved. Achievement is the most rewarding pleasure in life. The greatest pleasure in life is being loved. To be loved is thoughtfulness in life and self. Thoughtfulness is being kind and obeying your instincts. Instincts are inherent and foreseeing of sensitivity. Sensitivity is trustworthiness toward the ambitions of others. Trustworthiness can produce faith without doubt. Faith is the basis of a solid understanding between people. Understanding comes from dedication. Love is being dedicated and promising. Promising love is the hardest thing to do in this world. But the world will prosper with two more people deeply in love.
