THE CITADEL 1965 BROOME TECHNICAL ete COMMUNITY tk COLLEGE Binghamton, New York a | ee A Change comes to The Citadel We live in a world of change—whether at the in- ternational, national or campus level. And change has finally caught up with your yearbook, as this 1965 Citadel has made sev- eral sharp breaks with the past. Most noticeable changes will be found in the faculty and senior sections. In- stead of adding to the al- ready overwhelming num- ber of group pictures necessary in a yearbook, we have switched to indi- vidual pictures of facult in informal, if not candid, poses. We feel this has made the faculty section one of the most interesting portions of the book. The senior pictures have been reduced in size from past presentations and stripped together in a mod- ern treatment. In addition, the arrangements and sizes of the strips have been varied from page to page to eliminate the tendency to- ward monotony. There are other changes too. We have tried to make better use of white space in our layouts. Asaresult you will see pages that are not overcrowded with pictures, giving a more relaxed at- mosphere to the presenta- tion of the 1965 school year. And we think you will find it easier to read and leaf through. We have returned to the use of pictures inside the front and back covers, and for the first time we have used different pictures in- side the two covers instead of repeating the same one twice. Again we think this is a modern and intelligent way to produce a yearbook. We have punctuated the volume of group club pic- tures with pictures of each organization in action, where possible. And we have included a descrip- JTRCNINV tion of the club’s purposes and functions, in an effort to make this a more mean- ingful yearbook. We have introduced the “Vital Statistics of a Col- lege” feature on page 163. The facts and figures of stu- dent enrollment may seem like dull statistics now. But we feel that 20 years from now you will find it inter- esting to recall how many classmates you had and to compare this total with other classes as the college grows. Some of our layouts have ictures close together to alance the additional use of white space. And the lay- outs have been put together with clean lines of design in keeping with the mod- ern treatment that we hope will make this 1965 Citadel a joy to look at five, ten, and twenty-five years from now, as well as the first time you are looking at it. CHAMBERS Dean of the College ghee ahh Dean Chambers (left) with Dean of Students Michael J. Reynolds and President Cecil C. Dean Chambers peers out Tyrrell at the farewell dinner for the two deans, who have left Broome Tech for positions at his window to look over Middlesex County College in New Brunswick, N. J. the campus. 4 FRANK M. CHAMBERS We’re Sorry He Left. . . but We’re Happy for Him On March 10, we were all surprised to learn that our Dean, Dr. Frank M. Chambers, had resigned to become presi- dent of a new two-year community college in New Jersey — Middlesex County College in New Brunswick. His resigna- tion was effective July 1, so he finished out the school year with us. He served Broome Tech with distinction in many capaci- ties since 1957 —first as director of admissions, then as dean of students, and finally as dean of the college. He is a grad- uate of St. Lawrence University, earned his Masters degree at Cornell, and received his doctorate from the University of Florida. He was a Navy man, too, and in fact still is, as he recently rose to the high rank of captain in the Naval Reserve. That is his biographical background. But there is much more to this man than these mere facts. Peggy Telfer, editor of Tech Talk, our campus newspaper, expressed the student viewpoint well in her April 9 editorial, which we reprint below. We agree, and we too shall miss him. A big man in many ways Never lost touch with the students prot ncvener HALL COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Front Row: James Davidge, Chairman Darwin Wales, Dr. Leopold Eckler. Emmons was one of Broome Tech’s youngest old-timers, and he will be missed by all who knew him. And there are many who not only knew him, but who also benefited from his knowledge, as he taught in the college’s Electrical Technology Department since 1947. Yet he was only 41 years old when he died. It happened on Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day. He was putting in a patio in his home when he felt sick. He sat down to rest and finally was sent to the hospital in an ambulance. He died before he ever reached there. Prof. Emmons was a former chairman of the Faculty Association at Broome Tech, and he served the Susquehanna Valley School Board as its president. In PROF. DONALD W. EMMONS (1923 — 1964) fact, he had recently been elected to serve another term on the school board. Among his major accomplishments were helping to raise the salary level of Broome Tech faculty members, as he headed the faculty committee that work- ed with the Broome County Board of Su- pervisors on this thorny problem. He also was president of the Susque- hanna Valley School Board when it had its vast building program in the late 1950’s. So Prof. Emmons was obviously a man associated with success. The College Board of Trustees has es- tablished a scholarship in his name, a fit- ting memorial to a man who did so much for the college and its students. The entire Broome Tech family — students, faculty, trustees and alumni— mourn his sudden passing. FACULTY ADMINISTRATION STAFF resident's Office President Cecil C. Tyrrell Dorothy R. The Broome Tech Hornets failed to win their annual Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament for the first time, when they lost to a powerful Joliet Junior College quintet from Illinois. The undefeated Joliet Wolves made the Hor- nets their 10th consecutive vic- tim by scoring an 85-68 vic- tory in the final. The Hornets handed Brevard College of North Carolina a 73- 56 setback in the first round, after Joliet had beaten Jackson Junior College of Michigan 77- 70. With three teams from dis- tant states, this year’s Christ- mas Classic had the most inter- sectional flavor in the six-year history of the event. Broome Tech President Cecil C. Tyrrell Phil Meagiey tosses in a shot from under the basket against Brevard presents the Christmas Classic trophy to despite the all-out efforts of his opponent to block the shot. Willie was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. . .. but Capture Empire State Conference Title for 6th Time in Last 8 Years Although they lost the Christmas Clas- Sic and the regional tournament, this year’s Hornets came through to capture their sixth Empire State Conference basketball cham- pionship in eight years. They won 15 con- ference games and lost only one. The key triumph was a 62-58 win at Can- ton Tech. It was Canton’s only loss until the Northmen played in the National champion- ships in Hutchinson, Kans., as they went on to take the regional crown. The Hornets were unbeaten in league play until the season finale, when they bowed 66-62 in Binghamton to an Alfred Tech team they had previously beaten at Alfred 81-75. But they did not need this win, as they had already clinched the ESC crown. The Hornets benefitted by a forfeit victory over Onondaga in a game the Onondagans had won 68-66 in overtime. But the Braves had used an ineligible player, which was discovered late in the season. Only the uniforms look like basketball in this unusual action shot during the game against Joliet in the Christ- mas Classic finals. The action looks more like football with a Joliet player the center and Wes Horton of the Hornets the T-formation quarterback. Though he is outjumped, Lou Shaffer gets the ball in this action in the game at Alfred Tech. 87 They Excelled WES HORTON looks tired here after some strenu- ous game action, but he did a fine job for the Hornets and was captain of the bas- ketball team. Wes, a Bingham- tonian, didn’t come to Broome Tech until he was 22, as he decided late in lifetoraddaytoe: nis high school educa- tion. He entered Broome Tech through the Pre- Tech program and did well in class as well as on the court. PHIL MEAG- LEY climaxed a two-year basket- ball career by set- ting a Broome Tech record for scoring, making three All-Star teams, and re- ceiving All- America honor- able mention by the National Junior College ea Athletic Associa- anti ' tion. He scored 1,009 points in his two years with the Hornets to become the first player to score more than 1,000 points. He was named to the Empire State Con- ference and Region 3 Juco All-Star teams and to the all-tournament team in the Broome Tech Christmas Classic—all for the second straight year. A slender six-footer who weighed only 150 pounds, he came to Broome Tech from Oneonta. Bad Finish for Baseball Losses in seven of their last eight games gave the baseball Hornets a poor 6- 10 won-lost record, after they had won five of their first eight. The losses began in the Region 3 Junior College (Juco) tournament, which was held at Broome Tech. The Hornets entered the competition with a three- game winning streak. Smitty batted in eight runs, Halter and pitcher- outfielder Les Rorick seven each, and second baseman Jim Andrews six. Halter had five doubles and two homers to be the extra-base leader. Though his pitching rec- ord was two wins and five losses, Wally Rezucha was named the most valuable player. He completed four starts and was the work- horse of the pitching staff. This was made available, for the first time, by the American Chemical Society, to students at community and junior colleges throughout the country. These students can now become a part of one of the leading scientific societies. The American Chemical Society withalmost100,000members,isthe world’s largest scientific society. Student affiliate members receive “Chemical and Engineer- ing News,” the official news maga- zine of the American Chemical Society and attend technical meet- ings of the Binghamton Section of the American Chemical Society. They also sponsor meetingss on campus with industrial chemists and discuss modern trends in chemistry with leading scientists. Officers: Paul Pickard; Secre- tary-Treasurer; Judy Lenox. BUSINESS CLUB Classic, book purchasing, and coat checking. The money earned from the Christmas Classic is divided between the Club and the Athletic Department. The Club’s money is put in a scholarship fund for students. The money earned from coat checking is used entirely for the expenses of the trip to New York City during spring vacation. Though The Business Club’s main objective is to acquaint members with area business concerns and acquaint these concerns with our business courses at Broome Tech. This is accomplished by inviting guest speakers to our meeting's. Many of the speakers are, themselves, graduates from the business option who are now working at various concerns throughout the Triple Cities area. Throughout the year, the Club’s proj- ects consist of sponsoring the Christmas 132 designed for business students primar- ily, membership is open to all under- graduates. Elliot, Carolyn Day, Jennifer Trudgeon) Membership in the Camera Club has more than doubled in the past year, and its main objective is to provide its members with the means by which they can improve their knowledge of photography. There are two well equipped darkrooms, one for film processing, the other for print making. Members find such materi- als as cameras, film, paper and chemicals readily available. One of the main projects of Camera Club is its Model Nights, held several times during the school year. This teaches the fundamental use of the camera, portrait techniques and lighting arrangements. Camera Club is in the process of completing a backdrop to improve the studio. The College Choir has long had a series of “firsts”? among its traditionss:Oross nized with the philosophy that good music performed well is not only an edu- cational but a recreational experience, this group continually brings to the campus and the community programs of high caliber choral] literature. Rarely in a junior college is there a chorus that performs major works ac- companied by full orchestra. This is not so with the Broome Technical Communi- ty College Choir because of the unique association of this group with musical organizations in the community. Orches- tral accompaniment has been provided when called for in all major choral con- Certs. The highlight of this musical year was the performance of the Hanson’s “Song of Democracy” in concert with the Bing- hamton Youth Symphony during the winter term. The College Choir joins with the Men’s Glee Club for tours to other schools and other colleges, and in conjunction with them, presents the annual Pops Concert on the terrace of the Student Center in May. Commencing rehearsals on the first Tuesday of the school term, the choir rehearses weekly until the final pertormance at the June commencement exercises. Contribut- ing to the campus life and social life, as well as the cultural life of the community, this group of men has achieved a repu- tation for excellence in the performance of literature from all musical periods. The annual spring tour to other col- leges and high schools in New York State has made the reputation of this group well known to students and faculty on a broad geographic scope. Drawing its membership from virtually all curriculums on campus, it provides the opportunity for students of diversi- fied curriculums to get to know each other and to benefit from each other’s personal as well as musical experiences. It is through the efforts of this group that the annual Candlelight Cafe has be- come the social highlight on the campus. Members learn the impor- tance of the search for truth, how to express it clearly and in colorful language and how to defend it from the attacks of others. They learn how to use sound reasoning and how to deal fairly with others. Organized in January, 1965, the society participated in competitive debate tourna- ments at Utica College and at Elmire College, Mr. Charles McGrana- ghan, Thomas Alexan- der, John Edgecombe, Gleason Snashall. in practice debates with novice debators from Harpur College and in intra-team debates. During the 1965-1966 debating’ season, the society plans to send teams to ten tourn- aments. During the Senior year, the Executive Committee sponsored the King Tech Dance in December, the graduation Din- ner-Dance held a few days before gradua- tion, and it helped the administration with graduation itself. In 1964, the Exec- utive Committee took on a new respon- sibility —the quite successful SUB Open- ing program. It is the over-all responsi- bility of the Committee to see that the class has well-planned, successful social | events. This year the Class of 1965 planned a very successful and very well decorated King Tech Dance. Standing: Myron Sloat—Vice-President, Michael O’Con- nell—President. Headed by . Class President Danny Little, and advised by Mrs. Lehmann, Mr. Ferrari, and Mrs. Bang- ilsdorf, the committee meets once a week with its fifteen members along with the co-ordinator of student activities, Mr. Pufky. The members consist of the five class offic- ers, and ten freshmen who have maintained a 2.0 average, who have not been placed on proba- tion, and who have shown interest in their class and its activities. The Queen of Hearts Dance was a huge suc- cess for the committee as well as for the whole school. With the dance as an example of the capabilities of the Freshman Executive Commit- tee, the Class of 1966 showed that next year should be something to look forward to. ras gear Th Connie Lawrio, Sally Zillic and Betty Miller were among the many who helped to decorate for the Queen of Hearts Dance. It is published by the students, for the students, and is issued semi-monthly. During the 1964-1965 school year, Tech Talk made great strides in achieving the respect of both the students and the adminis- tration. The paper became not only a publica- tion of news events, but also a sounding board of student opinion and campus contro- versy. Three regular columns were featured during the year, “The Tinder Box” by Sergei Naramore, “Lagado” by Michael O’Connell, SSCL LL.
