BROOME TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE Binghamton, N.Y. THE CITADEL — 1963 IN MEMORIAM MR. PAUL F. TITCHENER Former Chairman of Board of Trustees Death came suddenly to Mr. Paul F. Titchener on Feb. 13, when he succumbed to a heart attack. He was chairman of the Board of Trustees of the college from 1946 until 1957. He finally retired from the Board in 1961. Titchener Hall with flag flying at half mast on Feb. 14, the day after Mr. Titchener died. “He leaves behind a community richer because he was a part of it.” — Sun- Bulletin. Mrs. Ruth Graves, a tireless worker as secretary of the Extension Division, died on Nov. 7 after a _ lengthy illness. She had worked at the college for eight years. Perhaps the finest trib- ute paid her came from a fellow staff member who said, “She did the work of three girls.” MRS. If many carry with them something of his affection, that is an additional bonus. This is the philosophy of Professor Clyde E. Chauncey, to whom this 1963 Citadel is dedicated. He has served Broome Tech in many ways ever since the college was begun in 1947. In addition to teaching in the Medical Office Assistant Department, he has been dean of men, acting registrar, coordinator of student activities, ad- visor to the Student Council and assistant to the dean in charge of making teaching schedules. He has also been chair- man of the graduation committee for fifteen years. Prior to joining the college, Mr. Chauncey taught high school students in the disciplines known as biological science, physics and mathematics. He served as high school principal in three western New York villages, Hemlock, Belmont and Penn Yan. Professor Clyde E. Chauncey One of his early contributions to education was in serving as chairman of a committee which helped establish guidance as a part of the job of New York State high schools. He was self-employed as a building contractor for a short time before returning to my first love, education,” when he joined the staff of Broome Tech when it was first established ie O47 2 He has been known to the staff and students of the college as friend, counselor and professor for 17 years, prior to his plans to retire last June. Chow time for the faculty during orientation. Mr. Kushner, Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Sitterlee, Mr. Emmons are easily identifiable. Who uses that greasy kid stuff? Not President Tyrrell. Mr. Fergus listening to a student’s excuse over coffee 21 “How about more publicity?” Mr. Baldwin, the basketball coach, asks public relations director, Mr. Behr . “How about THAT for a lab specimen?” Actually, Messrs. Milensky, Powers, Hart- man, Meaden and Hickey are heading for a seminar at RPI. A private party or has the Phys. Ed. Department moved its office? Miss Kabanek, Mr. Valentine, Miss Davies and Mr. Baldwin are pictured. 22 T aie Sites Bot eee se et oad eee ee egies SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Ron Sawchuk (treasurer), Aggie Vallone (secretary), Ed Sheredy (president), John Barnes (vice-president). Time for Another Adjustment for Seniors Seniors find themselves in a unique position during their final year of college. They feel they are the important people on campus, and in many instances they are. They are the experienced students who have been through the mill of classes and co-curricular activities. They have made the transition from high school to college. But they are on the threshold of having to make another transition. Many of them are about to leave the college life for the world of business. They will have to make new adjustments, because they will again be the freshmen of the economic campus. How quickly and how well they make this adjustment will have much to do with how happy and prosperous a life they lead. 24 BUSINESS Richard L. Allen Connie T. Amedeo Peter J. Andel Lewis J. They mowed down regional competition with little difficulty, yet they found the going rougher on the national Junior College level. They rolled to four easy victories at the start of the season, and then ran up against Paris Junior College of Texas. The Hornets won a one-point squeaker 66-65. This was a real thril- ler and gave an early demonstration of the tendency for teams outside Re- gion III to provide the best contests. The Paris contest was followed by another one pointer when the Cornell freshmen invaded the Hornets’ Nest. The Big Red Frosh ended the Hor- nets’ five game winning streak 54-53. Although they lost this contest, the Hornets revealed that their defense would be a valuable part of their game. Bob Finkler was particularly outstanding in defense throughout the season. The °62-’63 Hornets won their fourth straight Christmas Classic, a tourna- ment they host. They defeated Dutch- ess, of Poughkeepsie 65-44 in the first round and outlasted a tall St. Leo’s team from Florida 59-52 in the finals. Alfred Tech did not seem to realize that regional teams were pushovers for Broome Tech, as they trounced the visiting Hornets 63-55 on January 11. This was the only conference game lost by the Hornets and they avenged it at the start of Broome Tech Winter Weekend (Feb. 1) when they defeated Alfred Tech 66-42 and went on to take the title. For the most part, the road trips were a big reason for the Hornets’ success. 115 Jim Hotchkiss drives in for a lay-up. It was probably the most significant factor in their winning the Empire State Conference crown. A championship is never decided by one game, but it was evident to almost everyone that there was little left to stop the Hornets when they traveled to Canton (the 2nd place finisher) and won 56-53. The Hornets won their sixth Region III JUCO Tournament and the right to go to Hutchinson, Kans., for the Nationals. They did this easily, de- feating Hudson in the finals 76-45. Charlie Georgia, the team’s leading scorer all year, averaged 22.3 points a game for the tournament. In addition to this, he snared many rebounds and played a fine all-round game. It was little wonder he was Most Valuable Player for the tourney. In the Nationals the Hornets were beated in the first round by Wilmington of North Carolina in triple overtime 83-79. This heart-breaking loss took the fight out of such gutty competitors as John Remza and Bob Finkler. After being eliminated, the Hornets were allowed to re-enter the tournament because of a mixup in eligi- bility on another team. Broome Tech finished 11th in the tournament. The Hornets finished the season with an over-all record of 24-8. This makes coach Dick Baldwin’s over-all record a tremendous 335 wins and 92 losses. The Hornets’ main strengths were defense, balanced scoring, and ability to win on the road. There were several players that could have been in- dividual stars but chose to integrate their perform- ances for the good of the team and helped make it a successful season: Charlie Georgia — leading scorer, Bob Finkler — ace on defense and holder of JUCO foul shot record, Jim O’Donovan — fine scoring and rebounding, and John “Moose” Remza — the courageous captain and field general. Joe Hromek leaps for a rebound against Alfred Tech, and he gets the ball away from Ed Doran of visitors. John (Moose) Remza 3rd Team All-America Every successful’ team seems, invariably, to have one player who is looked to as the team leader. He may or may not be the high scorer, but he has to have those inner quali- ties that no amount of practice can produce: a fighting heart, the will to win, and a respect for the unwritten rules of sportsmanship and self-conduct. The Hornet basketball squad was fortunate in having, for the past two seasons, such a star in the person of John “Moose” Remza. John played several games last season with a unique sort of mask (see picture) to protect a broken nose. In the Paris (Texas) game, Moose was knocked unconscious but finished the game on wobbly legs to lead the Hornets to a 66-65 victory. He was top scorer (20) and _ re- bounder (7) for both teams. Remza’s will to win, enhanced by his fine ball handling and outside jump shot, made him the player most responsible for the success of the 1962-1963 Hornets. That is, undoubtedly, the reason he was chosen to the Junior College All-America third team. Even a broken nose didn’t stop John Remza, the Moose, from playing superbly. KNEELING: Mike Leonard (capt.), Howie BEST CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM YET The Hornet harriers, in their four year history, are fielding progressively stronger clubs each season. The '62 season was no exception. The Hornets improved upon their °61 season in which they posted a 5-4 record and a third place in the regionals. This past season saw the best Hornet effort ever with a 7-1 record and a second place in the regionals. The harriers are also improving in the individual statistic department. Bob Walluk set a new school record for the 3.4 mile home course (18:34) and finished second in the regionals with a 16:45 per- formance, that was 18 seconds better than the exist- ing course record. The 1962 captain, Mike Leonard, finished third in the regionals in 1961 for the best Hornet effort up to then. The Hornets were thwarted in their bid for a perfect seas@n and a trip to the National tournament by the perennially strong Cobleskill harriers. Three of the Hornets’ seven wins were perfect scores. They were gained at the expense of Alfred TEAM Hudson Valley C.C. 19-38 Delhi Tech 18-37 Alfred Tech 15-40 Dutchess C. C, 20-43 Mohawk Valley Paul Smith’s 19-45-76 Tech in two dual meets and against Alfred Tech and Erie Tech in a triangular meet. In the last contest with Alfred Tech all seven Broome runners out- distanced the first man for Alfred Tech. The successful season should be attributed to a tre- mendous team effort, as the Hornets literally finished each meet in a swarm. This team effort was due, mainly, to the keen inter-squad competition high- lighted by the contest for top spot between Bob Wal- luk and Phil Adams. Adams was the undisputed number one man early in the season but Walluk made his challenge known about mid-season. Coach Dick Leo, for a while, was undecided as to who the top man really was. He finally gave Walluk the nod, as Bob streaked across the finish line in a driving rain Oct. 23 for a new school record. As we congratulate Coach Leo and all the harriers for their terrific job in 1962, let us keep an eye on the 63 season. Only Captain Mike Leonard and Howie Merriam graduated. OCTOBER SLUMP SPOILS SOCCER SEASON Had the Hornet booters of coach Rene Valentine paid attention to pre-season predictions they would never had suited up. Local sports writers had the team tabbed for failure, almost before the first prac- tice. Lack of experience (only three lettermen re- turned) and early injuries were the main reasons for the pessimism. The booters, however, wound up with a 7-5 record, an invitation to the regional tourna- ment, and two players cited for Junior College all- star honors. The warm-up game with the alumni, which the var- sity pulled out 3-2, seemed to lend force to the glum predictions. But the Hornets improved vastly and ran up a 7-1 record by October 13, losing only to a very strong Cornell freshman team. But October 16 until October 27 was the period of disaster. In four games the Hornets suffered four defeats. They played 14 consecutive scoreless quarters and their dreams for top-ranking in the region came to a crashing end. The principal reasons for the slump were injuries at key positions. Two outstanding wings, Jim Snape and Steve Kacmar, were injured. Lady Luck may also be blamed. Many seemingly golden scoring opportunities went by the boards because of such things as wind, slippery turf or lucky saves. The Hornets ended their season on a high note, as they defeated Mohawk Valley 1-0 in a rugged de- fensive game. But they declined the invitation to the regional tournament because their record was not outstanding enough. Two of the big reasons for the booters’ success was the record breaking scoring of Bill Skojec and the brilliant defensive work of fullback Roger DuBois and goalie Ray Van Ness. DuBois was named to the All-American second team chosen by the National Junior College Athletic Association and Skojec re- ceived regional honors. BASEBALL TEAM WINS 10, LOSES 5 Because the Region III championship tournament was rained out, the 1963 baseball Hornets were de- prived of a seemingly excellent opportunity of win- ning their third straight regional title. The Hornets compiled a 10-5 record over the season. The big story on the ’63 baseball picture was the three catchers and their versatility. Confronted with a pitching problem at the beginning of the season, coach Rene Valentine was forced to use his third- string catcher, John Phelps, for pitching duty against Keystone Junior College in the third game of the season. John responded with a one-hit shutout and went on to a 5-1 record. He also had a string of 37 con- secutive scoreless innings in which he struck out 40 and allowed only 17 hits. Not only did the catching staff bolster a weakness in pitching, but the team’s hitting was strengthened when coach Valentine decided to use both of his other two catchers, Joe Toner and Dave Lewis, in the batting order. The two alternated behind the plate and in left field to add punch to the lineup that would otherwise have been lacking. Joe, the first string catcher, was top batsman for the Hornets with a .353 average, while Dave Lewis was not far behind with a .341 average. Hitting was a big factor in the successful season and coach Valentine said it was one of thé better bal- anced hitting teams that he has coached. The team hit at a .256 clip and no hitter in the lineup could be considered a “cousin” for opposing pitchers. Speed also was important as the Hornets stole 35 bases led by senior Ken Moses’ 12. Ken was given an honorable mention to the National Junior College All-American Team. It was a season marred by rain, postponements and cancellations topped off by the cancellation of the Region III tournament. But it was a good season thanks to the efforts of the Hornets, who played in the fine tradition of Broome Tech and their coach, highly esteemed Rene Valentine.
