BROOME TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE BINGHAMTON, N. Y. emouwmmn Jacquelyn Williams Diane Stack In September of 1960, Diane Stack, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stack of Binghamton, New York, and Jackie Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Williams of Sunrise Terrace, Binghamton, began their freshman year at Broome Technical Community College as Medical Office Assistants. Jackie, at the end of her second semester, left Broome Tech and found employment at the Binghamton State Hospital. Diane continued her studies and would have been a senior this year. On August 21, 1961, both Diane and Jackie were killed instantly in an automo- bile accident. They will always be a permanent part of Broome Tech and will live on affectionately in the memories of all of the students and faculty who knew them. no Titchener Hall In September of 1947, Broome Tech opened its doors as New York State In- stitute of Applied Arts and Sciences at Binghamton. Before that time a small group of local citizens labored long and hard to make it a reality. One of this group was Paul F. Titchener. In recogni- tion of all his many services to the Col- lege, the Board of Trustees voted to name the new building in his honor. We, the staff of the 1962 CITADEL wish to add to that recognition by dedicating this, our yearbook to him. ae Dedication STANDING: J. Bruce Buckler, Robert F. Kelly, James M. Davidge. As the child passes from adolescence to maturity and assumes an even greater burden of responsibility, so Broome Technical Community College finds itself in a state of transition. It is faced with unique and complex situations which are a part of the maturing process. Inherent in this process is an increasing awareness of the intrinsic relationship between the academic community and the community at large. We, at Broome Tech, have been extremely fortu- nate in finding vigorous support and encouragement from the citizens of the Triple Cities and the South- b) STANDING: Darwin R._ Wales, James M. The nine civic leaders entrusted with the responsibility of guiding and directing the College typify the dynamic interest and cooperation which have meant so much in the growth and development of Broome Tech. They have given generously of their time and energy to help solve the problems and an- swer the needs of growth and expansion of our school. These men and women have, by their tireless efforts, endeared themselves to all of us here at the College. oN eke Fee We ae 7 Lat as 3, Jeastesote Cecil : State University of New York Broome County Board of Supervisors College Committee Our Sponsors Dr. Thomas H. Wilson, President The Circle K Club is a service organization for college men operating on the campus and in the community in the same manner as Kiwanis and other service clubs. It is a leadership and character-building group which serves both the campus and the community. As in Kiwanis, the Circle K motto is “We Build” — building for justice, liberty, democracy, and a better world in which to live. The Circle K Club is not merely an organization but a driving force, a developing of leadership for tomorrow while it creates a better college or university community today. The Broome Tech chapter of Circle K International is sponsored by the Chen- ango Valley Kiwanis club. With the guidance that Kiwanis has given us, we have been able to be one of the most active clubs on campus. This year the club has helped work on Orientation of the Freshman Class, sponsored the United Fund program, published a Student Directory, co-sponsored the Sadie Hawkins dance, acted as guides for various groups on campus, built an ice skating rink on campus, worked at various dances, sponsored a “Car Smash” at Spring Weekend, were ush- ers at Graduation, sponsored various inter-clubs during the year, acted as a booster club at basketball games, and the most important project of all has been the spon- soring of dances each month for the patients at State Hospital. The Broome Tech Circle K Club has been recognized as “The most outstanding Circle K Club in New York State,” according to the New York State Newsletter. Circle K would like to thank the student body and the community for the op- portunity of “Serving You.” 106 STANDING: Gerry Jones, Nicolas Mesley, Paul Harrington SEATED: Georgian Stolarcyzk, Betty Rounds, Elaine Cleaveland, Bonnie Short. Drama Club This, their second year of organization, was a year of firsts for Dramatics Club. Beginning the year with a new name — The Teasers and Tormentors — they in- augurated a series of full length feature films shown on campus under the title of “Friday Night Films.” “Come Fill the Cup,” presented at a Convocation of the Student Body was the school’s first student dramatic production, “Finian’s Rain- bow,” a College Community musical listed over twenty Club members in its cast and crew. A chapter of Delta Psi Omega, National Dramatics Honorary Fraternity was established with twenty-one students qualifying for membership. Plans for the coming year include another “Friday Night Films” series; informal work shops in dramatics, stage craft, and make-up; and a major three-act student production. WU The purpose of the Business Club is “to acquaint ourselves with area business concerns and to acquaint these concerns with the business courses at Broome Tech- nical Community College.” This purpose leads the members to the path of success by active participation in activities which are aimed to benefit the college and the community. These activities include: sponsorship of Friday night pizza parties, book sale, checking concession at basketball games, souvenir stand for Science Fair, and din- ner meetings throughout the year. In addition the club sponsored the JUCO Tour- nament, and the proceeds from the tournament were used for two full scholarships — an athletic one and a general one to read “from the Business Club and the Tri- Cities Noma.” The funds raised by the checking concession were used to underwrite the New York City field trip on March 14—17. And the results were pretty much the same — an enviable 24—6 record, the Region 3 Juco title, and a trip to the Nationals in Kansas, a third straight Christmas Classic crown and second place in the Empire State Conference. Faced with a woeful lacke of experience, size, and speed, this year’s Hornets suc- cessfully adopted a complete new basketball philosophy the slowdown and the semi- freeze. Spurning the fast break, running the interminable shuffle, looking only for the percentage shot, and “‘sitting’’ on the ball with a tantalizing freeze when out in front, the Baldwinmen not only won cliffhanger after cliffhanger but also wound up statistically as the top defensive Juco quintet in the land by limiting opponents to an average of 52.6 points per game. Captain Roger Terry and John Remza sparked the scorers, each with a 14 point per game average, while seniors Jim Harding and Wayne Kenner in spite of little previous collegiate experience — took over the play-making and defensive chores. Jim O'Donovan, Bob Finkler, and Loren Puterbaugh — all Freshmen — also con- tributed heavily to the team’s success. Remza was named to the Empire State Con- ference and the Region 3 All-Star team while Terry received the Athletic Board of Control’s MVP trophy. 120 Honorary “Electricals” — Honored Hornets! With only Captain Ed Gillen back, this year’s golf squad had trouble getting off the ground and matching the lofty heights of its three immediate predecessors. As a matter of fact, only two forfeit wins over Auburn Community College made a winning 5—4 season record possible. Furthermore, the best the squad could do was sixth place in the Region 3 meet at Auburn although freshman Ron Maja, this season’s top winner with a 5—4 mark finished tenth among the individual players. The Athletic Board of control MVP trophy for golf was awarded to Ed Gillen. Cross Country For the first time in its three year history, the Var- sity Cross Country team came up with a winner, de- feating 6 opponents while losing to four. Further- more, Coach Dick Leo’s Harriers finished third — their highest yet — in the Region 3 JUCO meet at Mohawk Valley. Freshman Mike Leonard was the bellwether, gar- nering three “firsts” and four “seconds” as he placed his teammates in eight dual and one triangular meet. Leonard was named the squad’s MVP by the Ath- letic Board of Control. FRONT ROW: J. Glenn, R. Bird, D. Hines, M. Leon- ard. BACK ROW: Coach R. Leo, J. Scanks, W. The Hornets, however put up an excellent show- ing against tough competition in the tourney, losing to Dean Junior College 2—1 and then losing the consolation round to Long Island 3—2. The Hornets were not beaten on their home field this season. One of the out- standing achievements was defeating Orange County Colts at Broome 3—2, thus breaking an Orange string of 28 consecutive wins over a four year period. Top scorer for the season was Dale Millspaugh, co-captain, who was named to the New York State First Team and awarded the Athletic Board of Control MVP trophy. Honors also went to senior Bob Sokolinsky, who was named to the First Team All New York State plus Second Team All American. lr: V5 Mee 8 _ an te i OU pt a FRONT ROW: Coach R. Valentine, W. After a glow start (2—4 record) the team caught fire and won 9 straight games, then lost the last 2, thus posting an 11—6 mark for the season. The team was invited to and participated in the Region 3 Baseball Tourney in Buffalo and came out Region 3 champs for the second year in a row. Broome beat Bryant Stratton 9—3 and Hudson Valley 6—1 to take the title. Honors were bestowed on Seniors Don Heller and Roger Terry and freshman Ken Moses as members of the All District Team (Regions 3 and 15). Don Heller (pitcher, third base- man, first baseman) was named MVP by the Athletic Board of Control for the 1963 season. Pitcher Bob Bromley posted the best mound record with 5 wins and three losses. Top hitting honors went to centerfielder Ken Moses with a .393 batting average. Close behind were Rog Terry with .327 and Don Heller with .317. The team ended up with a .259 batting record.
