bl DhUOME Technical Gomis College : Binghamton, New York DIED KGAWa@ Nie JAMES E. McVEAN... . Counsellor .. . Administrator . . . Friend Teacher. . Dean McVean joined our faculty in 1948 as an instructor in the Electrical Technology Department. In 1953, he assumed duties as Director of Admissions and Extension, and two years later was appointed Dean of Faculty. This year, the faculty and students of Broome Tech received with mixed emotions the news that “Jim’’ McVean had been appointed Director of Roanoke Technical Institute in Roanoke, Virginia. During the 12 years that Dean McVean served on the staff of Tech, he endeared himself to both the College and the Community in countless ways. We are indebted to him for the contributions he has made in the development of Broome Tech. Though saddened at the thought of losing our dean, we are nevertheless pleased to see him receive the recognition he so well deserves. We know that under his leadership, Roanoke Tech will attain the same fine standing as Broome Tech in the growing family of Junior Colleges. To James E. McVean, we, the staff of the 1961 CITADEL, respectfully dedicate this book. Good luck and success always! US BACK: Connie Rapp, Carol Hotaling, Diane Ostrowsky. FRONT: Alice Srnka, Rodger Page. WYNETTE GREGG Behind the scenes of every successful stage production is a group of directors, producers, technicians, “angels” that the audience never sees — rarely hears of. But these people, sometimes even more than the actors, are responsible for the success of the production. Behind the scenes of Broome Technical Community College, we find such a group. Their capability can be measured in the continued growth and success of our college. We tne staff of the 1961 CITADEL wish now to publicly thank these, our “angels.” Dr. Thomas H. This year, under the able leadership of Mr. Charles M. Greene, was certainly an outstanding one. Among its accomplishments were well received appearances before several local school and civic groups, and concerts at Eric Tech and the statewide CISGA conference at Troy, N. Y. Who among us will forget the community-wide produc- tion of The Messiah or the tremendous and sincere ovation at commencement exercises? The College Choir, apart from Broome’s athletic groups, has perhaps done more to promote good community relations than any other campus organization. It is a group of which we all can be proud. 42 yy AUT a SS aS sesctosiominiincelcametaoa See EE EES accion OURAN RoRURO EAE wih hn OM SE sion. stirneosnmaaenne es 43 CIRCLE “K”’ ARCHERY CLUB Sieees sinners. _narsontes Mi Semen. ae STUDENT CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION STUDENT WIVES’ CLUB This yearbook would not be complete without pictures of Binghamton General Hospital Student Nurses, whose lab science courses were held on our campus. U. C. O. CHAMPIONS On the record, the 1960-61 Broome Tech basketball team must be rated the best in the college’s 14 year history. The Hornets reeled off 30 straight victories before being de-winged in Kansas in their last 2 games: 69—64 by the 1961 national champs, Pueblo, and 75—73 by the 1960 national champs, Parsons. In the process, Broome became the first Eastern team ever to be ranked Number 1 in the weekly national JUCO poll. Furthermore the Hornets won their second Christ- mas Classic title, their fifth Eastern States crown, and their sixth Empire State Conference championship, this time with a 10O—O mark. 48 Other historical highlights were the 73—64 conquest of N.Y. City Tech in the first live basketball game ever telecast locally and the naming of Captain Bob Wil- liams to the Junior College All-American first team and JUCO_ All-Tournament team. Statistically, too, this Hornet team was supreme: Heller set a new individual season scoring mark with 644 points, Williams a new assists standard with 163, big George Zurenda a new season rebound tally of 425, and Lyle Bensen a single game rebound total, 31. Perhaps most significant of all, however, was the record 18,656 fans the Hornets attracted in 20 home games. Jan Florisha was the 60-61 chairman. 51 1961 EASTERN STATES JUCO CHAMPIONS Between the snow and rain storms, the baseball team managed to get in a winning season this past spring. With five cancellations due to weather, the team posted a 6—4 record. Top hitting honors went to freshman Bob Bromley, who ended up with a .417 average in 10 games. The pitch- ing duties were held up well by veterans Wendy Terry and Al Gillis. Tech hosted its first JUCO Baseball Tournament this spring and was able to take the Region XV Champion- ship. Broome beat Mohawk 8—2 in the first game and Erie 2—1 in the second, to take the title in the three team tourney. Wendy Terry was named to the 1961 J.C. All-American roster for the second year, this time named to the third team list. Final Statistics: Games — 10; At bat — 290; Hits — 69; Batting % — .238; Runs — 49; Assists —89; Errors — 29; and Stolen Bases — 30. 52 GOLF TEAM Co-Captain Co-Captain Judy Holcomb Dolores Paula Miller Ann Shields Pat Renda @uedele last day « Who’s doing all the work THE CECIL C.
