Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1960 volume:

In recent years, Brome Tech has become synonomous with progress. A new cam- pus, better facilities and an enlarged faculty are but a few examples of this prog- ress. This year, in recognition of the latest significant aspect of our progress, we dedicate the 1960 yearbook to the first graduates of the Engineering Physics curri- culum. Being a pilot group, they have been the object of much experimentation, specula- tion and perhaps disappointment; the same is true of almost any new idea. But we believe that the first trial has proved fruitful both to students and instructors. The experience gained through this venture will enable the Engineering Physics depart- ment to gear future academic programs more closely to student needs and thereby to ease their transition from a two-year to a four-year college. Congratulations, then to these select seniors. We hope their stay at Broome Tech has been happy and profitable and that it will benefit them as they strive toward success in other schools, industry, and the world at large. Tyrrell President This year with the graduation of its first class in the curriculum in Engineering Physics, Broome Tech takes one more step toward serving all of the people of the community. As the pressure of increasing num- bers of young people desiring a college education grows, it is important that the College provide a program to meet a wide variety of interests and needs. This it plans to do. Its ability to meet these needs adequately depends upon its being provided with the buildings, equipment, and staff necessary to do the job. By increasing the scope of its program while striv- ing for and insisting upon excellence in its quality, the College will fulfill its obligation to the people it serves as a true Community College. This first class in Engineering Physics is an outstanding example of this growth of the program and of numbers. Miss Dorothy Turner Secretary to the President James E. All too often a young job seeker forgets there is a big YOU in opportunity. Yet the YOU factor is most important of all in determining how fast a man will progress, or how far he will go. There are no set rules that will automatically guarantee success. There are, however, a few basics that seem to work for people with a strong YOU factor: YOU are dependable, and YOU do your job well. YOU get along well with others. YOU are anxious to ac- quire additional knowledge, and YOU are not afraid to accept responsibility. YOU recognize the importance of your job, and YOU look for ways to improve it. YOU are receptive to constructive criticism. Many additional characteristics, of course, can be added to this list. These are sufficient, however, to illus- Scintilla Division Sidney, New York trate the importance of the YOU factor. In every company there are many ways to approach the top, but the traffic is heavy on the way up. In order to pass the others, YOU must first surpass. If YOU have drive and determination, plus the other YOU factors an employer looks for when promotions are being consid- ered, your qualifications will not be overlooked. Scintilla, a growing company that has more than doubled its employment during the past ten years, pro- vides considerable opportunity for people anxious to get ahead. We make it a practice to help — with in-plant training programs, educational assistance, and personnel appraisals — but it is up to our employees to make the most of these opportunities. Proof that they do is well illustrated by the fact that in our Engineering Department alone a total of 73 promo- tions were announced during 1959. In Jan. 1960, Bill Woodworth, Mo Hamilton, John Shea, and Jack Chyle were selected on the All New York State Jr. College Soccer Team. At the same time, Phil Hoagland was selected on the Second Team Jr. College All- American Soccer Team. All in all, Broome’s first soccer team was a successful one. An opening victory over Griffiss Air Force Base, 20—1, got the Hornets off to a fine start, as Wendy Terry pitched a 1-hitter. They continued their hot pace with a convincing 15—3 victory over Mohawk Tech, paced by Butch Mariani’s four hits. Their next game was a real challenge as Oneonta State was the opposition. Broome baseballers had never beaten the powerful State school. Backing up Terry’s 3-hitter, the Hornets put together 17 hits, led by Mariani’s 3 hits, Kenney’s 3 hits, Sedlak’s 2 hits, Woodworth’s 2 hits, and O’Hara’s 2 hits, they proceeded to trounce Oneonta by a score of 15—2. Now the Hornets were riding high. After a double win over Keystone Junior College and a return victory over Griffiss, the Hornets met their match. Into town came the Cobleskill Aggies. After 7 innings of battle, the Aggies eked out a 6—4 victory. However, the Hornets never gave up, as they came back to win their next two games with double victories over Delhi by scores of 3—2 and 11—2. In the first Delhi game Al Gillis twirled a 3-hitter. Next came a 5—2 victory over visiting New York City Tech, as Al Gillis controlled the game with his pitching and Lew Grubham had 2 hits. The season was almost completed, with one game left. A return game with Mohawk. It had rained the week of the game so the Hornets were without practice. This proved to be very costly as Mohawk squeezed by Broome in ten innings, 3—2. Leading hitter for the Hor- nets was John Sedlak, with an average of .412, followed closely by Butch Mariani and Wendy Terry. Leading the pitching staff was freshman Al Gillis with a record of 4—0, and Wendy Terry 7—2. Elected Captain for the 1960 team was senior-catcher Gary Pritchard. Basketball Resume °59-’60 Add four eager and talented freshmen to four experienced and talented seniors, throw in a dash of scholar platoon, integrate well, and the result is one of the finest of Hornet basket- ball squads. In the course of compiling a 28—3 record, the 1959-60 Broome Tech hoopsters for the second time in three years were crowned co-champs of the Empire State Conference and swept to the Eastern Regional Juco title and a trip to the Nationals in Hutchinson, Kansas. Starting slowly, the Baldwinmen finally subdued a stubborn Alumni five 61—56 as Wendy Terry and Bob Williams came off the bench to chuck in 20 and 13 points respectively. After that came easy wins over Griffis, Cobleskill, Dutchess Community College and Baptist Bible Seminary. All Hornetsville awaited the invasion of powerful intersectional foe Tyler (Texas) Junior College. But the Hornets were ready. Broome Tech wheeled to a 39—21 lead, then eased home, 78—53. Six-foot, six-inch George Zurenda not only dominated the rebounding in this one but also led all scorers with 19. Wendy Terry had 18. Conference wins over Mohawk and Hudson Valley kept the Black and Gold undefeated as they prepped for the first annual Zmas Classic. In a tense final before a jam-packed house, the Hornets overcame a 34—32 halftime deficit to beat Joliet (Ill.) Junior College. After a 87—-38 win over previously unbeaten Orange County Community College, it was evident that the defense — now an aggressive man for man, now the famed Mambo — was stealing the show. Everyone awaited the appearance of all-winning arch villain Alfred Tech. A bristling first half found Broome trailing 37—38. Then almost magically, the deficit disappeared and to the approving roar of the home crowd the Hornets were out in front by an unbelievable 92—63 score. Stunned Alfredites asked, ““What happened?” The answer was predominately Dick Kenney and Lyle Bensen. Kenney exploded with a 20 point second half, while Bensen raked both boards and wheeled in 17 timely markers. Win No. 15 was a big one — over Erie Tech in Buffalo for the first time, 74-65. Then came the first century total of the season as Broome beat Mohawk for the 26th consecutive time, 111—59. How long could the streak last? Alfred Tech had that answer. Leading at half-time 29— 28, they gradually moved out in front and the 17-game string was down the drain 77—57. Then came a fantastic last second 71—70 conquest of the touted St. Bonaventure Frosh. Down 3 points with 7 seconds to go, the Hornets got a lift when Lyle Bensen tipped in a re- bound; an intentional and immediate back court foul killed the clock. A missed one and one held ball quickly followed. Alert Bob Williams pilfered the jump ball and immediately called time. With 4 seconds remaining, still 1 point down, the Hornets regrouped after a tense hud- dle to set up a play. It apparently worked. Wendy Terry took a hand off from Dick Kenney, 89 1959 Champions 1959 Team fired a line drive jump shot from the corner; the ball hit the rim and bounced high in the air, the final horn sounded; the ball nestled into the cords. The crowd exploded on to the court and raised Terry high. Clutch wins over Paul Smith’s (102—40!) and Canton Tech (61—50) clinched a share of the Conference title and were followed by a 68—49 victory over the Cornell Frosh. The Hornets entered the Eastern Regional playoffs on their home floor a solid favorite. In a bitterly contested first round game, the Black and Gold beat City Tech 63—47. Dan- gerous Canton Tech was the second round foe which the Hornets eased by, 93—53. The final was a natural. Nearly 1600 fans squeezed into every vacant inch of space to see the home towners meet the dark horse favorite, Potomac State, but the Hornets refused to let the Raiders handle the ball and with clever Bobby Williams flipping in his first six shots the game was over almost before it started 8359. Broome Tech for the third time was on the way to Kansas — this time, many observers felt, with its best team ever. The opener, though, was another heartbreaker. With 3 min- utes to go, the score was tied at 57 all. Then Parsons (Kansas) Junior College — the even- tual tourney winner — broke through with a 3 pointer play and went on to win 62—59, but not before Dick Kenney had given one of his greatest performances, rebounding both boards against much taller foes and throwing in 27 points. 90 Tech Tone Masters President — Robert Nelson Vice President — Donald Schmidt Sec.-Treas. — Darrell Emery Accompanist — Jack Lake =e Sa ee Park Geel An een I 18144, Ad8ag — Aie19192S yong uayjq — ysluedwiossy = opey aq pely — “43 ‘sng yAe|D Jouer — UeLeIGI] = YUUWIS Wel]! — Wsplsotd IUIAID) sajseYD) — 1019941 HOYD Ida]|OD 24] — snzoyo azouz 2u0 jseoe F “ULYY ‘raddns ino JO} SUIS 9M President — John Boburka Vice President — Les Hildabrand ALMA MATER William Spring, 61 In our valley known so well Stands our Alma Mater.
