This year we look ahead to the next decade and dedicate the 1959 yearbook to the students who will succeed us and to the bright promise which is theirs. During these years the Class of 1959, as loyal alumni, will watch with pride the growth of the College. What can we foresee in the next ten years? Cer- tainly, a tremendous increase in the number of students. Necessarily, new curriculums such as graphic arts and nursing education to meet the needs of the greater number of students and of the community. Obviously, a growing campus with a General Education-Mathematics-Physics Building, a Business Education Building, dormitories, and expanded athletic facilities. Symbolic of the an- ticipated growth and maturity of the College are the young saplings, which now, standing with the aid of supports, will then be strong, thriving, heav- ily foliaged trees. As prospective alumni, we pledge ourselves to join with the students, faculty and the community to make this dream come true. SEATED: Marlene Swimelar, Secretary; Daniel Meddleton, Treasurer. Leading the group of returning lettermen were Bill Cough- lin, Kevin McCane, Ron Avery and Bill Klish. Practice sessions were begun at an earlier date than ever before in an effort to get the new players and returning lettermen functioning as a smooth unit at the earliest date possible. The season began wih a nip-and-tuck victory over a tough Alumni aggregation with the final score being 4945. Kevin McCane paced all scorers with 16 points. Following the alumni game came the task of preparing for Alfred Tech, last year’s co-champion with the Hornets in the Empire State Basketball Conference. Alfred Tech came to town sporting an all-star array from western New York State and the Hornets stung them into submission for the first time that season by the score of 61—54. Big Bob Garbade was the kingpin of the victory with 16 points which were scored in approxiamtely 16 minutes of action. The Black and Gold warriors extended the winning streak to three with an easy victory over Orange County Community College by the score of 74—63, with Mike Moran being the big gun with 22 markers. The Hornets first defeat came at the hands of a strong Cornell Univer- sity Freshman aggregation by the score of 58—52. At one point in the first half, Broome Tech was leading by a score of 18—8, but Cornell’s superior size eventually took its toll. Kevin McCane had an excellent shooting night, scoring 22 of the Hornet’s 52 points. An early season highlight was the Broome Tech Holiday Festival doubleheaders. This was the first in what is hoped to be a long series of Holiday Festivals to be held in the Upper Front Street gym. To inaugurate the series, three topflight teams were invited. In the first round of doubleheaders Erie Tech of Buffalo played the high-scoring Joliet (Illinois) Junior College team and Broome Tech took on the fine Westchester Community College squad. In these games Erie Tech was nosed out by the slight margin of three points and Broome Tech just eked out a 67—66 win which saw Westchester getting the last shot and the ball bound- ing on the rim as the buzzer sounded. In the second round of doubleheaders Erie Tech easily defeated Westchester and Joliet continued their winning eastern tour by nipping Broome 75—66. On the whole, the Holiday Festival was considered a great success. Following the loss to Joliet, the Hornets regained their winning ways with two successive victories over Keystone Junior College and Auburn Community College by scores of 79—62 and 74—60, respectively. In playing the third game in a row on the road, the Hornets traveled to Olean to take on the undefeated St. Bonaventure University Freshman team. Although outsized and outmanned, the Techmen put up a tremendous battle before meeting defeat by the score of 71—54. Following the loss to St. Bonas came a four-game winning streak with victories over Key- stone Junior College (73—51), Erie Tech (61—55). Mohawk Valley Tech (89—54) and New York City Tech (58—46). In these games Dick Kenney began rounding into form and steadily increased his average until it reached the double figure point. The return game with Alfred Tech proved disastrous as the Hornets could never become untracked and went down to defeat, 68—55. Following the Alfred Tech loss came another four-game winning streak which saw the Hornets sweep past Hudson Valley Tech, Auburn Community College, Baptist Bible Seminary, and Mohawk Valley Tech and placed them into contention for Con- ference honors. It was with high aspirations that the boys took to the road for games with Canton Tech and Paul Smith’s College only to have these aspirations smashed by scores of 68—58 and 78—69. These defeats at the hands of Canton and Paul Smith’s pushed the Hornets into fifth place in Empire State Conference competition. As if the double defeat on the road was not bad enough. Kevin McCane was placed on social probation at this time which meant that he was ineligible for all remaining games. At that point McCane had been leading the team in scoring with an average of over 12 points per contest. Despite McCane’s loss, Dick Baldwin’s boys managed an easy victory over Cobleskill and once again took to the road to do battle with the villains of Erie Tech. In what was probably the most thrilling game of the year, the Hornets battled the Kats from the beginning to the final buzzer. With thirty seconds remaining in regulation play, the score had the Hornets on top by three points. However, at this point a series of mishaps prevented the Hornets from maintaining their position of advantage and when the final buzzer sounded saw the Kats on top by the score of 61—57. This victory assured Erie Tech a tie for the Conference title and cemented Broome Tech to a lower standing. Once again in 1959 Broome Tech was the host team for the Region XV Junior College Basketball championships. Along with Broome Tech, other teams in the Tournament were: Montgomery Junior College of Maryland; Paul Smith’s College; Canton Tech; New York City Tech; Erie Tech; Alfred Tech; and Delhi Tech. Rising to the occasion, Broome Tech avenged their loss of a week previous and defeated Erie Tech in the first round, 69—62. This placed them in the semifinals along with Paul Smith’s, Alfred and Delhi. In semifinal com- petition, however, the Hornets could not match the superior rebounding of Alfred and were eliminated from the Tournament by the score of 6458. Alfred Tech continued their strong play and on the following night wore down Paul Smith’s determined five and won the trip to the National championships by a 64——59 score. Broome Tech, with a consolation victory over Delhi, finished in third position. The season was concluded on a very high note as the Hornet Five avenged the early season loss to Cornell Freshmen by a 75—-63 score. At one point in the first half the Hornets lead by as much as 18 points. This was a wonderful team effort on the part of the Techmen and the game saw Bob Garbade throw in over 20 points for the first time in the season. Making their final appearance for Broome Tech in that game were Bill Coughlin. Bill Klish. Mike Moran and Ron Avery. With the season ending on this cheerful note. all parties concerned are eagerly awaiting the arrival of next season. With an overall record of 18 wins and 8 losses, Coach Dick Baldwin wrote another successful chapter in Broome Tech basketball history. The alums renew friendships at a dinner, business meeting and basketball game November 15, 1958. 110 RADUATION DAY is a memorable blending of the past with the present. But most important of all, on this day, is the bright promise of a future that is yet to be won. The big adventure is just beginning. The opportunity to light up the world is now yours. On this day of days, as you stand before family and friends, you are wrapped in the warmth of pleasant memories that will live with you forevermore. You are wearing a discernible look of achieve- ment. The pride of accomplishment is your own personal badge. And rightly so, for graduation is a monument among the milestones that will mark your journey through life. At this very moment you are looking at a long procession of days and nights that, seemingly, stretch out endlessly before you. They represent the raw material with which you will be working the rest of your life ... but it is important that you do not spend too much time in the reviewing stand, watching the years pass swiftly by. March with the passing parade. Keep in step with the times, and prepare yourself at all times to take the lead whenever the opportunity arises. Within the next few months, perhaps in a matter of weeks, you will begin to face some of the major decisions that have a dominant influence on everyone’s role in life. Further education? Marriage? Choice of job opportunity and the community in which you will make your home? These are some of the major decisions which will have an important bearing on the future happiness and well-being of your- self and your family-to-be. It is well to plan wisely and proceed cautiously. Graduation day —at the very beginning of the “big adventure”, so to speak —is an especially opportune time to survey your future. This does not mean that you should merely look ahead, however, for the term “survey” has a much broader connotation. Thus, you should take a comprehensive view of the overall direction in which you are now headed. Carefully analyze all of the possibilities, and begin at once to shape your plans accordingly. Now is the time, because — to a surprisingly large degree — each individual is the architect of his own destiny.
