Tyrrell, Roy Greenwood, George Elliott, Clyde Chauncey, Richard Baldwin. We the staff of Citadel wish to express a proper tribute to the faculty members who have been with the college from the begin- ning. Their diligent work has contributed greatly to the growth in prestige Broome Tech has attained during the past decade. Each student who has walked the various corridors has in some way pro- fited by the ever-present and ever-willing aid of these leaders in the field of education. It is an amazing feat in itself that they have outlasted one fire, three college names, 1200 students and one decade. Congratualtions to each of you, for your contribution will be beneficial to the future 10,000 years. 1958 ANTHONY D. Department Chairman Lloyd Hartman 58 “omeRERR ti Senility Sa sa bh The 1957-58 basketball season will never die in the hearts of Broome Tech students, its players, and Hornet Coach Dick Baldwin. Its games will be replayed, talked about, and replayed again. When Binghamton’s sports- casters and sportswriters started calling this team “The Best Ever Assembled by Dick Baldwin,” they were only ‘telling Broome Tech students something they already knew. As the weeks passed and game after game turned up in the win column, both Dick Baldwin and the players gained the respect of many a basketball fan. The majority of basketball teams usually rely on five men to handle the bulk of the scoring, rebounding, and defensive work; but we were fortunate in having eight men all capable of starting assignments, With the scoring punch of Gene Battaglini, Kevin McCane, and Ralph Serino, the tremendous rebounding of ‘Tony Abbadessa, Ron Avery, and Gene Klym accompanied by the _ball- hawking tactics employed by Mike Ganisin and Bill Coughlin, Dick Baldwin jelled this aggregation of talent into one of the finest teams in the Southern Tier area in many a year. At the beginning of the season, the team showed great speed and shooting along with tremendous defensive play to win the first eleven games quite untested. The next two games saw the Hornets drop a thrilling one- point overtime conference game at Alfred Tech followed by a _ hair-pulling, come-from-behind, one-point victory at Roberts Wesleyan. This game was highlighted when Bill Coughlin, with less than five seconds remaining, calmly stepped to the foul line to sink both ends of a one and one. Roberts Wesleyan then tried to put the ball into play but a bad pass was intercepted by the same Bill Coughlin who hung onto the ball until time had elapsed, thus putting the game on ice. The Hornets then returned to the friendly surround- ings of upper Front Street and added three games to the win column beating Erie Tech, Mohawk Valley Tech, and New York City Tech. This game was billed as the battle of the two top Junior College Teams in the East but the Hornets proved too much for the City Tech Bees and won going away by 27 points. The Hornets might have been looking forward to the Region 15 JUCO Tournament at the end of February for they lost their next game to a previously conquered foe, Erie Tech, by a 64—61 score. Broome Tech wasn’t to lose another game the rest of the regularly scheduled season as they rolled over Auburn, Cobleskill, Paul Smiths and avenged their early season Coach Dick Baldwin loss at Alfred Tech. First place was at stake for Broome Tech but Dick Baldwin’s boys played as though it were for all the tea in China. This was a team named desire and the boys were not to be denied. Ralph Serino, Fuzzy Battaglini, Tony Abbadessa, Gene Klym, Mike Ganisin, the whole team turned the game into a rout. In the first half the Hornets started off fast and ran the score up to a halftime advantage. It appeared that many of the fans watching hated to see intermission draw near as they were afraid the team might lose its shooting edge. But at the start of the second half they were reassured and the Hornets walked off with a 77—42 victory. Both Broome and Alfred Tech ended the season with identical records of 8 wins and 2 losses. As a result the two teams were tied for first place in the Empire State Conference. If the Hornets looked as though they had hit their peak in performance at the end of the regular schedule, they were to achieve even greater heights in the Junior College Eastern Regional tournament held on Tech’s home court. Topped seeded and armed for bear the Hornets swept through two run-away games against Baltimore Junior College and Nichols Junior College. The finals pitted Broome against City Tech “Bees,” a team which already had tasted defeat at the hands of the Hornets earlier in the season. The game started with both teams feeling the pres- sures felt by playing rather cautiously with the lead changing hands several times. The first half came to a close with Broome on the long end of the score, not showing an indication of what was yet to come. When the second half started, Dick Baldwin’s boys really came to life. They outran, outsmarted, outplayed, and outscored the Bees and turned the game into a rout, the final score being 83—-58 and the team winning the right to go to the National Junior College Finals in Hutchinson, Kansas. The Tournament ended with Gene ‘Fuzzy’ Bat- taglini, receiving the Most Outstanding Player award after he a nd Kevin McCane were named to the tournament All-Star Team. Ralph Serino, Mike Ganisin, and Tony Abbadessa were named to the second All-Star Team with Gene Klym receiving honorable mention. All in all, the end of the tournament saw a 22 and 2 record, a tie for first place in the conference, and first place in the tournament. The entire team deserves many honors and great respect for the excellent brand of basket- ball played for the students and the school—again hats off, for a job well done. INTERNATIONAL IBM BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION J MEN WITH VISION ... ‘T ODAY’S YOUNG graduate engineers and technicians are men with a mission. Because of the vital role that has already been mapped out for them in our country’s future, they must also be men with vision—the ability to look ahead and see things clearly. They must have foresight. Foresight begins with the important decision of selecting the right company as an employer. Not all companies offer the exciting potential of new growth opportunities in the years ahead. It de- pends a lot on whether or not a particular company is aiming its research programs in fields that show the greatest promise of growth. It depends greatly on management attitudes . . . whether or not the men in command are alert, aggressive, and open to new ideas. Good starting salaries and interesting work assignments are to be expected by today’s graduates. It is the long range aspect of a particular position that demands critical attention . . . careful ex- amination of every detail. And men with vision are the first to realize that a little foresight goes a long way toward building a successful future.
