We the passengers who have come thus far in the journey can now sit back and watch and remember; watch the tremendous progress which we helped to initiate, and re- member the wonderful two years we spent at Broome Tech, Dedicati MISS NEVA M. ASH As the school year of 1954 chugs into a siding, a familiar figure is seen at the throttle of the Medical and Technical Office Assistant train, She is Miss Neva Ash - to her we dedicate the 1954 Citadel, Our Motto, ‘‘Knowledge and Proficiency,’’ certainly has been manifested in and by Miss Ash, Perhaps the greatest single characteristic of her success is fr iendliness, All problems brought to Miss Ash are fully understood and counseled, Personal guidance of this type is hard to surpass, As the ’54 train pulls out into the world, we leave behind our college days, but never can we for- get Miss Neva Ash - teacher, friend and counselor, ee ee att Se TST SS ey pee Sa ee ‘8. Alumni Association This year’s Alumni participation in all our events has been excellent and we hope to see as many of this year’s graduates again next year. The first Alumni whirl of the year was the annual Alumni Weekend in November, Alumni en- joyed a banquet preceding the Alumni game which was won by our Broome Tech cagers, 57-50. In the spring we again saw many familiar faces at the Alumni-Student formal] at the Arlington Hotel. Besides these two annual events, we were pleased to see some of the Alumni at many of our basket- ball and baseball games, Hats off to our former graduates! —- — aa . i A es _ ao CHARLES GREGORY RICHARD LATHAM MARTHA HUMPHREY ELMER DOZIER President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer 83 Anna Kintner 84 The first scheduled run was to State Park for the Get-Acquainted picnic - one of the events included in the Big Brother Program, All new passengers were issued black and gold beanies, and were required to wear them to the first dance of the trip in the Lounge Car, In fact, the hats were worn until the stop-over allowed for the Frosh-Senior Volleyball Game (Frosh won - threw the caps out the windows). Those who had refused to abide by the rules were taken into the Din- ing Car and smacked with pies, The name of the road was changed to Broome County Technical Institute. Now the fare is split three ways among the state, the county, and the pas- senger, Plans are being drafted for a new roundhouse and freight yards, The company hopes to be at the new locations in the fall of 755, A new motto - Knowledge and Proficiency - was painted on all the cars, Extra-curricular activities for passengers and em- ployees were offered, We stopped off in Witches? Valley for a Halloween Dance, A flatcar was filled with hay and hooked behind the caboose for a rousing hayride, The cheerleaders wandered through the cars peddling goodies to raise money for new uniforms, It was a year of tough competition in the intramural vol- leyball field. The mixedteams were especially active. Again the Lounge Car was filled so that all could join in a bit of Christmas carolling, led by the Glee Club, Mistletoe and colored lights were strung as background for Christmas dancing. Soon afterward, the train was emptied as all travelers stopped off at their home towns for a fine vacation. Former passengers once more got aboard for a of Events banquet. Following the meal, the annual Alumni-Var- sity basketball game was held in a boxcar emptied especially for the occasion, We stopped in a real dreamy little town where they were having a Queen of Hearts Ball. Much to our pleasure one of our most gracious fellow-passengers - Anna Kintner - was enthroned as the Queen of Hearts, We hated to get aboard again - it was a fine ball. The cars were cleaned and polished as room was made for extra passengers on twooccasions, Parents’ Day boasted a tour and supper, with the Glee Club and basketball team furnishing entertainment, Open House found about 400 visitors wandering through the train admiring our fine equipment. Awards were given to those passengers who had made outstanding contributions to the smooth and successful operation of the line for the year. In the spring we were once more switched onto a siding in Chenango Valley long enough to ‘‘live-it-up- a-little” at a fine picnic and relax to the dreamy music of Ned Dunham at our Student-Alumni formal Moonglow, held in the Lounge Car, The last two runs scheduled for the ’53-?54 year were memorable ones, The Senior Class alighted from the train on a lovely hill over-looking Endwell, Here they dined and danced at the annual Senior Dinner-Dance, Following the dance, the engineer pulled off the main line and all passengers assembled in the main office of the company where the Class of 54 got their final walking papers, It was a fine trip! Then, after a tough opening 57-50 win over a youthful and spirited Alumni five, misfortune in the shape of in- eligibility overtook the Black and Gold and two start- ers left the squad, Revamping a team after the sea- son has started is always tough and by the time the 92 Be GAR CHRIS av CAVATIS Hornets had acquired a ‘‘new look,’? they had dropped road games to strong Cobleskill and Kings quintets, However, the team gelled at Utica as Mohawk Val- ley Tech succumbed 66-46; then, midst the friendly environs of Kalurah Temple, the Baldwinmen in rapid succession recorded three big wins over Canton Tech, Oneonta State, and Erie Tech - the latter a personal triumph for little Chris Galatis, next year’s captain, who jammed 23 points (he got 27 in all) through the nets in the last half of a 78-72 victory. From this point on the club suffered the vagaries of all inexperienced teams, losing mostly on the road and letting potential victories slip away. At the same time, it registered some notable wins: an exciting 79- 99 triumph in Roberts Wesleyan’s ‘‘swimming pool”? as ‘Bones’? Bensen, a freshman with no previous ex- perience, became an established star with 23 points against the Wesleyan full-court press; a 103-51 rout of Hudson Valley Tech that set a new team scoring mark; a thrilling 56-54 victory in the Black and Gold’s first incursion of Alfred Tech; an avenging 90-80 set- back of the Morrisville Aggies with Galatis racking up 26; and an always-pleasant 74-58 road massacre of Bob Brown’s Delhi Broncos. Of interest, perhaps, is the Hornets home mark of 8 wins and 2 losses and its away record of 4 wins and 8 losses, The outlook for the coming season is exciting in- deed. With Galatis, Bensen, Charlie Sax and Jim Niefer back, Nick Komanowski likely to be available, and Bill Pichette, Joe Spalik, George Moschak, Steve Kubiva and Frank Micalizzi ready to move up from the J.V.’s, Broome Tech might well sport one of its most powerful court squads, In addition, interest in the campaign will be en- OUGB - BGCORE 93 a A, (°) ‘ , ‘ H Teese hanced by the reincarnation of the Empire State Jun- ior College Conference, Ten colleges assembled at Morrisville in March and nine - Broome Tech, Alfred Tech, Cobleskill Aggies, Canton Tech, Morrisville Aggies, Erie Tech, Mohawk Valley Tech, Hudson Val- ley Tech, and Paul Smiths College - decided to join the conference and elected Dick Baldwin to head the loop for 1954-55, In basketball, each team will play an eight-game league schedule, meeting each of the eight other conference members once in loop en- counters, Post-season competition is also planned for next year withthe possibility that the top four lea- gue teams will participate in a playoff to determine the champion, With prospects for a fine team high and interest re- kindled by the rebirth of the Empire State Junior Col- lege Conference, Broome Tech fans are looking for- ward with pleasure to the 1954-55 basketball season. Varsity Volleyball The Broome Tech varsity Volleyball team took second place in the College Section of the Boston V Party sponsored by the Boston Y.M.C.A. It took second place in the Metropolitan Tournament in New York City sponsored by Cooper Union, tied for fifth place in Section A of the Stan Bown Intercollegiate Volleyball Tournament, and placed first in a triangular tournament at Tech in Feb- urary. The team also entered three big tournaments in which most of the other teams were more experienced Y.M.C.A, teams - The Jenkins Memorial Tournament sponsored by the Binghamton Y.M.C.A., The Gardner Memorial Tournament sponsored by the Scranton Y,M.C.A., and the Open Section of the Boston V Party. The junior varsity team played various nearby teams and entered three tournaments. It was eliminated in two matches at the Gardner Tournament, but took first place in the B Section of the Boston V Party’s College Tournament, It tied for fourth place in the B Section of the Stan Bown Tournament, For years women students at Broome Tech have enjoyed both women’s volleyball and mixed vol- leyball played by teams of three men and three women, This year a Broome Tech women’s team, coached by Dick Leo, entered the Women’s Section of the Gardner Tournament in Scranton, It was eliminated in two matches but put up a good fight against the other more experienced teams, Tech’s outstanding achievement in volleyball this year was to co-sponsor, with the Board of Governors of the IL.B.M. Country Club, and the Binghamton Chamber of Commerce, the Stan Bown Intercollegiate Volleyball Tournament, held at the I.B.M. Field House, Two years ina row Tech has had its volleyball captain injured and out of the game for a month or more, Last year, Co-Captains John Armstrong and Jack Lowery, and John Fitch were hospital- ized for several months by an auto accident while returning from a tournament at Scranton. This year, Captain Joe Armstrong broke an ankle in a tournament at Scranton, and was replaced tempo- rarily by Co-Captains John Fitch and Gordie Hitt, both of whom were in the accident last year, The 1953-’54 varsity volleyball team included: Captain Joe Armstrong, Co-Captains Gordon Hitt, and John Fitch, Tony Ruspantini, Dick Leo, Red Schroeder, Ronnie Carroll, all seniors; and two freshmen, Lindy Isabella and Al Gillow. The junior varsity team included: Captain John Armstrong, Lindy Isabella, Al Gillow, Bob Whit- ney, Larry Cramer, and Glenn Rice, Bob Whitney was manager of both varsity and junior varsity teams, 95 J.
