OUR CLASS Class Scientist Connie Shick, John Campbell And everyone in their hearts Will know that we have won. 15 1974-1980 They Were Good Years We started our high school life in seventh grade determined to make it work. Finally, ninth grade came mid with it our last year of junior high. It was also our year for the ninth grade party that we called “Beyond the Sunset.” Tenth grade started our senior high years and we discovered that the years got harder. This year also proved our school spirit. We won “Spirit Week” in 1977!!! Our class officers for this year were Carin, Jean, Pete and Alice. Then came our junior year and the magazine sale. Our class officers Carin, Shonna, Tina mid Tom Hetrick led us to a great goal and more. Our efforts totaled up to $7,422! The Junior—Senior Prom at first seemed impossible but with a few good, hard workers mid a very patient Mr. Mester, we made it a memorable night for everyone. The theme for the Prom was “Sharing the Night Together.” Finally comes the biggest year of our lives. Our senior year, our last year of being in Brookville High, and with this year comes the realization of a life ahead of us. Glenda Powell reigns over Homecoming 1979 with her court members Sue Ord, Carin Shirley, Tina Brenneman and Rhonda Mineweaser. As we look back to our life here, we’ll find many good things to remember and a few things we won’t want to remember. But I know, no matter what any-lx dy might say, that deep down, way down inside we will all miss our school, our friends and eighteen years of our lives. 16 Scott Allshouse Roy Barron Sheri Best Michael Bezak senior! Not pictured: Mindy McMuniglc. 108 - — — • • Jf £oo Jft Sports Spirit, determination, youth, enthusiasm, hustle—all these qualities and many more were perfect labels to apply to the all of the fine Brookville Raider sports teams in the 1979-80 school year. The various Raider teams provided end-to-end, goalline-to-goalline action for all of the sports enthusiasts in the Brookville area. The Brookville Raider football squad, under head coach AI Lefevre, proved to be an indicator of things to come when they started their season last August. The Raiders, for their first game against Keystone, were faced with the prospect of fielding what Lefevre termed the “youngest team in Brookville football history.” Brookville only had nine return ing lettermon on the squad, and had a total of 14 of 22positions manned by underclassmen. Nevertheless, the football Raiders demonstrated the heart of a great Brookville sports team. They not only went out and pounded Keystone, but swept over four other opponents—Moniteau, A-C Valley, Shannock Valley and Clarion-Limestone—on their way to a 5—4 season, tin' first winning season for Brookville since 1976. The trademark of the Raiders proved to be a mobile, aggressive, swarming defense capable of shutting down the opponent’s offensive attack. Brookville recorded three shutouts on the season and gave up only 6 points in a fourth game. The biggest game of the football season was undoubtedly the homecoming matchup between the Raiders and their arch-rival, the Brock way Rovers. The contest proved to be a fierce, exciting match, finally won by the league co-champion Rovers. And even though Brockway did pull out the game in the final quarter, the Raiders walked away from the field with the proud distinction of having been in a great match. ROjtf rj i , r jV ■p While defense and tenacity were the name of the game in football, unequaled energy was Jon Benton’s Brookville Raiderettes’ trademark. The Raiderettes, after suffering through two losing seasons which were spent rebuilding the team and giving needed experience to younger players, came on strong in 1979 and gave basketball fans some of the best games ever witnessed in Brookville. Keyed by captain Rhonda Mineweaser, high scorer Paula Pudlo and other standouts Barb Reinard, Sandy Mineweaser, Kelly Miller, and Janice Grottenthaler, the Raiderettes gave even the strongest teams in the district a tough game. Often towered over in height but never outshined in courage, Brookville had their best season in three years, ending with an even 9—9 record. In their last season in the Laurel League (next season will see the Raiderettes in the Clarion County League), Brookville managed to upset such league powers as Clearfield, Elk County and Bradford. If there was one particular game that best showed the character of the Raiderettes, it was probably their second game against the Brockway Roverettes. Playing before one of the most enthusiastic crowds to ever see a girls’ basketball game, Brookville came from behind time after time after time, finally tying the Roverettes at the end of regulation time and sending the game into overtime. The two teams so evenly matched, locked horns through three overtimes before a basket by Rhonda Mineweaser in the fourth extra period brought the Raiderettes a victory. The win was especially sweet in that it enabled Brookville to sweep both ends of the season series versus Brockway, a feat not previously performed in more than three years. For the Brookville cross country team, the 1979 season was primarily a rebuilding year, with the team having lost its top four runners from the 1978 squad. Top harrier was Jeff Ent, who showed himself capable of running with the district’s best. Other top runners on the boys’ squad were Chris Haines, Brian Hawthorne, Randy Reitz, Greg Haney, Scott Hays, Tom Brosius, Ban O’Donnell, Steve Cook, Doug Gilbert, Terry Blochberger, Thad Turner, Jim Rowan, Warren Bmmrnel, Greg Gnlbrenth and Rob St. Laurent. For the girls, a pleasant surprise was the strong performances in many of the meets by a very young, very inexperienced group of runners. Lori Lauffer and Cindy Dush paced the girls efforts, with Alana Hollobaugh, Diane Dush and Julie Simon also contributing well to the team. 109 On the wrestling scene, many thought that a small turnout might hurt Brookville’s fortunes on the mat in the 1979-80 season. But head coach Les Turner, undaunted, built yet another fine squad of grapplere in the mold of his other excellent teams in years past. The Raiders racked up a number of victories, and took some powerful foes to the limit before falling in defeat. Individual top wrestlers for the Raiders were Matt Smith at 105, Chris Haines at 132, Thad Turner at 145, Scott Hays at 138 and Dave Wenzel at 185. For the best wrestling dual meet of the year, a fan would have to remember the 30-29 thriller that Brookville pulled out against the visiting Punxsutawney Chucks. With the Raiders down by five points, heavy weight Eric Hammond pinned his man with less than ten seconds left in the match to grab the match for Brookville. With the advent of the winter sports season came the rebirth of Raider basketball team in District IX competition. Brookville, under first-year mentor Dan Murdock, equaled their win production of the previous two years of district play when they downed Brockway at the start of the year. With Pete Blair and Greg Painter leading the Raiders in scoring, Brookville quickly swept to their best season in three years in district competition, including a sweep of two games against the Rovers of Brockway. The high point for the Raider basketball team was undoubtedly their conquest of the Purchase Line Invitational Holiday Tournament after Christmas. After downing host school Purchase Line in the semi-finals, Brookville put in a steele stellar show in sinking Apollo-Ridge for the tournament title. In addition to winning the team championship, the Raiders placed Blair and Painter on the All-Tournament team, and had Blair walk away with the trophy for the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. In the swimming pool, coach Rick Smoose led the Raider aquanauts to a season of great performances on both the individual and team sides of the ledger. One of the biggest wins for the boys came early in the year when they upset Titusville, winning the meet on the very last relay. New varsity swimming records were set by senior Matt Emery, in the 100 butterfly, and junior Sandy Mineweaser, in the 100 breaststroke. Besides Emery and Mineweaser, other top performers for the swimming Raiders were Terry Blochberger, Blane Kerr, Mike Heschke, Rick Dush, Dan Deible, Bob Pudlo, Cindy Dush, Diane Dush and Jen Harding. With the return of spring, many more fine and exciting sports will hit the scene once again. Activities such as track and field, girls’ volleyball, golf, baseball and softball will soon be budding for attention. All Brookville sports fans are looking with great anticipation to yet another outstanding season of athletic action. by Jim Calder + 'v k The Class Of 1980 Has Done It Again!
