I can’t do that, Mr. Oberleiter! Wow! There’s an application for Koter Tech! CLASS OF 1979 The Class of 1979' That’s us! Now we’re the seniors, the “big guys,” the ones looked up to by the underclassmen for guidance. But it was not so long ago that we were the new seventh graders. Our class entered BAHS in August, 1973, and began an exciting learning and growing experience. Ninth grade marked the first time we acted as a class as we worked together to turn our ninth grade party, Dream On,” into a dream come true. Tom Crawford did a great job as class president. Many of our class members represented BAHS on the junior National Honor Society trip to Boston. We were also involved in the spring musical “Kiss Me Kate” in every aspect from acting, singing and dancing to stage crew, pit orchestra and publicity. Our class was ac--lively involved in every sport and helped lead the “Baby Raiders” on to many victories. OK you guys! Who stole my picture of Shaun Cassidy? 34 1 still don’t get it. Tenth grade ushered us into the new and some -times confusing world of senior high. We were offered many more elective courses, particularly in business and music. It was an exciting year, again led by president Tom Qrawford, where we became involved in J.V. sports, joined many new clubs and ordered class rings. Two of the most exciting events to happen that year were winning the annual Spirit Week contest and having sixteen sophomores elected into the Senior National Honor Society for the first time ever in BHH5 history. Eleventh grade arrived and suddenly we realized that we only had one more year to go! We weren’t left with much time to think about that, though, as we were caught up in the excitement of our junior year—' beginning with the magazine sale The 79 Superb-stars’’ were led by Mr. Galbrcath’s high homeroom and high salesman, Linda Spratt, to surpass our goal of S11,000 and sell a grand total of $16,462. Our special thanks to president Ted Truman and treasurer Larry Stewart. 35 A typical example of loafing in the Guidance Office. Our next and most important event was our junior--Senior Prom. We worked for months painting murals, designing centerpieces and sculptures, estimating needed refreshments, and drawing up programs and tickets. We often wondered if we would ever get done on time and if it would all turn out, but then, thanks to Mr. Mester, May 5 found the gymnasium turned into a Grand Illusion,” complete udth styrofoam sculp-' tures, a fountain, sparkling columns, and the band, Ya Mama,” which had us so worried when they didn’t sign their contract. ♦ J f ♦ t £ 2 f 2 2 ❖ T 2 2 2 ♦ 2 2 2 2 ? 2 t But what would Kathy say? Now suddenly, we’re seniors and we’ll be gradu--ating and leaving B M1S, with only our memories and friendships to remind us of the many good years we vc had here. Our senior year started two weeks late due to the teachers’ strike, but once school was in progress, we got things rolling with our election of class officers. Ted Truman was re-'dectcd president, Tom Crawford for vice president, Valerie Shobert for secretary and Chris O’Donnell for treasurer. This year we had many things to look forward to with practices and rehearsals for events, celebrating Homecoming, and honoring our senior members of football, chcerleadingand band. We also had our class sponsored spaghetti dinner, the spring musical ‘‘Sound of Music,” the senior trip, and all of the other things that made our senior year something special! 37 Janet Reitz 9jC j|C 9jC jJC 5jc 5jc sjc i|c 3 C 9jC 9jC 9|e 9 6 9jC 9jC 9jC Sj( 9jC 9jc jJC 3jC 9jc 5jC 9jC |s 9j€ 9jC 5|C 9jC 9jC jjc )jc j|C 3jc 9|C 9|C 9jC 9jC 3jC 9|C 3|C 9|C 9|C jJC !jc 3jC Our class is a very special one, made up of very special people! The Spirit of “79” is all around us, but is especially found in all the sports, including foot-' ball, girls’ and boys’ basketball and swimming, golf, wrestling, volleyball, track, cross-country, etc., where our classmates have been found breaking records, earning letters, and helping the Raiders carry home big Raider victories. Examples of the Raider spirit can be found in the two “Athlete of the Year” winners from our class. They were Maxine Birch in tenth grade and Jim Harding in eleventh. This year’s varsity football team had no less than twelve seniors on it. Manager was Ray Byerly and statistician was Vince Benigni who has devoted his Saturdays of the past two football seasons to taking statistics for the Raiders. October 21, 1978, marked an important day as we honored forty senior band members, cheer-' leaders and football players before the Brookvillc vs. Redbank game. Homecoming Queen Val Shobert and her court: First runner-up Barbie Smith; Second runner-up Jody Powell; Patty Hetrick and Pam McKay, presided over the halftime festivities and watched our Raiders beat Redbank 32-7. Four senior girls, Kathy McManiglc, Chris O’Donnell, Val Shobert and Barbi Smith, practiced long hours on the girls’ basketball court striving to improve their game. This year’s girls’ basketball king was Bud Baughman and Dave Maxwell was first runner'-up. Another example of true Raider spirit and dedication can be found in Peg Daugherty who has run many miles for BAH5 on the girls’ cross-country team, with little recognition and support. Way to go, Peg! Cheering and spectator support is an important part of all sports and many cheerleaders have come from the Class of ’79. Two new additions to the football sidelines this year were Jeff Crossmun and John Milford. Four varsity mascots have been chosen from the Class of '79. Sue Matthews is the current football mascot. Jody Powell and Barbie Ord were basketball mascots, and Pam McKay was wrestling mascot during our junior year in '77--’78. While every one of our seniors is a winner, several have put in extra long hours working to improve in their sport and they have received special recognition. Julie Stahlman swam her way to States on the relay team in ninth grade, as did Chris Dusch in the eleventh grade, doing the free style. Jim Harding was a District wrestling champ in eleventh grade and Todd Emcrick went to States this year with his golfing. All of these people did a fine job representing BAHS and our class. Many of us were in the musical “Kiss Me Kate” in ninth grade where we made up a large part of the chorus and were also found in the Pitt Orchestra and working with publicity. Four of our members also had special acting parts. Tracy Ohl played Hattie, who was maid to the female star and Jim Boyer played Paul who was butler to the male star. Terry Keth played the stage doorman, and Jim Harding was the Haberdasher. All who were in Kiss Me Kate” had a great time and have been looking forward to this year’s musical “The Sound of Music.” Six of the lead parts are to be played by seniors: Tracy Ohl as Maria, Sam Goodwill as Captain Von Trapp, Janet Reitz as Elsa Schracder, lim Harding as Max Setweiler, Val Shobert as the Mother Abbess, and Earry Stewart as Rolf Gruber. Student directors are Val DePope and Einda Spratt. -jj- « « j. 9|e9ie9|e3|e9|e9|eaie9ic9|e9|c9|e3|e3|eaie3|c3|e3|ea|ea|e9|c9|c9|c3|c9|c3|c3ie3fe9ic9ic3|c3ic3|c3|e3|c3ic3ie9|e9|c3|ea|c3fc3|c9|e3ie9|e3|c4e3|e3|c9|c9|c3(c9fc3|c3|c9|c3|c3|c3|c9|c9|c5{c3)c3ies|e9(c -jj. .j-. t- .1 i. Tracy Ohl is Drum Majorette and Paula Grccnawault was the ’77 ’78 Marching Unit Captain. Tracy Ohl and Valeric Shobcrt were selected to attend The Eastern Division Music Education Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey. As a senior, Jeff Hciplc was voted outstanding citizen by our class and received the D.A.R. Good Citizen's Award. Sixteen of our classmates were elected to National Senior Honor Society as sophomores for the first time ever in 8AHS history. They were: Tom Crawford, Val DcPopc, Eynne Exline, Sheila Fryer, Jim Harding, Jeff Hciplc, Pat Hetrick, Dave Kcldscn, John Kutz, Cliff Laurich, Paul Eindemuth, Curt Manley, Jeff Miller, Tracy Ohl, L,isa Park and Janet Reitz. The Class of’79 furnished seven Junior Marshalls for Graduation '78. They were Tom C.raw ford, Val DcPopc, Eynne Exlinc, Sheila Fryer, Jeff Hciplc, Eisa Park and Einda Spratt. Einda Spratt and Sheila Fryer were chosen from our class to represent Brookvillc at the American Eegion Seminar, “Girl’s State.’’ Tom Crawford and Kathy McManigal won the D.A.R. Award for outstanding achievement in American History. Six of Student Council’s officers have come from the Class of ’79. Cliff Eaurich was elected president for this year but had to move, and Sam Goodwill has taken over as president and is doing a great job. Patty Hetrick is Council’s secretary. In past years, Ted Truman was vice Dresident and Pam McKay was secretary. Now, as we, the Class of 1979 look to the future, we should remember this: We’ve only just begun to live.... So many roads to choose. We start out walking and learn to run. And yes, we’ve just begun... 40 Come on Harry, don't be shy. ‘u’lun ©EHi 'ipnw ©IF HM®®iwinuL b® rTiiimxiiiiiiiiiuiiim H COME COMMENCEMENT A graduating senior is a very special thing; A fledgling bird, poised to take wing. But once you leave, you’re on your own, Whether or not you’re really grown. So fast, though, can college change your mind, That soon you’ll laugh at what you left behind. 3ut how do we keep alive the memories of things past? If we care enough, then through the years they’ll last. And the dreams we’ve formed; the hopes we hold; Let not these rot and cover with mold. Don’t allow the dreams to slip through your hand; Let only you, your future command. IN THE BLIND SPOT by Curt Manley Our last days here are numbered. We’re feeling all closed-in. Look one way, our future is bright, The other, it’s dark and dim. How we’ll survive the next few years Is just about anyone’s guess. Will tomorrow find us unemployed? Or smothered in success? by Curt Manley M XXXXXX1 by Susan Green All the days we’ve come to school will linger in our minds. The days of drifting out the window to catch a butterfly or watch the CB’ers go crusln down the line. We’ll always have flubs and probably join clubs, But will it be the same . . . All of the joys and the boys the good and the bad the happy and sad Soon it will all be memories. n ‘[iiiimiiiTr: 41 SATURDAY AT BROOKVILLE HIGH There was something special about that Saturday afternoon; The air was brisk as the swirling wind whipped about, But no one seemed to care. It was an autumn Saturday at Brookville High; Young and old alike drop their present activities and turn their attention to the warriors— The Raiders of Brookville High. The crowd was dotted along the hill, sitting still As the visitor’s lineup was announced. But then a clangor arose as the crowd uttered primitive prose— As our starting player’s names were pronounced, It was Saturday at Brookville High. The anxious crowd was asked to stand For our Brookville Raider marching band Was proudly playing the Alma Mater. The older alumni quietly reminisced And found that they sorely missed The memories of those same Saturday afternoons— Those Saturdays of Brookville High. The game had long begun, and all the crowd, every one Was at odds with a man in a striped shirt Who seemed to be the only man in the way of a Raider victory— Throwing endless flags which constantly impeded the Raider marches toward the opponent’s goal line. Suddenly, the crowd forgot adversity As a pass by our Raider quarterback Fell into the arms of an elated Brookville receiver, The game-winning touchdown! The crowd was frenzied—as the final gun had sounded, And all involved, fans and players alike, Departed this magical scene with a warm feeling inside. A lone man, an elder, indeed remained seated on the hill after the game. It was clearly evident that he had been part of this experience before, His facial expression seemed to cry once more For those Saturdays of Brookville High. Super Seniors of Seventy-Nine Invariably have the spirit of the year. The notion of being second never crossing our mind, With all our pep in school it’s clear We are the Super Seniors of Seventy-Nine. by John Milford ’Twas the day before vacation, when all through the school; Everyone was rowdie, everyone was cool; The students were sitting each in his own place; While daydreams brought out smiles on each one’s face. The teachers were yelling and cracking their whip ; While the students chewed gum, constantly smacking their lips. All of a sudden the bell began to chime, (and I can’t think of anything to make this line rhyme). As soon as the students were in eigth period class, There were still a few in the hall without a pass. Then all of a sudden to the students’ surprise; In through the windown flew an army of flies. They flew in through the windows and ate all the books while students sat still with satisfying looks. They flew In the lunch room and ate all the food which put hungry people in a very bad mood. And we never again saw those flies anymore, If you close all the windows they’ll fly in the door. by Anne Burnaman by Vince Benignl 42 It was the twenty-first of October, just one year ago. There were leaves all around us, down around thirty or so. The wind was quite chilly, and our cheeks quite red. And by the way we were running, you’d swear we saw a Fed. They ran past the library, all twelve of our feet. We began the arrogant dare, at the far end of Main Street. We ran 'cross the football field, no fear of being caught. And just as the custodians got off we streaked through the lot! by Scott Brush MY MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE FAREWELL TO A SENIOR My most memorable experience occurred in the month of May, the year 1978. Disaster had struck our home, and I was soon to learn how manyfriends I had. The fire blazed and people swarmed around, offering their sincere regrets, homes for the night, clothing and several other bare necessities that we would need for the night. It was hard to believe how comforting the very people you went to school with could be. It seemed that they knew of the fire before I did. Today and tomorrow we will be near, Always remembering that one special year. It was great being the oldest; Everyone looked at us as the boldest. It wouldn’t be long, Till we would be gone, Always rememberingthe Brookville song, Memories that have lasted so long. Some of the clubs and classes gave gifts and donations. Even before the blaze was extinguished, we had several loads of clothing and many comforting people to hold our hands and help us on our way. I shed some tears and they were wiped away. I felt alone, and they made me feel as though I weren’t alone. School mates, teachers, administrators, and people of the town, I will remember them always because they I lifted me when I was down, and they helped me when I needed them. Our decisions have just begun. No matter where you go, you will make some. So as you leave, don’t forget, Always remember the people you met. Today we lookforward to Graduation Day; Tomorrow we face the world, In our own special way. by Jackie Smith by Alice Harris 43 o o o o o Lunchtime, my favorite time of the day, O To the front of the line, cutting all the n way- And to my surprise I had found, O A sweet pea which was ground q Into the sole of my shoe. o O Proceeding into the lunch scene, I was abruptly struck by a green bean. MY MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE Days gone by, they seemed so fast. They had only begun and then were past. The beginning years, starting with the first— It always seemed each year was worse. And though we won’t admit it all, During all of those years we had a ball. The teachers, parties, the classes too, They all were fun—just to name a few. We rant and rave wishing for the last, When all of our school days will be past. But when it’s here, we will not cheer. We’ll say we’re glad, when inward we’re sad. We say good-bye, and some will cry And we’ll leave together, Leave B.H.S. forever. MY MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE SPIRIT WEEK 78 When Spirit Week came in Seventy-Eight, We Sophomores had to celebrate Because our class was put to the test And came through betterthan all the rest. We worked all week on signs and cheers And knew that as the big day neared That the Class of ’80 was high on top And we were impossible to stop. We threw confetti, we yelled and screamed; We knew we made a terrific team, And when they announced the best of them all, The Class of ’80 stood proud and tall. by Angie Means by Fred Martz by Shonna Gill IbdbdCnlbdbilbdbdbdbdbilbdbdbilCMllMlbilbdbJbilbilCMlbilbilbdbdbdbdbdbdbdbdbdbdbJbilbdbdbilbdbdbdbdbdbdbilbilbdb WWWWWWWWWW'IMMPWIPIMMMP'IMPWWWWW'ICIMMMP'IPWIP'IMPWWIP'IMPIMPWW'IPW' ICW'IPIMMMPWWW'ir'ir'IPWWWIPIMMPWIPW'iririMMPW'IPWWIP'lMPIPW'IMPW'IP'IMPIMMMrW N.db.lbdbllbdbdbdbdbdb«lbdbdbdbdbdbdbJbdbdbdbdbdbJbdbdbdbdbdb«lbllbdbdbdbdbdb«lbdbdbdb«lbdbdbJbdbdbdbllb iPwwwwwwwiPwwwwwwwiMrwiPiPiPWicwwwiPwwwwwiwwwwwwwwwiPWWWir ibdbdbjbdbdbjbjbjbjbdbjbjbjbabdbjcabjbjbjbjbdbjbdbdbdbdbdbjbdbdbdbdbdbdbdbdbjbdbdbjbjbdbdbjbjbdbj 45 MA AMIMfi ftiAHS i Say what???
