Sci. coordinator Bill Elder History Dan Hoffman History Social Studies Teachers Explore Other Cultures The social studies department is one which covers a wide range of subjects. It covers such topics as Geography, History, Sociology, Government, and Economics. Each one of these is useless alone but together they are essential for everyone today. We must know where we are, how we got there, who helped us, what we must do to stay there and how we can better ourselves. The Social Studies can be summed up as the study of Man against Nature, Man against Man, and Man against Himself. Eleanor Ewing History and Geography 22 Bob Johnson Pa. History Patrick McQuigan History William French World Culture Lon Sebring U.S. History Librarians: Locksmiths Of Library Frances Benninger Mary Long Betty Elza Librarian Librarian Librarian Coordinator The Librarians are the locksmiths of the school library. Often a student wishes to unlock some great treasure of knowledge but does not have the key. The Librarians provide him with the key by explaining and demonstrating the use of such things as the card catalogue, the vertical file, almanacs, and reference books. After the librarians have taught him these things, the student can gain infinite wealth in knowledge. Mrs. Jackson and Mr. Rockey solve an A.V. problem A.V. Is School Nerve Center The Audio-Visual Department is the school’s Mechanical nerve center. They keep all the teaching equipment running, take and develop pictures, prepare tapes and filmstrips, and record and broadcast their own programs. Without the A.V. department, we would have to revert to the dull textbook method of learning. John Rocky A.V. Coordinator Frank Loncharic 23 A Sound Body Builds A Sound Mind The Physical Education Department is a separate division from the other departments. While others are working on the mind, Phys. Ed. concentrates its time on the developement of the body. They follow the idea that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind. The school nurse also works toward this idea. Her job gives her the responsibility for 1200 healthy bodies. Ruth Clarke Gym - Health Jean Wiseman Gym - Health Coaches anxiously watch their boys in action. Leslie Turner Gym — Health Helen Bennett School Nurse John Sain Gym Health 24 Custodians And Kitchen Helpers Are Valuable Workers The Custodians have a very important job, for they are responsible for keeping our school immaculate. It is their work which has given Brookville its fame for its beautiful football field. The school Cooks have an enormous job. They must supply balanced meals for hundreds of students 180 days a year. They also work overtime for special banquets and dinners. After the meals are over, the ladies still have the dishes to wash and the cafeteria to clean. Without the cooks and custodians our school could not function. Hard at work keeping our gym clean. Vice-President; Beth Badgett. Secretary; John Miller. Treasurer. That Which We Are, The Senior You ask me now, how I do feel. That I a Senior be. I may have changed, but stay myself, I hope you all will see. Although I am a Senior, And have gained this place in life, I want to be a citizen. Be myself, to seek peace, not strife. I have gained this place, it was a fight, And with God’s help, it’s come out right. Now you all know, how I do feel. But this I must confess. It was my teachers, parents, friends. That made my life a real success. 28 Zenobia Ewing Diana Ames Nancy Ames Chemistry students uncover a few of Nature’s secrets. Sally Birch Robert Berg One Equal Temper . . . We have finally reached the top of our school career. The twelve years which we looked forward to with doubt have now passed. We are now the Seniors; the people we have always looked up to as the “big kids” of the school. Somehow things are not as we thought they would be. We did not wake and suddenly find ourselves a year older, grown up, and ready to take on a new role. There was no great change in our size, personality, or relationships. We did not break into a year of fun, freedom, and glory. Everyone remained the same. We looked, talked, and thought in the same ways. Everyone remained the same. This year, we have similar problems to face and to solve. We are what we were. Larry and Todd saunter towards the bandroom. Through five years of home life and twelve years of school, our lives have been planned for us. We can no longer rely on others to make our decisions. They were given responsibilities. They plunged into their annual magazine sale and one of the Juniors became the highest salesman in the history of Brookville High School. With the money they received from the sale they planned, promoted, and provided the ’71 Seniors with a magnificent prom. Even though they were admired by the remaining underclassmen those power hungry little devils anticipated being the 72 Seniors. Junior Officers — Tom Ferraro. With their 8-0-1 record, they beat all previous Raider records. The team’s lire and dedication were overshadowed only by their desire to win. The coaches drilled and worked the team, trying to whip them into shape, and did. They turned out a powerful, smooth-moving machine that let nothing stand in its way. The boys put all they had into every game and carved themselves a place in Raider history. Captain Fred Gccr poses for a picture. Coaches: 1st row — Bill Elder, Vernon Schreckengost, At Lefevre. 2nd row — John Fleming. John Anderson, Lon Sebring, Jack Sain. 89 Spirit Surged With Each Win. Practice made perfect Rox rallies Raiders Each game was strongly attended, no matter how wet, cold, or far it was. All the practice, effort, and discomfort seemed worth it as Brookville claimed another victory. With each successive win mounted the spirit and readiness for the next game. Relief and joy were all too apparent as the Raiders turned over their final victory and claim to the championship. Brookville once again fulfilled tradition by crowning a Homecoming queen. The half-time performance was begun with the Marching Unit doing a drill to the Band’s accompaniment of “Love is Blue”. While the Band played “Georgie Girl”, the candidates and their escorts proceeded across the football field. The Choir dedicated a song to the court prior to the announcement of the winner. Then last year’s queen relinquishes her crown to the 1970 Homecoming queen. The Band concluded the proceedings with the heart-rendering Alma Mater. Emotions prevail as the Band plays the Alma Mater. 93 “We Got Our Victory” Coach LeFevre accepts the trophy for the victorious season. After the Raiders won their final game, completing an undefeated season, a pep rally was held in their honor. He presented a general talk on the college, and then opened himself to questions proposed by the students. 134 Several times this year the Explorers Club performed services for the community. One Saturday in November, for example, ten members volunteered to paint the kitchen of the Memorial Home. The home employees were so pleased with the work that they asked the boys to paint the two adjoining rooms a bright yellow, too. So, a simple three hour job turned out to be an all day affair. The task wasn’t all drudgery, however. The grateful ladies served the boys lunch, and when they were through with the job they decided that there was as much paint on their clothes as on the walls. Explorers often do exciting things. This summer eight selected members went to the University of Colorado in Ft. Collins, Colorado, to compete in the National Explorer Olympics. Only three Explorer posts from Pa. participated, and ours was priviledged to represent Western Pa. The team had little success, but that was overshadowed by the great fun the boys had. A hi-lite of the trip was the Volkswagen bus’ engine blowing up on the way. These eight Explorers traveled to Ft. Collins, Colorado to compete in the National Explorers Olympics. This year’s Latin clubs, though smaller than before, have shown that Latin is not dead in Brookville. Latin II learns the basic Latin language, while at the same time learning many of the fundamentals of the English language. They study Caesar’s conquest of Gaul and the rise of the Great Roman Empire. The Argonauts, Latin IV and III, study the wanderings of Aeneas and the mythical founding of Rome in Virgil’s Aeneid. 150 Spanish Club — Los Amigos Miss Kay Lewis, Advisor; Anne Noe, President; Mike Fenstermaker, Vice-President; Sue Ludwig, Secretary; Patty Gunning, Treasurer; Ten Fenstermaker, Linda McAninch, Roxanne Trombetto, Chris Carberry. At the beginning of the year they traveled to the Indiana University of Pennsylvania to see the movie “Summerskin” in which only Spanish was spoken. When the school year nears its end they turn their thoughts to lighter subjects. On Pan American Day, Spanish Club holds its annual fiesta. At the gay occasion they tie their language to its homeland with Spanish food and games. 151 Ann listens to a Spanish tape.
