Gridders Overpowered Seven Opponents This year's BH5 Blue Raider football team built up a record to be proud of. After losing the first two games of the season to Karns City and Clarion, our Raiders rallied behind their now-famous war cry of someone's gotta pay and went on to win all the remaining seven games to give the 1969 Raiders the best record of any BHS football team since 1934. Coach A1 Lefevre and his boys are truly to be congratulated on a job well done. Time out to talk with the coach. Junior Varsity is ready for action. 38 JV's support. Emotions Ran High At Football Games During a football game many emotions fill both players and spectators. There is the excitement as the team pushed forward completely dominating the opponent's defense. Tension mounts as the Raiders are pushed backwards or time runs out on an important play. At half-time the tention relaxes as the band and marching unit perform. As the half-time performance ends, the team is back on the field ready to go. Then there is the elation as the Raiders cross the goal line for six points. Once in a while despair sets in as the team can not stop the foe, and the Raiders go down in defeat. More often the team and spectators leave the field with that feeling that only victory can bring. Fire up! The crowd braved all kinds of weather to watch their Raiders play. There are many decisions to be made. 40 Another push for the goal line. Terry gains for BAHS. Touch down! All Involved Worked Hard A football game represents a lot of hard work by many people. The players have practiced long hours to develop their skills and merge their individual efforts into a solid team effort. Coaches have spent time directing this effort and teaching the fundamentals of the game. During the week the band and marching unit must prepare for the half-time show. But it is worth every bit of time and effort when we see our team bring another victory to BAHS. Just before half time. 41 A coach's job is tough. Cagers Displayed Great Ability First Row. Don't be afraid of a little ball. Fence!! Problems, coach?? The 1969-70 BHS Raider basketball team boasted one of the brightest stars to play for the Raiders in a long time. Senior Dick Fenstermaker, who has played outstanding basketball for the Blue Raiders for the last two years, built up a very impressive record for himself. Fence was twice voted to the All-District IX first team, and this year he finished second in the 9-A scoring race and was named the most valuable player of District IX as well. In addition. Fence set a number of new school records, including three new single-game rebounding and field-goal percentage in a single season. To top everything off, Fenstermaker was twice named the most valuable player in the Carbon City Tournament in St. Marys and this year he was chosen to play in the Altoona all-star game, where he took game scoring and rebounding honors and was named most valuable player. Fence is to be congratulated for building up such an impressive record for himself. As many people have said before, it's a long time between Fen-stermakers. The J.V. And Junior High Teams Showed Much Promise At Their Basketball Games The Junior-Varsity and Junior High basketball teams are the training grounds for the varsity squad. A basketball player starts out on Coach Le-fevre's junior high team, then moves up in about tenth grade to Mr. Sebring's JV team, where he plays and gains experience until he is ready to move up and join the Varsity Raiders. The JV and junior high teams put just as much time and effort as the varsity squad into learning to play the game well, so that when they have gained experience and moved up to the varsity team they can bring glory to BHS. The recipient of this honor is chosen by the members of the varsity basketball team. It is intended to honor the girl who shows the most school spirit and support for the team. Mike Wilson breaks down his man. By the end of his career a wrestler is usually familiar with blood, sweat, and sometimes, even tears. He must work hard at his sport and spends hours practicing such holds as the chicken wing and the guillotine. A wrestler must constantly watch his weight, and no girl on a diet could be more conscious of the addition of a few pounds. All of this effort goes to the six minutes he spends on the mat trying his best to pin his man. This year the Raiders had their best season with a record of nine wins. Brookville Man has a rough opponent. The score looks real good. John stacks up valuable riding time for Brookville. Grapplers Overpowered Their Opponents Grappler has his opponent all tied up. Strength, stamina, speed, and skill are all qualities found on the track team. Track is different from the other sports since it requires proficiency in several separate and completely different types of events. A team must have good sprinters and distance runners, both high and long jumpers, and pole vaulters. Events such as shot put, discus, and javelin throw are also included. Each individual must do his best on his own to make the team a success. A combination of winning individuals makes a winning team. The boys' team with Mr. Elder as coach and the girls' team under the direction of Mrs. Wiseman have both worked many days after school to prepare for their meets. Both teams try to represent BAH5 with the best showing possible. Running Broad Jump is a favorite for some. Parents are honored on Senior Day. District IX, Unlimited Champ, Doug Davis All Conference: Dick Fenstermaker, Bill Sebring, Hon. Mention: Bill Work. Sports Writers Team: Dick Fenstermaker, Bill Work, Hon. Mention: Bill Sebring. Several Brookville football players were honored this year when they were chosen to be on the All-Conference team. The members of this team are chosen by the coaches of the conference, so it is truly an honor to be a part of this team. Brookville should be proud of the six players who were voted to the All-Conference team and the three who received Honorable Mention. Brookville wrestling was honored when Doug Davis won the District IX Championship in the unlimited class. Doug is one of only a few district champs from Brookville, and he went on to take second place in the state finals. This is an accomplishment that both Doug and the school should feel proud of. Three members of the 1970 basketball team were honored by their selection for the Sports Writers' Team and the All-Conference team. Members of the Sports Writers' Team are chosen by the sports writers of the area, and the high school coaches vote for the players on the All-Conference team. This is a real honor for the boys who receive it. These awards justify to the quality of sports played at BAHS. comer Student Council Provided Student Government First kow: Jean Diener, Bruce Pierson, Mark McKinley, Chuck Manners, Suzanne Hepp, Tim Truman, Mrs. Receski, Ted Harriger, Penny Zimmerman, Mary Shugarts, Mark Kerr, Chuck Wonderling. The Student Council serves as the student government for BAHS. Its functions include regulating clubs and sales and running the student store. During the year the Council sponsored two movies which were shown to both junior and senior high students. The profits of its sales and book fair went toward the purchase of a victory flag to be flown after each athletic victory and to the Scholarship Fund. The highlight of Student Council's year came in April with the week of campaigning preceding the elections. After the campaign speeches and skits in the gymnasium, the votes were cast. Results showed the first girl as President since 1964. Mary Shugarts provides service with a smile. The Sub-Council is the junior high counterpart of Student Council. It holds elections and conducts meetings in the same way that Student Council does. The functions of Sub-Council include the regulation of clubs and sales. Members learn the techniques of representative government and become familiar with parliamentary procedure. The experience they gain will help them become active participants in Student Council and later in community affairs. Officers of sub-council prepare themselves for a meeting. By now most students are firmly settled in their extracurricular activities and in the programs they have chosen to prepare them for their future lives. Gone is the uncertainty of choosing a program of study that afflicted the student as a freshman and a sophomore; still ahead are the agonies of uncertainty about the future that will affect each student as a senior. In addition to their academic work, the juniors learn the meaning of unity and cooperation by working together on such projects as the annual magazine sale and the Junior-Senior Prom. Projects such as these help the junior to become a better individual in every way. The cooperation and organization learned by working on large projects help to build better citizens for tomorrow. For the first time courses such as art, industrial arts and home economics are electives, and some ninth graders are also given an opportunity to take biology instead of general science. The seventh grader enters a very new and very alien world. He enters a strange building to follow a strange schedule, and he is surrounded by strangers. All in all, the new world of the seventh grader can be something of a shock, but it forms the basis for lasting friendships. Many memories also come from the seventh grade year. The first pep rally, the first full-length movie on school time, participation in clubs, sports, and other activities grow out of the seventh grade year. We attend many classes which broaden our minds. Most classes coming out of BHS share some of these memories: working together as a class on such projects as the junior class magazine sale, the senior class spaghetti dinner, class plays and the prom; working with the entire school on musicals; going to New York to climax the senior year. But the Class of 1970 also has some memories of its own: the best football season since 1934 with a 7-2 record; the best wrestling season in BHS history with a 9-4-1 record; and the production of Oliver, to mention a few. More than these, though, are the many individual memories that each one of us will take with him, memories that are as varied and as individual as handwriting. Sharing memories with our classmates can be a lot of fun and very worthwhile, but our own individual experiences and memories are really what life is all about. The story concerned a patient in the Sanitarium for the Exceptionally Cheerful who discovered the power in an ugly face. Blithe Spirit , the junior class play, told of a man whose first wife was brought back from the dead. Her attempt to be reunited with her husband ended instead in the death of his second wife. The members of the casts worked hard to make the plays a success, and those who saw the performance enjoyed an entertaining evening. Student Council Elections Provided Valuable Experience Student Council elections are always one of the big events of spring. Students take special pleasure in thinking up new and better methods of campaigning for their favorites. The week before the election, no matter where you go, the walls are covered with posters proclaiming the virtues of each candidate. Every day the morning announcements bring several unpaid political announcements. The climax of activity comes at the election assembly when candidates give speeches and supporters hold demonstrations. These council elections not only provide a lot of fun, but valuable experience for future voters. Students supported their candidates with skits during the assembly. The School Musical Was A Smashing Success This is my box, all mine. 148 I d do anything for you. The whole cast β€” ready for the first performance of Oliver . So long, fare thee well, pip pip, cherio, but be back soon. Where is love? This year the students of BAH5 exibited their talents in their production of Oliver . This musical, based on the story of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, was directed by Mr. French, Mr. Reed, and Mr. D'Aurelio. Oliver was the story of an orphan and his search for love. After being a work-house boy, being sold to an undertaker, and finding brief happiness with Fagin's pickpocketers, Oliver finally finds love with his grandfather. Several months of hard work and practice went into the final production. Not only did the cast have to learn parts and music, but costumes, scenery, and props had to be readied, and sound and lighting arranged. When the whole show finally went on stage for three nights in March, both the cast and the audience were well pleased with the results. You've got to pick a pocket or two. 149 All aboard for New York City! Seniors Rallied To New York City On May 5, after many months of working, planning, and anticipating, the senior class boarded its buses and headed for New York City. During a stop at Harrisburg the seniors toured the Capitol building and the new William Penn Memorial Museum. At Hershey they toured the chocolate factory, rode the mono-rail, and lost the buses. After arrival at the Time Square Hotel, the seniors enjoyed a night-time view of the city from atop the Empire State Building. The next two days were filled with tours of the United Nations and NBC studios, rides on the subways, and visits to the Statue of Liberty and Radio City Music Hall. At the Music Hall the seniors watched the Easter pageant, the Rockettes, and the first run movie, Airport. Also included was a bus tour through Wall Street, Greenwich Village, the Bowery, and Chinatown. Leaving for Brookville at midnight, most seniors could agree that It's a nice place to visit, but we wouldn't want to live there. 150 Fence is all ready to start for N.Y.C. Students Spent An Enjoyable Evening In Venice The decoration of the gym . . . Music suited just for dancing . . . And crowning of the king and queen made the prom a success. The junior class worked hard in order to produce a successful prom. Many days were spent in making preparations, and by May 15 the juniors had transformed the gym into the city of Venice. The setting included a gondola, murals of the canals of Venice, and a pavillion for refreshments. Flower covered trellises and tables with checked table-clothes completed the effect. With their efforts, the juniors made it possible for many students at BAHS to enjoy an Evening in Venice. A tableful of students enjoy a rest from the dancing. On May 31 the Class of 1970 realized the completion of twelve years of education. The commencement exercises were the result of much effort on the part of the seniors. A student committee arranged the program and selected music. Student speakers presented their ideas on Faith, Hope, and Love. Other seniors recognized the parents and led the class in two choral readings. It was a proud moment for each of the 189 seniors when, after receiving his diploma, he heard the President of the School Board say I pronounce you graduates of Brookville Area High School and the graduate turned his tassel. It was a day never to be forgotten. Tim Truman reviews commencement procedures for Ron King The Seniors Were Part Of The New World Coming And we came ... in faith, hope, and love. 189 seniors anxiously await to receive their diplomas.
