THE SENIOR CLASS Presents THE 1956 ECHO BROOKVILLE HIGH SCHOOL BROOKVILLE PENNSYLVANIA ALMA MATER We sing to Brookville High School, The high school on the hill. The name that spurs us onward And makes our senses thrill. Hail! We’ll never forget our classmates. Our happy high school years: We raise our voice in hearty cheer To the school each one reveres. We pray that time will greet us As ever kind and strong; Forever we'll be loyal And sing our joyful song. Hail! When from the field we wander. When youth has passed us by. E’en then with fleeting breath We’ll praise our dear old Brookville High. 3 FOREWORD Every year, each senior class tries to improve its yearbook. Therefore, it is only natural that we, the Class of 1956, should endeavor to make our ECHO different from, and yet better than, the ones that have come before us. Because the yearbook is put out by the seniors and will, perhaps, be the most treasured memory of their senior year, it is only fitting that we should concentrate on it. We have added features which we felt were important to the seniors and eliminated other sections. Then, too, we tried to achieve uniformity with our senior pictures. For the first time in the history of Brookville High School, our senior girls wore the same costume for their yearbook pictures. None of this would have been possible, however, without financial suppon from the businessmen and patrons. We give special thanks to them. Appreciation is also extended to the printers, photographers, and engravers for their co-operation. We especially thank our sponsors, Mr. Ruffner and Miss Clyde. We feel that our yearbook is a success and we hope that you, the faculty, the future seniors of B. H. S., the school administration, and our parents and friends will agree that we have produced something which we can look back upon with pride. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication........................................................6 Favorite Teacher..................................................7 Class Sponsor.....................................................8 Class History....................................................10 Seniors..........................................................11 Administration...................................................28 Faculty..........................................................29 Juniors..........................................................34 Sophomores.......................................................36 Freshman.........................................................38 Eighth Grade.....................................................39 Seventh Grade....................................................40 Organizations....................................................44 Instrumental Music...............................................59 Vocal Music......................................................61 Football.........................................................66 Cheerleaders.....................................................69 Basketball.......................................................71 Class Prophecy...................................................78 Senior Writeups..................................................81 Advertising......................................................85 5 We, the class of 1956, feel that our dedication should be given to one of our unsung heroes, Without him we would be minus a friend and a conscientious custodian. Herb Weirick has looked after the aches and pains of Brookville High School for ten years, and we feel that he has been an essential part of our high school experience. Many a day was brightened by Herb's friendly smile and cheery Hello. Then, too, all of us will remember his many responses to our emergencies. No matter what time of day it was. Herb was always working hard, trying to make our school a more pleasant place in which to work. We thank you, Herb, for helping to make our memories of B.H.S. pleasant ones, and most of all, thanks for being a friend to us all. 6 DEDICATION The class of 1956 chose Wayne Wolford not only because he was our favorite teacher, but because we regarded him as a friend and confidant. We knew that we could always depend on him when it came time to find a sponsor for some pet project, or when we needed advice concerning our problems--whether they were social, scholastic, or personal. In our class, his humor brightened even the most dismal days. When we weren't giving news reports, we were usually in deep meditation. Therefore, not only from the members of the Ushers Club and the Student Council, but also from the entire senior class, we extend our heartfelt appreciation for Mr. Wolford. FAVORITE TEACHER 7 OUR CLASS SPONSOR Words cannot express our deep feeling of gratitude for Mrs. Butler. As our junior English teacher, she worried because our grammar was bad or because our book reports weren't complete. As our sponsor, her headaches included howto raise money and how to decorate the gymnasium for the prom. When we became seniors, it seemed as if we needed her help and advice even more. First came the problem of what the girls should wear for their pictures, and then where we should go on our senior trip. Any credit for a successful prom, banquet, or class play, must be given to Mrs. Butler, for without her support and perseverance none of it would have been possible. In leaving, the class of nineteen hundred and fifty six is very proud of its accomplishments, but more proud of its sponsor, Mrs. Elizabeth Butler. 8 ■.v.v.v mm ■ Ma SENIORS CLASS HISTORY When we first entered senior high school in 1951, little did we realize what lay before us. We started things rolling by electing Bob Pence as our president and leader. We became a major part of high school when we were initiated by the juniors. Remember the pie pans we had to wear on our heads, and how tired we were after having to bow all day? Our biggest problem was our sophomore carnival. We came through, however, for we made the most money that a sophomore class had ever taken in up to that time. Some of the pleasant memories we have of the carnival are: Jack Guth s miniature golf that took him all week to set up, the success of the baby chicks, and what a mess it was to clean up afterwards. We became juniors, and our obstacles included the class play and, as a climax, our banquet and prom. The play cast spent many long evenings rehearsing their parts. At the performances they were superb. None of us will ever forget Bob Pence as the butler and Kent Kunselman as Rodney, the invalid. Then, in April, we began our preparations for the prom and banquet. What a fuss we made when we were told that we would have to have our prom in the big gymnasium. The decorating committee debated and argued for weeks on what the theme would be. Remember how we laughed at John McNeil's space ship idea? And will we ever forget how Mr. Wolford argued that wecouldn t possibly have a fountain? On the big night, we were proud as peacocks lor we knew that we had one of the most successful proms ever staged at Brookville High School. As seniors, our yearbook was our biggest project. We were determined that it should be one ol the nicest ever published. We also had to decide what color our caps and gowns would be. and where we would go on our senior trip. We still had much to look forward to, for soon we would be guests of honor at the prom and banquet given for us by the juniors. After May, we would no longer be a part of B. H. S. We will take our places in the world as teachers, mothers and fathers, doctors, and laborers. The road of life is a never ending one. There is always a need for artists, mathematicians, and literary experts on the staff. The ECHO of 1956 is a whopper of a job. Many, many details have gone into the making. The yearbook staff has worked long and hard to make it one of the best books that the school has published yet. The Editorial Committee of the yearbook has to see that the book is laid out correctly. There are many other responsibilities, too. The members have been working exceptionally hard to make the 1956 ECHO the best. They have done a great job. We, the class of 1956, should be proud of them for the splendid job which they have done. EDITORIAL COMMITTEE SEATED: Jayne Stahlman, Tom Haskell, Carl Yates. Through the Student Council, opportunity for student cooperation and participation in management of school affairs is provided. Learning for citizenship and intelligent leadership through the development of cooperation, self-control, self-reliance, initiative and responsibility is one of the major objectives. Each year, four sophomores are elected to the Council as permanent members. In addition to the permanent members, home room representatives are elected to the Council for one year terms. Over the years, the Student Council has grown both in power and faculty support. This organization is the connecting link between the students and the faculty. 47 SENIOR HONOR SOCIETY Membership in the National Honor Society is the highest honor which a student in high school may attain. Scholarship alone will not open the door for membership. To scholarship must be added: Service, leadership, and character. Only fifteen per cent of the membership of a graduating class may be elected to this organization. SEATED: Tom Haskell, Bob Pence. The boys who accomplished this were very sports-minded and wanted a club which only the boys who had obtained letters in the sports field could belong. Today there are twelve boys in the Varsity Club. These boys take charge of running the concession stand during basketball season. With the profit they make during the school year, they purchase Varsity jackets for themselves. Chuck Keough has served the office of president. The Vice President, Howard Corbin; the Secretary, Bill Green; the Treasurer, John McNeil. The head football coach, Robert Walker, served as sponsor of the Club. Last year, the Commercial Club was formed to replace the Future Business Leaders of America. The purpose of the club is to bring in outside speakers from the business world and to take field trips to various local business offices. This helps to prepare the Commercial students for their future careers. Membership is limited to Senior Commercial students. Meetings are held on the last Friday of every month in place of Business English Class. Band, which consists of eighty well trained musicians, has provided a dashing note of color to many activities in Brookville. Also, the band has boosted the morale of the players at football and basketball games and has given the spectators greater enthusiasm. Some of the events the band members will long remember, especially the twenty-four seniors, are: Penn State Band Day, Spring Concert, Sesqui-Centennial, first night football game in Brookville. This term, the band is under the guidance of Jon McNeil, president; Virginia Eshbaugh, Librarian; Marge White, Historian; Sandra McManigle, head majorette; Dick Cochran, DanFiscus, Bob Kingman, Gordon Finnecy, Managers; Russie Park, Chaplain; and our superb director, Mr. Neuhard. All the members of the band, including the band front and our strutting drum major. Bob Pence, have endeavored to please the fans during the year. We praise the band for their diligence, hard work, and achievement. Band Officers ROW 1; Gordon Finnecy. ROW 2: John McNeil, Virginia Eshbaugh, Marge White. This year, the fifteen members were an essential part of the exchange programs. Their other activities included playing at dances, assemblies, and at other functions for which a dance band was needed. The Top Hatters will lose three members this year, and therefore we are looking forward to next year, and more music from them. Let music fill the air is a fitting motto for one of our dance bands, the Star Dusters. This group was formed nearly two and a half years ago. It has in its repertoire of music some one hundred songs. The Star Dusters have played for many dances. Some of these are: The Vet’s Club, Junior High Prom, The Grange and the Y dances. Their many hours of practice are appreciated by the students of B.H.S. We thank the Star Dusters for bringing pleasure through music into our school life.
