Grade school, high school, a Graduation exercise — all A part of your own life. Then comes the time when You must choose your pathway— And, whether it be sunny and bright, or Dull and dreary, your pathway Cannot be changed once it is chosen. Yes, this life is yours to do with as you please; Your life is a pathway of many things, and Everything you do—right or wrong—adds Another turn to it. Then, as you near the end of your climb, You may turn around and look back upon your pathway And see your moments of sunshine, sorrow, and Bliss; your pathway may soon end, and Another will begin, so take one last Look behind you and realize the value of “Your Pathway.” —Betty JEAN HoLianp Crass oF ’65 Pecet we ee NA ee ce - = we Ye Nee’ é fas NE Couteuts THE ADMINISTRATION... . Page 103, Dedccattou The 1964 BUZZER staff proudly dedicates this, the thirty-seventh edition of the BUZZER to Mr. Kelly Shoe- maker, who has opened to us many new pathways in our Music Department. Since his coming to Brookville five years ago, Mr. Shoemaker has given us an outstanding band and chorus, of which we can all be rightfully proud. In addition to these accomplish- ments, Mr. Shoemaker has served as our baseball coach for the past two years. His tireless gifts of time, energy, and talent have endeared him to every student and teacher at Brookville, and we wish to show him our appreciation for his friendship and guid- ance by dedicating the 1964 : es BUZZER to him. URQUHART We Present For the three years that Mr. Urquhart has been our principal, his leadership and encouragement have opened new pathways of opportunity for the students of Brook- ville. He has set high ideals which, to his followers, are a clear challenge to succeed in all they do. His ideas are welcomed by students and faculty alike, who are looking for- ward to many productive years under his able guidance. Mr. WILLIAM WRIGHT Probably the most beloved and most written about personality at Brookville is our assistant principal, Mr. Wright. “Willie” is the best friend of every stu- dent, the support of every teacher, and the originator of every “little deal” at B.H.S. In addition to his administrative duties, Mr. Wright serves as an advisor to the Senior Class, sponsor of the Fo- rensic Club, and S.C.A. advisor. This sale, annual project of the Senior Class, helps finance the graduation trip to New York. There is an added attraction for the class this year, for the 1964 World’s Fair is being held in New York. Other highlights of the year were the never-to-be-forgotten Senior Day, College Career Day in Rustburg, the Senior Play, and the Junior-Senior Prom. This year, the Latin Club, un- der the leadership of Mrs. Mary Lee Wood and Paulette Overfelt, adopt- ed its first constitution and inducted several honorary members, including students in the third-year Latin class taught at Brookville for the first time. Each year the Latin Club spon- sors Latin Week, during which mem- bers of the club make exhibits and posters, climaxed by the Roman Ban- quet, a main social event each spring it Brookville. Latin Week and the banquet both carry out the motto of the Latin Club, “Latin Lives To- day.” French Club members enjoy the annual ban- quet which is the highlight of the French Club’s yearly activities. Brookville’s newly formed French Club meets every third Wednesday to better acquaint themselves with the culture and customs of France. Part of the annual program, and most enjoyable to older members, is the initiation. Although it is one of the smallest clubs in the school, it is probably the most democratic. After ten weeks of hard playing, the Bees have captured their second football championship in the history of the ‘school for the second straight year. In 1963 season was supposedly a rebuild- ing year for the Bees, but early in the pre-season practice sessions, the team began to show great potentiality. In the opening game, the Bees defeated James River High 18-0 in a non-conference tilt. The following week, the Bees faced their first conference foe, Nelson County. Although Nelson had been given high rating as the possible champions, the Bees came away with a 13-0 victory. When the Bees faced Amherst High in the third game, their hopes for their second straight championship had begun to rise, but the game, ending in a 6-6 tie, proved to be a big set-back for them. The Bees’ hopes were running high again by the time they were to play the all-important game with Appomat- tox. The two mighty teams clashed on the Brookville field, and a 13-13 tie was the dis- appointing result. The Bees were left with four more games to play, and they had to win them all to capture the championship Brookville racked uv two of these victories during the next two games, defeating Bros- ville 27-6, and Roanoke Catholic 19-0. The next game was the decisive one of the season. Appomattox had dropped out of the picture for possible champions, for they had lost all their games since they tangled with Brook- ville. But Altavista had moved into first place with no conference losses or ties. The Brookville-Altavista game was played in rain and ankle-deep mud. But the Bees overcame these handicaps beautifully and defeated Altavista 7-6. The championship was clinched when the Bees defeated Wil- liam Campbell 27-6 in the final game.
