There has never been an occasion that these projects have not been over- whelmingly supported by our community. Two activities sponsored by the classes which would have been impossible if the community had not been most responsive, were the Donkey Basketball Games and the Junior Play. [19 ] SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Freshman Year 1953-54 The year of 1953 was one of the greatest years this school has ever known because the doors of Brook- ville High School were now open to ninety-seven energetic freshmen who were already familiar with the school, its students, its rules and regulations, and its community affairs. Because we were the first eighth graders, we were fortunate enough to have realized by now the importance of studying and working towards being honor students. To guide us along our way were Mrs. Carroll, Mrs. McKenry, Mr. Tucker, and Mr. Hugh B. Jack- son, our principal. As our class officers we chose Jimmy Overacre, President; Lois Beale, Vice-President; Barbara Hudson, Secretary; and Jerry Hartless, Treasurer. Before we had time to realize it, the second semes- ter had come to a close and summer vacation was upon us once again. Sophomore Year 1954-’55 In September, 1954, because of overcrowded conditions here at Brookville, twenty-six members of our proud Sophomore Class were transferred to the new high school at Rustburg. Jimmy Overacre, Earl Thomp- son, Malcolm Trent, and Marjorie Hudson were elected as class officers. A large per cent of the class eagerly participated in the school’s extracurricular activities, and we are happy to say that four girls in our class played on the basketball team which was undefeated this year. They were Linda Smith, Gaynell Miear, Betty Eagle, and Ann Drumheller. With the careful guidance and encouragement of our sponsors, Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Smart, we managed to successfully complete our second link toward Graduation Day. Junior Year 1955-56 Booming voices and the patter of big feet could be heard echoing through the halls of B.H.S. as fifty-two lighty Juniors resumed their class activities. Because there were few seniors, we were given the privilege of having the former senior sponsors, Mrs. Quigley and Mr. Wright, as our co-pilots for the year. We also were given the opportunity to attend the annual football game at Charlottesville. Our class officers were Jimmy Overacre, Earl Thompson, Louis Kiger, and Jane Temples. March 6, the day we received our class rings , was a memorable one, and the Junior-Senior Dance in the Brookville gym was also a red letter day on our calendar. Senior Year 1956-57 Forty-seven mighty Seniors graced the halls of Brookville in September, 1956. Once again we were fortunate to have the same leaders, as Mrs. Quigley and Mr. Wright resumed their former roles as Senior sponsors. Presiding over our class were Jimmy Overacre, President; Earl Thompson, Vice-President; Martha Proehl, Secretary; and Lois Beale, Treasurer. Our school colors, maroon and gray, were chosen as our class colors, and a velvet rose was chosen as our flower. Our first activity was a trip to Charlottesville to see the football game between the University of Virginia and V.M.I. When the first semester exams were over, fourteen deserving seniors were proud to learn that they were to be honor graduates the following June. They were: David Wright, Valedictorian; Ann Drumheller, Salutatorian; Earl Thompson, Jimmy Overacre, Sara Webb, Loretta Layne, Lois Beale, Phyllis McCormick, Thomas Bruffy, Jane Temples, Andee Crawley, Marjorie Hudson, Linda Smith, and Lynda Powell. Our senior candidates, Neal Maddox and Linda Smith, were crowned as HOMECOMING KING AND QUEEN by Mr. William E. Wright. The seniors were invited by the Juniors to the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom which was held on March 16. This was an occasion to be remembered by everyone. Our Senior Play, “Dear Ruth,” was another big activity on our list. This comedy in two acts was a new experience for us as we had not been permitted to sponsor a Junior Play. In May our class took the annual Senior Trip. The privilege of being the first class from Brookville to go to New York was greatly appreciated and is a memory that will linger with us always. As we look back over our four high school years we find that a few of our members have been outstanding in some of the school’s activities. Ann Drumheller and Jimmy Overacre have been two of the winners in the Forensic Debating Con- test here at school for the past four years and in the district for two years. Louis Kiger, Neal Maddox, Earl Thompson, Jimmy Ware, and Allen Wright have played first string on the basketball team for the past two years, and have done an excellent job for the school’s fame. Finally came our Commencement, which was held on June 6, 1957. As we closed the doors of Brookville behind us and looked for doors yet to be opened, each of us thought of our class motto, “Not finished; just begun.” SENIOR DIRECTORY LOIS BEALE: BuZZER Staff 2 years; Newspaper Staff, 1 year; Vice-President of Freshman Class; Treasurer of Senior Class. CLASS PROPHECY Commencement Exercises of 1967 We find seated in the audience with us tonight many of the former graduates of Brookville High School. Among them are the familiar faces of those who graduated in the year of 1957 and who are now taking their places in various community activities. To the right we see six graduates of Virginia Polytechnic Institute: namely: JIM FITCH, JIMMY OVERACRE, JAMES WATSON, ALLEN WRIGHT, EARL THOMPSON, and DAVID WRIGHT. They now operate their own joint-engineering firm and have as their secretaries LOIS BEALE, MARJORIE HUD- SON, CHARLOTTE WEEKS, and .PHYLLIS McCORMICK. LOUIS KIGER, also a V. P. I. graduate, hopes to be coaching a better basketball team at B. H. S. next year. His wife, the former JANE TEMPLES, is coaching the girls’ team. Who is this distinguished person now entering the door? It is STANLEY NAPIER, recently released from the navy where he piloted his own ship, the S. S. Deaton. He will soon return to his former job at RCA Victor recording studio. There comes DR. NEAL MADDOX, and with him are his nurses) ULLA MARKHAM and ANDEE CRAWLEY. They seat themselves by MALCOLM TRENT, who, I hear, has just completed pharmaceutical study and soon expects to open his own drug store. I am anxiously glancing around the auditorium to catch a glimpse of several visiting celebrities who had promised to be present. There sits JIMMY WARE, head of the Ware Construction Company in New York, and his wife, the former BETTY EAGLE. They are in town on a big business deal. ANN DRUM- HELLER, head of Virginia Institute of Music, has just come up with a brilliant new idea of manufacturing longer tonettes. LYNDA POWELL, because she has recently moved to Kentucky, was unable to be with us tonight. However, we may mention the fact that she owns the best thoroughbred horses in the country. Seated among the faculty are LORETTA LAYNE, GLADYS CRAWFORD, and SARA WEBB, as well as two of its newest members, PEGGY SCHMITT and JO ANN LEECH, who have recently completed training as home economics instructors. Seated behind them is NAOMI FITZGERALD, dramatics teacher at Lynchburg College. Later I hope to talk with MERLYN PROEHL, a dairy expert, now conducting surveys on the farms of JOHN McCONVILLE, WAYNE WIRT, and BURLEIGH NEWMAN. Tomorrow I must visit REED FIELD, owner of a cabinet and linoleum shop, and RAWLIN CLINGEMPEEL, a prominent upholsterer. They are now designing fixtures for MARTHA and DUVAL’S new home. They have also done work in the homes of VIRGINIA HIGHT JENNINGS and SHIRLEY B RYANT KEESEE. RONALD HENDRICKS, with the financial aid of THOMAS BRUFFY, the community banker, is now opening a new super market. The MIEARS have turned the management of their store over to RUSSELL and PEGGY. By the way, MR. WRIGHT has recommended JOHN WILKERSON and ED NUCKLES as expert mechanics. They recently overhauled his ’50 Chevrolet. I now see three very familiar faces over to my left. They are LINDA MAYHEW, GAYNELL ENGLE- DOVE, and BARBARA ENGLEDOVE. I hear their new homes are the latest word in decoration and furnish- ings. Finding a newspaper in the seat next to me, I read on the front page that JOE LANKFORD has been made Vice-President of the A. B. Burton Construction Company. Glancing over the sports page, I see that ED TOMLINSON, head football coach at Notre Dame, has been named as All-American. The familiar strains of the processional march focuses my attention on the black and white robed figures of the graduates of 1967. Tonight I shall live again the graduation exercises of 1957.
