GERALD WRENN BES, ALLAROUND ay SELBERT MYERS BEST ATHITUDE - HENRY BIBB WOST POPULAR BOY CLASS HISTORY Our class history begins back in 1931 when 40 eager, bright eyed youngsters entered the first grade under Miss Virginia Perkins and Miss Margarette Abbott. Of these, 10 have continued in school and are now seniors together this year. They are: C. D. Cress, Malcolm Driskill, Christine Ashwell, Maxine Bell, Elizabeth Brown, Mabel J. Copal, Irene Daniel, Helen deJarnette and Carrie Lee Robertson. From time to time as we came through grade school, members of our class dropped out, but others were added who have stayed with us to be graduated this year. In the second grade Charlie Peters, Jr., and George Salmon were added to our number. Lois Wells and Charles D. Mattox, our senior class president, joined our group in the third grade. Little did we realize when we were in the fourth grade that our teacher, Miss Martha Gunter, would be our teacher for our senior year too. In the fourth grade, Harry Johnson and Doris Reams were added to our list. When. we reached the fifth grade we felt as if we were almost grown. This year Henry B ibb started to school at Brookville. In the seventh grade we added Harold Hockett and Iris Arthur. The eighth grade! We were in high school! Now we were indeed grown young ladies and gentlemen. We soon found out however, that we were merely “rats” and were expected to be seen and never heard. Our teachers, Miss Wilson and Miss Garner, did their best to help us adjust ourselves. We realized that many new faces were among us, and we soon had made new friends. This year the following students came to Brookville from Mountain View, Forest Hili and Tyreanna: Eugene Austin, Rudolph Elder, Lewis Falwell, Garland Ferrell, Gerald Foster, Lile Guill, Roy Hall, L. W. Pickeral, Mae Almond, Dorothy Coalson, Frances Couch, Margaret Deacon, Eliza- beth Epperson, Lucille Hall, Alice Hill, Edith Hauswirth, Dorothy Mayberry, Dorothy Parcell, Jean Trent and Dorothy Yeatts. The nineteen who came up from the seventh grade were joined by twenty-nine from our neighbor schools. We began our sophomore year, forty-six strong. Miss Fauntleroy and Miss White were our teachers. This year we found out that French and Latin were just as hard as the juniors warned us they would be. We gave the freshmen a skating party which was very successful. We also found out that ““X”’ can be made to stand for anything, but that it would not give you an “A” if you didn’t know what it did stand for. The fall of 1940 and we were juniors! We were so proud of ourselves, for now we were next to the seniors. Miss Parker, our teacher, told us that we acted more like first graders than juniors. Our junior play went over with a “bang.” We even were asked to give it over for Fort Hill Church. | The Junior-Senior banquet for which we talked about, planned for and bought new clothes for, was really the event. of the year. It was the pride and joy of every junior. We were grieved, however, for this year we lost one of our loved members, Robert Bomar. Then we ordered our rings and we realized that we were almost ready to start on the last lap of our school career. The fall of 1941, at last we were Seniors! The long awaited time was here and we added one member:to our list, Leland Hubbell. We thought we were our own masters and masters of the school. Miss Gunter soon dispelled this idea, and we found out that now more than ever we must conduct ourselves properly. She told us that responsibility goes along with senior privileges. We had hardly started before Decem- ber 7th when Pearl Harbor shocked us all into realizing that we were almost grown and must soon take our places in the great struggle ahead. The class had eight players on the basketball team, and what a team that was! After winning the district champion- ship, we entered the state tournament at Charlottesville. Again sorrow came to our class in the death of another member, Courtney Harris, Jr. The big event of the year was the organization of the Bee Club to which seven seniors have been elected so far. Our annual promises to be bigger and better than ever, and we have enjoyed soliciting ads, taking pictures, etc., for it. Thus our history is to date. Now we are working on.our senior play, “Lena Rivers,” for which the characters were announced March 27th. We are bringing money for announcements, too. Therefore, we realize that high school days are almost over, and thirty-nine strong we are on the last stretch to our first goal in life, graduation. —CHARLIE PETERS, JR., Historian. Ree eee «THE 1942 BUZZER JUNIORS’ HISTORY High School at Last! More than half of our Juniors of nineteen-forty-two entered in during the grammar grades or during the Freshman year. We were eighty-seven strong and Miss Wilson and Miss Rusher had a “tough” time trying to teach two classes of “Rats” to act their age or at least try to. We felt that we had gotten somewhere when we were permitted to change classes. Miss Wilson often found in her Science class a number of students think- ing they were taking Math or History. Even if we did end up in the wrong room sometimes we enjoyed having a variety in our teachers. Betty Bibb was often reminded that she should learn the “four fundamental operations” of Mathematics instead of reading her book in Mr. Hicks’ fourth period Math class. Sophomores now! Our number has decreased to sixty. Separated into two classes again, but more calm now we still kept Miss White and Miss Fauntleroy on their toes. Since Mr. Cauley refused to let the girls take Agriculture they settled down to take Home Economics under Miss Rusher. The newly painted walls were often stained with ink, but we all promised Alfred Langford that we would never tell. The S. C. A. minstrel was a great event since many of our Sophomores took part. We were all amazed at our pretty little pickaninny, Georgia Isaacs, who held tightly to her doll of the same color. , Juniors! Forty-seven in number. Sophisticated? Why no, of course not. We do feel a bit proud of our achievement and Miss Fauntleroy and Mr. Hicks made us feel more so. Commercial rooms were crowded—secretaries?, Many of them, but they soon found it wasn’t all play and no work. March 13, Friday the thir- teenth, proved to be very lucky for us. We gave our play, The Valley of Ghosts and discovered a lot of hidden talent. Nadine Wrenn proved to be an excellent lunatic, Betty Bibb learned to shoot a “horse pistol,’ Herbert 3rooks made a grand ghost, and others helped to make it a success. The proceeds to be used to sponsor the Junior and Senior Banquet. We are proud of the fact that five of our Juniors are charter members of The Bee Club—Kathleen Bagby, Betty Bibb, Ted Bell, Mary Rorer and Jack McDonald. We now know that it takes hard work to become a senior. Here is a broadcast of the county track meet direct from the Lynchburg Stadium. “Good morning, folks, this is John Tell-It-All, your news and | sports reporter. I see that today is going to be a hot one, so you had better get some Super-Cool Sunburn Lotion. I believe some of the dashes a have been run, so we'll get over and see what will be next. Well, I believe | we're ready for the girls’ 80-yard dash. All lined up now! Coach Wyatt has his cap pistol ready to shoot. They’re off! Gosh, folks, there’s some | tall, lanky Agriculture teacher from Brookville in front of me and I ¢) can’t see how the race is going, but we'll get the returns in just a second. What did you say, Miss White? Good! Evelyn Nash won first place. “Listen, who is that yelling, ‘Ice cold drinks, get them while they are hot °° Why, it’s Henry Bibb—glad to know his voice is good for some- thing. Now let’s get back to the track events. Ronald Carey won third place in the Class ‘C’ dash. Now it’s time for the hundred-yard dash. There goes the gun, and here comes Elder. Another first place. Time, 10.3 seconds. I wish that old lady in the black hat would please get off the field. Excuse me, folks, it’s Miss White in her landlady’s hat. Someone’s in the right church but the wrong pew! No! It’s just Chick Elder in his red pajamas. Someone just handed me some reports—Shelor won third in high jump; Clowdis second in Class ‘B’ high jump; Worley didn’t show up, so Myers tossed the shot put and won second too, and Elder won broad jump.’ | “Time out for dinner. Let’s go up to the stand for something to eat. The ‘Bee Club’ is selling, so we won’t get stung. Now back to the track events. Girls’ relay team won first. Now the boys’ team is ready. Krantz, Hubbell, Wood and Elder won first. Well, its time for me to stop this, because every time I open my mouth I feel like Moses (the Bull ru shes). “John Tell-It-All signing off.
