I S I95 We, as students of Brookville High School, open our doors and invite you to come walk with us on a tour of our school. You will be guided by the members of the staff of this book. We invite you to see who we are and how we work and play. We want you to hear what goes on behind the closed door of a classroom or the teachers' lounge, at a class or organization meeting, or in the cafeteria line. We want you to share in the joy of our approaching graduation, the anxiety be- fore a play, the pride we have in our accomplishments. Yes, come walk with us through a year of our life, preserved now only in our memories and, in years to come, through this book, 51150 , Senior Editor , Junior Editor W TABLE of CONTENTS sm fi? + KJQQQLQ Wang A5Z'M'2'L?XwgE JM00 01174515 WL '24 ' -f U: E? Those issuing such an invitation should know where they are going and be sure they are traveling in the right direction, The twelve years of schooling which the class has just completed has been designed to guide the students along the right route and prepare them as thoroughly as possible for the journey. How well this has been done depends upon the seriousness of purpose of the students, the efficiency of the school system, and the dedicated efforts of the various teachers who have exerted their influence over the course of the years. We hope it has been done well The school is, however, only one of the agencies responsible in this endeavor. The other two great institutions, the church and the home, have perhaps exerted a still more powerful influence. Of course, in the last analysis, students, teachers, and parents alike must depend upon something beyond human power for guidance. William Cullen Bryant expressed it thus: He who from zone to zone 1 at Guides through the sky thy certain flight Will, in the long way that I must tread alone, Guide tny steps aright. Z J , MARY LORENZ C Secretary ..,mQ Qr gr , - ,safe ft 1-.,-av , MR. AND MRS. GEORGE MC KJNNEY and family - at home THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKS MARILYN RCBENBERGER S6CI'eI3.I'Y Come, walk with us through thehalls and classrooms and participate in the activities of our school is a well-chosen theme for the 1957 Brooklet, for I am sure all of you will in your memory go over the year many times. As you look through this edition of the Brooklet, you should be re- minded of the worthwhile activities in which you engaged during 1956-57. Some of you will probably recall your failure to achieve the success which might have been yours, with a longing to go back and do better. Father Time, however, will follow you relentlessly. As he does, you will gain not only in age but also in experience and knowledge. This pursuit of you by Father Time will cause you to re-evaluate 1956-57 many times. However, as you change your evaluations and mellow with age, Ihope that most of you will look back on 1956-57 as one of the grandest years of all. 5. Its work is carried on at monthly meetings and by standing committees. The purpose of this organization is to bring the teachers of this school into closer relation- shipg to establish and maintain conditions essential to the best teaching serviceg to secure for its members the social, intellectual, and professional advantages that can be derived from co- operation: and to create in the community at large a deeper sense of interest which the teachers represent. During the school year 1956-57, the organization has held two social functions. A picnic was held at the beginning of the year so that teachers old and new could get acquainted. A dinner party was held a short time before Christmas. The fact that all teachers of this school have become members seems to indicate that they believe the B, C. T, A, to be a worthwhile organization. Y . f! 14' Q 6 XC, President .... ,------W.....----- Yfeig..--,-lf,1i::r:fA-M -:F STLIDE T GOVER ME T Students in Brookville High School are privileged to have a form of student government through which they can express their ideas and wishes. The Student Cotmcil is the voice of the students in matters dealing with changes in school policy. Also, the many activities the high school participates in on a student level are carried out by the Student Council. Each year the Student Council organizes into several standing committees. It is through these committees that much of the routine work i.n the school is accomplished. The bookstore and the information desk are two examples of the work carried on by standing committees. The largest and most important of the standing committees is the Ethics Committee, Meet- ing independently ofthe Student Council, the Ethics Committee guides and counsels students who are continually disobeying school rules. Another of the major activities of the Ethics Committee is the Church Attendance check it has made in recent years, Members of the Student Council and Ethics Committee are elected from the student body and it is through the work of these students that the many things the student body expects are accomp- lished. nywfwfcl fffjvt, President . r' ' I s, 'cm OFFICERS: Ron Hofer, President, Seniorg Paul Otto, Vice-President, J uniorg Janet Evans, Secretary, Senior. For us, the care- free good ole days are gone. Come walk with us back over our four years to the events which are now only memories. Our freshman year was led by Ron Hofer, President, Ron Jones, Vice-Presidentg Yvonne Lea, Secretary, and Marty Burkhart, Treasurer. We shall never forget our money- making project, the paper drive. Clt took three baths to remove all the dirt., On a very chilly day, wewent to Coney Island for our class party. The trip put aches into our feet and took money from our pockets. Our three sponsors were: Mrs. Hine- sley, Mr. Davis, and Mr. Downey. In our sophomore year, Mr. Downey left us and was replaced by Mr. Ernst, who, along with Mrs. Hinesley and Mr. Davis, led us through the rest of our high school life. We were the first class in BHS to order class sweaters. We sponsored a Chili Supper that year, Cwater glasses and alll. Again our class went to Coney Island where we had a hot time. Ron Hofer was elected President for the yearg Ed Hollenbach, Vice-President, Janet Evans, Secretary: and Marty Burkhart, Treasurer. As juniors, our goal as upper classmen was finally realized. The long-awaited class rings came just in time for Christmas. To keep the Double-Date rings or go steady was a problem that confronted the juniors boys. Our successful Chicken Supper was followed by our class play, titled Stars in Their Eyes, f and tears tool. Officers were Ron Hofer, President, Calvin Finch, Vice-President, Rita Esarey, Secretaryg and Loris Conner, Treasurer. At long last, we were seniors, the big wheels of BHS, but is wan't all fung for the year held much work yet to be done. Bill Rtmyon led us through our senior year. assisted by Calvin Finch, Vice-Presidentg Marty Burkhart, Secretaryg and Glenna Venter, Treasurer. Our play Lucky Penny, presented at the beginning of the year, wasconsidered one of the best in BHS history. The se.n.ior Chicken Supper added S558 to the balance of our class treasury. This year was also the most expensive, we ordered name cards, senior pictures, caps and gowns, and invitations. Baccalaureate, Commencement, and the Washington trip complete our high school career, after which we will not have forgotten our school but will be- come alumni of BHS. I J i T 1 ' UNDERCLASSMEN Come walk with us through our cafeteria line. HIGH SPIRIT IS YOUR STORY. THE NEWS 1'1 PRINTS IS THE NEWS YOU MAKE. The B. High Spirit made its first appearance, January 1, 1921, Since then, we have advanced from a circulation of 200, to 850 copies. To learn how our paper comes into being, here is the process it and we go through, ever two weeks. First, the facts of a story must beobtained. Reporter Anna Lewis is accomplishing this, as she interviews Mr, Zuck's secretary, Mary Lorenz, Glenna Venter, ably assisted by Peth Preston and Carolynn Clinton, demonstrates the nerve shattering job of typing the story. Each issue must be planned, as Co-Editors Bill Runyon and Shirleen Estridge portray. The type-written copy is sent to Conners- ville, where it is made into proof. A group of Journalism students correct mis-spelled words and errors, which are usually present on the proof sheets. Coinciding with proof reading, the dummy is being pasted up, by, Joyce Tinch and Gloria Hale, who are the managers of this sticky job. After the dtunmy is completed, back to Connersville it goes, and returns this time in 850 copies. The papers are folded and then dis- tributed to the students. Our down town routes are distributed by our circulation staff, shown starting from the school. - The B, High Spirit is now in its thirty-sixth year of publication We hope to bring you the news firsthand for many more years to come. S' X1 . A. A. ACTI ITIE There are three ways a girl may earn points for an award in G.A.A. They may be earned for unorganized sports, skill tests, and organized sports. Every Tuesday and Thursday noon hour is devoted to organized sports. In G. A.A. there are five seasons. The first is softball and individual or partner sports such as ping pong, bad minton, shuffleboard, tennis, and horseshoe. The second season is basketball Teams are chose.n and two games played each Tues- day and Thursday, Square dancing is the next activity. Square dancing sets may be made up of girls from any class, Volleyball follows with class teams com- peting. The last sport of the year is track, For participation in any or all of these sports, a girl earns ten points for each sport played. To earn extra points a girl may play unorganized sports. If she plays each of three sports for one-half hour each week for six weeks out of a nine weeks period, she receives five points for each sport. Hiking, dancing, bi- cycling, basketball, softball, and tumbl- ing are a few of the many unorganized sports. Extra points may be eamed by skill tests. These are taken on special testing days or outside school hours. Five or ten Points, depending on the test, can be earned in this manner for each test. However, points for only five skill tests can be earned each year, The first award given in G.A.A, is the G.AA. pin for seventy-fivepoints. The second is the silver basketball for one hundred fifty points, given only to a sophomore, junior, or senior. The third is the letter and ntunerals for two hlmdred fifty points, given only to juniors and seniors. Chevrons may be earned for additional points. The last award is the state award for three hundred fifty points, including ten skill tests. i.... HN f-E7 U NN LC I1 9 '. . 53 O Wyomi PRCDJEC CJR LUB IN FRONT: G, Amrhein, .T . Sauerland, E. Wiwi.
