Tire BREE7r time that he tried to have a few mrnutes to himself she bothered him First rt was asking hrm to fix the arm of her doll next It was to fill the woodbox when he had so many other things to do and he didnt see why his mother made him ill rt anyhow Why couldnt Eliza instead of playing all day long9 Eddle Eddie' ' The vorce was gettrng nearer He had better go out and see what she wanted Wrth a frown that would have frrghtened Joan Holland rf she had seen rt and walk ing with as far frown a drgnrfred walk as could be he strode across across the room and flung open the door WHAT do you want He shouted rt rn a vorce so loud rt made his l1ttle srster clap her hands over her ears Eddie' you know what mama said about shoutrng at me Where have you to go swimming with me Please do Ed die' It rs a lovely day and mama won t let me go with the others without someone older She says I might get drownded What does it feel like to be drownded Ed d1e'P With a groan he went back into hrs room for hrs bathing surt No use for him to say no rf he wanted that car for a blrthday present Now Eliza would go and get about live hundred little girls and boys none of them over ten to go with her Wouldnt he look just fine going down the road with all of them' ' As they started down the road with Ed die leading and all the children behind h1m Eddre spied Joan Holland and Sam my Mance coming very slowly down the sidewalk Wasnt there some way for him to get away from these blamed k1ds'J Then an rdea came to h1m He would use that dignified walk that he had been practrs mg and he would bow and say good mornrng with a cool smile then go on quite quickly as rf he had very heavy business on hrs mrnd As the two parties drew nearer together Eddie hastened hrs steps a l1ttle threw back hrs head and thought how rmpressed Joan would be He noticed that the children behind hrm were very quret but he didnt turn hrs head because h thought that rf he rgnored them Joan mrght think that they werent w1th h1m but only golng the same Way Now they were meetrng As Eddie strargtened from a low bow his face very red through its close contact to the ground he heard a sound behind hrm that made hrm turn Behind hrm ln sm gle file were all the children bowing so low that their heads almost touched the srdewalk The grave expressron on their red faces as they regarned their posture with their shoulders so far back they could see nothing but the sky they looked so comr cal that Joan and Sammy were rn gales of laughter Eddie almost ran down the srdewalk Why he wondered had he got en himself into this mess?
