lm RRI we amazement then wlth rapture H1s l1ttle face was almost t1ansformed as he hstened to the maglc muslc Some day some day he would r1se out of these sordld tene mments 1nto the great bnght world where muslc llke that was He would wrlte musrc lxke that' Oh yes he would' The business man came out more xrate than ever and drove away shuttmg off the radlo w1th a snap That day a bus1 ness deal was lost and a dream was born Why I'ad109 Mrytle Condon B H S 39 MARY GOES TO COLLEGE Mary Prow sat th1nk1ng about goxng to college She would graduate from hlgh school ln the sprlng What would she do then? She couldnt go to college b cause her parents couldnt qulte afford to send her Her thoughts wandered She thought of a few l1nes of poetry and wrote them down 1n the front of the notebook he had been look1ng at Two months later she looked 1n the front of the notebook and to her surprrse saw the llnes of poetry WhlCh she had en t1re1y forgotten She added more l1nes After careful conslderatxon she Sent the poem to a magazlne contest After many txresome days she recerved a letter from the Judges of the contest Inclosed was a twenty five dollar check and the letter al o stated that they wlshed her to send all the poems she could wrrte to them By the end of the summer vacation Mary had earned enough money to pay part of her way through college Thrs w1th the help of her parents was enough to pay her expenses So because of a few lrnes of poetry Mary ach1eved her goal and the four years wh1ch she spent 1n college were about the happlest years of her 11fe Av1s Soper B H S 41 YUKON JUSTICE Jake Melgot watched h1s last match lowly sputter and 'fo out and shlvered Gar he rumbled deep 1n h1s throat a hundred m1les frum nowhere und no matches Vat a plgglementl He hunched hlmself lower 1nto h1s hooded parka and gave hlmself over to the palnful effort of thrnklng As Jake well knew lt was no Joke to be caught on the Yukon IH m1d winter w1thout matches He also knew that unless somethmg unforeseen hap pened Jake Melgot would be a frozen corpse by the next day down the tra11 What was that move ment'P He crouched behmd a boulder and snuggled h1s rlfle butt clo er to h1s cheek Agam that movement down the t1a11 and th1s t1me he caught a gllmpse of a gray fur parka By gar' he chuckled Maybe I ll get me some matches ar ta all well arm chest spat and the man stumbled and fell 1n a heap Jake grinned an ev11gr1n Wh1Ch dls closed broken snag teeth browned by to bacco He stumbled down the trall The man came ln slght A tall bu1lt man wlth a r1fle under h1s Jake l1ned h1s S1ghtS on the mans and squeezed the trrgger The rrfle Have to hurry and get a ETB gom Thrs cold was getting h1m fast He searched through the man s pockets and after much huntxng gave a grunt of satrsfactlon He drew forth the prec1ous strlp of y .
