She couldnt go to college b cause her parents couldnt qulte afford to send her Her thoughts wandered She thought of a few l1nes of poetry and wrote them down 1n the front of the notebook he had been look1ng at Two months later she looked 1n the front of the notebook and to her surprrse saw the llnes of poetry WhlCh she had en t1re1y forgotten She added more l1nes After careful conslderatxon she Sent the poem to a magazlne contest After many txresome days she recerved a letter from the Judges of the contest Inclosed was a twenty five dollar check and the letter al o stated that they wlshed her to send all the poems she could wrrte to them By the end of the summer vacation Mary had earned enough money to pay part of her way through college Thrs w1th the help of her parents was enough to pay her expenses So because of a few lrnes of poetry Mary ach1eved her goal and the four years wh1ch she spent 1n college were about the happlest years of her 11fe Av1s Soper B H S 41 YUKON JUSTICE Jake Melgot watched h1s last match lowly sputter and 'fo out and shlvered Gar he rumbled deep 1n h1s throat a hundred m1les frum nowhere und no matches Vat a plgglementl He hunched hlmself lower 1nto h1s hooded parka and gave hlmself over to the palnful effort of thrnklng As Jake well knew lt was no Joke to be caught on the Yukon IH m1d winter w1thout matches He also knew that unless somethmg unforeseen hap pened Jake Melgot would be a frozen corpse by the next day down the tra11 What was that move ment'P He crouched behmd a boulder and snuggled h1s rlfle butt clo er to h1s cheek Agam that movement down the t1a11 and th1s t1me he caught a gllmpse of a gray fur parka By gar' he chuckled Maybe I ll get me some matches ar ta all well arm chest spat and the man stumbled and fell 1n a heap Jake grinned an ev11gr1n Wh1Ch dls closed broken snag teeth browned by to bacco He stumbled down the trall The man came ln slght A tall bu1lt man wlth a r1fle under h1s Jake l1ned h1s S1ghtS on the mans and squeezed the trrgger The rrfle Have to hurry and get a ETB gom Thrs cold was getting h1m fast He searched through the man s pockets and after much huntxng gave a grunt of satrsfactlon He drew forth the prec1ous strlp of y . 'i , . . ., . . rr lfkrrfl house for awhrle nd then decrded I would go up to Barkers garage I had heard that a skunk had been seen around the garbage bucket behrnd Barker s house When I got to Barkers I decrded that I would go rn and borrow hrs flashlrght as mrne wasnt much good I drd thrs and went down back and there by the garbage parl were two skunks They got nervous and started for tlfe henhouse near by I took a hurrred shot at one of them and mrssed and they got under the henhouse Makrng up my mrnd to get one of them I went down behrnd the burldrng and Ilashrng my lrght ahead of me I looked underneath There stood Mr Skunk lookrnv at me I took arm and fired and got skunk No 1 more skunks One started out from un der and I decrded to chase hrm I made one leap and where was I9 I drdnt know' Everythrng was dark my rrfle was gone and I was rn some sort of a hole that was full of water drrty water too because rt tasted awful I had gone un der and the one thrng that I hung on to was the borrowed flashlrght At last I crawled out soakrng wet I went up to Barkers house and gave hrm back hrs flashlrght and told h1m what had happened To my surprise rnstead of a well whrch I thought I had fallen rnto rt was a cesspool I hurrred home took a good bath and changed my clothes The next day I fished my rrfle out of the bad smelling pool and threw the skunk rn Srnce that nrght I have been very care ful where I hunt for skunks Robert Howard B H S 39 CAP N JONAS TELLS A YARN OF NIP AND TUCK Capn Jonas Hathaway put hrs feet on the edge of the stove and trlted hrs charr back untrl rt rested at a precarrous angle 'farnst the plne counter of the lrttle store rn Turner Center He pushed back hrs rat and rubbed hrs bald head wrth a weather roughened palm Several other men sat around the fire talkrng but at the well known motron they stopped therr norsy laughter and the room was shrouded rn hushed expectancy Capn Jonas eyes twrnkled as he slowly lrt hrs prpe and let the clouds or blue to bacco moke rrse rn sprrals toward the cerlrng Thrs was hrs usual procedure be fore startrng a yarn and Capn Jonas was a renowned story teller Slowly n hrs own appealrng manner Capn Jonas began hrs story Drd ever I tell yew about the trme I was caught rn a no theaster and drrven erghty mrles off my course? He always started hrs yarns that way and he was never known to repeat one Wall here he paused to tamp down the tobacco rn hrs prpe wall I reckon that the e was about the toughest squall I ever had the poor luck to be caught out rn But we re gettrng the vyge home before the start so lets go back to the begrnnrn and start proper That was back rn the nrnetres Id say offhand I was capn of a lrttle frshrn schooner from Gloucester Jonathan Sparks was the first mate and a better all round seaman never walked a vessel s deck We started off one mornrn for a couple days frshrn on Georges banks for the Gloucester market 'Twas a perfect day couldnt be beat not a cloud rn the sky and the sea as smooth as anyone could want rt There was Just enough breeze to l 7' r -3 1: 4: 9 ' a ' 1 U .
