THE BREEZE -Elttvrarg THE OLD MAID AUNT The lxvmg room of the apartme t on the fourth door of Stuart Hall Brandon Col lege Mayfield New York pre ented a cene of peace and utter contentment on that day late rn May 1934 At one glanc a person would have known that th1s was one of the rooms on Rlversrde Drlve more famlllarly krown as Gentleman s Row the wealthy part of the college Around the room were hung pennans won ln grld 1ror1 and dlamond battles In one corner was a spaclous dlvan and scattered over the room 1n careless confuslon were several large easy chaxrs Two of these Judgmg by the legs arms and var1ous other por trons of the anatomy vlslble were occupled Closer observatlon proved thls to be the case Two boys were recllnlng 111 them gracefully whlle they lelsurely read a couple of magazlne art1cle Wlthout any warnlng an lnterruptlon came IH the form of a knock at the door Password called one of the boys Telegram for Mr Brandon came a volce The boy called Brandon uncolled h1s length from the chan- rn whlch he sat and opened the door C11SClOSlX'lg one of those servants of the publ1c a We tern UUIOH telegram carrler The latter held out a message and Brandon took It The car r1er closed the door and was gone Bran don wonderrngly opened the note and read the contents wh1le h1s roommate watched w1th a humorous gleam rn hrs eyes As Brandon read an expresslon of mock woe Game lnto h1s eyes and he fell back 1nto h1s chalr the telegram fluttermg from h1 hands Whats the matter9 Dld she turn you down? asked h1s roommate Its WOFQQ than that sald Brand n Yeah'P Ill ay' And Brandon lay back wlth h1s hands to h1s face It sure must be bad then mused roommate After several moments Brandon stralgh tened up and sald Well I suppose I mlght as well tell you Its l1ke thls My mother was an Engllshwoman one of two slsters daughters of Warren Forsythe My father was tourlng ln England with the Yale Glee Club when he met her It was a case of l ve at first 'lgh' Wlth both of them but as my father was then poor her father wa not IH favor of the marrlage So dad and she eloped and came to th1s country Mothers father was furlous and vowed that when he dled he would not leave any of h1s fortune to her At h1s death he gave all h1s wealth to mothers s1ster Grandfather had been a very succe sful merchant and left about 800000 pound My gra dmother survived my grandfather two months and then she passed away On belng left wxth all these rlches my aunt was d termmed to glve some of lt to my mother but as father had made a nea l1ft'e sum ln the stock market mother would not accept 1t Well fi ally Aunt Marl n deCld6d to 'ravel She has been around the w rld twice and has V1 lted every out of the way place there rs Thrs message IS from my mother say 9 , . . . .Q , ., . .
