Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal, Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way, But to act, that each to-morrow Find us farther than to-day. Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave. In the wor1d's broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act,-act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o'erhead! Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time, Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o'er 1ife's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate, Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. Cla s Hi tory In l95O, our class, then consisting of 18 students, entered the seventh grade, with Mrs. Helgemoe as our teacher. By spring we had lost three students, Allan Miller, Daniel Erickson, and Raymond Wick who all left for various reasons. As fall came again we found ourselves starting the eighth grade with one new student, Robert Johnson, whose family movedto Brookston from Homecroft during the summer. In September 1951 the faces of fifteen anxious freshmen were seen in the battered halls of B. H. S. Gladys Winquist had left us dur- ing the summer months. Two weeks after school began, Beverly Good- ell came to attend school with us. Like all green freshmen before us, we were initiated by the vengeful sophomores. This proved to be one of the most exciting of all the years' events. In October of the same year, Nancy Marttila left us to attend school in Florida, and Joan Lane left to attend school in Proctor. In November, a new student, Karl Dammer became a member of our class. n As we started our sophomore year, Dale Sorenson joined us making our numbers sixteen. In March we gave NThe Little Red Schoolhousen, a one act play. We had a very enjoyable time putting it on, and ap- parently the audience enjoyed it too. September l95b we as Juniors found Beverly Goodell moved 'to Du- luth, and two new students Dick Johnson and Betty Borman with us. Unfortunately, Dick stayed with us only one week. In February Helen Calvin decided she preferred marriage to textbooks, and left us to become a bride. In April, we presented our Junior Class Play, a three act comedy, WFather Knows Bestn. The leading roles of Mother and Father were played by Virginia Salli and Larry Niemi. NMoonlight Serenaden was the theme of our Prom held on May 6. As president of our class, Karl Dammer and his date ledthe Grand March. Sunday, May 22, we gave the Senior Class a picnic at Gooseberry Falls on the NorthShore Drive. We will long be remembered as being nstingyu, because of the shortage of food we brought along. As September l955 arrived, lb very proud Seniors came to B. H. S. to finish their last year. The class rings we had ordered the pre- vious February, were waiting to be worn by us, and we soon were very proudly displaying them. In September, also, we held our very suc- cessful Senior Tea---at least everyone told us it was succesful. November lO was the date of HThe Scarlet Shadown, our three act mystery play. While ,this play may not have had the worlds greatest performers in its cast, it was a financial success. After Christmas vacation we began to work on our Annual. We did manage to squeese in our pages for the deadline. May, our busiest month, found us face to face with many act- ivities. May A the Juniors gave us a Prom, which was a very ele- gant affair. Next, was the Honor Banquet on May 16, the Baccalaur- eate Services May 27, and the very best of all --- Graduation, May 29. Class Will continued Karl Alfred Dammer wills his ability to get along with Mrs. B rth to Tim Blazevic. Betty May Calvert wills her ability to stay out of trouble to Gary Hill. Dale LeRoy Sorenson wills his height to Douglas Dougherty. Virginia Mae Salli wills her position as 'Chief ticket seller' to whoever will do is next year. Deanna Judith Petersonwills her cheerleadingposition to the lucky gal who gets it next year. Donald Alfred Wilton wills his problem of too many girl friendsto Tom Niemi. Robert Louis Johnson willshis handholdingposition with Mrs. Barth to Seppo 05213. Allan Frederick Aho wills his good marks to Robert Clark. KayAnn Marie Peterson wills her temper to Peggy Shannon. by Kay Peterson The flu s P 0 flecy On the hectic morning of Tuesday, May 29, 1966, I dressed my three sons and daughter, piled them into our old 1962 Buick, and started for the North Shore Manu- facturing Company to purchase new play clothes for them. I persuaded the kids to stay in the car and entered the huge factory. To my surprise and extreme shock, there was Gladys, supervising the arrangement of counters in the new clothing de- partment. We started jabbering as fast as we could, and to my surprise, I learned that she owned the company. We decided to visit all our old classmates. We took off in her jet helicop- ter, for my eight room ranch house, to leave my children with Gladys' niece, and to leave a note to my husband that I wouldn't be home until late the next afternoon. We flew to Beaver Bay, to a luxurious trailer court and found Betty and Son- ny's beautiful pink and black, 6h foot trailer. The first thing Betty ghowedus was the compartment in the back of the trailer that harbored her beautifulthorough-bred Arabian horse, Golden Boy. After we had chatted for a while, we decided to find a baby sitter for Bettys three boys, and the three of us flew to Saginaw to see Bettv Dahl, nee-Betty Calvert. We found her in a dither, trying to prepare a mid-morning snack for her five year old twins and still keep her two month old triplet girls from crying. She was very busy so we didn't stay long. I guess living in atrailer with so many children is frustrating. We then flew to Brookston where we found Allan, who is principal of the school. He was trying to straighten out the dates forthe graduation and honor ban- quet forthe graduating senior class. He was in a vicious mood! It seems someone rang the bell to minutes early at noon so he was keepingthe entire student body an extra hour after school for the rest of the school year. We decided that as long as we were in Brookston we would visit Bob and Lucille Kainu. Bob had just come home from work in a garage in Cloquet, where he is the head mechanic. They have six ofthe loveliest children. While we were chat- ting, we got onthe subject of farming. Bob imformed us that Bob Johnson has a lOOO acre farm in Southern Minnesota. We flew donn there to see Bob. He has the most wonderful herd of dairy cows, each cow gives 32 quarts of milk to a milking. We found Bob Cultivating his early corn crop. He informed us of Dale's important pos- ition in life. Just two years ago Dale became president of the new Diamond T Cor- poration. We visited him, and he decided that for old times sake, we should go to dinner with him. He contacted Larry, who is Professor of English at Yale, and the five of us had dinner at New Havens swankest hotel, at Dale's expense. ' We then flew to New York and located Kay's business establishment. She is in charge of running the affairs of the huge company that makes Deanna's original dresses, and reproductions of them. Kay really is a busy girl! She has four sets of twins and one set of quadruplets. She suggested that we all attend the Broad- way production of 'Carlet Shadown, in which Virginia is starring. Incidentally, Ginny received an Oscar for the best performance in 'SmartyW, one of her latest movies. She is a wonderful actress and we had a wonderful evening, seeing New Vnrlt- Early the next morning , Karl and Cathy arrived home from their tenthlnney- movn- They have an atomic -powered yacht in which they cruised around the Mediter- 'ranean for three months this year. Cathy said Karl is the perfect homeloving hus- band. THEY decided to go to Washington D. C. with us to see Donald, who is the first six star general in our history. He took us on a tour of the Capital City, in his limousine, with a motorcycle escort of six brigadier generals, which was very exciting. It was wonderful to see our old school mates again and interesting to seelnw each is spending his life, but all nice things must end. So back to Duluth. Gladys had her business and I was anxious to get back to my flock. After all, therereafly is no place like home. ff? by Lorraine Tremblay . ' gk K V K Q' , f X, ' av' ..-, if: :WP ,f ,W 'N .
