T0 OUR SCHOCDL The eighth graduating class of Brookside High School wishes to offer its expression of sincere appreciation for the patient, understanding manner in which we were edu' cated by a very competent faculty. Our school has provided for us a wellfequipped building containing eight class rooms, a manual training room and a home economics room. This year our desks were put in the eighth grade room. We were also furnished with new black shades for the auditorium to use during picturefshows. On the north end of the building is located a line baseball diamond and tennis court. To the east is placed the play ground equipment, including swings, a slide and mcrryfgofround. A very beautiful lawn borders the school on the south'west. The lawn is adorned with very attractive trees and bushes. The tulips, when in bloom add a beautiful color scheme to our school. Brookside received a charter establishing her Grade A standing on December 16, 1929. The very good manner in which the school is kept is due to our very capable janit- or, Mr. Leo Webber. He is always the Hrst to enter the school in the morning and the last to leave it in the afternoon. We appreciate all the things we have received from the school and faculty. By these things we mean physical strengthening and knowledge we have obtained while attending Brookside High School. 'Two ORDER OF BOOK SCHOOL DEDICATION CLASS PAGE SENIORS CLASSES ACTIVITIES FEATURES and ADVERTISING DIEDICATJION TO oUR TEACHER The Brookside Graduating Class of 1938 has decided to dedicate our annual to Miss Helen Frisbie. She has been a greatinspnatnuito the schooL fler padence and guidance have helped to smooth out the difficult road the high school student must travel before he reaches his goal. We have found Miss Frisbie to be very fair in dealing with the students and in her we have found a lasting friend and hope she will understand our appreciation with the dedica- tion of this book in her honor. ' CLASS FLOVVER White Carnation COLORS Blue and White Commencement Exercises, Wednesday, May 25, 1938 Senior Distinction Day, Friday, May 20th, 1938 Five CLASS HISTORY On September 8, 1934, sixteen very happy and cheerful students appeared in Room 3 to begin their high school term. Mr. Fretz was our Home Room teacher. Two of our boys, Roy Logan and Nicholas Ralich made the first team in basketball. The freshman year seemed to be the most difficult year in High School. We ended the year with our sixteen classmates and decided we had spent a successful year. In 1935 we came back with fifteen of our classmates. Elizabeth Moldovan, Oliver Moon, john Mikitka, and Donna Myers moved and continued their schooling elsewhere. Thelma Conrad is going to Notre Dame Academy in Cleveland. Fortunate Naro and Emma Cunning' ham quit to go to work, and Louis Patek got a job on a lake freighter and has spent two success' ful years on the boats and has enjoyed it very much. We had a new girl, Evelyn Biscan, join our class. We had no time for leisure. We spent most of our time on our school work. In 1936 we were admitted to Room One with Miss Frisbie as our home-room teacher. We had eight students. but Helen Diosy and Margaret Polesko quit to go to work, so that left only six in our class. We are sorry that all of our classmates could not remain with us because we certainly have had a very pleasant time even though we have had to work. During our junior Year we visited Nela Park, The Cleveland Illuminating Plant, The National Tube, The Elyria Waterworks, and a Court Case. We had such a small class that we had to work hard to earn money for the junior-Senior treat. We visited Kelly's Island in May and everyone had a most enjoyable time. In 1937, six students came back to school as fullffledged Seniors. After a few weeks Nicholas Ralich left us, leaving only five. During the first week we chose our class officers, our motto, Tonight we take off-where shall we land, our class colors, blue and white, and our flower, the carnation. We worked hard to publish this fifth annual which we feel will be a great success. We have enjoyed our four years of active high school work and hope everyone else will enjoy it as much as we have. As a climax to our high school education we are planning a trip to Washington shortly after graduation and expect to have a grand time. We,'the Senior Class of Brookside High School, 1938, having been duly pronounced sane by all authorities, do hereby bequeath this, our last will and testament, to the faculty and pupils, trusting that they will cherish and use them to the best of their ability: I, Kathleen Patek, leave my studious nature to Stella Radyk. I, Roy Logan, leave my position as center on the basketball team to Bernard Wood. I, Betty Patek, leave my ability to play the trumpet and an empty chair in the orchestra to Anna Melbar. I, Steve Gacse, leave my fame as a dancer and a man about town to Robert Taylor. I, Edward Dotzlaf, leave my place at the head of the honor roll to Boris Pando. We leave the class of 1939 one row of seats in room 1. We leave our many privileges to the juniors, may they use them correctly and not put too great a strain on any of them. Last, we cherish many fond memories of our school and teachers and hope that classes to come will have memories just as fond and firmly imbedded in their hearts as these are in ours. We, the Senior Class of 1938, in witness have signed and sealed our last will and testament this 25th day of May in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and thirtyfeight. C., at thc end of the school term. Consequently they have had little time for parties and various other entertainments. In preparation for their trip, they gave a dance February twentyfnfth, which was highly successful. March the first, they presented three onefact comedies, namely, Wienies on Wednesday, Almost Every' man, and The Teeth of the Gift Horse. They serve ice cream every Friday, along with a hot dish, in the cafeteria. They sold candy and gum at basketball games during basketball season and took charge of the candy booth one week. Selling popcorn balls was one of their novelty ideas which, believe it or not, worked. Our secretary, Velma Webber, has taken care of the cash end of our various under' takinqs. Louis Sallay, our president, captain of the basketball team, ace pitcher and Afone baritone, left school March the second. V. blames had the inspiration to form a womcnis club in the village to promote civic and social activities. Many enjoyable social functions each year net us a nice profit, this being our only means of securing funds to carry out our program of giving help and comfort to our neighbor. Wlieii sickness or misfortune strikes. the Social Club is a friend in need. Several Civic improvements have been made possible through the financial aid rendered by the Club. first and most important was the establishment of our road side liirst Aid station lor emergency care ol accident victims. Each new venture proved so successful that we were encouraged to greater effort. This success is due to the splendid cooperation among the members and the fine harmony existing. which is so essential to the life of any organization. The club sponsors a Girl Scout Troup and sends one boy and one girl to summer camp. As is our custom we joined the Volunteer Firemen in providing a Christmas treat for all children in the Village. At this time we wish to pay tribute to our organizer and president for four years, Mies L. V. james who died very suddenly at her winter home in Coco, Florida. early in February. Our sympathy to Mr. james and members of the family. All women of the Village are eligible to membership and will find a warm welcome await' ting them.
