Brookside has always held a good record in all its undertakings and we sincerely hope that those supporters whom we leave behind will be able to preserve the old reputation. We are very fortunate in having a very reliable janitor, who is always the first to enter the building and the last to leave it. Brookside Senior High School is a First Grade High School, receiving its Charter from the State Department of Education, December 16, 1929. Brookside adequately serves the people of Sheffield Lakeg it contains eight class rooms, a manual training room, and a home economics room, behind the building there is a wonderful playground for the grade children and there is also a large girls indoor baseball field and a regulation baseball diamond, also a fine tennis court. Our School is located on the corner of the Harris Road and Colorado Avenueg it is a one story, red brick building, facing the south. It is surrounded by large lawns with beautiful tulip beds on the south and the west. Two ORDER OIF BOOK SCHOOL DEDICATION ' CLASS PACE SENIORS CLASSES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS FEATURES and ADVERTISING DEDICATION TO oUR PARENTS WE, the Senior Class ol 1932, in publishing this Third Annual of Brookside High School, do, dedicate this, our book, The Leader, to Our Parents, whose labor has made possible our education. We owe a debt that we can never repay, but we promise to try and make a success of our lives as we drop the anchor of education for a brief pause on- Our Graduaf tion. :nts T H SE L E A D E R SENIOR CLASS QFFICERS President ........4.............4.......... P THE LEADERYV- f H The Class Play The Seniors held a meeting March 11 and chose the class play, A Scrap of Paper, which is to be given in our High School Auditorium, May thirteenth. Even though it is scheduled for Friday the thirteenth, the seniors, who are eager to show the school what they can do on the stage as wellas in the class room and on the basketball floor, are sure to make it a huge success. It is under the direction of Miss Frisbie. It is full of hearty laughter. The first act arouses a keen interest that is not per' mitted to lag for a moment until the insignificant but mischievous scrap of paper is destroyed as the curtain falls for the last time amidst outbursts of merriment. The May Day Queen The High School assembled March 17 and chose their May Queen from the Senior Class, being Virden Maddock. The Senior Class Will We, the Senior-Class, being considered of sound mind, do hereby declare that this is our last will and testament: 1. Bernyce leaves her record as a gum chewer to Iona Kriebel. 2. Virden leaves her position of Editor to an unlucky junior. 3. Rosella leaves her basketball ability to Kathryn Root. 4. Joe bestows his knowledge in Chemistry to Paul Poor. 5. Walter leaves the ability to grow whiskers to Bob O'Dell. 6. Leona leaves her smile to Coletta Winter. 7. Luceda leaves her height to Phylis Gebhart. 8. Bill, as a gift, leaves his comb to Francis Foster. 9. John leaves his ability to cut classes to james McGettrick. 10. Elaine leaves the honor of riding home in a car every night to Leota Ricci. 11. Juanita leaves her love of clothes to Marita Ferner. 12. Luella leaves her soft voice to Christine Poor. 13. Mildred leaves her permanent to Marian Moon. 14. Mary Lou leaves her ability to talk to June Rath. 15' . Angeline leaves her curly hair to Mary Tarnosky. 16. We leave our dignity to the Freshmen. 17. We leave our outlines in English to the Sophomores. 18. We leave our two rows of seats to the Seniors of '33. 19. We leave our hopes for a bigger and better school next year. 20. We all regret that we have no more time to be spent with the faculty. 21. We leave our love for leisure and fun to the whole school. 22. Last of all to the teachers we leave the unruly and disquiet pupils. In witness whereof, we, the Senior Class of '32, have to this our last will and testament, set our hands and seal, this the 17th day of March, 1932. Samoa CLASS, or '32. 'H' 111 ..i . Social Club On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 26, 1950, a general meeting was held to which, all village ladies were invited for the purpose of forming a civic and social club, said meeting being called by Mrs. L. V. James, wife of the village fire chief. Twentyfsix ladies responded to the call and the following officers were elected: President, Mrs. L. V. James, VicefPresident, Mrs. Frank Youngg Treasurer, Mrs. Frank Field, Secretary, Mrs. Hazel E. Mais. The name selected for the club was The Sheffield Lake Social Club, and it was decided to hold regular meetings once each month. A general fund was started by banking the July 4th celebration proceeds. The success of the july 4th celebration was an inspiration to enlarge the fund and plans were immediately made to hold a fall festival, which in turn was also a big success. The money derived from parties, dances, etc., given the first year, greatly enhanced the club's fund, thereby enabling us to contribute largely to the purchase of an Inf halator, and also to help install a fire alarm system. The club also assisted in the purchase of various first aid supplies. The 1931 july 4th celebration ended the first year's work of the club. In August, 1931, the election of officers for the year 19?-1f32 resulted as follows: President, Mrs, L. V. James, re-elected, First VicefPresident, Miss Estelle La Rue, Second VicefPresif dent, Mrs. A. H. Manchester, Treasurer, Mrs. Frank Field, refelectedg Secretary, Mrs. J. H. Drompp. The new work taken up this year has been in the way of welfare work as follows: the club has donated stipulated monthly sums to the Brookside P. T. A., also to St. Teresa Parochial School which were applied to the purchase of food for undernourf ished' needy childreng at Christmas time many baskets of food were given to families in need. The club has also bought shoes and rubbers for school children in dire need. Inasmuch as all ladies of the village are eligible to join the club and no dues are required, our membership in the past eighteen months has doubled. It is hoped that in the years to follow The Sheffield Lake Social Club will have progressed even more than it has in the past year and a half. ? 1 fflf Q I 1 Twenty-One ' 'W' 4' 7173 THE LEADER FY Class Prophecy Working on a newspaper in the year of 1942, I thought I'd look up my classmates and see what they were all doing and how they had prospered. Down in Palm Beach I accidentally picked up a paper and learned that the United States Ambassador to France was in that city. The name of Walter Young was familiar, it may have been a coincident of names, but on closer inspection of the picture I recognized my old class' mate, Stub, That night attending the opening of one of the best shows in town I instantly recognized the three inseparable pals, Rosella Gubeno, Leona Gallagher and Bernyce Jungbluth. They were the same old flashing and happy trio. Later I went to thc dressing room and we had a nice time talking about Brookside High School. They told me that Mary Lou Reed was an M. D. at a Florida hospital and was renowned for her work. They also imparted that johnny Owen was famous as an auto racer, and was still single. The next day I left for New York. Cn the train the young woman sitting next to me looked familiar. Juanita Traxler! After greetings we exchanged news. She told me that she was married to an electrical engineer and was very happy. She also im' parted the information that Luceda Manchester and Mildred Reeder were joint owners of a large clothing salon which all the rich women patronized and they were doing very well. Good luck to them. I continued on my way and reaching New York in the evening I thought I'd take in a movie. I sat in the darkness of the theatre resting when I saw a name flashed on the screen, Joseph Welter. When his picture was shown I knew he was my old friend. He was the popular impersonator of Clark Gable, the once great actor. Our Joe played his role like a veteran. Even outshining Clark Cable in the love scenes. I left before the crowds and in the lobby encountered Elaine Poor. She recognized me but I didn't know her. She told me she was waiting for her husband who was manager of the theatre. I congratulated her on her good fortune. She looked happy and pros' perous. She told me that Bill Reeder was chief Radio Operator on one of the biggest ocean stcamers. I was glad to hear this as I knew Bill liked radio. I left New York for the old home town. I wanted to see what Luella Mackert and Virden Maddock were doing. Luella, I met at her old home, but she was only home on a visit from her duties as manager of a large department store in Cleveland. I asked her if she knew where Virden was. She told me that she was out West in Hollywood taking a leading role in a comedy. I was wondering if she had met joe as I was mentally arranging a match between them. It was nice to hear good news of all my classmates so I went back to my work with renewed energy. ANGELINE NARo, '32. Ii .iii ill. .LL ,.1!. SI. Twenty-Two ff 1 U- Q . Leona Gallagher, or for short, Lee, and she isn't very large, was certainly capable of making a good foul shot at any time. She took second place in the County Foul Shooting Contest which took place in Elyria. Through her many of the team's points were made. Genevieve Rath, better known as June Rath, could block. She seldom failed the team, and so through her good playing the team scored a large number of points. Bernyce Jungbluth, or Bunny, is a guard that was hard to beat. She worked hard to hold down her girl which she done very well. Thelma Miller will be back next year to keep her place as a guard. It was hard for an opponent to get by Thelma when she was on her guard, she held her opponents almost scoreless. Virden Maddock, Captain, was one of the best guards Brookside ever had. She always was able to get the ball when an opposing forward tried to dribble. She was always cool and lead her team very well. It will be hard to replace her. Credit should also be given to all the members of the squad, because without them and their faithful help at practice we could have had no success as a team. . Boys Basketball Having only two regulars haek from last year the hoys' haskethall team was in need ot experienced players. Although they had very meager material they managed to have a formidahle team on the floor at all times. The hoys' team was lacking at the main point at center although our centers were good floor men, we were unahle to get the tipfoft in any game and therefore we were going into every game under a great handicap. Although the team won only 3 of its 8 league games they have gained experience and undouhtedly next year's team will he more tormidahle than this year. The hoys have elected Wayne Boyd, a forward on this year's team, to captain the team for next season. We all wish them success that is due them. We all hope that the hoys will work hard and put Brookside hack where it he' longs in the County League Standings. T1f'w11Iy-Hia' 'vw THE LEADER Boys Basketball L Although our boys' team this year did not finish as high in the County League Standings as many of our previous teams have, they were beyond a doubt as hard workers and were playing a good clean game at all times. The outlook for a successful team next year is very bright as only two men are lost by graduation, john Owen and Walter Young. With seven lettermen returning from this year's squad and many other good players to choose from Brookside beyond a doubt will have a very good team on the floor at all times. From the standpoint of games won and lost this year's team was not very sucf cessful, but being very hard hit by graduation last year, this year's team was inexperif enced and it was necessary to build up a winning combination for next year. The boys returning have gained experience and have worked hard together which will help them a good deal for next year. Our team won only 6 out of 16 games but we were trying hard all of the time and beat many strong teams. There were no outstanding stars on this year's team, everybody working as a group and trying hard to win all the time. The boys are all eager to put Brookside back where it belongs- Watch Them Next Year. Several were inexperienced and we could not do so well, hut we have an experienced team for this spring. The hoys expect to have a very successful season as we will have everything to make a good team.
