We also received very high recommendations from the state inspector. We, the second graduating class of Brookside, will long remember the build' ing and our wonderful playground. Our playground is composed of six swings, a merryfgofround, whirlyfgig, six teeterftotters and a slide. In addition, we have a wonderful regulation baseball diamond, a girls baseball field and a nice tennis court. Our building adequately serves the people of Sheffield Lake. The building has eight class rooms, a domestic Science, and a manual ,Training room. The School Board has equipped our building to meet the state requirements and we are proud of Brookside. Our Gymnasium is one of the best in the country. The attendance and spirit shown at our games has put Brookside in line for the top position of good sportsmanship in Lorain County. Our parents and teachers have shown a wonderful spirit of cooperation and with such excellent means of work, the pupils of Brookside High have over the right to boast their school. Uur Ianitor LEU WEBBER Leo as we all know him is a very efficient and hard worker. He is always ready to do his part in work or play. Ref markable ability along numerous lines of sociability has been discovered among numerous members of the junior class. These students have made it possible for the junior class to entertain the senior class to a dinner and theatre party in Cleveland Dramatics also played a large part in the lives of the Juniors Mom was presented by the Juniors, April 10. The different parts were played in fine style. Everyone seemed to enjoy this play. The Juniors played an important part in the Athletics of the school Many of the boys and girls have received letters for faithfulness and hard work on the basketball teams. X There are thirtyfnine members in all and most of them have been active in some .1 play that has been presented this year. We have given three plays in all. l The iirst one was presented in November. The title was Blimmers to Blame 'R and from the way Charles Schuck portrayed Blimmer, most of the audience went home feeling that poor Blimmer had been grossly misjudged. The rest of the class were equally as good and the play was a real success. In April the Junior Class gave a play Mom to help pay for the juniorfSenior Banquet. All members of the Cast were Juniors and they more than did their credit to their class. The Senior Class play came in May. lt was entitled The Coming of Caroline and there were so many people so anxious to meet Caroline that we had a big audience that evening. The play was well received and the actors and actresses cerf tainly seemed fitted for the parts that they played. In fact Miss Miller says the casts of all the plays this year have put more zest into them and have worked harder than 3 they seemed to in previous years. Perhaps she will write us a letter of recommendaf X tion to some Hollywood movie director! il i .s .-. - 5 c mt - . The first semester we spent our time in sewing and home planning. All the girls made their cooking aprons as well as four or live other things. One of our projects was a doll dress contest. Using the same pattern, each girl made a dress that suited her doll best. We had all kinds and sizes and all of them were well made and very pretty. The judges said that they had 3 hard time deciding just which dress was best. Miss Miller offered enough goods for a dress as first prize and this was won by Josephine Kriebelg Helen Gilles won second place and Dorothy Sigg, third. Another first semester project was the making of a model doll house. There were four rooms, living room, dining room, bedroom and kitchen. All the furni- ture and trimmings were made by hand from the velour davenport to the plaster paris kitchen sink. After the wee home was finished, we carried it to the First Grade room for them to play with. . The second semester was spent in learning to cook. We spent a great deal of time figuring out wellfbalanced meals and proper diets. W We have enjoyed this year's work and we regret that next year someone else will be taking Domestic Science instead of us. Nineteen I 'I-'lit Q p...l,.alglg.p.Qigill.. They work together and have accom' plished a great deal to make our village a clean, decent, upftofdate, pleasant and respectable place to live. Thay all have the interests of the village at heart and have cooperated in the highest degree to this end. Due to their team work Sheffield Lake Village has a good reputation. Our Mayor, Fred Hosford, has done more for our school and school children than any mayor in the county. He planned, figured, worked and devoted 3 great deal to get our playground and athletic field. He spent most of his summer vacaf tion last year working for us. We want to thank him for all he has done for us and we want him to know we appreciate his work. He shows the same interesting effort and interest in all village affairs. In a few words we are Proud of Him. Mr. Frank Field our clerk has given a great deal of time to our school and we owe him many thanks for our picture shows. His interest has always been with the school and he helps in every way possible. He knows the affairs of our village better than anyone and works hard for every thing that is of good to the village. He is prompt, accurate and a very good clerk. Roy Clites and his squad are a formidable group. Their presence in ap' propriate uniforms is alone enough to demand respect and order. All are respected and they are all good hard workers. Lorain County League Champions Beginning with what looked like very meager material, the hoys' basketball team came through with a very successful season. Although they are cofwinners for the league championship with Eaton and Penfield, they lost hut one league game hy only one point. It was the final league game of the season when they were defeated hy Eaton on Eaton's floor. After playing a full season of twentyfthree games, the hoys went up to the finals in the County Class B Tournament. Here they were defeated hy Amherst after Goodsite was put out of the game hy fouls soon after the second half hegan. The competition this year was very close, every game heing a hard fought one. However, our Brookside warriors came through with flying colors and added three more tropheys to the trophy case. Because they gghave always 'playedla' clean, hard fought game, they won for themselveskathe distingtion of being goodsports. The whole group worked like a machine player being essential part. The fact that they won the, first nineiqbfit of the ten league games, gives them a record which was beaten by no class B 'school in the county. Their record of piling: up an axgerage' ofg twenty'two points' per game to their opponents twenty points, provesitheir superiority in playing. Undoubtedly, next year's team will miss the services of John Boyd, Vincent Biltz and Ernest Goodsite, who graduate this year as they were the main threat of their opponents throughout the season. They made for themselves a record equaled by few. Others who graduate this year are Frank Root, Henry Findora, Wilbur Kelling, Charles Schuck and Robert Mittendorf. As a Htting tribute to the boy's team this year, various people of the com' munity presented them with a beautiful symbolic trophy. This is in addition to the one given by the County and is held in the highest esteem by our whole school. LORAIN CGUNTY STANDINGS School W. During the season we made 460 points to our 11 opponents 192. Thus making an average of 26 points to the opponents 11. il Under the coaching of Coach McConihe the girls worked hard to develop a l good team. Throughout the year the girls on the squad showed fighting spirit and ' good sportsmanship, The team worked as a group and not individuals. Due to XM these things we were close to the top in the league standings. l l Our next year's prospects never have been so bright as we have 7 letter girls back. We regret the loss of Bodnar, Field and Tobin-as they have helped us a p . great deal. We hope to bring Brookside their first girls Championship team in Q jx 193142. Come out and help us next fall by giving us your faithful support as has 1 1 1,217 been shown in the past. if ' A great deal of credit should be given to the girls on the second team, through E Q-rv their help and good spirit at practice, we were able to get more from our practices. 1 The girls basketball team consisted of Mildred Reeder, center forward, if the l 1 ball was in her hand no fear of a misplay, it most always meant a basket. Give Barb credit for her blocking, she could also make baskets. Our other forward, Eleanor Field, was a player needed throughout the game. Without her excellent all around playing what would we have done? She could be depended on to get the ball in the basket. - Q , Qenieve june Rath showed up with flying colors, her Erst year on the regular' team but to watch her holding an opponent down she would be taken for a veteran player. June had the speed and used it. Berynce Bunny jungbluth, also started in as an inexperienced player,'l1Jut to see her get thefjump ball, and the center ball no one would have known, her as a new player. She also did a good job at guarding. Virden Maddock, Kid, our captain, is considered one of the best guards we have ever had at Brookside. She stuck like glue to the best forwards in the county and made them all look bad due to her ability to hold them scoreless. She was cool and calm in all emergenciesqgand helped us a great deal to win., our many games. We showed our appreciation ,for her wonderful work by re-electingx her captainof our 193162 girls team. Everyone liked Kid and marveled at her playing. 'Q , l Thelma Miller a' Freshman, should be given credit for her help to the team, she was readye when needed, give her another year of experience and she will be hard to beat. V V ' Rosella Gubeno is anotherigood player, especially is her eye good on basket making. Rosella helped the girls win many games, with her good playing. Virginia Tobin may be small in size, but when she had a girl to guard, size didn't mean anything to her. Leona Gallagher, another small player but one who knows her basketball. She is quick in action as well as quick thinking in a game. There are many other good players on the squad. They all did their share and 'their best to make our season a great success. They are: M. The Echo Club The Women's Gym class of Sheffield Lake Village was organized three years ago on Oct. 11, 1928. Meetings are held every Thursday evening of each week dur' ing the regular school year in the Brookside Gym. The Echo Club in the third year of its organization has an enrollment of twenty members. The club from its beginnning has been dedicated to the principal that good health comes from exercise and has been a means of enjoyment and recreation to the numerous women who have belonged. It has given one exhibition during that time. , Instructors are Mr. Anton Meier, marching and drillg Mrs. Arthur Zacharias and Mrs. James McConihe, exercise and drill. We are proud of our women's gymnasium class as they are very active and produce results. We all enjoyed their gym demonstration last year and as a school, we compliment them on the results they have shown us. It certainly shows a won' derful, active community spirit, teamwork and cooperation which are so necessary to a school and a village. Success to the Echo Club! 'I':lIII'Il' -llll -NUM 0 if .-. Men's Gym Class The men's gym class of Sheffield Lake Village has been operating successfully now for three years. Roy Clites has served as secretaryftreasurer for three years. And the success of our class is due a great deal to his untiring effort. Meetings are held on Wednesday evening of each week during the regular school year in the Brookside gymnasium. Classes usually start around 8 o'clock and are through to IO o'clock. Setting up exercises open the meeting. Then teams are chosen from the group and volley ball is on tap for the rest of the evening. Some real interesting games are played. A home and home series of games was played with Ridgeville which resulted in the double victory for Brookside men's gym class. The best part of our class is our after gym feeds, Each month an eats com' mittee is appointed by Roy Clites. His choices if the food is a sample has always been the best. For our lunches and stories after gym have helped hold our class together. This class is open to all men in the community and we invite you to come. We all have a good time and derive a great deal of benefit from our calisthenics and games. Come and join us, at least come up some Wednesday nite and look us over. k L 2 l l 'TwentyfEigl1t w 0 A 6 6 U ff lol 1 1 o n A APN' ' A 1' A my NV is Ny FEATURES AND ADVERTISING W in x 7 T 7 ' NWN!!! if i I f Q V S1 I, W f V.: .Q Q94 ki YEOOA 1-fi V A X Q .N Q.y..lIp.alllg,l,Qllll.. A. year will end in May, so we have had seven active months since school started. Beginning with a ine membership drive with a gift picture for the classroom which secured the most members. The P. T. A. meetings this year have been more of a social event, each month holding something of interest beginning with a lecture and then in line came Interpretive dancing, a kids party, and musical events where in we found that Brookside has a large number of musical folks. We have enjoyed the School Orchestra twice and have noticed its great improvement. All meetings were concluded with a social hour at which light lunches were served. Besides our social activities we have purchased a much needed piano for the school. This together with the feeding of about 30 undernourished children has called for special efforts to take of increased expenditures. For the remainder of the year we have planned a Seth Parker Singing Bee for April and the annual election of officers for May at which meeting we are planning a Birthday party with a surprise for all. It has been very gratifying to see so many men taking an interest and wonf derful cooperation of the group as a wholeg the Teachers and our Committee members, have made this year an exceptionally pleasant one. Due to this fact the membership of the club varies each time grades come out. This does not mean, however, that only the pupils with the highest grades get into the Effort Club but as the name implies, each and every student who makes an honest effort to raise his grades and does raise them a certain number of points may become a member. The plan is a very simple one. Each student who has an average in his four major subjects of from 70? to 8O'Zn must raise this average 3 points the next six weeks to become eligible for membership. If the average is from 80? to 90W only two points are needed while from 90W to 92621, one point is sufficient. If the stu' dent is fortunate enough to have an average of 92073 he need only maintain that average to be a member of the club. Membership is, in this way, automatic and we certainly have a hard working group of boys and girls trying to have their names appear on the club roll and to keep it there. At the end of the year all members who have been in the club twice during the year are given a special treat of some kind. It is usually of an educational na' ture such as a trip to an art museum, a news paper office or a zoo. Each pupil works his hardest all through the year in order to be one of the lucky ones who participates in this treat. In spite of the fact that the Effort Club is an honorary club, its membership is one of the largest of any club in the school. It certainly creates a lot of interf est and enthusiasm among the students when it comes to studying and earning grades. Center Bus--Lake Route, Roy Clites, driver. Right Bus-Ridge Route, Earle Johnson, driver School Busses Brookside is very fortunate in having as good if not better busses than any school in the county. And when we came to compare drivers and guards there is no such thing for we think we have in Mr. Roy Clites, Mr. Earle Johnson and Mr. Wilbur Osborne the best drivers available. The guards, F. Root, V. Biltz and J. Owen are also a great help to our transportation problem. All in all it is a safe and efficient transportation system which we have a right to be proud of. It is very important to a school to have the children arrive and depart on schedule, for which we are very thankful to the above mentioned drivers. Every driver has done a great deal to make our year a pleasant one. They have been very accommodating and thoughtful in carrying us to and from school activities. We shall never forget our many banana splits in Elyria while our faith- ful drivers waited for us after a drive from a basketball game. With our modern busses, equipped with heaters and ventilators we owe a great deal to our school board who have our comforts at heart. We thank them and want them to know we appreciate what they have done for us. zfililii . HUM , Zhi- , Fortyfliive E E l s li?
