I scuff my way over dull brown tiles Down along the musky hallway. Old brown doors, each with a memory: A face, a group of faces, blurred and wasted Sun streams through dusty panes Scarred, battle-worn desks Chalk dust on my sweater. The faces are the same. The hopes and ambitions of one of our fellow students came to an abrupt end last year. In February of last year, Stanley Wolpert died of a form of arthritis, periarthritis. The passing of time taught us to accept the tragedy of his death, but we can never accept the far greater tragedy of his dying before he had a chance to develop to his full potential. He was a member of the service squad and an outstanding student. This is indicative that he possessed those qualities so lacking, yet so needed in today ' s world. As death knows no partiality, Stanley ' s passing brought everyone in the school closer together. Black and White, Jew and Gentile, Liberal and Conservative all came to mourn our common loss. It is with these ideas in mind that we dedicate our yearbook to the memory of Stanley Wolpert. 18 To the Class of 1972: June, 1972 You have enjoyed the distinction of spending your senior year at Brooklyn Techni¬ cal High School during our school ' s Golden Jubilee Year. I congratulate you upon the successful completion of your student days and your graduation into the ranks of distinguished alumni that serve the world community in a variety of gratifying ways. Many institutions have ceased to exist during the last fifty years while Tech has not only survived, but it still rates as one of the outstanding technical secondary schools in the country. This is due in large measure to its ability to change to meet new conditions and challenges in a rapidly changing society. Our curriculum, faculty, administration, physical plant, and instructional materials and methods are con¬ stantly being adapted to provide the best possible education and training to our selected, talented students. I sincerely hope that you will meet with great success the challenges ahead, wheth¬ er you are in college or in industry. We have provided you with basic knowledge, understanding, and technical skills. These must be fortified with creativity and humanity, if you are to be respected by your family and society. Personal cleanliness and neatness are required of all members of the S.O.S. at all times. During their tour of duty, the offi¬ cers will inspect their men for these qualities. 2. A member of the S.O.S. should con¬ sider himself on duty at all times. Whether on post or off, he should always be striving to help in maintaining the high standards of Tech. 3. While on post all members must be alert, polite, and have a thorough knowl¬ edge of the orders for his particular post. 4. Members must report to their post as promptly as possible. 5. Members shall not leave their post until properly relieved. This booklet is dedicated, to the Officers and the Squadmen who have made the Service Squad one of the finest organizations at Brooklyn Technical High School. Service Squad Handbook BROOKLYN TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL 6. Your badge does not entitle you to unusual privileges. 7. Your badge does not entitle you to leave a class without the teacher ' s permis¬ sion. Members of the squad may leave a subject class early or arrive late with the permission of the subject teacher. In such cases there must be a Late or Early privi¬ lege stamped on the back of the member¬ ship card by the faculty adviser of the Serv¬ ice Squad. 8. Your badge gives you authority in as¬ sisting with the enforcement of the rules of governing the students. Your duties must be carried out in a forceful but cour¬ teous manner and without any display of arrogance on your part. SMOKE PATROLS — There are four smoke patrols, one on each corner of the school block. One first lieutenant is in charge of each smoke patrol. Assigned to him are several second lieutenants who have lunchroom or door squads. It is the duty of these smoke patrols to stop stu¬ dents from smoking on the school block. Each corner has its own separate boundary lines. For Mr. O. Life, Now is within the reach of us all, Grab it. Realize what it means, before it is lost. Make mistakes, but learn. Imitate others, but stay individual. Take a slow walk, In the stand Gaze up into the stars, And smile. Do the most with what you have. Success will come, to those, Who know themselves. On this and following pages, staff photogra¬ pher Fung Lam captures the mood of these memorable performances. 180 181 186 187 192 193 Ambitious Art Project Honors Teehs Golden Anniversary A black tower of steel, alumi¬ num and concrete was designed and built by Brooklyn Tech¬ nical HS students in honor of the school’s Golden Anniver¬ sary. The tower, 12 feet high and weighing 5,000 pounds, is one of the more ambitious art projects ever completed by a high school. Under the supervision of teach¬ ers from the art, structural, mechanical and pattern-making departments, more than one dozen students collaborated on the design and construction. In most cases the students built those parts of the sculpture that they designed, utilizing the many facilities within the school. There are 10 steel and alumi¬ num plaques of abstract design, depicting the various curricula taught in the school, connected to a tower made of three stain- less steel tubes. The idea was to build a monument to convey the spirit of “Tech,” as the school is often referred to, and to dem¬ onstrate that the school has the means available to execute such an idea. Classes in the industrial de¬ sign and structural departments held competitions for the best designs of the tower and pla¬ ques. Those students submitting the best designs were given the opportunity to construct them in the school’s shops. Brooklyn Technical HS was founded 50 years ago as an ad¬ vanced high school with the very latest technical equipment so as to meet the country’s growing technology. The school has since rebuilt many of its laboratories and shops with the latest equipment, so that its facilities have kept abreast of the advancing technology. About 40,000 students have been graduated since its found¬ ing. Originally the school was de¬ signed to supply industry direct¬ ly with highly competent high school graduates and at the same time- to provide colleges with more advanced studen ts. Because of the growing com¬ plexity in technical fields, and the demand for higher educa¬ tion, the school now sends about 95 per cent of its graduates on to higher education in colleges and universities. Courses have maintained their basic technical competence so that a present graduate can also enter industry and compete favorably with those students graduating from a two-year community college course in some technical area. Guys Brooklyn Technical Light 50 Candles In celebration of the 50th an¬ niversary of the founding of Brooklyn Technical High School, the student body and faculty of the school produced revival of “Guys and Doljs” c Friday, December 17, and on Saturday, December 18. This is only one of the several events that will be held through- the jubilee Year. The Parent- Teachers Association of the school under Mr. Peter Cassi President, is cooperating in pro¬ moting this activity. The music was played by the school orchestra. There about 150 students involved in the production of which 50 were in the cast. There were two ulty members in the cast and in the orchestra.
