FIIEF D IN DEED Ashes to ashes, dust to dustg in sure and eer- tain hope . . They were hurying the President. The low voice of the ...bs minister was the only sound in the still air. ex- eept for a slow. steady solihing. And we Com- mit his body to the ground .... i' The Com- pany stood with howed heads. silent. There was nothing to say. They were hurying the Presi- dent. v X In the rear of the A Crowd. a man stood. watching. An old fedora, its hrim upturned. rested on his head. and a used lilaeli Navy Cape was slung across his hroad shoulders. He stood stifily. because his legs were encased hy metal hraees. As they were hurying the President. he smiled. They were hurying the President. All of America was mourning the loss of their leader. People sat in their homes quietly. remembering the Fireside Chats and the Newsreels. No one noticed the man sitting lieside them in their living rooms. He sat. wearing a hlaek Cape and an old fedora hat, and he was smiling. They were hurying the President. In far-off hattlefields. men heard the news and fought with a new purpose. In the trenches with them. wear- ing a hlack cape and an upturned hat. was a man, and he was smiling more 1-onfidently than ever. He was smiling lievause he had faith in the people. And as we return to our elassrooins and tasks. sitting beside us is one who shares our hardships. helps us with our troubles. and laughs with us. He is wearing an old, upturned fedora, and a hlaela Navy Cape. and he has a Cigarette holder elutvhed in his mouth at a jaunty angle. He is smiling yery liroadly. lieeause he has plenty of faith in us. If you look t-losely. you van see him. 4
