Even when that spirit has per- meated Christendom for four hundred years, as it most surely has in the case of Saint Ignatius, it is most difficult to reduce all thc color of Cod's grace to a simple paragraph or two. It is some- thing like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. To us, though, Saint Ignatius can best be typified by a vigil and a sword, the flavor of the man was military and his flavor is reflected in the Order which he founded. The many vigils he kept on the road to greatness began with an all- night vigil under arms in front of Mary's statue. All his life he was to remain close to her and this devotion to Mary is reflected, too, in all who have come in contact with his sons. In this book, we pay tribute to this Soldier- Saint on the four hundredth anniversary of his death. We ask his prayers for us in all the vigils we will be called upon to keep. VVe seek his intercession and enlightenment in wielding a life- long sword in defense of the things of God. YV! 1 3 Q N fi ,figs X ff if 43:13 9,2 W ff' i QNMV 4 X! In this Ignatian year the lights burning on the third floor far into the winteris night produced a new color for the cover, a new theme, and many new features like color pages, drawings and pictures in the ad sections. Money to finance the new features came through the work of Mr. Driscoll, SJ. and his business staff. Mr. Ryan, S.j. and Mr. Culkin, SJ. swore their staffs in as yearbook deputies. Whether in the courts of a French noble or the gardens of an Oriental prince, Ignatius desired his fol- lowers to be men capable of convincing the world of the truths of Catholicism. Soldiers of the spirit who might stand, wait, then by the logic and warmth of their words, win others. The Prep players were founded as the channel of the Prep man's growth to- wards such an horizon. Each year the Dramatic Society's calendar lists two main productions. At the November F athers' Guild meeting two one-act plays were produced: 'They Stand and Wait and The Late Captain Crow . These were presented in the unique Theater-in-the-Round mode of presentation where the audience surrounds the stage. The new George Gershwin Theater of Brooklyn College again became the stage for the main Prep production. Julius Caesar was the second consecutive Shakespearean play offered by the Prep Players. Three months of vigil by Mr. Winans readied the players to fill their roles created by Shakespeare's genius, Mr. Morgan, SJ. and his stage crew changed Brooklyn College into Rome and Philippi. james Donnelly and Ekro Rapier were awarded gold medals for their excellent creation of major roles. james Magee and George Lesnik received honorable mention. Silver medals for excellence in minor roles 100 P were put into the hands of Fred Saato and Thomas Krafinslci. john Warburton and Dolph Chianchiano received bronze medals for the best rendition of minor roles. As Father Headmaster presented these medals, the Moderators -were putting away the grease paint and the stage properties for use in 1957. , '.. 5.1. gf Us Brutus spums his last chance for salvation as he tums a stone ear to the entreaties of Portia, played by Ted Krafinski. 101 The conspirators plot the death of Caesar: Frederick Saato as Casca, james Donnelly as Brutus, and john Rapier as Cassius. Glee Club . . . You'll just have to stop crying during the 'Whiffenpoof Song'.,' In September 1955 a new activity was welcomed by the Student Council into the ranks of extra-curriculars. For a few years Prep man have voted for a choral group. Mr. McCrystal's assignment to Prep gave the undergraduates a Moderator. His own work in choral music helped in organizing and directing a Glee Club. Basses and tenors came forward for an audition in answer to the first announcement. Six weeks latter on November 17, 1955 the Brooklyn Prep fathers were stamped as first nightersf' The annual Smoker was the first public performance of the new choral group. Afternoons of practice, constant coaching, and careful watch over the eighth and quarter notes blended to bring applause from the congenial audience. This same group retumed to brighten the Parents' Night at Prep on February 10, 1956. The Clee Club set the tone for the evening in honor of St. Ignatius by their stirring rendition of Fundador,v the Spanish hymn and battle-call of the Jesuits. On March 23, 1956 the coordinated musical activities of the school gave proof of their vigilant work both privately at home and publicly at school rehearsals. The new Clec Club co- operated with the well-established Brooklyn Prep Band in a joint concert. The encores echoing through Loyola Hall proclaimed to the Clee Club that their first year was a success. xv- Ptep's newly formed Clee Club wanns up a choms of Dry Bones. Bottom Row: P. Nardi, I. Band managers Tom Hoffman and Tom Shea are the men who move the machinery. Tedious hours of practice are required to produce the harmony of 'La Ballet Parisiennef' 106 The baton of Mr. Edward Lavin, SJ. conducts the Prep's fifty piece band. Ranking high among the well-known activities of Brooklyn Prep is the Band. Music requires individual desire for perfection and technical vigi- lance. The tuba player may be excellent but that tuba must only blah at the right moment. Under the watchful eye of the Moderator, Mr. Lavin, SJ. each piece of the concert band blended harmoniously on March 23, 1956. Parents, friends and fellow Prep men beamed and clapped as the Synco- pated Clockv followed the Ballet Parisienneu on the concert program. Earlier in the year the Marching Band tried to cheer the football team on to victoryg the blare of the band was a sign of Prep spirit. Student spec- tators were lifted up by the stirring marches to cheer for their squad. At the Smoker in November the fathers applauded their musician-sonsg the mothers waited until February before sharing the realization that hours of practice at home pay dividends when blended with the notes of other instruments under the direction of a Nloderatofs baton. The Band by its harmony stands as a symbol of the purpose for a vigil. Personal development is best achieved by harmonizing the talents each stu- dent possesses. Extra-curriculars reach many facets that the classrooms never touch.
