Him we preach, admonishing every man and teach- ing every man in all wisdom, that we 'may pre- sent every man perfect in Jesus Christ. St. Paulg Colossians I, 28 Each of the forty-four faculty members of Brooklyn Prep is in every sense of the word a true Apostle of Christ. Not only do they form mature minds from adolescent through mental training and discipline, but, what is more im- portant, they form the complete catholic man through their words and example. Whether it be a comment during class, or their presence at K.B.S., by their every action they display their desire to give the Prep student their good ex- ample. The men in the following pages are truly dedicated men, dedicated to the work of forming spiritual characters in their students. Pnarecr OF msc ff ff' rf FY' Il UIOII K S be ,, ' , V l W . The C. S. P. A. medalist was awarded the mag- azine for the third successive year. This gratifying recognition marked the close of a year which saw many changes and improvements in the appearance of the magazine and the style of its material. A new series was needed to increase general appeal. lt was then that the Brooklyn Industrial Series was born. Aside from the features, there were other changes. The fiction staff wanted more sports stories and the answer was the first annual Mag- azine Sport Short Story contest. The staff continued its same hard work, origi- nality, and initiative for the three issues. There were award winners to be chosen, pictures to be taken, and articles to be written. The Art Staff blossomed out in a crop of illustration by Walt Marwitz and Jerry McSweeney. The junior editors were chosen. When the ink had dried on the last copy sheet, the work was by no means finished. Plans were being laid for the last social event of the term, the annual Magazine Awards Dance. lt was not until the last tired couple left the gymnasium on that evening, that the curtain was drawn on a busy but successful year for the magazine. .1 ...of- Jim Landers, Junior Layout Editor worries through his printing inches and the size of W. A fsano :- At halftime, when the big B-r's had died down to a slight roar, the long blue line of the Prep Marching Band stole the spotlight from the football team. With trumpets glistening in the white October sun and the drums piercing the crisp dry air, the strains of The lron Men stirred the heart of every Prepman. You could see the players raise their heads and fight just a little harder and with renewed vigor as the tri- umphant music drifted down from the stands. The cheers from the first game of the season had scarcely faded away when the Band received an invitation to march in the Holy Name rally at Jersey City. Its customary excellence took Jersey City by storm and clarinet as it walked away with a Commendation. , ln the light of their triumphs at the football games, Jer- sey City and Parents night, the seniors formed their own Dance Band. Since then they have gained a fine reputation for good music and the Glenn Millers of Prep have performed at the Smoker, Parents night, and their biggest success, the Prep basketball games. Not satisfied with an already fine list of accomplishments, the Prep Band qualified in the Preliminaries of the Catholic Music Festival and have gained the chance to appear at Town Hall. In that same competition three Band members quali- fied in the individual contests-Robert Smolarz, Joseph Zito, and Andrew Loughlin, won first place as a trombone trio. After gaining the reputation as the best sounding band in the city, at last the Prep Band will have the reputation as the best dressed band. The new blue blazers and grey pants are as handsome as any found in the lvy colleges. The numerous awards of the past year would not have been possible were it not for the untiring and unselfish efforts of the officers. The Band wants to extend special thanks to Mr. Lavin, S.J., their Moderator, Mr. Thorne, their conductor, and the student president, John Garafolo. MR. LAVIN, S.J Moderator The Trombone Section J. From those early days of September till Thanksgiving Day, the football squad was constantly engaged in tackling, blocking, running and passing. All those laborious days of practice were to have their payoff on game day. The squad, though undermanned, sported a three and four record. This year's team will be remembered for its fighting spirit. The squad never said die against an overwhelming Xavier eleven. And in the most remembered game of the sea- son it was the Prep's unconquerable spirit which carried her over the goal line twice to a l2-7 victory against a heavily favored Saint Francis. The Blue and White will be noted for its victorious journey to the wilds of Long Island. But most im- portant, their fighting spirit displayed itself in all its splendor when, after being behind by two touchdowns at the end of the half, the team bounced back to score two touchdowns. How- ever as in previous games, the Redmen had crossed the goal line once more than Prep. You parents, especially those of the players, know as well as your sons the toil and trouble that makes up a football team. For you have suffered when the team lost, you have leapt with joy when the team won. We know that you look with pride upon this year's football team. 4092: P' 4 4 f I 'f fi 1 z L, ly---vc lv Q6 MDCCCCVIII 1' g ll9 as . 9x He Isnt gonng anywhere Left Mr Alfred Carouso Head Coach Front Row Flynn Plerz Donnelly Dahut Mornarnfy Esposito Murphy OBrien Phnllnp Quldore Sherry Affrunh Back Row Vnccarells Mul lane Werner McNamara Koehler Klmgman Shea Kelly Elns man Conboy Cuomo Mastolom Ryan Cravolfa Zulnnskv Brown San Flluppo Slppel Hayes Carouso Mr Rlchard Really Asst Coach Not Pictured Lohr Manager Cornered' l2O Come on TOM, catch it! Adelphi and Cathedral then were easy wins. The Power game was a heartbreaker as Prep lost by one point in overtime. The fabulous fast break went on to defeat Rice, St. Augustine, St. Agnes, St. Peter's lS.l.J, and Fordham. Prep defeated Xavier by two points in another come- back beauty in the Jesuit Tournament. St. Peter's Prep was favored to win the finals by twenty points and it looked like the papers were going to be right but the Prep club staged the quickest comeback in its history. At the half St. Peter's was up by fourteen but Prep tied it in two minutes. The game went into overtime but Prep fell just two short of the cham- pionship. The next three wins were all squeakers: Prep beat St. Mary's by eight. Regis blew a seventeen point lead and lost to the speedy Prep five. The second Xavier game was nip and tuck but Prep won by four points. ln the Knights of Columbus Tourney, Prep reached the quarter finals by beating St. James and St. Nicholas but lost again to Power Me- morial lalso in overtimel. The season record was fifteen-seven lten-one at homel the record for the most wins in one season at Brooklyn Prep. M ,,5HgE,x.--,M R Q 1 YI The cinders at the Van Cortlandt Park track turn white hot under the heels of the Prep's cross country harriers. Out of eighty schools Prep finished fifth in the N.Y.lJ. meet and then moved on to conquer new foes at Yale where they defeated the Yale freshmen for the third straight year. Then the early season hopes of a successful season were thought shattered when team captain, Jerry Salvatore, was taken out of the lineup with a broken arm. But the rest of the team rallied in Jerry's absence to take fifth place in the C.H.S.A.A. meet. Joe Carney, Richie Kraus, and John Dwyer then combined to run away, literally, with the Jesuit Cham- pionships. Frank Connor and Mike Apicella were nosed out of a Jay Vee victory by a strong Fordham team, After a highly successful outdoor season the team moved indoors and took up where they left off. Fresh from a victory over highly-touted St. Michael's, they lost to Fordham Prep by one point. During this meet Richie Kraus set a high school mile record for the Fordham track, Jerry Salvatore returned to his winning form copping the half-mile and anchor- ing the mile relay. The Cardinal Hayes Meet was a true challenge to the high-spirited harriers and they proved themselves equal to the task as Joe Carney placed high in the lOOO yard run and Pete Baer leaped into the winner's circle with a victory in the high jump. Two weeks later Jerry Salvatore, as is his custom, came close to tying his record in the C.l-l.S.A.A. mile. Dick Messina took fifth place in the fifty and Mel Brown set a school record of 105.7 seconds in the same event. Of the fourteen Prep speed-merchants entered in this meet six scored points, Despite its small numbers the team finished fifth, only five points out of third place. Bert Bergan finished third in the Junior high jump and Eddie Kent set a school record for the broad jump in the private school meet this year. John MacMurray and Larry Jacas also contributed valuable victories. Of course no mention of the track team can be made without a note of deep appreciation and gratitude to the coach, Mister Murtha Law- rence, who was always the inspiration behind a winning team. While the veterans began hot, the team started slow, dropping the first meet aqainst Loughlin 34-4l and the contest with St. Francis' strokers 28-27. Although they lost to the swimming Terriers, our medley team of Hayman, Sweeney, and Brennan broke the l2O yard high school med- ley record. The Prep mermen started burning up the water by drenching Cardinal Hayes' contenders with a 52-23 score, and turned the Red- men's faces red when they trounced St. .lohn's with a winning perfor- mance of 41-34. ln the Trinity massacre, Prep sank their splashers with a decisive 58-l7 score, the highest of the season. Tom Sweeney, .lim Beattie, and Don Satriana turned in outstanding performances in this meet, The Cardinal Stepinac victory leaves nothing to be said except that all turned in the usual exemplary day's work in beating them 45-30. At Fordham, while the basketball team romped the Rams on the court, the swimmers ruined all Fordham hope of victory by drowning them 4l-34 after a tough start. We finished the dual-meet season with the team's victory over Xavier's Cadets. Drill is a commodity of which we have a good supply. We dunked the soldiers to the tune of 46-29. The Prep poolmen competed in the Nationals at Villanova and earned a hard won fourth place, which was greatly contributed to by Captain Hayman's first place in the lOO-yard backstroke and Drury Gallegher's second in the individual medley, a meet in itself. The same two men turned in the same positions in the Private Schools Meet and the freestyle medley combination of Beattie, Gallagher, Hayman and Brennen copped a first. The team placed third against tough com- petition. Medals were taken by Beattie and Satriana in the Novice meet and in Catholic Schools competition, Hayman turned in his first in the backstroke event, while Gallagher took two seconds in the lOO-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. ln the Jesuit High School meet, the swimmers thrashed all comers and took the meet. The individual strokers excelled in every event. The school may well be proud of another fighting unit in the swimmers. 139 if 3 i- in t . ,1 L Senior Swimmers. P. reach the top in all fields. ln scholastic and in extra-curricular fields we have watched Prep soar ahead of all competition. Class 4B2 is proud to have been a part of this fine Prep tradition. ln the field of journalism our class has contributed many members to the school publica- tions. While Bob Constantino does the layout work for the Magazine, John Fallon, Philip Mauer. and John Sullivan are on the Business Staff. Ray Robinson's fine feature article on Skin diving was surely a contributing factor to the Medalist Award. The presence of our class was also felt on the Blue Book. Mike Frahlich and John Burns are on the Business Staff and along with the rest of the staff members have always managed to pay the bills. lEditors Note . . . Oh yeahll John Greco has spread the fame of 4B2 in debating tournaments, with his fine record of victories. His talents are not confined to speaking, for he has gained the position of soloist at all the Prep concerts. Our other John Philip Sousa's from 4B2 include Joseph Zito, Robert Smo- lartz, and Jim McGowen. On the Latin Sight Team we were represented by Vincent Panettiere, who doubled on the stage crew. Joe Hughs, and Joe Fallon, two of the murderers in Macbeth, were among our best bowlers. Our sodality members include John Berte, Jim Quinn, and Ronald Habecker, who may frequently be seen at K. B. S. When it comes to athletics our class is always in the forefront. On the track Bert Bergan, Richard Scuderi, Chris Sarlo, and Bob Foley can be seen doing their laps every afternoon. Ed. DelGiorno, Bill Enright, Don Esposito, Ray Givers, and Russ Sasso are a few of the fellows who helped to give 4B2 successful intramural teams. The .Executive Department of our Class was made up of Bill Moriarity, Ed Mastoloni, and Jack Hayman. President Moriarity is one of the few three letter men in the School and our cap- able leader. Bill was captain of the baseball team, quarterback of the football team, and in the winter he made the basketball team. As vice president Ed Mastoloni will always be remembered for his off-hand remarks and pranks. Aside from varsisty jug Ed made varsity baseball and football. Rounding out this terrific trio is Jack Hayman, about whom little additional may be said. He has won every back stroke championship conceivable, including the National Catholic Championship at Villanova. Our four years at Prep are now completed but we shall always remember our training and remember that we are still Prepmen. A long pass downfield at a crucial moment always meant an- other reception by lchabod Sherry. On the diamond, the customary 4B3 speed, was shown by fireballing pitchers Bob D Mayo and Johnnie Rochford. When the cry went out for a Varsity Golf team Al Capparelli and Rudy Angell were among the first to join the sand trap patrol. By the way Al s 4B3 speed didnt work in the band because he always finished ahead of everybody else, But not only on the athletic field was the presence of the speed demons felt. When it came to meeting a deadline, Frank Bruton was always the first to have his column in. Pete House, ace photog of the Blue Jug, used to race from one place to another, snapping and developing. to make sure that the B. J. had good pictures. Dick Stuchinski, the business manager of the Blue Book, could outrun everyone and force them to buy a booster ad. Our other deadline beaters include Ken Arnold, Dick Bugge, Jim Caputo, Lou Einstman, and John Hannigan.
