Slider We, the class of nineteen hundred and sixty, hereby dedicate this yearbook to lVlr. William D. Slider, whom We consider to be not only an excellent teacher, but a devoted sponsor, an admirable friend and a highly respected person by all who know him. He joined the Brooklyn High School faculty in 1956, the year in which we entered into the realm of high school life. It was at this time that he became one of our sponsors. As most of the students know, Mr. Slider teaches subjects in the commercial field, his favorite subject being bookkeeping. He takes a great deal of pride in his profession and is always ready and willing to aid those students who come to him for help. Whether it was selling tickets at football games, attending our dances or guiding us at class meetings, he was there, ready and willing to aid us in every way he could. The main project of every class is the Junior-Senior Prom. which takes place in their junior year. As a class sponsor he was of the greatest help. It Was during our Junior year that We faced our biggest problems and were many times ready to give up. That was the time we realized his true value. He advised us, lifted our spirits and guided us on to complete one of the nicest proms Brooklyn ever had. As each of us goes our different Way, We Will look back, and when we do, we will never forget the teacher who always had a smile and a helping hand for the class of 1960, Mr. William D. Slider. 2 w Mrs. Nancy Frazier Mrs. Janet Barrick We, the members oi the 1960 Graduating Class, wish to extend our sincere thanks and deep appreciation to our Senior Class Advisors, Mrs. Frazier, Mrs. Barrick, Mr. Waltz, and Mrs. Wehagen, for the outstand- ing job they have done for us and our school. Mrs. Frazier and Mrs. Barrick have been with us ever since the ninth grade. They have done a great job working with us and helping us along. Mr. Waltz came to us in 1958 and since then has aided us greatly in many ways. Although Mrs. Wehagen became a class advisor in 1959, she, too, has aided us in many ways. Mrs. Wehagen replaced Mrs. Sites as a class advisor. These teachers have served as counselors to us and Worked hard for our benefit. They have given of their time and ability to aid us when we needed help, given us guidance through our problems, and encouragement when we became discouraged. Sometimes, however, their patience and endurance ran short. We often let them down and discouraged them. But, nevertheless, they stuck with us, being patient, understanding and helpful even when they had the urge to give up. The Senior Class owes everything it has to the Senior Class Advisors, and we, with deep thanks and gratitude, dedicate this page to them as a small token of our appreciation. But We know that we can never repay what these wonderful teachers have done for us. To you, our Advisors, we give our thanksl Mr. Thomas Waltz Mrs. Henrietta Wehagen E 74a 7960 Title Dedication Title Eaglet Staff Administration Faculty Seniors Senior Activities Underclassmen Athletics Clubs Oklahoma Band Activities Scramble Pages Conclusion Advertisements BHS Page 2-3 4-5 6-7 9-15 16-24 25-44 45-47 48-69 70-95 96-120 121-123 124-125 126-132 133-134 135 136-164 lie? 7?60 C S 'd S Bonk P Keco R Hill M Deszo C Mann C Rooh ROW TWO: B. A high school career is only one of these obstacles which must be surmounted. As the class of 1960 leaves this bridge and comes upon another, many of its members will discover roads that will direct their futures. The numerous experiences of their secondary education will soon be only pleas- ant memories. This annual is an attempt to make these memories live indefinitely. The 1960 Eaglet Staff MR. A., M.S. in LS. Library Club, N.H.S. LL l 24 The time has come, as it must, for the class of '660,' to leave Brooklyn High School. We will always remember it with deep appreciation and af- fection. Our class may claim a number of commendable distinctions. We were the first to use the facilities of the new ultramodern gymnasium. The class of 4'60', is the largest in Brooklyn annals and the first to graduate with over one hundred members. We helped to bring Brooklyn the first football cham- pionship since the sport originated at our school in 19412, the year of our birth. Scholastically we have been rated tops. During our freshman year our class began to be recognized for its ability. Our members took active part in all activities, academic and extracur- ricular. We were the first class to sponsor a fresh- man dance. Our sophomore year will long hold memories for all. Eight members of our class were inducted into the National Honor Society. Everoyne took active part putting on the annual sophomore dance. Clubs, sports and dramatics saw the result of our efforts. Our junior year was a busy but pleasant one. Members worked at the concession stand during football and basketball games to raise money for our treasury. We put on the highly successful Sadie Hawkins dance. All proceeds from our efforts went to the prom and banquet fund. It was our duty, a very pleasant one, to provide the Class of 1959 with a spectacular prom and banquet. This we did and created an enjoyable experience for U fl all. We were the last class to put on the traditional banquet. This year, our last, has been quite appropriate. Our members dominated all fields of sports, music, and dramatics, and clubs. Our able leadership has set an example for all underclassmen. A larger percentage of our class will be going on for further education than ever before. We wish to thank all our sponsors and teachers of past years for their advice and guidance. As we leave we wish as much luck and success as it was our fortune to possess, to all other graduates of Brooklyn High School. President: C. Shafer, Vice-President: M. Abbott, Secretary: L. President: R. Reed, Vice-President: K. Lazor, Secretary: J. Nelson, Treasurer: G. Chatham. The Sophomore Class was well ac- quainted with high school routine at the beginning of this year. They showed interest in sports, clubs, intramurals and plays. They have been planning for the future by raising money for the Junior- Senior Prom they will sponsor next year. This may be a good indication of the fine things to expect from this class in the future. 48 The Freshmen were new to high school life this year but acquainted themselves with it in no time. They familiarized them- selves with excellent academic ratings. They actively participated in many activities, among them, plays, clubs, music and intra- murals. They have started off in the spirit of things and We Wish them continued suc- cess in the future. President: D. Peddie, Vice-President: S. Caso, Secretary: J. Weinbrandt, Treasurer: D. Chmiel. l fix ' Q f y J UN IORS The Junior Class has been hard at work this year preparing for the annual prom they lVlust sponsor. lt was necessary for them to break tradition by not planning a banquet because of the financial cost. ln connection, with the prom they held the Sadie Hawkins dance which was highly entertaining. They also ran the concession stand at all football and basketball games. The Class of 60'7 wishes them luck and success. l YS JUNIOR OFFICERS President: L. Hiltbrand, Vice-President: J. It is unlike other sports in that it is played after the close of school in June. The normal season lasts from late June until early August. Since participation in this sport is necessary during the summer, only freshmen through seniors of the upcoming year are eligible. Brooklynis compe- tition consists of members of the West County League and other nonleague teams. During the 1959 season Brooklyn finished in second place, only to be bettered by Brecksville High School. Head Coach, Thomas Waltz, and Asssitant Coach Robert Marquardt are looking forward to a successful season in 1960. For the first time in seventeen years, since football originated at Brooklyn High School, the team gained the undisputed title of champs of the West County League. The only defeats were those of non-league teams, Mayfield and Rocky River. The Hurricanes were victorious in all league games. They especially enjoyed the triumphs over North Royalton, defending champs, and Strongsville, a long-standing rival. ln all games, not one team scored against Brooklyn during the second half. Chuck Gales, a senior, was nominated to the first string All-West County team. The Senior Class would like to believe that their contributions to the team helped Win the championship as a graduation gift. As almost everyone knows, most of the Senior Class was born into this world during 1942, when the first team was organized. It took the Senior Class of 1960 to put the needed spark and ability into the team. The annual Staff wishes Coach Bob Marquardt and his future teams much luck and success in coming years. 7?57 ?oaz'K4ZZ Scafaea BROOKLYN OPPONENTS 6 N. Z The 1959-60 basketball team had many obstacles to over- come this season. The team was small and lacked height. A large number of varsity players were lost in graduation last year. The team had winning spirit at all times but Was just bettered by some teams. Those few important victories were left in defeat and the team did not regain its West County cham- pionship. At the Bera Tournaments Brooklyn triumphed over Brtms- Wick. The team was lead by the outstanding marksmanship of Harvey Warner. The team included seniors Paul Sedley, Bob Mravetz, and Russ Villari. Although the 1960 season was championship material the student body and faculty of Brooklyn High School are proud to claim this team and admire their sportsmanship. Next year holds another season and the outlook appears bright. The Annual Staff wishes all the luck and success in the World to them. EDWARD POHJ ALA 'Wa-nity ROW ONE: B. Aber, D. Kleis, D. Il8 CHORUS The mixed chorus of Brooklyn High School truly deserves to be commended. lt gives many students an opportunity to express themselves through music. The chorus appears annually at many school functions. During Christmas, the members sing lovely hymns and carols at the Public Square in downtown Cleveland. They sponsor, in conjunction with the dramatics department, every other year, a musical. At the Spring Concert, pop music is their specialty. At Baccalaureate, their harmonious blending of voices may be heard. The chorus is understandably an excellent addition to the music department. ROW ONE: J. Franklin, F. Brown, C. Wright, J. Just as academic studies are part of a student's school career so are extracurricular activities. One form of this activity is intramural sports. Intramurals provide entertainment for boys as well as girls. They give the student an opportunity to relieve his tension and to express himself through sports. Intramurals are organized and sponsored by Mr. Henry C. Joy. They exist in many forms such as bowling, volleyball, basketball, and baseball. A keen sense of competition is created among the classes but still a good time is had by all. E K X E - f - f-- - f ,i vm- W- -'-'wmf+:15Qff-A 11 2 4 1 M iw QL , Mi.
