Groundbreaking Ceremoriies Foreword An empty school is just another building. WeBrooklyn Center High School students have had the privilege of bringing life to our school . Whatever comes in the future will always breathe the traditions we have established. In return, this school has helped to make us the kind of people we are, and regardless of what profession we go into, its effect upon us will remain. We, on the yearbook staff, dedicate this book to the throngs of students who will follow us, and hope that their years will be as wonderful and fruitful as our year, 1962, has been for us . Ralph L. McCartney Superintendent of Schools Our forefathers pioneered in a new 1and--we, in a new high school . They invaded a new hemisphere for adventure and accomplishment, anticipating thrills and hardships. We approached our adventure with the same anticipations. Just as did our fathers, we have found many challenges, some victories, and some de- feats . Some individuals have been and will be successful and some not . The victories are sweet, and the defeats teach valuable lessons if we but search for them . Our meager beginning with few classrooms and limited equipment has grown to total completion of the building. As each new facility has been added, we have thrilled at its excellence and utility. Perhaps we have appreciated it more for the waiting. We have learned that through determination and effort, time can'bring great satisfaction and accomplishments . I challenge you, the graduating class of 1962, the first from Brooklyn Center High School, to remember this conquest, these accomplishments, and these defeats . Use the knowledge and the skills you have gained to meet and conquer the obstacles you meet in your future life, just as your forefathers did when they developed this beautiful Mr. James O'Toole, assistant principal, is primarily con- cerned with the running of the lunch prOgram, the handling of discipline problems, and super- vision of school attendance . Principals Our principal, Mr. Wallace Ber- nards, has the entire responsi- bility of co -ordinating the school program so that the students are able to develop their interests , abilities, and aptitudes to the fullest extent under the guidance and direction of a competent teaching staff . Counselors Mr. Rodney Brannon and Miss Agnes Danzl serve as our school's coun- selors. Mr. Brannon handles the 7th, 9th, and 11th grades, while Miss Danzl counsels the 8th, 10th, and 12th grades. Besides juggling pro- grams and evaluating tests, the counselors are always there when a student needs a friend. Nirs. Nye, Mrs. Kokesh, and Mrs. Voss constitute the office staff. Mrs. Nye is secretary to Mr. Ber- nards and Mr. O'Toole. Mrs. Kokesh occupies and runs the main office, and Mrs. Voss is Mr. Mc- Cartney's secretary. Together they form a group which runs very efficiently. 19414, ; ,2 99mm w .54 , f? ,k .e g Mr. Billings, head librarian, instructs a student in the use of the card catalogue. Her step- children want her money and send her to the Cloisters, a sanitorium. Here she meets social misfits and decides that their shallow happiness is the contentment she wants. The first Brooklyn Center High School Magma Veritas Chapter of the National Honor So- ciety consists of fifteen top students of the senior and junior classes . The ten seniors and five juniors were required to have maintained a 3 .0 grade average during their high school years . The other requirements to be admitted are outstanding participation in school service, leadership, and character . The purpose is not only to recognize those students who have shown outstanding qualities in the many phases of school life, but to encourage many other students to raise their standards and to strive to be admitted to this honorary group. The Student Council made possible the introduction of the Honor Society to our school by inquiring and writing to the headquarters of the Honor Society and by paying the school membership fee. 43 Fleet-footed Football Fighters .. gfxadkggfmk ?;?;x 1,, Al? 2310,3311; , 'xaebww 337133: 329x; ROW 1: Roger Beyer, Dwight OISOn, Paul Hjelmborg, Gerry Olsen, George Bryan, Jim Hannay, Paul Taylor, Glenn Larson, Dick Folwick, Ken Pegg, Bill Price. Team Synopsis Under Coach Ron Stave, the football team emerged from the 1962 football season with an optimistic outlook for next year's team. Although the football team only blocked and passed its way to two victories, a steady improvement was shown from the first game's loss to the last game's triumph. Our team defeated Forest Lake, 12-0, and St. Francis, 9-0. ' Co-captains George Andrusko and Roger Youngdahl began practicing with the team at the end of the summer of 1961 in preparation for the crowded season. The first games with Centennial, Prior Lake, Breck, and Fridley resulted in defeats for us; however in the last two games as mentioned before, Brooklyn Center recovered with two valiant victories, permitting no points past our goal. Including the co-captains, nine seniors participated on the team. Many of the mem- bers of the A squad, and nearly all of the B squad will be returning next year, which undoubtedly will assure us several more successes since our team will con- sist of more experienced players . 48 Cross Country Compefes Courageously ROW 1: Jim Peterson, Dudley Thayer, Jim Keenan, Jim Williams, Bob Ledin, Dennis Potvin, Coach Robert Johnson. ROW 2: Pat Roberts, Tom Orne, Dick Crow, Ronald Strong, Howard Potvin, Donald Carlson. Team Synopsis The cross country team came out quite successfully as the season terminated. Out of ten meets, we won six and lost four. With junior, Richard Crow as captain, the team placed fourth in the Skyline Conference. Seniors on the team include Tom Orne, James Peterson, and Dudley Thayer. Richard Crow set the team record for the 1.7 mile with a 9:24. Cross country is often confused with track, but they are actually quite different . Cross country events consist of a 1.8 mile run across a selected field . Track consists of several different events. They include the mile run, relays, shot put, hurdles, and discus. Cross country is a fall sport, and track is in the spring. 49 Hoopsters Heroically . . . Although the basketball team was plagued by inexperience, our team constantly played their games with desire and hustle. More important than winning in our first year is the spirit and enthusiasm that the boys displayed. The entire basketball team is made up of underclassmen, so this team undoubtedly will be great in the future. B Squad ,V. e ROW 1: Doug Howe, Steve Jensen, Terry McLish, Gary Peterson. Brooklyn Center has the only gymnastic team in the Skyline Conference besides Osseo, so our meets had to be scheduled with other schools outside our conference. Out of ten meets, our team won five and lost five. Douglas Fagerhaugh proved to be the outstand- ing gymnast 0f the season. He was the North West free exercise champion, Class A, and the state champion in free exercise. In the Minnesota free exercise AAU meet, he captured third place. Armon Miller, Dale Kolstad, and Darryl Sodgren also placed high on the team. Armon Miller competes on the horse. The baseball team started out with a fairly good first season showing--a 2 and 6 league record. The Centaurs have had a changing season. They have shown that they have the ability to play good baseball, and yet on too many occasions they have opened the gates to a flood of runs at the very time when they have seemed to be on their way to solid Victory. There are no seniors 0n the team so there should be a much improved group after a season of American Legion ball, and because the pitchers are still developing our defense should be much tighter in the clutches next season. ROW 1: Tom Hartung, Mike Smith, Warren Graser, Larry Brunniger, Larry Wendell, Byron Johnson, Bob Benson. Our first year cheerleading squads deserve a great amount of credit. They began prac- ticing last summer learning new Cheers and executing them. When the football season started, the cheerleaders accompanied them to all the games. Every basketball game found the A and B squad cheerleaders receiving directions from their advisor, Miss Jacobsen. Penny Cederberg was captain of the A squad and Ruth Komperud was head of the B squad. Susan Mosely, Ginger Dragieff, Shirley Nelson, Adele Hendrickson. 62 . Pep Club Promotes School Spirit ROW 1: S.
