The summer was over, it hit me like bricks, My freedom had ended, my future was fixed. The freshmen all gathered and oozed through the door, On Roberts, on Akers, on Packard and more. We flowed down the halls, looking for classes, We waited in lines, we huddled in masses. Our schedules were wrong, the rooms were elusive, The stairs led nowhere, the seniors abusive. Elevator passes, a definite must Who was a poor lonely freshman to trust? I shuffled along, followed the bunch, How did I know they were going to lunch! I was supposed to be at the gym Climbing the walls, skinning my shin. Lunch was a problem, when should I go? First time or second, how would I know? A block, C block, or X block or D. The comings and goings were a mystery to me. Too early to school, too late for class, My sister assured me all this would pass. And just as I threw up my hands in disgust I saw then how easy it was to adjust. Who else?” “Were we like that?” “Like what?” “Like — “Let’s play high school!’ ” “No way — we were cooler than that.” “Don’t be so sure.” “We re not the babies anymore, you know.” “I KNOW.” “Were you friends with any sophomores last year?” “I don’t think so.” (a pause) “But we sure do know a lot of freshman this year.” “They look so little and there are so many.” “I remember upperclassmen telling me the only flack I would get for being a freshman would be from sophomores!” “That’s what I heard too.” “Look at that guy over there — what a total freshman.” “I suppose we should be nice. After all, we were there last year.” “Yeah, I suppose. But it would take all the fun away from being one step up.” Sarah Robson Class of ' 89 46 AKERS 143 Row One: Justin Willmont, Adam Con- viser, Kraig Ludensky, Meredith Melzer, Constantina Karidoyanes, Tina Gee. The doors stood there like an open mouth, waiting to devour every freshman that walked through them. You entered the building and were swallowed up by the hoardes of upperclassmen. Where’s the fourth floor? Which lunch is this? What’s an X block? Some struggled to be known, others wallowed in their anonymity. Most just plodded along, not reacting one way or another. The second time was easier. You had an entire year to your credit. You walked through those doors with your head held high. You didn’t read the Student Handbook this time . . . you knew you were right in the middle. This year it had become routine. The summer may as well have been a weekend and you had no trouble remembering your locker combination. The newest changes have been lunch increasing by ten minutes and getting your own mailbox. The words “the most important year of your high school career’’ begin to echo in your ears. Thoughts of “the college of your choice” find a little niche in the back of your mind. But you ' re not there yet. You’ll take that step when you come to it . . . I have learned from my experience that the key is to display your in- dividuality and do everything in your power to make sure that you are remembered. Here are some suggestions that will insure your success. Instead of the classic blue blazer and penny loafers , the appli- cant should sport a unitard to exhibit his coherent personality, wear studded rhinestones to flaunt his sparkling style, and fake animal fur to show his concern and commitment to wildlife preservation. To top off his irresistible outfit, the applicant should tattoo a picture of Ronald Reagan on his forehead to prove his devout patriotism. The following are some ' eye-opening ' ' answers to those classic interview questions. What can you contribute to our school? — I will contribute my left ear lobe and my leather bell-bottoms. What are your hobbies? I have the world ' s largest defective Tupperware collection. What do you want to major in? — The history of bilingual can collectors of Central America. What extracurricular activities have you been involved in? - I started the Mr. Ty-D-Bowl fan club and the PIBUAT coali- tion. That is: Pseudo Intellectual Bellydancers United Against Tofu. Do you have any special talents we should know about? — I can twiddle my thumbs, make Spam from scratch, and swallow goldfish, but I do not do windows. What makes you unique from all our other applicants? — I am the Messiah!!!!! As you might have guessed, the admissions staff gets on their hands and knees to beg this applicant to contribute color and diversity to their humble college campus. If all you underclassmen follow the enlightened path of this truly original applicant, I promise that you will be accepted at the college of your dreams. THEY’RE OUR TEACHERS 158 Every year over 1000 students participate in sports at BHS. Every day we meet after school for a practice or a match. Some afternoons we spend riding on yellow school buses, other afternoons we push ourselves to the limit. We are no longer independent; we are all working toward a common goal. We discover new skills that we never thought were possible, channeling our hopes and energies into wins. School is in the back of our minds as each team unites against its opponents. Every night we return home tired, but still determined. The end results of sports are many: a winning season, a Suburban League title, a trip to the States, a climactic victory over Newton North, or a varsity jacket. More importantly, we all learn to enjoy playing the sports that we have chosen and to work with our teammates. The encouragement of our coaches and the cheers of the spectators inspire us to represent BHS to the best of our abilities. 161 rx -••• ■ SPRING SPORTS DO EXIST .u±- j| i K lf PU ?■ «|y fP ■ ™ w ait 4 ia . i fc S il HMBCTjflBiGJWWK-y % ' :: xkK i BOYS’ SOCCER VARSITY TOP TO BOTTOM, LEFT TO RIGHT: Peter Lashley, Justin Nichols, Jonathan Gwiazda, Dylan Pringle, Ira Cohen, Dave Seder, Minh Viet-Tran, Scott Nader, Middle Row . . . For some it was a depressing sea- son; dreams of a State Championship fell to dreams of a Suburban League Championship which never materialized. Some things just didn’t go our way; Lu’s hip, and Yoav’s ankle, and Danny’s body, and Kevin’s finger, and The Waltham game, and so on . . . But who could complain, really? For the second year in a row Brookline put together a really good team. And what about the triumphs? Keane and Newton i North, Dougie’s 30 yard goal, Diego’s falling side volley goal, Jordan’s two miracle goals to beat Waltham with 5 minutes left to play, and the heroic I battle against 1 seed Plymouth-Carver. Didn’t all i that hard work mean more than a Championship? j Wasn’t there more to waking up at 7 A. M. to run, more to the team Spaghetti dinners, more to the 2 years of almost daily soccer? Didn’t we have a good time? And above all, Didn’t we (admit it) learn a whole lot about | ourselves? . . . and isn’t that what it’s all about? Hold your heads up, Brookline, you earned it. You may think we are being just a little sarcastic, and we are. On the other extreme, we were a serious bunch of totally cool soccer women We were led and influenced by our rookie coach, Lana Nesmith, who always stuck with us. We have picked up Brockton as a new rival, but we will never lose to Waltham under the lights! Dudes, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. That year we had four members. This year we had quadrupled in size. That first year I went from not being able to make it around the pond to being able to compete, largely motivated by “that hot shot Tehani — the freshman prodigy. The next two years were growing years. Tehani won a suburban league title in her sophomore year and I followed in my junior year. The team began to grow . . . races were won . . . team spirit formed. Running may be an individual sport, but to win you need even more than internal motivation — you need the support of the team. Tehani and I leave the team next year, but each of us has left a piece of ourselves here. We expect that the team will continue to thrive and win and grow, and that the team will be a place for young runners to find new dimensions of themselves. Use the sport well. Field Hockey ' 86 This Year BHS sported its best team ever with a 5-7-2 record. We worked hard over the summer at camp which most of us attended. Camp not only taught us useful skills and brought us together, but also entertained us with its fine (male) staff. We beat Arlington, last year ' s 1 team, and Bishop Fenwick. We showed determination and presented a challenge to the league ' s powers, Malden and Everett. With our new focus on offensive, this year’s squad, Emily B.. Alex, Emily H.. Lisa, Gwen, Chantel, Pilar. Helena, Jessica, and sometimes even Nicole, got it together to put the ball into the net (We used our sticks, the other teams used other methods.) Our awesome defense: Jen. Donna, Dina, Nicole, and our goalie Jane (awesome), we managed to keep the ball out of our net, against aggressive players and Chahleen. 172 — Lisa and Nicole JgnPjl FOOTBALL Varsity and Junior Varsity Row One: John O’Leary, Brian Dockray, T.J. It was obvious that the 1986 girls ' volleyball team was not made of the giants that Brookline has been used to. In fact, this year no player exceeded 5 ' 5 . Anyone who has interacted with this young team will know the distinct characteristics it possesses. The team consists of all natural athletes. Because of this we have succeeded in showing the Suburban League that, with a little more experience, Brookline will be a threat to its strongest competition. One thing that keeps the team together is our ability to get along and always have a good time. We could not have achieved any of this without our talented coach, Ellen Lewis. Some things the team will remember about the season: My buddy!!!! Can I have some purple skitters? Where did Steve hit Nancy? The Team, led by that most disillusioned of men, Scooter Sitzmark Butchart, in conjunction with Captain Julie Hermos, came on strong from the rigorous dry-land training sessions. The Team shredded its way to strong placings in every meet, including The State Cross-Country Championships, where The Team achieved a moral victory. Spirits were high on the bus ride home. The downhill races, held on Prospect Peak, showcased the awesome depth of Brookline’s talent. The Girls in particular su rpassed any challenge posed by their foreign counterparts, on slope of hill or flat of field. The cross country meets were useful as opportunities for demonstrating skinny ski dominance, hobnobbing with some of the suburban Elite, and dining in elegance at the Langlaufer Cafe. See you in twenty years 264 jflaffiCc HA JUffr Kl tt Wm TUOoffi Q Ka.A a 7a Uu-VatIU Kx Zj, 2 WW} It’s been said at the end of the first grade, and can be heard at the end of the twelfth. “No more pencils, no more books, and no more teacher’s dirty looks.” While it holds true for some, for others it will begin again in the fall at college. Yet, it is still a time to celebrate the end of our stay at the Brookline High School. For most of us, it has been an enlightening four years. From two plus two and Lexington and Concord we ' ve progressed to linear equations and Vietnam. Not only have we grown academically, but socially as well. We have established new friendships, broken old ones and tested present ones. There have been good times and bad times. Some of us have even shared and fought with an everlasting friend, our conscience I believe it is also time to praise and thank some people, for reaching the end of this journey could not have been done without their help. They have given us life. Some have cried with us and others laughed with us. They believed in us and somehow made us believe in ourselves. We owe many of them more than we can possibly think of. I thank my parents, grandparents, and brothers. Their love and support will always be appreciated and treasured. I thank my friends. Be they Craig and Val from first grade, Katy and David from fifth, Dylan and Jody from seventh, or Dan, Laurie, Jun and Becky from ninth through twelfth. The many I have come to know have been trustworthy, honest and caring. They have made it all the more worthwhile. Let us continue what we have started. I thank not only the teachers that I have had but all teachers in general. Their effort, creativity, and stamina has been the backbone of education. I do not envy their jobs nor the stress involved with educating but I applaude their courage. Now, I must end with a few words from a man who has always been my hero: “So we are all idealists. We are all visionaries. Let it not be said of this Atlantic generation that we left ideals and visions to the past, not purpose and determination to our advisaries. We have come too far, we have sacrificed too much, to disdain the future now. And we shall never remember what Goethe told us — that the ‘highest wisdom, the best that mankind ever knew ' was the realization that ' he only earns his freedom and existence who daily conquers them anew.
