Our success was, in many ways, unexpected but it seemed to build upon itself as the season progressed. Our thanks go out to Mr. Carter for channeling our energies and will to win. Also, thank you to everyone who came out to watch us and shared in our big victo- ries over Newton and B.C. High. Coach: Ronald Divencenzo Golf 1985 The 1985 Brookline High Golf Team came into I the season with high expectations. Led by co- captains and four-year varsity starters Matt ij (Lefty) Lefkowitz and Scott (ClifD Carter, the I ' team ' s chances for success were good. The final record of 7-7-1 was indicitive of the up and down - season. Although there was no Suburban League if Championship, we managed to have some more great times. Coach Ron DiVencenzo was able to enjoy the I 1985 “hockey invasion during this season. With the addition of number 3 man Rich (Aldo)J- Sheridan, number 4 man Kevin Ford and alternate j Joe Marco, the team was solidified. The varsity squad is rounded out by senior Dan (don’t call me i Tim) Harrington, Tom (Mad Mac) McNamera, and Phil Gordon. Although there are only 2 returning lettermen, the future does not look bleak. With a devoted JV squad and plenty of help on its way with up coming elementary school “golf rats”, Mr. D. just might be a worthy candidate for coach of the year honors in about 1989. Field Hockey 1985 We would have gone to the States if: — We had more than three returning Varsity players — More than one mother showed up for our home games — We didn’t eat and drink more than we ran — We had actually done “something splendid” in- stead of just talking about it — Pilar had wounded more of our opponents — We had more “pig piles” in front o f the goal — There wasn’t a “Cha-Leen on every team — We could clear away the cows that grazed on our “pasture” before the games — The refs didn’t need bifocals — If only our family and friends still loved us after our losses — We could arrive for home games before our opponents O.K. (sigh), we didn’t go to the States. But we should be remembered for our spirit, our unity, and the fun we had. It can’t be denied that we all did our “Personal best, and that’s really fine, it’s really O.K.” We’d like to thank Ms. Carol Gregory for her unyielding support, and we forewarn the opponents of 1986 to anticipate “Better peanut butter!” Regina Perry Phoebe Moores JUNIOR VARSITY Row One: Cynthia Crisafolli, Helena O ' Brien, Dina Goodman, Lyla Lee, Sharon Mally, Caroline Lee Wing. The team proved to themselves and to the rest of the league that we could be competitive and win. Our strong group of seniors showed their leader- ship to the underclassmen, who will carry our new- winning tradition for many years to come. We had eight first team All-Surburban All- Stars, the most on any team in the Surburban League this year. The players were Billy Edwards, Sam Figler, Rene Elysee, Jay Kuropatkin, Ron Shelborne, and tri-captains Uthman Cavallo, Eric Falzon, and Peter Meade. BOY’S GYMNASTICS 1986 The 1986 edition of Brookline Boys’ Gymnastics was loaded with talent and desire. Although we finished with a dis- appointing 4-6 record, the foundation was laid for a serious state contender in 1987. Highlighting the season was Brook- line’s seven medals at the South League Meet. Four of those medal winners w ent on to compete in the Eastern Massachusetts State Meet of which one, Dave Ginsburg, went on to place an in- credible seventh place on still rings. The future for Brookline Gymnastics holds nothing but promise as all of this year’s medal winners except one will be returning next season. With a lot of hard work and strong leadership from new r captains, Ginsburg and Lu Yoder as w ell as stand outs Peter Grand, Alain Frechon, Nathan Chickery, and Ed Moy, the team should take the states and cream Milton (Gerry who?). KICK SOME $! and remember to work on your “perfect bodies” (sag) Special thanks to the girl’s team for making practices bearable. You all get 10’s for your wedgies! GOOD LUCK! BOYS TRACK 1986 Not long ago in a pavillion high in the sky there lived a very merry band of traeksters, otherwise known as the SKULLYMEN! Led by their hawking skullymaster, Obie RON Dong, and his constant cries of “lift,” “work this straight!” “be a sprinter!” these fierce Skullymen terrorized the Suburban League. They had but one mission: to overcome the dark forces. CAMBRIDGE!! As in the past, however, evil prevailed and the fearless Skullymen were sent packing with their tights hanging low between their legs. Defeated they were, losers they were not. Behind the often absentee leader- ship of their courageous captains, Stretch, B’ ski, and The Thirdleg, the team accomplished its SECOND most important mission: To be damn good and to have a rockin’ time. Thanks to the valiant efforts of fellow skullyers General Alec S., Jumpin’ Joe, Mike Fathead, Matty-O, Tony “gimme water” Lees, Will “I’ve had my fill” Robb, Josh “iceman” Becker, Georgie porgie L. Tweedle-dee and Tweedle- dum Gillis, Josh “I give my all” S., Chris L., Andy, Mahk “Hahvahd” Selwyn, Randy, and all future Skulleyers. This team will be remembered as the freshest, most desirous team ever to hit the lanes. Thanks and Good Luck, The Skully-caps P.S. The loss of Eric to an ankle injury and the disappearance of Dave didn’t help our cause much. We held together though, pulling in third in the league and fifth in the section. Through it all, Eric kept us entertained with his | razor-sharp interviews of Jeff Levy, while Davey was always late to weigh- ins because he was asleep in the wres- tling room; Mike Dolan never stopped talking about his mother’s apple pies, until he had to cut weight, that is; Jeff Horwitz had to gain weight to make his class; Mark, Ari, Jimmy, Seung and Phil — the Killer Flees; and Sam beating up” on the lower class wrestlers. It’s a time for reflec- tion of things past, and more importantly, a realistic look into our future. BHS’s unique form of government, a partici- patory democracy which encourages all voices to be heard, allows for uncensored discussion between teachers, students and administrators. Issues this year have included everything from “Should political banners be allowed to hang from school walls?” to “Should exams be scheduled the day after the Superbowl?” To fully realize our potential, we ' re seeking more effective methods of communication throughout the school commu- nity, and working towards representation that truly reflects Brookline High School’s diversity. SENIOR STEERING It has been a year of planning, fundraising, and contemplating that day in June when the Class of 1986 will become alumni of B.H.S. The Kick-Off dance proved to be a hugh success. October 31 saw the Steering Committee painting faces for Halloween and selling jack-o-lantern cookies and popcorn balls. No sooner was the face make-up wiped away than the seniors were busily selling candy. Fortunately, members of the school community seemed to have perpetual sweet-teeth. The class also held a Senior Class Breakfast. After vacation the Committee members embarked on preparations for Carnation Day, February 14. The profits from this major fundraiser would be key to the Prom’s affordability and style. JUNIOR STEERING A voluntary group of students under the leadership of two teachers advisors and the Junior Housemaster formed to plan the activities of the junior class. 177 DRAMA SOCIETY The Drama Executives. Secretary: Ellen Lurie Trying to escape her sex symbol image in such films as “The Virgin Mary,” she is now on Broadway play- ing the wall in “Romeo Juliet.” Publicity: Chris Hummel The next James Bond. Despite a rumor that David Prowse played the character, he really was Darth Vader. Executive Member: Will Sandstead Will has never had a decent job — which makes his million dollar man- sion in France rather suspicious. He in- sists that this has nothing to do with the Reverend Billy Christian Religious Network. 178 TECH CREW JAZZ BAND The Tech Crew dedicates this year’s caption to all those who have ever inspired us, such as Iain Ryrie, Daniel Moore, Jimmy Hoffa, Punky Brewster, the Refrigerator, The Cleveland Indians, Rev. Ernst Angry, and our new owners, the Beatrice Corporation. FLAG SQUAD 179 SCIENCE CLUB MATH TEAM We are the group of students who compete against other schools by doing math problems. We have five meets a year at which we each participate in three ten-minute rounds of three questions. Any student who enjoys mathematical challenges is welcome to join. Brookline High ' s Math Team finished fourth in both the state and New England last year. We hope to maintain or improve our standing this year. COMPUTER CLUB TACTICAL GAMES The Science Club is a small group of humanoid life forms which is growing much in the same way as fungus would, through the school community. We seek to inform the school community through lectures, experiments, and field trips. We are planning to use our newly acquired laser to create holograms and to conduct other experiments. The Science Team, a division of the Science Club, is currently competing in the first Science Olympiad . . . and wasting the muthers!! Our long range plans include: building a full-size fusion reactor, harnessing anti-matter to power the science department coffee machine, and most importantly, devising a universal theory to explain all scientific phenomenon known to man, in- cluding “bottle music”. Key Club is a service organization of B.H.S. The Kiwanis affiliated group has one of the largest memberships in the school and uses this great resource to raise money for scholarships and assist elderly, hospital, and youth organi- zations through volunteer work. Writers Company is a recently established literary club in the high school. The club meets to discuss prose, poetry and short stories written by the members as well as pieces done by other students of B.H.S. A magazine is periodically published. BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER The Big Brother Big Sister Program assists the incoming freshmen class and all newly enrolled upperclass students in their exciting but sometimes frustrating efforts to adjust to B.H.S. 181 LATIN CLUB FAIRNESS COMMITTEE 182 T.W.A. seeks to increase the level of awareness in B.H.S. to the peoples of the Third World and to issues of prejudice in our own community. The group hopes more students will make connections between multi-cultural issues and those in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Through guest speakers, workshops, and responsible social action, the group expects to involve a great number of students with these concerns. FAR EAST CLUB The F ar East Club founded over a decade ago, is a club filled with enthusiasm and support from its members. During each year, the F.E.C. holds several bake sales which help to pay for field trips to the movies, museums, and restaurants near the high school. Moreover, the F.E.C. is basically a club for those who are interested in doing activities together, throughout the year. NUCLEAR EDUCATION PROJECT The Nuclear Education Project is a group of BHS students working to educate themselves and the school community on the nuclear issue and taking action to prevent nuclear war and stop the arms race. BLACK AWARENESS 183 T.O.S.C.O.B. HORSEBACK RIDING CLUB The Orogenic Scaling Club of Brookline is a group of young people dedicated to the growth and enrichment of the individuals mind and body through experience and adventure in the great outdoors. Led by the ever dedicated and prestigious Mr. “Rusty” Forsythe and our president Aliza Shapiro, T.O.S.C.O.B. trips vary in diversity from hiking, biking, and snowshoeing to canoeing, the only limitations being the desires of the group and how much gas we can afford. SKI CLUB The Horseback Riding Club allows riders, beginners and advanced alike to develop their skills. 184 TABLE TENNIS CLUB NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society selects members on the basis of their outstanding academic achievement, good citizenship and service to the school community. The society provides a tutoring service for the students of the school and participates in fundraising activities to provide a scholarship. The Table Tennis Club is a club which offers a unique opportunity to engage in competition and to enhance one’s interest in Table Tennis.
