It is designed for 100 students who want an opportunity to take more responsi- bility for their own education. Take care guys, Brad Skillman 121 GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY The 1984 season brought about several changes for the Girls’ Track team. First, Mr. Schluntz, head of the athletic department, recognized the need for a coach and assigned Ms. Allyson Toney to head the team. Ms. Toney brought new hope and life to the team while running with us. The team also underwent changes in its membership, it lost 3 members and gained two, Zoe Stringham and Mara Motherway. Our first few meets were frustrating because we were unable to qualify with only 4 runners. Nonetheless, we continued to run through the hills and rocky terrain to reach our own goals, and with each race our individual performances improved. The season wore on and we were able to recruit Joanna Osier, Cyndy Lyons, Lillian Moy, and Gwen Field, our group of 4 had evolved into a team of 8. The team is young, made up of only sophomores and freshmen, and next season with our newly gained experience and new runners, we look forward to offering some serious competition to our opponents in the Suburban League. So watch out Newton, Brookline is on its way. — Tehani Collazo 122 GOLF Row one: Scott Carter, Mike Olafson, Dean Jumes, Tim Harrington, Dan Harrington, Matt Leftkowitz. Thanks to all you guys for all the time, effort, and sweat put into making this a terrific season. For those of us who will move on next year, we hope it’s to bigger and better things. For those we leave behind, we hope you guys have more great years to follow. Don’t forget: G-E-T-P-S-Y-C-H-E-D Get Psyched ooo ooo Get Psyched!!!! Thanks! We started the season with only 4 seniors, and inexperienced underclassmen. The teams inexperience and lack of strength proved to be a major factor in the outcome of the season. Even though we were losing a lot of games, there was not one point in the season where we stopped giving 100%. As they always have, coach Ron DiVincenzo and assistant coach Richard Freccero provided incentive to keep improving, and always believed that we could win. We are hopeful for next year ' s team which will be lead by 21 goal scorer Rich Sheridan, and linemates Tom Sutherland and Jason Rathbone. Other returning towards will be Brian Slavin, Mike Keaveny. Bill Shanda, Tom Heffernan, Danny Teahan, and scoring sensation Chris McGourty. All of the Defense is returning with the exce ption of Kevin Kelley who should go in the first round of the N.H.L. draft this year. Once again the Goaltending looks strong for next year. Even though the team had only four returning members from last year ' s team, an ncredible number of new gymnasts joined In. This year ' s team was the biggest that Brookline has had in at least five years. And, considering the lack of experience that this group of gymnasts had, it was an excellent season for Brookline Boys ' Gymnastics. Getting people to join gymnastics was the easy part this season, the hard part was keeping them interested in coming back. But, it seems as though this group of people is eage r and waiting for next season to begin. The team is only losing two seniors, and next yea r . under the new captain Jason Wong, the team will have power and depth. Coupling the Boys team with the amazing Girls ' team. Brookline Gymnastics will hopefully get greater respect than it has been getting the past couple of seasons. Finally, 1 d just like to mention that this team has made me very proud to be their captain I want to thank our coach Steve Gosdaman for making this season so special. Thank you and good luck. Sincerely, Eduardo Ovalle BOYS’ GYMNASTICS 140 1 SKI TEAM Last year David Gordon. Jan Larsen, and Josh Clayton- Felt decided that the school needed a ski team. Starting a ski team at Brookline High had been tried before without any success, but these three finally made it happen The ski team ' s first coach. Newel Ficker. helped them get started and taught them the basics of racing They were allowed to join the Massachusetts Bay Ski League for a one year trial period. Although the team was the worst in the combined cross coun- try slalom league, the students interest in the team con- vinced Mr. Schluntz and the school committee to award the team varsity status for the 1 984-1985 school year This year, with a new coach from a high school in New Hampshire — Scott Butchart. and a score of new faces, we set out once again to prepare for another season. At the outset, we had to contend with many problems. Instead of real racing bibs, we were issued forgotten basketball jerseys The bus to the meets was either late or didn ' t show at all And there was always a shortage girls for the team Vet we showed promise from the start, more than 40 people showed up for our first meeting After that we dedicated ourselves to getting in shape by working out and running at least three times a week Our first downhill meet went really well with excellent per- formances by Philip Gordon. Tim Sanville. Ben Mcgraw, Captain Steven Blank. It ' s no big deal because we know we deserved to win more. Our only fault (well, not our only fault) was that we were too small of a team. We might have done better: if Sandy hadn’t been on crutches, if Laura hadn ' t got the flu, if Lisa wasn ' t hurting with her taped ankle, if Susan didn’t slack off her senior year, if Sharon would have believed she did her best, if Nicole hadn ' t graduated, if the pavillion didn ' t give shin splints, if we had gotten our baton passes to work, or if we could have found a two miler who ran sub-eleven, jumped 5 4 and liked running the relay. — To the track team next year we leave all the problems and most of the good times. We are a group of students interested in Science and we wish to learn more about the world around us and the principles on which the world works. We sponsor different sorts of trips to scientifically oriented places such as Harvard, M.I.T., various museums, laboratories, and so forth. Also we conduct experiments, lectures and science contests. Math Team Strategic Simulations Club I Latin Club The Latin Club promotes interest and enthusiasm in classical culture. Projects include a Saturnalia banquet, participation in the Mass, and National Junior Classical League. Far East Club The Far East Club consists of a small group of students who participate in group activites-movies, bake sales, weekend trips, luncheons, and sports. In addition, these students have the chance to meet kids from other Asian student Clubs. Spanish Club Because we are truly international this year, we have tried to incorporate many aspects of Latin American culture into our activities. However, our main goal this year has been to bring hispanic culture to the high school (ie. the film ‘El Norte”) Black Awareness Club International Students Club Le Cercle Francais The French Club is a tres chic group of kids. This year, we had a frisbee game with the Latin Club. Our annual crepe party is always a big hit. We also see French films. Our brunches and dinners are a gourmet’s treat. Sur tout, tout va tres bien! The International Students Club is a social group for BHS students who have come from other countries. This year the club has about 40 members, from 15 countries. Through this club, students can meet each other, develop a circle of friends, and make an impact on the school as a group. We have picnics, roller skating, parties, cultural activities an d trips. 1 179 Horseback Riding Club The club allows riders, beginners and advanced alike to develop their skills. This year we have been very successful in getting beginners to ride on a regular basis and also in having a stable group of advanced riders which we hope will compete as a team. Besides handling horses, and riding, the club also attends Hunt and Dressage — Showing Events, movies, and demonstrations. Ski Club Table Tennis Club The Table Tennis Club is a group of people who play ping-pong, trying to improve their skills and meet other players, in an attempt to win various tournaments and prizes sponsored by the club. T.O.S.C.O.B. The Orogenic Scaling Club of Brookline, is an outdoor group dedicated to the growth and enrichment of the individual through experience and adventure in the great outdoors. T.O.S.C.O.B trips vary in diversity from hiking, snowshoeing, and biking, to canoeing, the only limitations being the desires of the group. Sailing Club Amnesty International Amnesty International is a social action group dedicated to freeing ‘prisoners of conscience” and against the use of capital punishment. B.A.S.E. Club Marching Band Writers Company Writers Company is a recently established literary club in the high school. The club meets to discuss prose, poetry and short stories written by the members as well as pieces done by other students of BHS. A magazine is periodically published by us, and professional writers have been guest speakers at some of our meetings. 182 Nuclear Education Project The Nuclear Education Project is a non-partisan group that works to educate its members and the greater high school community on a variety of issues directly surrounding the arms race.lt works on the basis that those who are educated about the nuclear arms race may develop more intelligent and well based opinions on it. Members are then encouraged to express their nuclear-political beliefs, whatever they may be. Students For Political Understanding Students For Political Understanding is a group that assists in having political speakers visit Brookline High. The club meets often to discuss current events and how to educated other students on moderate to conservative viewpoints. Tech Crew Not to be confused with the pampered, glitzy show-biz personalities in the Drama Society, the men of the Tech Crew (otherwise known as “techies”) specialize in the dirty work never read about in People Magazine. Braving high voltages, dizzying heights, complex machinery, and the often brutal wrath of I. Ryrie, the Tech Crew is revered by the school community for getting the job done right. Techies are available for plays, mm.:- i cultural events, assemblies, amateur beauty pageants, and anything else one could conceivably do in Roberts Auditorium.
