Frost Thomas A. Ferguson Meet the new boss, Same as the old boss. P.T Four short years. Last year Choir and Ensemble performed at three of the elementary schools, the second being Lawrence, my esteemed alma mater. There were six members of the Ensemble who also went to Lawrence, Including my brother and three of his closest friends, all seniors. It was quite a sight to see those four, who were on the verge (it was April) of completing a whole segment of their lives, perform beautifully for their former teachers who had seen them leave four years ago as children and now saw them return as young adults. Just a short while ago they were so small and young, and all of a sudden they were there, in formal dress, handsome men and beautiful women, radiating maturity, self-confidence and poise. It all brought home to me what education really means, in four years at Brookline High school each of these kids had found his or her niche, the things that they were really good at, and they had latched onto those activities and grown and matured with them and drawn out the excellence that had been dwelling inside of them all along. Think about it. we ' ve all done the same thing, found a place for ourselves here, and it has meant a lot. The teachers — they watch the process unfold, they facilitate it. High School is the place where you begin to find out who you are. Education in itself is that entire process, one that hopefully never ends. To think that we won ' t be a part of BHS next year, that the everything will continue to function without us, is very scary because for the last few months we have been very important people in a very important institution. Whatever we have learned though, we will take with us when we leave, and that is what makes it all worthwhile. Patricia Ferris Harrison A. They want to get to know me as a person. They want to know all about me in two hundred words or less. What do they really want? Do they want to know how embarrassed I am when I remember how drunk I got at my first C.Y.O. dance as a freshman? Or how long it took me to learn that school dances were dull (but that everyone goes anyway)? Do they want to know how long it takes to clean up a house at the end of the weekend after someone ' s parents took a vacation? Or how many people you can fit in a station wagon on a sunny Saturday morning? Or how long it takes four girls to change a tire at midnight on a Friday? Do they want to know how much fun Mr. G ' s class was? Or how many times I fell asleep in Math? Or how far in advance I studied for exams Senior year? Did I study? Or how much I appreciated doing detention for being thirty seconds late for A-Block’ Do they want to know how I spent the mornings that carnations were given out wondering if he” sent one? Or about yelling at skinny runners who went by our soccer practices? Or what went on in the back of the lacrosse bus? Do they care how much I am going to miss Brookline but how much i want to get out of here? (Does that make sense?) i look back at the still blank application. No, somehow I don ' t think any of that is what they expect. I guess they really want to know me. So, here goes. Seems as If we just said hello. What do I remember from my four years here? Do I remember anything? I remember graduating from elementary school and not being able to wait to be up at THE HIGH SCHOOL. Mixed feelings of anxiety wonder, and fake confidence took over my body as I mounted the steps saying. Give me a break, it ' s only freshmen today. The stories of the fourth floor had. as usual, reached the incoming freshmen. Being a bit uneasy, I parted with my friends (freshmen never walk to school alone), and began my search for the fourth floor and my homeroom. And yes, I did go up a wrong staircase before I found it! I took a seat. Nobody was saying a word! Even moving made me uneasy. Mr. Becker (a homeroom teacher that stayed two days before deserting us) passed out handbooks, white schedule sheets, and took attendance. For an hour we sat there, silent and uneasy, stealing glances at familiar and unfamiliar faces and watching the clock We were faced with study halls, freshman group, library passes, closed campus, and freshman gym — being a freshman but never looking like one and hearing all of the stereotypes about freshmen that never seemed to fit me My first year of high school, filled with uncertainty, changes, and growth, was over soon after its arrival Deborah Anne Murphy What is a friend? All that comes to my mind when l think of Sophomore year is not being a freshman anymore, having my choice of gyms, and having a third homeroom teacher. Homeroom was a bit different that year, we no longer sat in the chairs, but on the chairs, and desks, and on the floor. I brought food everyday from my B Block cooking class and the boys still threw paper airplanes out of the window like in eighth grade. Junior year Finally an upperclassman, I thought sitting in homeroom on the first day (one of the only days l went to homeroom). Yet another homeroom teacher! Faced with a schedule of Honor Chem, Honor u.S. History and Mr. Reynolds (who was about to meet his second Potter in two years), everyone groaned in unison and went off to A Block. Chem turned out to be not so bad ' (If you called it fun, classmates would think that you were trying to get in good with the teacher — or that you kept a Chem textbook in the bathroom for light reading). History was fun (How can Mr. Cradle turn a terrible subject into something you enjoy?) And Mr. Reynolds only called me Wende twice. And then it happened! Finals over with, l took off for Spain dreaming of second semester, Senior slump, and finally learning to drive fears of college essays, mid-year school reports, APPLICATIONS, APPLICATIONS, AP- PLICATIONS. Stephen zeh Johan Zwaan You, you are on the road Must have a code that you can live by. And so, become yourself Because the past Is just a goodbye. Teach your children well, their father’s hell did slowly go by And feed them on your dreams, the one they pick, the one you ' ll know by. Don ' t you ever ask them why, If they told you you would cry, So just look at them and sigh, and know they love you. And you, of the tender years, can’t know the fears that you elders grew by. And so, please help them with your need. They seek the truth before they can die, Teach your parents well, Their children ' s hell will slowly go by. And feed them on your dreams The one they pick, the one you ' ll know by. Don ' t you ever ask them why, If they told you you would cry, So just look at them and sigh, And know they love you. — Crosby, Stills, Nash Young Two camp counselors once sang this song to a motley group of teenagers with whom they were spending an incalculably fun Febru- ary vacation in the frozen waste- lands of Western Massachusetts. They said it summed up their pur- pose, their reasons for spending that time with us. In four years I ' ve come to see how right they were and how those words apply to the people here, in these hallowed halls. Our teachers have done more than illuminate concepts of the Italian Renaissance and drill the definition of the limit of a sequence into our skulls. They have, without really knowing it, shown us their dreams, their ideas, their values, their lives, we have spent four years being shown how people different from our parents live and think, and we can internalize that and draw from it what we might want for ourselves. We begin to see what we want to learn. As people, our teachers have given us a lot, and nothing could be more important. I teach therefore l am. — unknown 59 SENIOR DIRECTORY Abdelbary, Ekbal, 82 Ivy St 4 02146 Abrahams, Debra, 55 Sumner Rd 02146 Abramowitz, Adam, 89 Hyslop Rd 02146 Adamsky, Robert, 129 Addington Rd Each with a unique contribution to the success of theirteam, and all engrossed with obtaining a common goal . . VICTORY!!! 70 Athletes: After spending a long day in class, athletes are required to draw upon previously unknown re- serves of energy. More than once a fleeting feeling of regret surfaces in an athlete, who is far beyond the point of exhaustion, when the ruthless coach demands, one more lap. The exhilaration of per- sonal achievements makes all of the hours of sacri- fice well worth the investment. The dedication associated with Brookline athletes is illustrated by rigorous early morning swim workouts, excruciating double session prac- tices, and the runners determination to train in rain, snow, sleet, or a nuclear holocaust. All the athletes require both mental and physical firmness developed by a continual effort to better the team. Through each season, every athlete obtains a sense of pride that is expressed by the persever- ance and devotion associated with their commit- ment. 71 Girls’ Soccer . . . Beauty, eh? SOCCER 1983 This year the girls ' varsity soccer team, coached by the incomparable Cabe Megail, reknowned Irishman and John Wayne impersonator, rose valiantly in the Suburban League to capture third place. Never has such an incredible bunch of crazies, gathered under the auspices of a first year coach, produced so much. The eleven (11) seniors (count them) Kathy, Danielle, Hanya, Beth, Lisa, Kristen, Nique, Rachel, Liz, Darcey, and Nancy, seven of them, in their third year of varsity play, were supplemented by an incredibly talented group of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, including Michele Walsh, Krista Wachter, Sara Dwyer, Sally Lincoln, Maeve Costin, and Nadia Hall. Two standouts were senior goalie Hanya Bluestone, known for her multi-faceted talent (she once scored while playing goal — it was a penalty kick though), and Sally Lincoln. None of us will be surprised if Sally ends up at the bottom of the Reservoir wearing cement shoes, for her vicious slide tackles have won her many sworn enemies throughout the Surburban League. Everyone contributed to our victories, the most memorable being a 2-1 defeat of Lexington when Danielle Campana scored in the last ten seconds, a 6-1 rout of Quincy in which everyone had a great time, and a 2-0 first time ever defeat of Brockton. (Revenge is so sweet!) What we will truly remember, though, is the great camaraderie that developed during the season. We truly had a great time being with each other. SOCCER 1983 Even at tne Beginning of try outs it was apparent tnat 1983 would Oe a year where the rapid growth of soccer in America finally caught up with Brookline raced with the decision of either upgrading the quality of the program, or retaining the tradition of letting every one play. Coach Mohacsy remained true to his commitment to winning and designated 1983 a Building year. Many juniors and seniors unaware of the vast improvement in the quality of soccer throughout the state were astonished when a skillful group of under classmen displaced them from their roles on varsity However as the seven remaining seniors led a Bunch of inexperienced team against SuBurban league rivals the draw backs of the Building year Became apparent. The first of our discouraging defeats left us puzzled Arne Kaplan teacher and partial fan appropiately commented you have so much talent, why do you keep losing? late we realized that the jump from elementary soccer was far greater than expected and we were missing the scrappiness of past Brookline teams, it was lack of unity due in part to the International diversity of the players and the overall Inexperience of the team that prevented us from using our great talents Despite the disappointment of a 3-7-2 record we cannot forget certain high points of the season, we proved we could dice with the best in the two toughest games of the season, waltham Soccer (0-0) and N Quincy (0-0). in terms of Individual performance the renowned Irish-international defense comprised of Foley, Lockwood, Doherty. Offensive weakness hampered our defensive power Despite the spectacular aerial volleys of the Khang Brothers and the deadly precision shooting of strikers Amar KaliouBv and Ouzeah (the non-dimensional entity) the offense remained unproductive until the final game at home A fleeting moment of effective communication allowed the entity to strike twice with cobra like quickness, and the resulting goals and victory show a glimpse of the talent usually stifled By disorganization Rather than dwelling on the growing pains of 1983 we. the departing players and coach, look ahead with confidence, knowing that we have established a level of skill In Brookline soccer equal to that of any other state we hope to see the results, the products of our struggle, in a dynasty of superb teams able to, through unified skill and aggression, fulfill our dreams of a state championship 74 it’s rough out then I Yam what I Yam.” nternational and spike VOLLEYBALL 1983 Hitting the ground before the ball Base-adjust-cover” . pizza Who ' s doing lines?” . See you at the States next year C.S. i ! ii I 77 j V CROSS COUNTRY 1983 A second league championship seemed assured as the Brookline Road warriors donned their gear for 1983, while victory last year had oeen close, the team lost only three varsity runners and they seemed to have an endless supply of quality runners to replace them. Moreover three new seniors Durst upon the scene Aaron Becker Calone kapianski and Gonz Guetierrez Aaron whose natural ability appeared in his success in spring (and whose determination appeared in his readyness to Mowhawk himself) quickly earned himself a varsity spot. Galone an Israeli acquisition was a member of the Israeli national team, Gonz from Costa Rica brought his half-mile talent and determination (as well as a slight paunch) to the longer distances of Cross Country Meanwhile Captain Dave Counts filled with hope as well as bee pollen brown rice, assorted vitamins, and herbal potions) sported a dashing flat top-doo, prepared for his fourth cross country season Dave Caspar. Kenny, and James Carson helped provide leadership as seniors with a keen sense of decorum a nd propriety But this was not enough as Brookline was decisively defeated by a superiorly trained Cambridge squad. The Mowhawks dldn t help, the jackets didn ' t help, and the white stripes of hair paint applied to the heads of several team members only served to scandalize coach Norm laakso. Endowed with greater talent, but inadequately trained and a victim of self confidence, the Road Warriors lost all hope of a league championship. Although Brookline would not lose another duel meet, Cambridge would remain undefeated. Against Waltham, Newton, and even Brockton not more than one opposing runner would break into the top ten finishers, but always there was the loss to Cambridge But. fear not true believers! The spirit which gave the glow to the brilliant red jackets (batteries not included etc ) won t be dimmed Boasting an 11-1 record over the past two years, only four members of the league champion te am will not return next year The core of the 1982 squad a devastating crew of Juniors who demoralized and defeated opposing runners surging bv them in a single hoard, will lace their Nikes as experienced seniors Ben Chertok whose hat-size is exceeded only by his abllty will assume duties as captain along with Stef Counts, who carries the Counts name Into its third year as team captain. Peter Sheldon, an outstanding miler, established himself as one of the best cross country runners In the league despite his being a computer dweeb. Brad Spike Sklllman, whose nickname is well deserved for his ruthlessness, underwent a personal renaissance as a runner through a summer of rigorous road-racing (nice aliteration, eh?) The reserved and conslstant Jun Whang, who can always be counted upon for a terrific effort, will return next year promising to say more than three words (Jun is the strong silent type) Mike Urqulola certainly prov ed he was more than Just a pretty face as he, waiter Ng, Rand i d rather be swimming Day. and Dave Gordon round out the Junior crew Not to be forgotten (although very forgetable) are the sophomores who will figure greatly In Brookline ' s future That smooth, Dave Meyer (no relation in the least to Greg Meyers — the Boston Marathon winner) and Josh Becker (who may yet be stranger than his brother) broke Into the varsity ranks Mike Kelly and Bob Crawford also flirted with varsity stature, running much better than they harmonize while Josh Sideman and Matt (one-plate) Olens showed vast Improvement, watch out Cambridge, the Force Is with them! Field Hockey, i swinging season FIELD HOCKEY 1983 Brookline girls’ field hockey is back, and this year it ' s not just playing games. The team is dedicated and hard working, as proven by the fact that it was practicing two weeks before school started. Last year was a hard year for the team: a new coach, a new formation, many new players, and a new league. It was a year of tranistions and adjustments which created a lot of frustrations. This year, however, the team agrees things will be different. The varsity team consists of five seniors and eight juniors. Tri-captains Deanne Sanchez, Jennifer Dopazo, and Heidi Green are very hopeful for the new season. The team seems to be working well together, they say and there is a lot of team spirit. After an upsetting 3-2 loss to Revere in the season’s opener, the team pulled together in its next game the following Thursday to tie Malden, 1-1 a team it had lost to in previous years. After the first half, Brookline was leading 1-0. in the second half Malden came back with ten successive offensive penalty corners. Brookline ' s defense however, led by Kamakaze Cathy Becker did not allow them to capitalize. Malden scored only one goal, and left the score which was to be at i-i. Another large reason for holding off Malden’s offense was goalie Lara Anderson. Her aggressiveness left them in awe. The fact that the team didn’t give up shows what kind of girls they are, says Coach Carol Gregory. Anyone could have just let them score and start the ball at fifty again. It takes a lot, however, to keep putting out 110% time after time.” Playing varsity for the defensive team are Cathy Becker, Jennifer Dopazo, Laureen McGourty, Julie Slotnik, and Alyssa Bresnahan. Offensive players are Heidi Green, Deanne Sanchez, Carla Roddy, Amy Randall, inger L erra, Sara Gutensohn, Kirsten Hibert, and Lelia Deykin. The junior varsity team also looks promising, it beat Revere in the season ' s opener. Against Malden it fared the same as varsity, except that its tie was 0 - 0 . One thing that has been very hard for field hockey is that until mid-season this year we were not in a league. The Greater Boston League has given their approval for us to join and next year we are expecting to rise to the honor. VARSITY FOOTBALL This year Brookline football, under the direction of new head coach Bill Mckeown, won their opening game at Wellesley 21-9. The team then struggled against the Brockton Boxers and the Waltham Hawks, but lost. At home coming, Brookline walloped Everret and went on to win the next two games against Cambridge and Madison Park. The team then suffered two disappointing losses to North Quincy and Arlington. After 8 games the varsity was 4-4. The senior leadership and coaching staff, William Mckeown, Richard Freccero, Jack Heavy and Al Spara, have helped the team to be successful this year. Brookline can look forward to a strong program next year, based on the performance of the returning starters, the sub-varsity (4-3), and the freshman squad (6-1). The captains hope that the student body will support Brookline football in a bigger and better way in the years to come. 83 i ; I l ii November 18, 2083 Dear Girl Swimmers of 1983, Can you believe it ' s been 100 years since we ' ve swam at Brookline High School together! It seems as though just yesterday we had our first meeting with our new coaches Barbara Gould and Roy Coates. Remember how scared we were that practice would be so hard, and we all would be forced to lose 10 pounds? As a team Barbara set a goal of 250 pounds; l still can see the look on her face when she told us we had gained 14 pounds! Some kind of diet! Then came our new sweats and new suits. I guess no one told Ed Schluntz when he ordered the merchandise, that our team was built similar to a football team, because he ordered suits that gave us wedgies, and sweats that gave us no room to brea the Not all our apparel was too I smail; remember the Japanese” tee-shirts Karen Rao ordered too large? She knew how fat we really were! it ' s too bad we had to spend the rest of our lives explaining what they said in Japanese! Only Karen would think of such a unique idea. Pretty soon our season started, and swimming became a part of our daily routines. We worked hard to get in shape, and when the first meet approached we were tasting victory, week after week and meet after meet we d sweep the Suburban League victory after victory. That is until we met Newton North (By now they probably have gained 50 pounds, and the only exercise they get is pushing the gas pedal down in their Cadillacs). if I remember correctly, we came kinda close to beating them, it was Brockton that seemed as though it was a bad nightmare that just kep t repeating itself. You remember Suburbans at Cambridge Ringe and Latin! Just because we placed fourth, didn ' t mean we weren ' t first. After all we were the first ones in the Suburban League to steal a shower curtain from the Cambridge locker room and make a banner out of it. Well we showed the South Section just who would rule at sectionals, didn ' t we Micky, Tammy, Melissa, Leigh, Cindy, and Amy? Who said you need to warm up before competing? After all we took the scenic route to North Quincy and learned many things about how our coaches follow directions. It taught us never to take directions from a boy who can ' t even find his fly and zip it closed, and never to let Barbara put her car keys in her sweatshirt! The 1983 season was filled with many laughs and many close moments. I can ' t believe it happened so long ago. Girls’ Swimming: 84 PEACHES AND CREAM, PEACHES AND CREAM, LOOK AT THE GIRLS ON THE OTHER TEAM, THEY ARE ROUGH, AND THEY ARE TOUGH, AND BOY CAN THEY CROCHET! KNIT ONE, PEARL TWO, NEWTON YOU HOO!! Golf: Still Swinging GOLF PUTTS ALONG by James Radler The 1983 Brookline Golf team has a long way to go for it to achieve a winning record. It is a young team with the top six players sophomores and juniors. The team is led by a junior and two sophomores, Jim Radler, Scott Carter and Matt (Lefty) Lefkowitz. These three are all returning letterman from last year ' s squad. The other starters on the team are Peter Wilson, Dean Jooms, Dan and Tim Harrington. Coach Ron DiVincenzo has been patient with the players. His goal is to mold a winner for the rest of this year and to carry over to next years squad. The team is looking forward to playing Cambridge and Quincy where they hope to pick up their first win. The team is optimistic and gaining experience with every match and should play well the latter part of the year. It ' s new! It’s Girls . . . i Oross Country Equal Effort , Unfair Praise I am a very disappointed person. I am disappointed Monday through Friday, Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings. This disappointment began when l learned to read and became interested in womens ' sports, whether they be on the national or local level. Don ' t get me wrong. I ' m not a womens ' rights fanatic or anything like that. I just believe that if a person, male or female, puts a great deal of effort into becoming the best that they can be in a certain sport, then they should receive the acknowledgement and praise that they are due. The coverage of womens ' sports on the national level is a disgrace to all the people who have worked so hard in promoting it. Pick up the Boston Globe ' s sports page any day, Monday through Friday, and you will see the exteme differences that exist in the reporting of mens’ and womens ' sports. The front page of this section is always about men, unless someone like Rosie Ruiz tries to bury womens’ sports even furhter. There are always pictures from the NFL, NBA, NHL, or the American and National leagues in baseball. The readers end up knowing more about the Celtics ' traveling plans for the next two weeks than they know about womens ' intercollegiate play in a variety of sports in Division l, ii, or ill. i understand that there are no national professional womens ' teams in any sport. The Womens ' Basketball League was dissolved due to low attendence, lack of playing facilities, and lack of funding. The players ended up paying the referees out of their own pockets. The mens ' professional teams deserve recognition, but not at the expense of the womens ' teams. On the college level, everyone knows about Boston College and their amazing quarterback Doug Flutie. Everyone knows about Pat Ewing going from Cambridge Ringe and Latin High School to being a star at Georgetown university, and about Bobby Carpenter going as a first round draft pick to the NHL from a prep school in Massachusetts. Does anyone know about Medina Dixon? Medina Dixon was Pat Ewing ' s six foot two inch classmate on the Girls ' Varsity Basketball Team who went to Old Dominion, one of the best womens ' basketball teams in America, on a full athletic scholarship. She is currently a star on their team in Virginia. Does anyone know about Cheryl Miller? Cheryl Miller is now a starting forward on the U.S.C. Womens ' Basketball Team. She scored a record 106 points in a varsity basketball game and is one of the few women to ever dunk a basketball in a high school game. No one knows about them because they were never given the chance to find out. if there is no coverage of their activities, there is no way to learn about their achievements. Saturday afternoons are always full of televised mens ' sports. The NCAA basketball playoffs featured game after game of the top mens ' basketball teams going after the national title. We knew all there was to know about the eventual finalists, we ' d seen them play every other Saturday or Sunday making a televised climb to the top of their league. There was one womens ' basketball game televised last year, it was the championship for the Division I title. I didn’t even realize it was going to be on. There was nothing about it in the newspaper or on the radio. I was changing the channel on my television when l noticed what I thought was a group of men who needed hair cuts playing college basketball. They were really women; Women? On television? I nearly fell out of my chair. The next day, (Sunday), there was an article in the paper about Louisiana Tech winning the national title. It was buried in the middle of the sport section, right under an article about college wrestling. in local college sports, the mens’ basketball games are always covered on the eleven o ' clock news by three major networks. The women are not. The morning paper always gives the box scores of the mens ' games played the night before, it even tells us the half-time scores the game attendances and the teams ' records. The womens ' teams are lucky if just the score is put in. Who cares about their box scores, their attendences or their team records. I do, for one. I also care that the head coach of the Harvard University womens ' basketball team, Kathy Delany Smith, holds one of the longest winning streaks in high school history. She led the Westwood Girls ' Basketball team to a record two hundred and some odd consecutive wins while she was coach there. This goes practically unnoticed. However, it was in all the papers when the Natick Boys ' football team won their twenty third game in a row. It s only a difference of about one hundred and seventy five games, and in the world of mens’ and womens ' sport, these one hundred and seventy five games don’t mean a damn thing. i I l ! ii nV Row 1 Julie Rosenfield Row 2:Margie Ross, Katie Kelly, Maria Ramirez, Pauline Higgins, Natasha Breines Row 3:Sarah Gendron, Sharon Langdon, Korrin Baughman, Katie Doherty, Sonja Olson, coach Victoria Rowell FLAG SQUAD Front row: Carolyn Szeto (co-captain), Jenny Hsu, Cheryl Dubin, Susan Wong, Lannae Long, Lisa Rosen, Dena Tung, Julie Meiselman (co-captain) Second row: AiLien Liang, Charlotta Nuboer, Alicia Katz, Shelley Richmond, Michelle Ward, Brenda Burke, Caryn Lander, Jenni Golden, Emily Bikofsky, Robyn McCain Missing: Jennifer Meiselman, Susie Leipman PEP AND RIFLE SQUAD Front row: Stephanie Pratt, Pam Rocheford, Audrey Fitzpatrick, Roselady Rueda, Miranda Mersey, Patricia Narcisse Second row: Sandra Orfjuela, Jessica Bernew, Beth Chapman (captain), Kelani Larsen, Wendy Schwartz 89 ( n I j There ' s no business like show business. What is the Thanksgiving day football game? . It ' s something for everyone! For the teachers it’s a time to get out there and show some school spirit. For the alumnae it ' s a time to come back and swap hugs, kisses, and stories with people they haven’t seen since graduation (or the last football game). For students it ' s a time to cheer their school onto victory, by playing in the band, being on the cneerleading or pep squad, or by just screaming until their faces turn the school colors. And, for the parents, it’s a time to be proud of their young adults for being special enough people to want to work, cheer, or play for Brookline High School. M I Coaches If you ever took time out from a game or match to watch one of them, what would you see? An athletic looking person dressed In layers of assorted athletic-looking garb a mature adult jumping up and down, screaming, and waving his her arms madly or, a cool character crouched on the sideline surveying the situation with a calculated eye. They are a unique group, our coaches. They pour their energy, concentration, intelligence and tolerance into us, they ball us out but still Joke around with us, they teach us, they stand around in the rain alot making little marks in soggy, muddy notebooks with non-functional pens. They put up with alot especially on the bus (!!?!), but what it all boils down to is a group of people who share a great part of themselves, their ideas, their personalities, their knowledge with us in order that we might benefit and through our own quest for excellence become better people. What do they get? Satisfaction, we hope, but also the chance to share in our lives and our personalities at this stage, for no matter what is said about this stage , it certainly is a lot of fun!! l i 8 13 LOSS 0 St. Johns Prep 8 16 WIN 4 Madison Park 8 LOSS 0 Newton North 8 23 TIE 0 Waltham 8 27 WIN 7 Quincy 9 4 LOSS 1 Brockton 9 7 LOSS 0 Cambridge 9 11 LOSS 0 North Quincy 9 14 LOSS 0 Newton North 9 18 LOSS 0 Waitham 9 21 WIN 5 Quincy 9 26 LOSS 0 Madison Park 9 28 WIN 3 Brockton 10 1 LOSS 0 Cambridge 10 3 TIE 0 North Quincy 3 0 2 n BOYS ' VARSITY SOCCER Row 1: Martin Lodish, Glen 2 Gately, Chuck Hennekens, Tom 1 Foley (Capt.), Chris Yoder (Capt.), 2 Yer Khang, Juan Vines, Dean 7 Nelipovitz Row 2: Coach Nicholas Mohacsy, Lee Khang, John 5 Lockwood, Nick Rothstein, Ramin 0 Roayai, Oleg Vyodro, Yuir Bondar, 1 Sandy Galanis, David Kramer Row ■y 3: Amr Kaliouby, Eric Nichols, i Chris McCarthy, Fransisco Pombo, Uziyah Linder, Will Robb, 0 Jan Larsen, Mike Doherty 8 16 WiN 2 Lexington 1 8 21 LOSS 1 Newton North 2 8 23 WIN 1 Waltham 0 8 27 WIN 6 Quincy 1 8 30 TIE 1 Weymouth 1 9 4 WIN 2 Brockton 0 9 7 LOSS 0 Cambridge 1 9 11 WIN 1 North Quincy 0 9 14 LOSS 1 Newto n North 3 9 18 tie 1 Waltham 1 9 21 WIN 3 Quincy 0 9 26 LOSS 0 Lexington 2 9 28 TIE 0 Brockton 0 10 1 WIN 2 Cambridge 1 10 3 WIN 3 North Quincy 0 GIRLS ' VARSITY SOCCER Row 1: Danielle Campana (Capt.), Kathy Morse (Capt.) With the pool closed for the entire season, Brookline couldn ' t host a single meet, and the team was forced to practice every morning at Boston College. Despite this inconvenience the team retained its determination to win the Suburban League Championship. The swimmers ended their season undefeated, and placed fourth in the South Sectionals, two accomplishments never before achieved in the history of Brookline High. — Cyrus Rolbin ! ! BOYS’ BASKETBALL The team ' s record this year was not as good as it has been in the past, but in what could have been a Rodney Dangerfield year, we managed to gain respect with some positive accomplishments. There are many things we will always remember about this year such as: Teddy ' s yokes against Somerville. Roy ' s radar J ' s Larry ' s Breaking Edgar ' s fifty-foot shot Kevin’s formal attire for away games Todd ' s lightning quickness David ' s left against Newton Ty ' s amazing debut on varsity Chris ' s way with women Anthony’s deft handle John’s rough play in practice Kenny’s nasty swats Daryl ' s star performance at North Quincy Korey ' s size 15 dawgs All in all the year was meaningful. Coach Toney showed her warrior pride by abandoning the orange and black and supporting the red, white and blue. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES! — H.B. R.L. — NISSEN liey ' ll tumble for you. Gymnastics Beginning the season with only four veterans, the mere existence of a Boys’ Gymnastics team for the ' 83-’84 season was doubtful, in spite of this initial setback a team was formed and proceeded to perform beyond expectation. The new talent consisted of underclassmen Lu, Juan, Yur, Jason, and Eduardo. Lu Yoder, brother of veteran Chris Yoder, highlighted his season on the parallel bars with his achievement of an awesome press handstand. Juan, a strong competitor, did well on the p-bars and is looking forward to extending his participation into other events. Yur Khang led the team in the floor exercise and has great potential to develop into an impressive overall gymnast. Jason Wong, voice of the team, follows in the footsteps of his brother (class of 1981), a former team captain, as an extremely talented competitor. Ed, the captain-elect, enjoyed a good season on the high-bar and received a medal for his vaulting performance at the South League meet. The veterans of the team, led by captain Matti Williams, all performed well, enabling the team to consistently score respectably. Highlights were Daniel Lee’s silver medal (2nd place) in the rings at the South League meet, and his qualifying for the State meet, Joe Weirs medal winning performance on the vault, and Chris Yoder’s pommel horse routine. Faced with the loss of a team member early in the season, league re-organization, and stiff competition, the team overwhelmed Newton South (Supra) in its most impressive victory of the season. Speciai thanks go to coach Steve Gosdanian for his tremendous and successful efforts in bringing together a creditable team. Next year holds great potential for a winning team who through their hard work this year have prepared themselves for the future. 107 ( j ! Girls ' Gymnastics We started off with a small team. Then, two of our all-around competitors were injured, and out for the season, leaving us with an even smaller team consisting of only seven members. With the help of our fine coaches, Lisa Ferraro, and Norman Devlo, our talented team, having a distinct disadvantage, concluded with a successful season, we might have obtained the suburban league title if only; Laura and Kelly could have handled Medford ' s mats. Jenny and Laurie were fat enough to bounce off our board. Margie loved her routine as much as everyone elses on the team. The Judge at Bridgewater could have timed Jane ' s routine we had our own board. Mr. Devlo ' s legs were stronger. Our bus driver could have been sane. we showed up at meets on time. As we had no senior members next year we look forward to an even stronger team. So, look out, Brockton! 108 Jnparalleled! i Ode to Adidas To set down the season in a form that is terse, I ' ve opted to use the medium of verse: The first winning season the team did complete, For the first time Brockton and Weymouth we beat. Mike Keg-Legs ' ' Doherty is a captain we all follow, That names well deserved, for one leg must be hollow. Captain Dave was in fashion of tights shining and red, But he had to concede the Best Legs title to Ted. Over the hurdles flew Nichols and Gillis with ease, You would never guess they had bruises on their knees. The crowd chanted Pee-wee! as Jon mounted the track, He won every 600 by surging out of the pack. Calone and Conz provided an international spice, Though these warm weather boys did not like our ice. Juniors Whang, Chertok, Skillman, and Counts showed greatness; While young Kenny Steinman took flack for his lateness. Sprinters Ng and Gillis were always on the Lam, And the relays were off with one shout of ram! With flailing arms Pete Sheldon crossed the line, Then we ' d all go to Presto to dine. After a successful six years Coach Burns left with good reasons, While James Carson and Aaron Becker completed their last seasons. But, coaches Burke, Glennon, and Parsons are going to stay; Hoping a championship might come their way. Boys break school Dave shouts encouragement to the J.V. runners! 110 ' ecords. x i State Team Dave Counts, Ted Wheaton, Mike Doherty, Peter Sheldon, Ben Chertok, Jon Mehlman, Mike Davidson, Ken Steinman, Gonz Cutterrez, Galon Kaplaski, Kevin Ng, Eric Nichols, Bob Gillis, Bill Gillis. Nothing Is ever to high for this guy. I i I I state Team Sandy Bergland, Tehani Collazo, Nicole Hullum, Lisa Goldstein, Riitta Sharf. Facing High Tehani, burning up the track. 112 I GIRLS ' WINTER TRACK The Girls ' Winter Track team did not have the best season, but it was a fun one. The first two meets went very well. The team ran hard and showed lots of enthusiasm. But as the weeks went by, illness and depression set in causing many losses of good runners. Two thirds of the team showed up, but those who were left were still optimistic. By the end of the season the hours had turned to minutes, and the minutes to seconds, i and everyone was almost in top shape. The relay teams did very well at the dual meets. The 4x400 took Second and Fourth place at the Coaches Relays and the States. Track is one of the most rewarding sports on the list. Although the team may not have done terribly well, the individuals did. There is nothing like winning a race, it is a feeling that everyone should experience i! at least once in a lifetime. B i d ' o cn Q d D Wrestling The 1983-84 wrestling season has been a turning point for Brookline. After two years with records of 1-11, 3-9 we ended this year with a 6-8 record. We had several convincing wins, 51-6 over Medford, 47-18 over Minutemen Regional and a 44-18 thumping of Cambridge. The team accomplished this with a very young group (only two seniors) which holds well for next year, and the year after, we had a lot of kids with spirit and desire, and they all worked as hard as they could. During the year several kids distlngushed themselves, Tseung Lee had on almost perfect record, mared by only one loss and a tie. Junior Bob Hayes a seasoned veteran had another outstanding season. Nervale Ramsey had a 11-3 regular season record and the rest of the team as a whole, did beyond their expected ability. Unfortunately none of our wrestlers placed in the top four at the sectionals. The captains, Mark Ford and Michael Drain, wish to express their gratitude to Mr. Puleo. Without Mr. Puleo the wrestling team would still be getting thumped by most of the teams they play. Personally, I wish to thank Mr. Puleo for all he has done and l know that some day soon Mr. Puleo will lead Brookline wrestling to a Suburban League championship. We also wish to thank Mr. Roark for all this help. And finally Mark and Michael wish the future wrestling teams of Brookline, the best of luck! Hockey Cheerleaders H-E-L-L-O! H-E-L-L-O! I Hockey ; v 4F yCl ' ft . mJi «i L jJf Competitive Season HOCKEY ' 83- ' 84 Although this season ' s record was not up to par from previous seasons, the BHS Varsity Hockey team played competitively all year. With only four full time players returning from last year ' s team, the underclassmen had to play a significant part in the outcome of the season. The early part of the season showed signs of inconsistency and lack of experience, but by the end of the season the team was going toe to toe with the best in the league. injuries plagued the team throughout the year as John Kelleher and Peter Meade missed several games. Key defenseman Bobby Allen was lost for the season with a broken ankle, but Eric Doran ' s leadership on the blue line helped bring the first year defensemen along nicely. Up front Co-Captains David O ' Brien and Scott Carey, along with hardworking linemate A.J. Slavin produced a great deal of offense, always posing a threat to their opponents. Other key players up front included senior Ken Shea and sophomores Brian Slavin, Dennis Radley, and Richie Sheridan, in net, sophomore Joey Marco played the majority of the time with juniors Tim Hennessey and Tim Smith ready to step in anytime. i TIME — 12:00 P.M. PLACE — Cafeteria in Brookline High School Hey kid! Yeah you. Get out of that chair! WHY? You dare ask why?! Because you are a low life freshman, and l am a mighty junior! Needless to say the freshman scurries off in search of a new seat, while the junior is now boasting about his conguest to his friends. The dominance over freshman and sophomores is one of the more pleasant aspects of being a junior. You can recall memories of how you were treated like dirt in your first two years, now it ' s your turn to dish it out. No longer do you have to look up to everyone in the halls; now you tower over half of the school population. There are still the seniors to contend with, but once you get to know them, they aren ' t that bad. Associating with seniors, you can ' t help but hear talk about college. As a junior, this is the first time you start thinking seriously about where you want to spend the next four years of your life after high school; in college, working, or just having fun. A junior ' s mind is filled with different hopes and dreads. This is the time where plans for the future start to form. There is one major obstacle in the way; the dreaded SAT ' s. On a Saturday in May during every year, juniors drag themselves from their warm beds at 8:00 in the morning to take these aptitude tests. After a six week wait, the results come to the junior ' s home, where a variety of reactions are seen. For some, hopes of Harvard and Stanford are rekindled. For other, the results spell d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r. For the majority however, the results are sat-isfactory. Otherwise the junior year is pretty much the same as a the previous two years have been. Hey kid? Yeah, you! Get out of that chair! Why? You dare ask why?! Because you are a lowlife junior and I am a mighty senior! 120 Akers 142 Row 1: Vicky Primpas, Julie Kamenetsky, Chris Erikson, Tito Lepore, Mike Urquiola, Julie Slotnik. Row 2 . McCarthy BHS Productions Presents — The re-release of that timeless classic THE DRAMA SOCIETY The compelling story of a group of kids, drawn together by desire, with only one purpose in mind; to present plays. The Drama Society , together, through grueling auditions and endless rehearsals, they learn that there are no small parts, just small directors. STARRINC Patrick McSherry — as the seemingly omnipotent President Julia Soyer — as the sensual and seductive Vice President Andrea Chipman — as the capitalistic and dominant Assistant Treasurer David Kleiler — as the secretary who couldn ' t type and introducing Mari Pauldick — who makes her debut as the Executive Representative as well as acting several other roles With a supporting cast of thousands! THE DRAMA SOCIETY Directed, Produced, and Written off by lain Ryrie All rights (and seats) reserved TOWN MEETING 1983-84 Town Meeting is the fully representational legislative governance body of Brookline High School. It has jurisdiction over all policies, rules, and regulations found in the student handbook. Each year dedicated students, faculty members and staff work to improve the school and represent the opinions of their varied constituencies. When school opened in the fall of ' 83 Town Meeting squared off against the conservative factions of the administration who in the July Revolution had deigned to pull in the reins of Open Campus with the 3 acts whereby freshmen have no Open Campus, Sophomores are restricted to the campus, and Juniors and Seniors are left with the sign out system . What followed was intense debate culminating in a censorial vote of no confidence in the administration. Dr. McCarthy took a lot of flak considering he was only trying to improve the educational atmosphere of the school. The remainder of the fall and winter dissolved into numerous debates and proposals and constant re-hashlng of the Open Campus issue. Later, the body delved into a discussion of its own Jurisdicti on in an attempt to create a constitution. It was not always fun. There were days when the topics were introspective, the sophomores verbose, and the seniors asleep, but there was always the underlying faith that we were all there because we cared about Brookline High School and wanted to do as much for this magnificent institution as It had done (and is doing) for us. And we even managed to delay mid-year exams for a day!! TOWN MEETING MEMBERS 1983-84 — Akers House: Susan Long. Adam Posen, Peter Badalament, Jan Larsen. I’ll send you one if you send me one! is it O.K. to send one to an underclassman, (cradle robber) l wonder if he ' ll send me one? She loves me. She loves me not. She loves me know l have one in here somewhere! Freshmen you can find them A) Standing in the junk food line 6 ' Traveling in herds C) Still looking for the fourth floor D) in study hall E) Combing their hair before and after class E) Attending the ping pong dance I’ll never forget my sophomore year in high school! It was now my turn to rank on freshmen, but most important I knew what I was doing and where I was going The worst feeling was being lost my first day. I was to embarrassed to ask anyone how to get to the fourth floor, so I just tried outa couple of prom- ising stairwells. Anyhow, on my first attempt, l be- gan my ascent to the fourth floor. On my way up, I passed a couple of kids who resembled adults. I thought to myself They must be seniors!” I real- ized that l had made a big mistake when I found myself on the roof. Only then did l figure out that I took the wrong stairs. How was l going to pass these kids on my way down without having fresh- men written all over my face? I solved this by wait- ing for them to leave. I missed my C block class, but it was worth avoiding the embarrassment. Great, it was D block and time for first lunch. That was a nightmare in itself! Never have l seen so many kids in one place. Well, l managed to find my way overto the pretzels where I dripped mustard all over my new white corduroys. I figured everyone would think my pants were new wave. I glanced down at my schedule. Great”, l thought, ”l have ten min- utes to find my D block class.” Gee, that’s funny, everyone is already sitting down. Oh, l guess the class before mine isn’t over yet.” Fifteen minutes passed and the class was still in session. ’’Alright, be a man and go investigate the situation.” I intro- duced myself to the teacher. She was understand- ing and kind (so l thought). She told me that l took the wrong lunch. I was relieved that l wasn’t in trouble. My teacher, being thoughtful, alerted the class to my mistake and tried to explain the lunch schedule. That was the end of me! Everyone laughed, it took me a few months to live that one down! So guess what I’m doing now waiting for those pitiful froshies to climb the stairs in search of the elusive fourth floor. Oh, don’tget me wrong rm not mean. I admit that l occasionally tell fresh- men to take the green line to Park Street in order to get to the M.T. building, but I’m usually quite help- ful 182 I V 4 I fiAiv . 183 Akers 261 Row 1: Nina Rabinowitz, Tracy Arnold, Sarah Marxer, Lillian Moy, Laurie Saffi.
