Cross Country ' s success cannot be attributed to a single factor, rather, it was the culmination of efforts over the past few years; the inspiration of previous members, particularly last year ' s captains, Dave Stokle and Jon Sheldon, the dedi- cation and resolve of the team as they practiced long before the season began, and the coaching of Mr. Laakso all figured greatly in the capture of their first Suburban League title. A 6-0 record does not accurately depict the course of Cross Country ' s campaign. With the toughest schedule in the League, Brookline would face perennial champions Brockton and Cambridge in the first two meets. These meets were indeed the entire season. Although taking first place, Brock- ton was stunned by the on-slaught of Brookline runners. Against Cambridge, victory was secured only in the last 600 yards of the 2.5 mile course where Brookline ' s Dave Gordon, Warren Stotsky, and Shun Yee surged by Cambridge ' s fourth man. Once these meets had been won, other teams fell easily. The loss of Suburban League All Star Bill Stewart, co- captain, Warren Stotsky, and Shun Yee will be heartfelt, but as demonstrated in the toughest meets, Brookline ' s strength lies in its consolidated corps. The return of All Stars Ben Chertok and co-captain Dave Counts, along with the wave of sophomore runners which crashed upon the aspirations of Brockton and Cambridge, will insure success for years to come. It is evident that a cross-country dynasty has been established and wave sophomores, Ben Chertol$, Dave Gordon, Jun Whang, Stefan Counts, John Flatly, and Rand Day have vowed to perpetuate it. 133 FIELD HOCKEY VARSITY : rst Row Tasha Brienes. Tony Lees, Jeremy Slover, John DuMovlin, Oleg Vyadro, Coach Ken Carter SOCCER 1982 Soccer ' 82 was a year of transition. It included a new coach who forced us to learn Hungarian, however, we were unable to fully understand his Hungarian logic until the last four games of the season. Although the team was made up of mostly seniors, the experience level was relatively low, returning were four starters from the previous year. This inexperience was reflected in the teams inconsistent start. As the season progressed the team became more unified, this was apparent both on and oft the field. In the last four games we showed our true potential allowing only one goal while scoring seven and pummeling the state finalists Cambridge R .L 3-0. Off the field, we initially had problems establishing our well-known domain in the corner of the cafeteria known as the Soccer Table . By mid-season the customary banner was once again raised to announce that Soccer ' 82 was here to stay. This helped to relieve the daily task of booting freshmen from that area. Brookline soccer has established many traditions in the past and these were carried out with much enthu- siasm this season. During our traditional varsity initiation ceremonies, we heard some superb vocal perform- ances. One of the most memorable was that of junior Ramin Royai ' s solo of Ebony and Ivory where he suf- fered many welts by order of the judging committee, who consisted of Tri-Captains Chris, Victor, and James. Other superb performances were given by R8cB spe- cialist Thurman Mattiesen, Irish wonder John Lock- wood, and Gary Woolf who improvised what seemed to be a derivative of the Talking Heads. Another well-known tradition were the young men from Manchester, England known as The Original Mir- rors , little needs to be said about this group other than they are unheard of. It was mandatory that the words of our theme song Boys Cry were known by each varsity member, Fugly Jr. D ' Angelo and โ€œJeff Lowenbrau could be called for tootering if necessary. Every player contributed to the team in their own way. That Turkish Wonder Sonny Akdag utiliized his philosophy of soccer-dribble! to help our offense. Help- ing him were Bart Carothers who specialized in comer kicks, Jan Larsen and Ramin Roayai. Leading offense was Captain Vinny Livingstone, the team ' s leading scorer and master of the flip throw-in. Brookline ' s killer squad which was so effective consisted of: senior Mon- ty Wilson โ€” The Blonde Wonder , senior Gary Woolf- man, junior Chris Macca McMarthy, Sambo Thun- der thighs , Mr. โ€T David Sapers and Don Klein. Cap- tains Chris flash Cardona and James shifty Fried- man controlled midfield along with junior captain- elect Chris Yoda. Brookline ' s D was lead by seniors Pete D ' Angelo and Jeff Lowenstein along with support from Seth Shulman and Eric Nichols. John Lockwood came in frequently to utilize his knowledge of rugby to change the pace of the game. Brookline ' s goal was ably tended by talented captain-elect Tom Foley The Goalie , and Thurman Mattiesen who did a great job in the last two games of the season. During the course of the season Soccer ' 82 became a close-net team. The wide array of athletes learned to both play and party together. In two words this team can be described as The sllab! ROBIN scored a bucket at Brockton. GAIL tried to sneak under the net and join the opposing team. WE cut and permed our hair. WE even expanded our vocabulary with words to kill. After being the undefeated champs of the Milton Summer League, we were able to carry our hard work and determination into the season. For the first time, the girls ' team had a winning season and a qualifying record for the State Tournament. Sure we had our problems like: Ruthie ' s big feet tripping everyone, Hanya running down the court without the team, Walshi e not yelling ball loud enough, Chris ' ears causing three second violations in the key, Nique not getting dressed in time for practice, Kerry being too short for a forward, Sara being afraid she ' d hurt someone, Lana not being able to stand on her own feet. Senior co-captaln Fred Hill, led the way with a 25-point per game average Co-captaln and storting center John Moose-Pinone Tzimorangas added 14 points per game, tough rebounding, and good defense to the starting line-up Among the other starters were senior forward Thurman Matthiesen. senior guard-forward Joe Truck Lemar, and senior guard Scott Huggins. Thurman was our best rebounder and one of our better defensive players. He controlled the boards in big games and scored some crucial buckets Joe was our second outside threat with a radar jump shot. Scott ran the offense, and with his ball handling ability and experience, dribbled us out of some tight situations. The starting five was the nucleus of the team, however there were eight other very good players on the squad. They worked the starters hard in practice and did their jobs when called upon to give a starter a breather. The rest of the team consisted of seniors Tony Corbin, Norman Anderson, Panayotis Skordos, Alan Johnson, David Daniels, Jack Cazeau, Bruce Brown, and sophomore center Korey Mickey. As we head for the states, we would like to thank the great coaching staff. Without the aid and guidance of coaches John Howard, Lance Tucker, and head coach Bernard Johnson (our choice for coach of the year), we doubt that we would have made it this far. The battle was on between Brookline and Newton North for sole possession of first place in the Suburban League. Unfortunately, Newton edged us in overall points by two and were the league champions despite a loss and a tie to Brookline. We ended up in second place with a 6-2-4 record which was far better than anyone expected. On behalf of all the seniors we would like to thank Coach DiVincenzo and the rest of the coaching staff for a great year. CD GO TAKE THE PLUNGE! BROOKLINE SWIMMING 1982-83 Two years ago the Brookline Swimming and Diving Team swam and dove its way to the Suburban League Championship. Now, two years later the swimmers and divers of Brookline are still champions. The team was made up of a bunch of determined and spirited guys. Although we came in second in the league, it was a strong and major improvement over last year. In the South Sectional Championship Meet we took fifth beating twenty other teams including Brockton and Catholic Memorial who we lost to earlier in the year. Although we did not win the championship as teams in the past have, we improved as the season went along and came close to entering the state meet. First year coach Lisa Ferraro joined us in the middle of the season and turned a team with little experience or confidence into a team which did well and was respected throughout the league. Coach Norman Devio, as he always has, gave us support throughout the season and his sense of humor helped us more than we can say. Hopefully, next year ' s team will recapture the Suburban League title. I BOYS ' GYMNASTICS BOYS ' GYMNASTICS 1982-83 This year, the Boys ' Gymnastic Team had it ' s prime moments. During the first few weeks of the season, it looked as if Brookline would be a powerhouse, capable of winning the Suburban League. However, a few gymnasts dissolved from the team, leaving but a few team members. These remaining gymnasts worked diligently to grasp three awesome victories over Brocton, Newton South, and Framingham North. The overall team record has little to do with the many individual achievements earned. For example, the majority of the team were first year participants: Joe Weir, Chris Yoder, Jim Ross, Willy Yee, Josh Clayton-felt, and Chee Lau. Each scored respectably in many different events. We are proud of their accomplishments. They learned the hard way that gymnastics is by far, one of the most demanding sports. The two team veterans, Victor Livingstone (Captain), and Matti Williams (Captain-elect), had excellent seasons. Matti has proved this year that he is well prepared to replace Victor as an all-around competitor next year. Victor had the best season of his high school career, scoring personal records in all six events, including: a 7.9 in the floor exercise, an 8.3 in vaulting, and a 5.7 in the parallel bars. Victor also scored a 34.5 in the all-around, which qualified him for the States โ€” an achievement which hasn ' t been reached during the past four years. Steve Gusdanian (a former B.H.S. gymnast) was an inspirational coach who did a great job pulling the rookies and veterans together. Brookline High School ' s unique Town Meeting body has started slowly, but is now picking up a good head of steam. Through February own Meeting has implemented a Rotating Chair, said that report cards may not be given out the day before a vacation, and has removed the eaamaster ' s vote for the Town Meeting. Rotating Chairs have included Julia Galloway, newly appointed Town Manager Cathy Colglazier, Don mas. and Joan Krause. One must also mention several people who have been outstanding through their unflagging dedication. Myhal and naThan Springer, as well as Bob Kenny, have been leading students while Cathy Colglazier has been a very active teacher. Although often frustrating and slow Town Meeting is moving forward slowly but surely. It is important to strive for true representation, and Town Meeting is working to accomplish that end. We hoped to avoid the John Doe on (every page syndrome |by including as many people as possible. Moreover, .we hoped to make this yearbook an accurate reflection of B.H.S. in ' 83. | Best of Luck to the Class of ' 83. P.S.
