Six players were nominated for the All-Suburban League Team and they were Lisa Krakow, Debbie Kindred, Jane Lojek, Linda Gauger, Michelle Figueira, and Tracey Green. Both Lisa and Debbie were selected. The team is losing only two players from this year ' s team and should be a strong contender for the title next year. 18 BOY’S VARSITY SOCCER TEAM 1st Row L to R: Cliff Long, Xeng Khang, David Friedman (Co-Captain), Chris Cotton (Co-Captain), Alan Fried, Josh Duhl. 2nd Row L to R: Yves Cazeau, Stanley Piltch, Jeff Shaffer, Joe Gurian, Jimmy Kohn, Chu Yang, Bob McNeil. 3rd Row L to R: Roger Miller, Lewis Schneider, David Krakow, Dean Galatis, David Kauff, Joel Priestly, Peter Curtin. 4th Row L to R: Bruce Milton, Kenny Chu, Oneil McDonna, Marshall Bruce, Tom Burhoe, Jorg Bassiacos, Mr. Conroy (Coach). The season’s record was 9-0 and gives Coach Belocas a 73-6 record during his eight years as head of the golf team. This outstanding record also includes six Suburban League titles. Cross Country 25 Volleyball State Champions ■v I k i Fi Our dream was to make the States. We started off with a bang by beating Brockton for the first time in five years. Going into the tournament we were seated 12th out of twelve entries, but after the preliminary rounds we proving that we were a team that could win it all. In the semi-finals we beat Newton South, Taunton, and Fall Rivers, which qualified us for the finals against Milford. In the first game we were behind 8-0 when Valerie Jellison went to the line to serve 15 straight points to win the game. Milford proved to be a tough opponent in the second game, but with Karolyn, Sally, Michell, and Galina hitting, and with Val and Sue setting, we won the game and the State title. Eight girls participated in the sectionals and four girls made tne Suburban Le ague all star team. The success of this year’s team was due to the hard work outs of swimming 5000 yards a day, exercising, and weight training. Most of all, it is the reflection of team spirit and togetherness instilled by coaches Jim Locke and Jo Anne Damigella. Their encouragement created an atmosphere of total team committment. We had a year with “the whole team on our side.” Co-Captains: Sandy Shankle Janice Pineo feu. ■ ' , t - J First Row L to R: Pam Hunt, Kate Bowditch, Kim Mullaney. Coach Schluntz commented at the fall awards assembly, we never gave up. We always gave 100%.” However, one hundred percent was not always enough in the powerful Suburban League. The season’s record of two and eight was a definite let down from a midseason hope of five and five. Brookline was hurt early in the season by the loss of two tri-captains and one of the starters due to injury. Therefore, Brookline was just not capable of capitalizing on other teams’ mistakes. A disappointing loss to Newton North on Thanksgiving, twenty to zero, proved a fitting end to a frustrating season. Special congratulations are given to All Suburban members, Jed Klein, Costa Evangelakos and Kenny Anderson. Man, do I ache! The Swim Team has never had so many solid swimmers. In the past, a few superstars were the backbone of the team. This year, Brookline always had three steady swimmers in each event. Our 5-3 record doesn’t truly show the team’s accomplishments. Consider that we are only a team for three, cold winter months, and we compete against teams that train year round. The secret of our success lies in the “slightly unconventional” training methods of our inventive coach, Chris Hafferty. His contemporary philosophies involve yoga, stretching, and psychological training — like, “have a positive mental attitude,” and “feel high in the water.” Coach Hafferty’s beliefs in the sensitivity levels of hard swimming — pain, torture and agony, have created new training methods such as hypoxic, breath kicking, and lungbusters. His energy and enthusiasm for swimming have kept the team sane though not so evident during a cold water bucket fight. The Coach implements mental images so that the swimmers focus maximum energy into their races. This practice had great results in our victory over Don Bosco, as every swimmer cut down his time — some up to nine seconds. The divers performed well throughout the season and diver John Findley broke the school record with 193 points. The power of the team’s spirit this year was shown by the awesome improvements of every swimmer and by the binding team unity. By the way, no one drowned. Given the limited manpower to work with, we overstepped our bounds of expectations. Much support and leadership was contributed by Marc Cheung, Robert Yee, Danny Wong, and most valuable player, Eddie Gresser. Gari Wong, Paul Wilkosky, and Barry Goldberg also contributed much to the team. Also, a special thanks to Coach Harrington and Coach Geist. Along with his fine coaching abilities, he has enabled us to think of track as more than a competitive sport. He helped rs understand track by showing us how to enjoy it and learn about ourselves without it being simply an ego trip. Our season record was 7-1 with a close defeat by Newton. The season went fast, with many of our team mates feeling like sisters. We would like to thank everybody for this season, and we look forward to next year. With a membership of 150 students, it is the largest, active club within the school, and it offers several day and week-end trips to New England ski areas, and most spectacularly, a week-long trip to Sugarloaf during February vacation. The club allows all skiiers, whether beginners or experts, the opportunity to ski among friends inexpensively. It also allows students to know one another outside of the school, in a totally different environment, and out of the club come some of the closest friendships. The ski club is advised by Mr. Wally Ulich, and the 1978-1979 presidents are; Clare Fox, Peter Siegel, and Lewis Schneider. Photography Club The photography club is a group of energetic, dedicated students who are both beginning and experienced photographers. Members meet for lively weekly darkroom sessions and frequently have their photos published in the Murivian, Sagamore, and other publications. Some members have produced prize-winning photographs. David Rosenbaum is president this year. 75 Horseback Riding Club Ping Pong Club The Ping Pong Club enters its third year of competition with many more aspiring players. What you make it. Hustling down the halls. Life in the Rat race. A place to read walls. SAGAMORE Lousy food. Calling in to say you’ll be late when you don’t feel like going to class. Smoking in the Boys’ Room. Having to work but not wanting to. Boring! A school with a lot of hidden talent. Sleezing through four years of high school and still getting into a fine college. I hate it! Lovers and other strangers. Ummm . . . good question. BHS is BS! 206 BHS is Sophisticated. A lot of opportunities for all students. Open Campus, SWS, crappy food, Awols, exams, Thanksgiving day games, and friends. Education — the real meaning of the word. Basic, Standard, Honor. Broken hearts. A bit too lenient. Great place, best high school I’ve been to . . . only high school I’ve been to. A word in itself. Flunking a math test, and walking through the halls pushing Freshmen. Sleepless nights and fetal pigs. Learning nothing in English, and then your English teacher can’t figure out why you did so bad on your S.A.T. Food fights and false alarms. Duck-Duck Goose in homeroom. No school spirit, but still going to the games. Track meets and nervous breakdowns.
