Surrounded by a world almost irreparably stripped of any pretense of virtue, teen-agers must still struggle to gain some sense of self and of their future — and the good news is that it can be done.” Alix Nelson The forecasts for 1977 seem appallingly and unrelentingly grim, passive, bland and neutral. Reality is painted starkly and morbidly. And yet, I know that collectively and individually YOU have substantial character and endless grit. There exists enough sheer good will and determination to turn us around. Values and truth remain. Hope is scarcely lost! Like Candide, I retain and even insist on OPTIMISM. We began the season slowly because of some new additions and some early injuries, but soon started running over our opponents. Then, a little past mid-season, a slump rendered us scoreless for four games which knocked us out of the State Tournament. The team ended the season showing great unity and spirit. We came back, beating Brockton in a very exciting last game. Barry Entner Bob Upson Henrique Mosquera Boy’s Soccer J.V. Soccer: ROW 1: Dean Galatis, Mike Sapers (Co-Captains). The swimmers racked up ten wins, and only one loss for the season. The backbone of the team was the seniors. Cindy Clifford holds six out of the eleven BHS girls’ swimming records. Gail Caulfield, Louisa Koch, Laura Frank and Linda Lovering contributed greatly. Spirit and cooperation helped to make this year’s team one of the most outstanding BHS has ever had. 144 J (Top to bottom) Sandy Burke, Louisa Koch, Cindy Clifford, Liz Von Huene, Gail Caulfield, L aura Frank, Mary Donovan, Theresa Melville, Susie Griffin, Donna Hunt, Laura Gamer, Linda Lovering, Elana Friedman, Katie Bowditch, Bridgette Flannigan, Janis Pineo, Sandy Shankle, Jim Locke, (Coach), Audrey Frank, Margo Childs, Tina Fairbank, Maura , Karen Hillary Peterson, Debbie Kaplan, Carol Pastan, Erin Donovan, Alice Finn, Jennifer Lockwood, Joan Stanton. It took us the first half of the season, but we were finally successful with a 7-7-record. Although we didn’t make it to the States, the Quincy game proved that we could do it with desire and skill. Four of our starting five will return next year, along with the other four underclassmen. We feel that next year ' s squad will bring back valuable experience, and if applied, will lead to a winning season. We were happy about the great hustle of sophomore Kim Richards, th e aggressive rebounds of freshman Heidi Kelly, and the penetrating ability of Senior Laurie Mann. There was also the always consistant play of high scoring sophomore center, Karolyn Kirby. If the players continue to improve, this year’s losing season will be the base for better seasons in the future. This year was not a disappointment for us. Through hard work, good spirit, and team dedication, we were able to make an almost complete turnaround from last year. Charlie Ferro and Marshall Findley played consistently well throughout the season. Major contributions were also made by seniors John Siegal, John Domurad, Bob Lipson, and Derrell Cole. ROW 2: Coach Pantos, Andy Holtz, Steve Burnley, Tony Rao, Herbert Lee, Mark Levine, Scott Ratner (captain) Coach Jack Jew. The boys’ Gymnastics Team had many outstanding participants this year. Sophomore Richard Foster won a s ilver medal in vaulting in the Suburban League Meet. He had a very good season, and will have more in years to come. Other outstanding participants were Juniors Andy Holtz, Tony Rao, Herbert Lee, Sophomores Doug Cheung, Steve Burnley, Mark Levine, Mark Cheung, Mauricio Rubio, and Freshman Eddie Gresser and Jeff Sudalter. Next year looks very promising for this young team. Scott Ratner 159 This year the hockey team had to compete with not only a well balanced suburban league, but also an unfortunate number of injuries to promising players. Coach Divincenzo did an outstanding job in combining the few remaining lettermen with the inexperienced sophomores. However, the record of the team was not a true indication of the talent and enthusiasm contained within the team. Many of the games were lost by only one goal, or were tied up by the other team with only minutes to go. HOCKEY CHEERLEADERS “Times have changed,” wrote Cole Porter, but the success that the boys’ swim team has enjoyed over recent years definitely has not. Finishing with a 6-3 record was unexpected as five top-notch seniors graduated last year. A solid team developed around seniors Glenn Shaffer, Bennett Goldberg, Dan Tampkin, Bill Silva and Bill Miller. Enthusiasm and team unity won many close meets. The 77-78 season may even be more successful. 164 % SWIMMING ROW 1: Coach Chris Hafferty, Richard Tobin, Laura Frank, Larry Sperber, Steve Berardi, John Peyev, Bennett Goldberg, Roger Miller, Beno Schmidt, Edwin Be- net, Jim Novakoff, Mike Sapers, Mike Gold, Bill Miller. ROW 2: Matt Ellis, Brett Severs, Kurt Einstein, Glenn Shaffer, Dan Tampkin, Bill Silva, Marc Berenson, Ted Shure, Eyal Grunebaum, Simon Long, Larry Crapo. “I’ll see you Sunday morning at eight, guys! What? You can’t make it because you’ll be skiing? I’ll forget that you ever mentioned that word!’’ These are the sympathetic words of Coach Chris Hafferty. A look around the pool, and you might notice a human body hanging from the high diving board by the hands. That’s Steve Berardi stretching out. Or you might notice Glenn Shaffer demonstrating the technique of false starting. Maybe you’ll see yoga exercises that the team has started to do — you can’t miss them. And when you leave the pool, you’ll have realized the dedication and discipline that went into an excellent 6-3 record. 165 WINTER TRACK This winter, Brookline High had, for the first time, a girls’ track team. The team composed of about thirty girls worked very hard to achieve a record of five wins and four losses. Though this was our first year on a winter track team, the cooperation of the faculty and the Physical Education Department made the season both enjoyable and promising for the future. With excellent performances by Molly Gabel, Narine Tashjian, Jeannine Wheaton, Kim Barnette, and Jo-Ann Thornton, all of whom placed in the Suburban League meet, the team proved to be tough competition for other teams. Though the new track team got off to a shaky start, the talent was soon uncovered. Without the dedication, skill, and humor of our coach, Mr. Parsons, our team never would have had such a fun and successful season. Mary Walsh Jana Handwerk Sandy Burke ROW 1: Bella Wong, Sharon McKinnon, Kim Barnette, Cindy Yung, Amy Wolff, Lori Halpern. But more important is the moral aspect; Track is a team sport. When a runner is out there competing — He is not alone. For on the other side of the track, There is an important group of people, His teammates, Inspiring him on to victory. Practice as a team, Compete as a team, And win as a team. This is team spirit. Although young and inexperienced, the team held together in the face of adversity and a difficult schedule. Co-captain John Evangelakos suffered an injury early in the season, but remaining co-captain Sean Griffin assumed the responsibilities of leadership and had a good personal record of his own. Fine performances were also turned in by seniors Bruce Elias and Bob Murphy. First year wrestlers Paul Lyons and Aurelio Tissnes, and sophomore Costa Evangelakos and Jed Klein. With most of the team returning, Coach Kryzak is looking for improvement next year.
