We raise funds, recruit people, and organize activities for that time period, and also meet during the year to discuss occurrences about which Black students need to be informed. FAR EAST CLUB The Far East Club is a group of Oriental students who enjoy participating in activities together, while at the same time preserving our ancestral culture. Our major goals are to unify fhg Asian students of Brookline High, to make our presence known, and most important, to have fun. With an active membership of 25, the club fulfills these goals through numerous trips, other activities, and China Night. .After the highly successful production of last year’s show, the Far East Club hopes to produce another China Night, only with different events. It should be a year to remember. PACKARD HOUSE ADVISORY LEAGUE Packard House is the only house at B.H.S. that has an advisory league. Organized a few years ago by Mr. Webb and Mr. Gumbs, the group consists of juniors and seniors who spend the homeroom period in freshman and sophomore homerooms, helping the underclassmen with questions they may have about B.H.S. Through this group, we aim to close the communications gap between upper and lower classmen. Row 1: Nancy Marcus, Mary Page, Paula Simard, Monica Hernandez, Jana Handwerk, Robert Perez. The Brookline High Ecology Club developed out of the environmental awareness movement of the late 60 s and early ’70 s. In the last few years, the Ecology Club has had to deal with a general student apathy towards our environment. However, this year, with many new members and many activi- ties, the club seems to have regene- rated. Senora Gutierrez, Faculty Advisor. The Spanish Club has been revived this year, and the club has been learn- ing more about various cultures of Lat- in America and Spain, and having fun doing so. Club activities have included a visit to Needham High School to see La Tuna, cha-cha-cha lessons, courtesy of Mr. Belliveau, and an excursion to the Spanish Festival in Boston. Mem- bers are in the process of planning International Week activities, in- cluding a fiesta of Spanish food and dance. In the past few years, our club has worked closely with the Brookline Conservation Commission, especially in regard to Earth Day, and the acquisi- tion and upkeep of Hall’s Pond. Other activities include a recycling program, occasional clean-ups, and currently, sponsoring a bill in the state legislature against no-return bottles. The Horseback Riding Club was created three years ago, by its current president, Karen Dana, with the objective of bringing together the many B.H.S. students who share a common interest in horses. The club pro- vides a means for suburban kids to become involved in the art of equestrianship. On alternate weeks, two different groups of ri- ders, beginners and intermediate-advanced, travel to a stable for lessons given at a slight discount. When we aren’t riding, we watch films on horse shows and jumping, and par- ticipate in related activities to learn about riding and caring for horses. 191 SAILING CLUB — A Picking up where it left off last spring, the Sailing Club has continued to grow and flourish. The Club sails at Community Boating on the Charles River in the spring, and participates in the new fall program offered at community. Although sailors’ skills range from beginner to racer, the needs of both are met sufficiently through winter “shore school” classes in basic recreational sailing and in racing. This spring, the club will form a Racing Team, which will compete against other schools as a Varsity Sport. Row 1 : Mike Sapers, Kosta Exarhoulakos, Chris Browne, Steve Rosenthal, Mr. Smith. Row 2: David Initiated two years ago by Mr. C. J. Chalpin, Dan Greenfield, Matt Sperber, Ken Abrahams. Smith and interested students, the Scuba Club provides members of the BHS community with an opportunity to further their Scuba Diving activities. These include: regular club dives to various sites around the coastal region of Massachusetts. Overnight camping during weekends; and X-block pool ses- sions for instruction in underwater pho- tography and practice in underwater hockey. w By 7:30 on most any Saturday, Sunday or holi- day, you will find our club heading north or west in a bus (we can’t go east because the mountains there are un- derwater) for a day of hiking or snow-shoeing. After a long climb you’ll find us sitting quietly at the top of the mountain, eating lunch. Since the fun of the trip is worth it, we don’t mind the bus ride much at all! Members include: Susan Rudman, Debbie Wach, Nancy Goldberg, Susie Lorenzo, Dara Goldman, Diana Gauger, Linda Gauger, Mary Edgerton, Naomi Notman, Nancy Misho, Sean Donovan, Susan Shakin, Amy Goldman, Cheryl Raps, John Dyer, Mark Lebow, Ken Berfield, Matt Sperber, Dan Greenfield, John Peyev, Steve Rosenthal, Mike Sapers, Susan Fredkin, Ed Aifer, Meredith McCregor, Roberta Fineberg. Over the past few years, the Ski Club has not only grown in mem- bership (to 30 members), but also expanded its activities to include four weekend trips and numerous day trips. Despite the size of the club, all active members feel a sense of belonging, and new members are always welcome. 193 SFA t ? f In Front: Mr Dedinsky, David Gold — Corresponding Secretary, Regina Hurlev — Moderator, Louise Short — Recording Secretary. This year, the size of the Executive Committee was cut from thirteen to five, although there are currently six members elected last May. In September, the SFA sponsored Freshman Orientation Day; since the n, they have been working on the problems of censorship, the Student- Faculty Lounge, involvement in the issues of the town election, and the major issues and problems at B.H.S. VOLUNTEERS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE Mr. Gopen, Faculty Advisor Volunteers for Community Serv- ice (V.C.S.) is a student-community service organization. The group has sponsored a variety of movies, including a Hitchcock and Horror series, Casino Royal, and Monty Python’s And Now For Something Completely Different. Admission to these films is, and will re- main, free. Thanks to Jori Cedar and Mr. Ken Bernstein, the Photography Club, known widely as the Photo Fiends, has spent many bright moments in the darkroom this year. The club has taught members how to develop their film, print, and mount their photos. Brookline High has always had talented photographers, and the club strives to develop novices and expose beginners to the mys- teries of the art, so they can enlarge upon their knowledge and focus spare time on fun. Con que construiremos La estructura de una vida, Dia a dfa; paso a paso. Cada experiencia, Cada palabra que decimos, Ariade un ladrillo al cimiento; Y cada piedra caera En su propio lugar, Al ordenarse los momentos vividos. What we have obtained here Is nothing more than a foundation, On which we will build The structure of a life, Day by day; step by step. Each experience. Each word that we speak, Adds a brick to the foundation; .And each stone will fall In its own place.
